Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

Nothing new on the Vikings front, there have been some recent rumors out there about Harrison Smith coming back and playing after all the offseason workouts and such but nothing at all concrete. There was some big NFL news yesterday though.

The Rams traded for Myles Garrett, giving up a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, a 2029 third-round pick and Jared Verse. Its quite a haul for Cleveland, but Garrett is a generational talent who is already HOF worthy and may end up one of the top 10 pass rushers all time. Verse is a good player and that is a haul of picks, but as usual the Rams just use them to get established players. I think the biggest winner here is Garrett, he gets out of Cleveland and finally has a chance to actually win with the Rams. So long as he doesn’t try to crush the skull of another player he should see deep playoff performances in his future.

The Eagles agreed Monday to trade AJ Brown to the Pats for a first-round draft pick in 2028 and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Drake Maye now has a legit WR. Somewhere Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini are celebrating.

If the Vikings do not make the playoffs this year, do they burn the whole thing down and start over. By this I mean, trade JJetts and anyone worth any value. Fire KOC and the entire coaching staff and start completely over. I would love to see this happen, if we fail to make the playoffs. Maybe even if we make the playoffs and go one and done.

We have a talented roster with a question at QB. KOC is ‘suppose’ to be a QB whisperer. Time for him to start using his magic.

That whole QB whisperer thing is balderdash. Can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. If a QB can’t process, and they’re not accurate, they aren’t going far in the NFL.

What if we go back to the drawing board at QB after this season, should we trade JJetts to a contender team? It would be the right thing to do, rather than waste another 2-3 years of his prime.

Potentially trading Jets is irrelevant to the QB situation.

If the Vikings can get multiple high round picks and a team wants his contract, that trade should be considered.

They are decent enough to be on the edge of the playoffs and think that with a bit more ‘tinkering’ of the roster they could possibly get over the hump.

Couple of thoughts.
Pretty sure most folks would like to see the Vikings have the QBOTF.
But perhaps different than you, some may think we may not even have this on our team right now. And some may think, ala Rams we can go out and get one. There are several ways to skin this cat.
Now as far as winning the SB, believe there are also different ways to accomplish that also. The Niners at least get there with less than stellar QB play while the Bills and Ravens can’t even get there.
There’s a lot to this and I’d also suggest having a great coach is a big plus too.

Would I have taken Williams after 10 games?
Well to qualify my answer, I’m not as good at evaluating QB’s as many around here. Still, to my untrained eye, I saw big time arm talent even early with Williams, so “yes” I would.
Also, virtually every analyst, pundit and coach in the country said he had “generational talent.”

JacksonVike
Reply to  JRobert

Williams was a running back that threw the ball on occasion, his first 10 games. He could not layer his throws and struggled to read defenses. He had a cannon, but usually missed his receivers and most of the time it wasn’t even close.

Sound familiar?

It’s an unpopular opinion on here, as I see many are still hinged to the McFragile™ star and are doubly pumped that Kyler Murray will be waiting in the wings to show the league his Mahomes style chops.

By far the best outcome is for the Vikings to stink this year, develop their defensive players, shitcan KOC week 15, and draft Dante Moore next spring.

By “nobody wants to give him a chance”, do you mean on Skoloholics? That’s just a bunch of fickle fans bickering about the odds they will get bragging rights at the water cooler come Monday morning.

The team has absolutely been professional in their approach to his career, he has and is being given a chance. I could GAF if the team pitches him to the curb or decides the best option is to keep him on the team for the next ten years, but they gave him a chance. No guarantees in life or the NFL.

Look, for me the Vikings have moved into the entertainment bucket. For a while there I was in the “we could win it all” mode. I see no possible way the team will win a SB prior to 2029. Heck making the playoffs the next two seasons would be worthy of a Lake Placid miracle moniker.

He won’t be the starter to start the year that’s for sure.

My guess is he gets the starting gig by an injury to Murray or they just aren’t winning. If Murray leaves for cash in 2027, then I think the premise is McFragile has one last chance to prove it.

My take is based on the fact that they drafted McFragile with a 1st round pick.
So they have to give him his chance again to CYA themselves.

If McFragile misses time with an injury, it’s over. Kaput. Zip. Zero. Nadda.

I think KOCs career as the Vikings head coach is closely tied to whether or not he is truly capable of developing JJ. If JJ does not work out this year, KOC is gone.

When a team uses a top ten pick on a QB, it is expected he plays. If he is not capable at this point to be a productive QB, that is on the coach and said coach will be fired. KOC knows this and will run JJ out there until JJ proves he is not able to win.

Developing McCarthy? There’s an old saying that applies here. “You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear”. To me, watching the replays of McCarthy’s games, I see so much wrong with him. His play execution is so erratic, and balky. He’s more of a chucker of the ball than anything else, and his processing is slow by NFL standards too. There’s just so much to fix there. I think KOC decided there aren’t enough hours in the day to fix JJM and coach the team. He brought Murray in for three reasons. One, he can’t wait to develop JJM, if that’s even possible. Two, Murray was cheap. Three, he has many years of good passing stats and play. The team deserves a chance to win, instead of suffering through more years of McCarthy’s development.

This is what you call voodoo stat math. Career PFF grades, huh? Well how about we just look at the NFL?

PFF ranked McCarthy 29th in the league at the end of the 2025 season. Nowhere close to those other QB’s.

Putting McCarthy on any list with Mahomes, Allen, and Jackson is patently ridiculous. He isn’t remotely in their league. This is akin to putting me on a golf list with Jack Niklaus, because I’m taller than he is. Somebody did a whole lot of cipherin to come up with this.

Nobody has to stretch to find out that over his career, Cousins has been one of the most productive QB’s in the NFL. You have to do more cherry picking to find bad stats, than good ones by a wide margin. He owns franchise records for every team he’s played for, and the biggest comeback in NFL history is up there too, although I consider that more of a team stat.

Tom Brady for one. He didn’t start his first year, and he played pretty well in his second. Mahomes too. Didn’t start his first year, but played pretty well his second. Cousins didn’t become a starter till his 4th year, and he played very well. It’s better to wait and learn, and not be pushed onto the field too early. Coaches are pressured to start these guys and it’s a bad plan poorly executed.

JacksonVike

OK so we would have 2 veteran QBs. The difference between these 2 and JJ is they got to practice their entire 1st year.

I would put JJ at the same level as a 1 1/2 year player not a third year.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  JacksonVike
4 June 2026 4:16 pm

People act like J.J. had no practice his first season, but that’s not true. After he was drafted in April, he practiced and worked with coaches throughout the preseason for four and a half months. Then he tore his meniscus and couldn’t practice, but he still worked with the coaches, studied the offense, and watched film. He got to see Darnold run the scheme, and sit in every meeting and game planning session. This is the meat and potatoes of development. Learning the ins and outs of the offense, and how it works against defenses. His rehab went decently, with a second, non surgical procedure in November for swelling. By May he was moving decently enough to be throwing balls to the receivers. So he’d had a full year to learn the offense completely, and four months to workout with the receivers to sharpen his connections with them. When the season started in September, he’d been in the building for 17 months. He should have really known what he was doing by then, but he looked unprepared, and not very sharp. Most rookies are starting with 5 months to know what they’re doing, and be ready to perform. McCarthy had 17 months, including a total of 8 months on the practice field with his guys.

JacksonVike
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan

That’s why I said he’s had 1 1/2 years of experience. He wasn’t able to spend his rookie season working on the little things, like footwork and touch passes. You don’t learn the little physical things in the classroom.

Wins, are not a QB stat, and he doesn’t touch the ball on every snap. You conveniently omit all those defensive and special team snaps in a game. On average, there around 122 total plays in a game. The QB for the most part, is really only a significant factor on pass plays though. Kyler attempted an average of 32 passes a game in 2025, so he had a significant role in about 26% of all the snaps on average in a game. This is pretty much the case across the league, but people insist on saying that QB’s are the only player to touch the ball on every snap, and “QB wins” are a real stat. In reality, they are a significant impact for their team on only about 26% of the snaps in a game.

Yeah, and a RB picks up a blitz, goes out in the flat and catches a ball, or runs it. Every player does multiple things in a game, and the QB has to have the brains to run the offense, but again, handing the ball off, isn’t the same as drilling the ball 30 yards downfield. As I said, the QB affects the game the most when he throws the ball. That’s about 25 to 30 times a game. There’s a whole lot MORE that happens in a game the QB has no effect on at all. It works out that about 75% of the game, he’s either not on the field at all, or just handing the ball off.

KOC is suppose to be a QB whisperer – he can’t keep falling on we’re poor at QB that’s why we aren ‘t winning.

Good point, Murray was not Teasley’s guy either. So there is no pressure from the GM to put Murray out on the field.

If Murray is the man for the job and beats JJ out for the QB1 spot that’s great. But, if that is the case then the Vikings will have to back the Brinks truck up to Murray’s front door to get him to stay.

Or they let him go after the season and get the we should have kept Murray.

KOC is in Minnesota at least through 2027.
That’s what I mean when I say his career got extended.

KOC will NOT get fired at the end of the 2026 season, unless they go 6-10 or worse.

Shanahan in SF took Trey Lance with the 3rd overall pick – and that was a complete disaster and he’s still gainfully employed in SF.

Hitting on Purdy as Mr Irrelevant likely helped mitigate that as Purdy is the franchise QB in SF – but that’s still a huge swing and a miss with a very valuable pick.

He may not have thought he was going to be the backup, when he signed here. But, we have very little invested in him and there is no reason, other than JJ not being able to perform, for him to be the starter. If JJ even looks remotely close to being able to lead this team, he will be the starter.

Remotely close as the starter is a slap in the face to that locker room.

Remotely close gets JJ a week 1 start, not a guaranteed starting position no matter what. If JJ looks like he did to start the season last year, then yes he is out.

Air conditioning went out this weekend. Could tell the compressor was not turning on with the outdoor unit fan. Did a bit of research and thought it might be the capacitor. Bought a new one for $15 and replaced it in 5 minutes. A/C works now. They supposedly only last for 3-5 years, I think this one was 10+ years old. Regardless, quick and easy fix with YouTube tutorial. Sad thing is a technician would have charged nearly $400 (had an appointment booked and canceled it, but asked about replacement over the phone). Highway robbery.

HVAC is a big money maker. Kids can learn how to do it very quickly. You can get basic training for $500. Of course you’ll need tools and supplies, but you can get started in the business for a very small amount of money.

I guarantee you can, the operative word is will you?

As a first born and almost only child, and because of my own psychosis, I thrive on approval and recognition. When I first met my wife, I think one of the first projects I had was changing out the “works” inside a toilet tank. Received considerable praise and even a chaste kiss on the cheek.

At the Love Shack, my wife did not like the almond switches, outlets, and switch/outlet covers. In fairness, many of them were filthy. When I switched out outlets back in my early days of DIY, working with brittle wires and tight outlet boxes, etc, it could easily take me 20-25 minutes per outlet. With a new (built in 2008) house the wiring is easier to manipulate. My wife wanted them all replaced with white. Now a guy could argue, you could pay an electrician the GDP of Tanzania, or you could say yes dear.

She did give me a cool electric screwdriver which was way easier to use than the old dulled Phillips and flatheads I used to manipulate with one hand while stabbing my other hand or slipping off the nut.

By the end I could switch out a 3 or 4 way switch in 4 minutes and an outlet with two hot and two neutral in 60 seconds. Changed out a grand total of 72 outlets and 41 switches, plus their plates, plus six light fixtures.

I got a “looks good, doesn’t it, good job”.

That’ll work.

I agree that repairs are overly costly, for sure. But that is also an opportunity. When you’re starting out, and building your business, you can undercut those guys by $100 and still make excellent profit on your labor.

The smoke detectors in the house are networked and when one starts beeping, they all start beeping. They also detect carbon monoxide. Recently we had an episode with two of them basically failing and going off and nothing we did could stop them. They are even hard-wired into the house so taking the batteries out didn’t help. I replaced all 8 of them over a day, and all is well now. My wife was pleased to see I could still fix stuff.

The GM has the final say on the 53 man roster according to the Wilfs. That bugs me. The GM brings in 90 players in the offseason via the existing roster, draft picks, and free agents, to compete for that final 53 man roster. These athletes work with the coaching staff every day in meetings, the weight room, and on the practice field. The coaching staff knows which players are the best fits for their schemes. The GM isn’t there every day in every meeting, every practice, etc. How is it he is going to select the final 53? The Wilf’s are being really stupid here.

Oh, sorry JR I thought you were asking me to stir the pot on some topic.

McCarthy showed so little acumen in running an NFL offense efficiently last year it would be hard for me to imagine him going from being one of the worst QB’s in the league, to an MVP this year. He’s still learning how to throw a football properly in his 3rd year in the NFL. I think KOC was very displeased with McCarthy’s play last year. VERY displeased. He went and got Murray at a bargain basement price, because literally ANY QB would be a big improvement over what McCarthy was doing last year.

It told me though that he was clearly not expecting much from McCarthy. He’ll be fair, and he’ll give McCarthy the opportunity, but in the end, he’s not sacrificing ANOTHER season in the name of developing JJM. He’s done with that. JJM can learn and develop on the sidelines. He’ll put a guy on the field who already knows how to play QB in the NFL.

That could simply mean he has the final say in a dispute. Let’s say Flores wants a defensive guy to get the last spot and the OC wants a 6th WR to get that spot. KOC doesn’t care either way or maybe even leans one way but meh, the GM’s job as the head manager is to make the final decision. Even if you run a mostly collaborative organization, somebody has to be in charge. It doesn’t have to be military level controls, but “everybody is equal” triangle of authority shit doesn’t work either.

So what I read was the Wilf’s said the GM has the final say on the 53 man roster. I read that to mean if the HC wants to keep a certain player, and the GM wants to keep a different player, the Head Coach has to acquiesce. To me, that’s like a CEO doing all the hiring, without doing all the interviews or assessments of the applicants.

No, I think the coaches that are responsible to produce on the field, need to pick the guys that they think are best suited to do that, not an exec sitting in an office, reading contracts. And yes, I know this is how the NFL works. I’ve seen Draft Day. I think it’s a bad way to operate. The coach gets fired if he doesn’t win, but he has a guy who’s rarely in the room with the final say on the roster? That math doesn’t add up for me.

So based on your uninformed opinion that is based on reading a news headline the Vikings are doing it wrong? Got it. At the end of the day, somebody has to be in charge. Yeah, the GM might have the last say. The HC may want to keep a player as a 2nd or 3rd stringer that contractually means the team has to cut others. That means the GM needs to say no. Saying that the GM has the final say does not mean that there is not an expectation of work togetherness. That is simply your military experience clouding your view of a simple, innocuous headline.

Per Google – Wednesday is spelled the way it is because it literally means “Woden’s Day”. The name comes from Old English (Wōdnesdæg), which was used by Anglo-Saxon tribes to honor Woden (better known as Odin), the supreme god in Norse and Germanic mythology.

I am untrusting if Iran as well.
Current rumors have the Iranians giving up their nuke program, the US going in with the Atomic Commission and getting the ‘dust’ and then constant oversight and inspections of Iran.
I know that even that is only good enough for as long as we have good administrations keeping Iran honest. Once the Dims get in charge we will have another Obumma deal where we are sending them planeloads of cash.

I dont buy a Goddamn thing that has come from our Government in the last 80 years, any president, any party. Its fine you disagree with me, but I will always stand this war is not good for America, not the average citizen and certainly no soldier. There’s ulterior motives here, where other people, including Trump stand to profit off of it. And you have no further to look than Gaza and Israel to follow the money trail. New Gaza, is all I will say. What was the biggest thing that was keeping New Gaza (that, if built many people stand to profit massively from it, including Trump) Hamas. Who was funding Hamas? Iran. What’s the fastest way to cut funding to Hamas so they go away, and New Gaza real-estate deals, as well as Oil deals and access that are just off the coast can proceed? Cut the funding to Hamas, so war with Iran to kill the leaders that were funding them. Who was actively trying to keep the US and advising Trump to stay out of Iran, very publicly documented? As well as warning us to stay out of the bead with Israel and to cut their influence over the US and its Government? Charlie Kirk. Whose dead now and the investigation into how and why gets shut down to this day by internal parties. Who Didn’t really give a shit that Kirk got shot and brought up a new Ball Room in the same breath? Trump.

Been over JR. We’ve done all we need to do. Destroyed their Navy, their Air Force, their missile sites, their military industrial complex, their nuclear capability, and their economy. The work is done. We’re just holding the line until Iran implodes. There are many other things happening too, that will eventually come to light. Might be a few years though.

Also, don’t forget the Abraham Accords that Trump is working on. These accords align Arab Nations with Israel and against Iran. He’s the only President to ever make real headway in the Middle East peace process, pulling levers no other President ever attempted. He has the entire Middle East by the short hairs, and the media insists Iran is winning. Really? What threat do they pose anymore? Just watch as the Iranian Regime eventually crumbles.

I heard that DJT had made over $1B the 1st year he has been back in office. Lib was happy to point that out until it was pointed out that $1B was less than he (and his buisneses/companies/investments) made the year before he got back into office.

Gas prices, and prices in general (remember the egg crisis?) were falling when Trump was advised that Iran had the components, ability and delivery system to produce a nuclear weapon and use it. There were an number of reasons we went in when we did, that will eventually be revealed. Trump knew the likely result would be higher fuel prices, but he also knows, that will be a temporary effect. I also note, there was zero focus on the cost of anything under Biden, when everything went up dramatically.

Beef prices are largely up because cattle numbers are down. Drought, disease, and slow repopulation have led to herds that were thinner than ever in 2025. This, combined with how tariffs on foreign goods are limiting imported competition, has created ongoing supply-and-demand fueled price hikes on beef.

Trump is reducing tariffs and working to increase supply, which will eventually bring prices down.

This was a piece that was inevitable. Sooner or later some pundit was bound to push this narrative out, backed by some anonymous, but credible source.

JJM has a long way to go in both personal maturity and ability to run an NFL offense IMO. That said, he has to know, all the teams in the NFL have their starting QB situation set or close to set for 2026. If he’s traded, he’s not going to be QB1, and might never be again. Just like RGIII. His agent has to be advising him here. I doubt there’s much more to this story than one person’s view.

Can’t remember what year it was, but nobody will ever have consequences for faking that shit – like you said, partly because nobody will ever call them out on it. If I recall correctly, one of the players themselves or nearby was mic’d up, and also they record EVERYTHING on the field with different equipment, so if there was true racist remarks, they would have undoubtedly come out. Garrett is a POS in my opinion – instead of apologizing he doubled down and made up lies.

It sounds like you’re being facetious, but hitting someone in the head with a hard metal object could be fatal. That being said, I doubt his intent was to kill Rudolph. Regardless, it’s not a football play, and it’s much worse than a shoving, slapping, or even fistfight like you may often see in the NFL. Most definitely not a “football play” and should have come with a season+ suspension IMO.

Nate Burleson reporting on the Myles Garrett trade for CBS this morning and he made an interesting prediction.

He thinks Aaron Donald will come out of retirement to play with Myles.

This doesn’t seem far fetched to me. Donald still works out, hard. Jared Verse (the guy Garett was traded for) spoke on a podcast last year about working out with Donald in the offseason – and the pre-workout routine was enough to leave Verse exhausted.

Both of those dudes on the same defensive line is terrifying.

Not his fault. Squarely on Wryck and Kwesi for paying too much.
I am afraid of that happening with Murray next season.

Kirko is fools gold, nothing more.

I just get wound up when his family/friends/ardent supporters post on here that he is “The most prolific passer in Vikings history” when that stat means nothing. game has changed completely since Sir Francis was running around. Kirko sucks when it matters.

Anyways,
Murray is QB1, until he gets murdered, then we will see if “9” can play better than average.

My guess is Wentz is the one that can take us to at least 1 playoff win, since we know that Brossmer cannot play well.
