How is everyone liking the new virtual measurement? You don’t get to see them spot the ball, you don’t see how they determine where the line to gain is, just a graphic of what the computer thinks happened. Not that the chains were always accurate, but at least it felt somewhat legit allowing for human error. But then it’s all entertainment anyway…
Skoloholics Pick ‘Em League Week One Summary
It’s a brand new season in the Skoloholics Pick ‘Em League, and I don’t think it is any exaggeration to say it is the most exciting thing that has ever happened in my life. It is up there with that time I found a really cool stick while walking.
PA Viking Fan came in at the top. Then again, PA Viking Fan always comes in at the top. We need to gang up on him and take him down a notch. Maybe we can come up with a handicap rule for PA. For example, he must always put 16 confidence points on the Packers to win or something like that.
I came in second. This makes sense. I put in a lot of offseason training and employ a new picking technique: I wear my bifocals, so I can actually read the names of the teams…
Mjolnir comes in third. I think this is Mjolnir’s first time in the league? Or at least the first time using his official handle? If I’m wrong, you’ll have to forgive me. I wear bifocals. What do you expect?
JacksonVike came in at a solid fourth place. I’m pulling for JacksonVike. He is my dark horse this season. I actually asked my wife about putting a second mortgage on the house to bet on JacksonVike winning the league. She said, “Sounds like a sure thing! Do it!” She is very supportive that way.
Surly took the fifth spot. Fifth sound mediocre, but it is really not that bad. It is only five points out of second place. It is a good spot to be, just laying in the weeds to strike in week 2!
Peterplaysbass is in sixth. I think this is Peter’s first season, as well? I expect big things from him. Just the other day, I gave a motivation speech to a bunch of gradeschoolers and told them, “If you work hard, someday you can be in sixth place in the Skoloholics Pick ‘Em League like Peterplaysbass.” They then called me a “Boomer,” which is good, I think. It means I really gave an explosive speech.
Harrison Smith’s Metamucil is in seventh. I’m pretty sure that is Benjamin. He knows he can push my “Harrison Smith is too old” button and get me frothing at the mouth with the rage I feel at seeing Smith return. Oh well. Maybe he will get his 40th interception. That will be a great story to tell his grandkids…when he sees them next week.
Bowbunch came in at eight. We have to cut him some slack, though. He probably made his picks from a tree stand while a grizzly was trying to climb up and get him.
DE Viking came in last with 88 points. I think we can all appreciate him giving us a head start. It is rare and uncommon to find the quality of mercy in people today.
Everyone got the Pittsburg, Lions, Jax and Eagles games right. Everyone got the FREAKING Chargers wrong.
We had two GENIUS picks. Mjolnir was the only one to get the Rams/49ers game right. And Bowbunch was the only one to get the Jets/Titans game right.
We also had two ICONOCLAST picks. Bowbunch was the only one to take the Patriots over the Seahags. Peterplaysbass was the only one to take the Dolphins over the Raiders.
We had no TRAITOR picks this week. Everyone took the Vikings to win. Maybe one could claim DE and I are almost traitors because we took the Vikings to win with only one confidence point. I prefer to think that we successfully resisted our inner Eyores, however. That’s a big psychological step.
One more item: I am pretty sure I picked the Giants over the Cowboys, but then I looked and saw I got the loss because I had the Cowboys picked. I am going to file a complaint with the commissioner that someone hacked my account and changed that pick to sabotage my season.
Me: Commissioner, I would like to file a complaint.

Me: Someone hacked my account, changed a pick and cost me six points.

Unfortunately for you, if the Vikings keep playing Wentz they’ll probably be a decent not great team, like 10 wins and a middle of the draft pick. I don’t disagree with you about drafting one of those two but don’t think its going to be possible

Let’s see. We need to convert the percentages to fractions, reduce the numerator to zero and multiply denominators.
99% (Browns) means 1 in a 100 they lose.
99% (Bears, regular season) means 1 in 10,000 they lose both. (100×100)
96% (Bears, playoffs) means 1 in 250,000 they lose all three. (10k x 25)
90% (Vikings, week 1) means 1 in 2,500,000 they lose all four.

My thoughts about the game:
It was heavily rigged from the begging towards GB. Picked up flag (which may have been the right call, but they only ever do that for GB, not the Vikings), had to challenge the catch but of course GB gets A. Jones called down because he “may” have been touched way before he fell even though the refs didn’t see it and they get “replay assist” to fix it, missed facemasks, etc. Then usually the NFL realizes people are mad about the rigged game so they make a questionable call or two the other way, knowing that the losing team is discouraged and fully expecting them not to mount a comeback when losing badly already, but hey, if they do, it’s a comeback story for more views! That’s their MO and they do it weekly. But the team they wanted to win did not, so expect even more of a bogus game next week!
Also, Flores is not good IMO. He’s way overrated, the Packers were wide open all over and averaging like 9.8 yards per play the 1st half. If not for a lucky strip sack and tipped pick, the Packers likely still would have won IMO.
When they rush 6-8 guys, the secondary gets real exposed. Gonna give up a few big plays, in teturn for scaring the opoosing QB sh×tless

Yes, that was a strip sack and shoulda been 6 for the Saints, and Lions should be 0-1. Im not getting on the rigged bandwagon though. If you think its rigged, there’s really no point in caring or watching.

In the replay, I though Goff started to move his hand forward when he was hit….hence the “forward pass” decision

Game opened as I thought, with a Murray interception. Ugly looking head injury, with that fencing posture I’d guesstimate he’s out until after the bye, and of course will be a setup to get back into the concussion protocol within 15 plays with his running about.
We were looking pretty bad considering GB was without Parsons or Jacobs. Their cobbled together OL looked bad, reminded me of a few OL horror shows the Vikings have fielded. Love was scrambling for his life successfully…until he wasn’t.
I don’t think we got a single offensive holding call.
The QBOTF is not on the roster, I still am jonesing for a top pick in next year’s draft; otherwise, we are in for a good five years of not too hot, not too cold, tepid football. I assumed we would win this rival game at home.
The best coach in the league not currently coaching is our defensive coach. Need to jettison KOC and his predictable play calling, ASAP. We looked significantly outcoached by LaFleur in the first half. I am very encouraged with how Flores had his side of the team prepared for the game. Turner looks great.
I suppose if the QB sneak worked we wouldn’t be celebrating a victory. Game of inches and LaFleur’s seat must be getting warm.
Packers should move on from LeFleur. He’s been there too long.
I am NOT a fan of the HC/OC combo. Again and again that combo seems to miss the forest for the trees. LaFleur had a game plan and would not budge from that game plan…where have I seen that before?

Not sure the QBOTF not being on the roster is that big a deal. Niners built a strong roster and have gone to SB’s with less than a stellar QB. Rams built a roster and went and got Stafford as did the Seahawks with Darnold. Build a strong roster and there’s always a way to get the QB.
KOC was fine calling plays, stuck with the running game and Wentz made timely throws. Defense was good in the second half.
Not good enough, every game must be perfect 37 to 0 victory. Not sure where these lofty expectations were for the teams performance in 2018-2023?

There is a trend under KOC’s tutelage for the team to be trailing at the half. A lot of 3 and out gasps around the two minute warning allowing the opponent to trot down and put up a trey or more. The team looks better in the second half after making adjustments at the half. I don’t know who else you blame that on, maybe the placekicker?

He damn near got to Love many times and I expect that to continue and not all QBs have Love’s escape skills BUT Caleb does and will hurt the Vikes if he does escape. Gotta be disciplined in rush this week for sure.

It will be interesting to see how the QB spot goes this week. There are a lot of people that thought if Murray goes down Wentz would finish the game, but if he is out for a while JJ would start games. I don’t think anyone thought Murray would get injured in the first quarter of the first game.

Wentz for sure next week, I reckon. I expect the Vikes will lose, but if he plays well, he will be starting again week 3.
Kyler looked like a scared child behind that oline. To be fair though, the oline is not great.
Wentz may not have the mobility that Kyler has but he is consistent and isn’t phased by pressure. Adding to that, Wentz was not getting reps with the starters in training camp and hasn’t since regular season last year. I think he will be the starter going forward barring an injury.

Kyler has been behind worse O-line with way less weapons. The Packers DC knew Kyler’s weakness and exploited it. This is where KOC has to play chess and not checkers and should have seen this coming and tried to exploit their over aggressiveness. My big knock on KOC is he is very predictable.
This. Which is why he consistently has the worst 1st-half game plans in the league.
And he was running to run, not running to throw. That was just an accident waiting to happen.
As I have said before, I am not a big Kyler Murrey fan. I think he is an undersized, athletic QB, who struggles playing in a “system”, and our offense is a system. That said, I hate seeing people get hurt, but I do think we are better with Wentz over Murrey. Wentz starts until he proves he cannot do the job. Ideally, JJM can relax, make smart decisions, and the the guy we wanted him to be before the end of the season, but maybe it is more “hope” than reality?
I don’t see how McFragile starts unless Wentz gets hurt.

I think if it were week three or four, JJ would get the next start. Being it is only going to be week two Wentz will get the start. I don’t want to continue starting Wentz, as it would be nice to save him, in case he is needed later in the year. Looking back on last year and how we completely destroyed him.
The reffs saved our ass quite a bit yesterday, but honestly, they did that A LOT for the Packers for about a decade + so, I really don’t feel that bad about it.
Personally think a good chunk of the calls were legit. And the ones that weren’t made up for what they missed – several shots to Wentz’s head, JJ facemask, cut block on Pace…
agreed, there were enough missed calls to make it more fair…
but also, i’m COMPLETELY fine being on this end of it every once in a while. EVERY SINGLE TEAM has had calls benefit them that might not always be right, so I DON’T CARE
There were a couple of Turner shots on Love that I thought were clearly RTP…a couple of facemasks on Jefferson…overall the calls were in our favor but not egregiously so.
I think it just felt more beneficial because most of them happened on that one drive that lead to a score. Other then that, yeah they about evened out.

It’s a stretch to call Wentz accurate. He missed some make throws a pro QB should not, and a fair number of the completions were inaccurate but hauled in via big reach and big effort.
That is fair, but compared to the rest of the QB room, he is ok.
I agree he got bailed out a couple times throwing behind receivers.
Still, I think he is better than Midget or current state JJ. I also think we will end up seeing all 4 QBs at some point this year, so we will have more things to discuss about who the starter should be.
Yeah, I am pretty sure Wentz will get dinged if he has to play too much…but I think he is the most steady QB we have.

I have to say… I HATE those roughing the passer calls. I don’t care if it’s for, against or neutral for the result on the Vikings. I hate that defenses aren’t allowed to play football when near the QB, GIVE THEM FLAGS!!!! That said… how many times have we been on the other side of those and Packer fans basically said fuck off you lost? So it is great for the shoe to be on the other foot haha.
I don’t like them either. It seems like so many are cases of “What is the guy supposed to do?”
I’d like to see an emphasis on don’t grab the head (if a flailing arm grazes the helmet, so be it) and don’t kill their knees.
You can’t hit them high, you can’t hit them low and if you hit them just right after fighting through elite level athletic 300+ pound monsters of OL and you are at an absolute sprint at 10,000 RPMs to get to the QB you are magically supposed to just rev down instantaneously to a full stuff… friggin insane.

Agreed. It’s the worst penalty in the game. It’s so difficult to avoid in some situations.
I think when it’s obvious that a player tried to crunch and hurt the QB, fine. But a normal hit/tackle that happens to put weight on the QB? These guys are huge and are used to (and built) to use their weight to their advantage.
It’s basically “don’t touch the QB”.
I know that’s way over simplified because the QB does get hit.
But in terms of roughing the passer?
Total judgement call week in and week out.

The Panthers defense is really bad. I’m not that worried. Chicago will be good on offense, but Caleb won’t have it that easy every week. I’m glad they’ll have some false hope to begin the season.
I still think it is Chicago’s division because Ben Johnson is the best coach.

Great to get the first win of the season. I was shocked at the end of the game, not sure what had just happened. When’s the last time the refs helped us win a game?
Biggest game-changing play was MLF not taking the points and getting stuffed on 4th and 1. All fell apart from there for the Pack. Like really fell apart.
I don’t like that the refs helped us out big time on that one drive. The calls were ticky tacky. Even though they missed calls on us earlier, and even though the Packers always won that way in the past so “it’s fair,” I still don’t like it. It feels slimy and gross. Is this how Packer fans always feel after a win? Yuck. I’d rather win it by talent, not by NFL help.
It is striking to me that MN was -2.5 on the spread, and that led to us being up 25-22 before the Packers’ offensive line and Love decided to crumble.
Happy for victory Monday. Happy for Wentz. Not sure what this season will hold for us though. I’m still guarded on hope.
If the Pack had lost from 3-10 points you could say those calls really had a major impact in the final outcome but you don’t get to lose by 17 and say the calls on one drive was the game’s deciding factor. I hate those defensive calls too. Let defenses play defense or give QBs flags. Sick of it.
But it was a huge turning point in the momentum. If the Pack stops us on that drive, I don’t have a ton of faith that the game would have gone our way.
I don’t disagree BUT… I don’t care what the situation is. You don’t get to lose by 17 and say the calls on one drive dictated the outcome of the game. You just don’t. Prove it that it had such a huge impact and lose by 3, then you have an argument to be made.
For sure MLF and the Pack OL deserve blame. MLF’s decision to go for it on 4th and 1 was the catalyst for the meltdown, aided by the reffing calls.
