Morning all…..beautiful sunny morning here in the SE. 60 with a brisk but not cold air which is perfect. Golfed 18 yesterday morning with my usual 51 / 51 round mixed bag of good shots (4 pars) and bad shots (6 triples) yikes. Although the six triples were probably the worst total in a long while the mistakes on said holes were all correctable pre shot mistakes as I was experimenting a bit. Overall I have a lot more control in shot outcome having found a solid pre shot set up with my irons that has me flushing them which the pars reflected and I really enjoyed the round feeling like I’m beginning to crack the nut on getting my game retuned.
I’m now studying swing weights more thoroughly (D1, C4, D3,) to better understand my driver shaft / irons and swing weight to help get my driver properly balanced for me and what allows me to deliver the club head to a repeatable confident position. It’s an eye opener how even a different grip heavier or whatever changes the entire weight of the club. Interesting stuff. I’m going to buy a premium shaft which will likely cost more than the driver itself for my titleist driver and get the swing weight dialed in to what works for me for shot control and dispersion control. Fun stuff.

We have snow on the ground today. Home course opens Thursday, but I am waiting until the 29th/30th since I would like to not freeze while out there.
Still looking at new clubs, still unsure. Not paying retail for the latest. Any Irons from the last 5 years will be a huge upgrade over my 25 year old set. Maybe Sim2, maybe Callaway rogue, maybe PXG gen 5s.
Happy with my Callaway driver still. And my putter is good. The rest of the bag is going to be upgraded.
Sim2 would be my suggestion of that bunch and they’re probably my fav irons I’ve sold over the past 3 yrs. $799 (they were $999) for a new set currently. I have them in regular flex right now 5-AW as Taylor Made keeps sending their extra sets to me as I sold more than anyone in NC in 2021.
I will have to go hit those again. I did like them 2 years ago when I was first looking to upgrade. Hell of a price, but I need 1″ longer than standard and prefer a midsized grip.
Thoughts on the Stealth irons? I can easily order those and customize…
They feel and perform exactly like the Sim2 irons. I hit 25 with the Sims and 25 with the Stealths and the data was exactly the same so yes the extra $200 is worth the customization you’ll need and have them check your lie angle where you get fitted which the manufacturer will build in at no extra charge. Up charge for midsize grips but only $60 for the entire set verses $120 if a local shop does it. Graphite shafts are an extra $120 also for the set but worth it considering you’ll need to play these in to you senior years.

Also maybe I wasn’t clear but Taylor Made will not customize the Sim2’s. You can only get them in store off the rack. It’s a two year old model only the current year models (Stealths, P790, P770’s etc..) do they offer customization. A shop can add an extra inch under the grips if your lie angle is standard but that would cost $50 the the grips would be another $120 so you’re below the cost of just getting stealths with mid grips and graphite shafts $1150.00. Probability hard to find the Sim2 with graphite all they sent me is steel.

that’s a good point…if you can afford a mid winter week or two at a warm location to get a break that would help. Having prior worked in healthcare for most of my professional career lived in MI and FL so we would see the snowbirds in Fla come from the north and vice versa in MI in the summer and those people were always the happiest I believe because they had different places and seasons to look forward to each year.
Usually it’s a little nicer by now.

I didn’t like the offensive scheme or play calling last year at all, yet the offense did score points and keep us in most of the games. Let me clear, the passing offense did this. Mostly though it was on spectacular throws and spectacular catches. It was simply the experience and chemistry of the QB and the receivers more than anything else.
I hope KOC looks at the offense and understands this is not sustainable. He needs to run some damn slants for the receivers and the tight end needs to work some curl routes. I saw some innovative calls at times, but on 3rd and 1 KOC had nothing, and I mean repeatedly had nothing. He had a lot of talent at his disposal, and came up with a scheme where our receivers were blanketed all the time and Cousins was forced to hold the ball and wait till he had a sliver of a window to throw into.
I hope Flores brings some level of change and improvement to the defense this year. Need a far more aggressive defense that opposing offenses fear. Our opposition LOVED playing against our defense this past year. No fear of them at all.
Kuddos – very insightful take. I’d also go so far as to say every OC in the league would pick us as the team they’d most like to play. Not just because we pay poor defense, but we’ve also got to be least physical defense of anyone in the NFL.

Defense actually stopped NYG in the second half of the 4th quarter.
That was an ugly sequence. But the offense kept us in that game, because our defense seemed hell bent on making the Gnats offense and Daniel Jones look like world beaters. Defense just couldn´t stop that mediocre offense.
In other words, that game was lost by the defense, mostly, IMHO.
If that’s all you see, then you’re just ignoring the reality of things. The team only got to the playoffs because of the passing offense. It was the only good part of the team.

You can absolutely win a championship with Kirk he proved that last year in spades. You do not orchestrate a record breaking season of comebacks and break the all time game record for a comeback and not be clutch. What he did last year with this offense was actually harder than winning a ring in the totality of it all. We can make a long list of marginal QB’s that have won a ring with better teams and defenses supporting them. Its a fact plain as day and anyone saying Cousins can’t win a ring is a fragile emotional fan battling their own opinions against ample proof to the contrary.

I do think the folks here will be happy after 2023 because in my opinion KAM will not extend Cousins. My take on KAM is he’s looking to get the fiscal house in order, and NOT write contracts that favor the player. Team friendly contracts don’t include a lot of guaranteed money or no trade clauses. Thus I think Cousins will be a free agent in 2024, he will get picked up by a team, and the Vikings will be eating a lot of dead cap money. How KAM moves on from there will be up for debate. I don’t think a guy remotely as good as Cousins will be available in the draft or free agency, but the Vikings will need to find someone to play QB for them.

As you said KAM likely cleaning the books up but I’m not so sure they’re done with Kirk because also to your correct point there isn’t anything close to his level of play in FA or the draft. We have a top 5-10 QB in his prime right now and KAM & KOC know this. KOC knows the deal on how hard it is to be a QB in this league he failed at it as he admits regularly. I guarantee he talks at length with KAM about this and KAM is no dummy he’ll listen.
They’re posturing with Kirk for a possible 3-4 extension which I believe is what they want. If they can’t get close to the terms they want with at least some team friendly terms to build a roster they’ll move on. Kirk’s no dummy either he’ll know starting somewhere else is far from a guarantee either unless he can find a way to SF which right now would put them equal to Philly in the NFC if they could land Kirk.

Not sure what you mean about “pressure.” Like moat of the NFL good QB’s he can handle all the throws with little or no pressure. At the other end like most QB’s he doesn’t do well when the pocket is an absolute shit show. Now, there’s the middle ground, when the pocket is breaking down and actually pretty crappy. A lot of guys don’t do well here, but Kirk seems to perform at a high level in these conditions given the way our line blocks. All those plays where everyone says “Oh, those are just on script plays.” Go back and look at the pocket he’s working in. Takes a little more talent to stand there in a crappy pocket, deliver a good accurate pass in a tight window and then get get clobbered. Not so many guys can do that.
Now, I give you, when it’s a shit show pocket, he doesn’t do very well.
this is a very fair statement, and accurate for almost all QBs.
I just feel that for what he is paid, this is a skill he should be a little better at than he is. We cannot all have Mahomes. I just want better QB play or less expensive QB with a better team around him. Either of those works and gives me hope for a Super Bowl.

Your take is probably true: I’m just a bit of an optimist. I picked last years team to win 12 game and everyone thought I was nuts. I was right about the offense, but way off on the defense. You mention money, I believe we paid really good money to put the defense we fielded last year and it was truly an absolute shit show.
We made the Giants, Jets, Patriots look like offensive juggernauts.
Cousins may be overpaid, but he comes a lot closer to meeting his contract than those guys on defense. Yet, all we talk about is Cousins and let those defensive slakkers off the hook far to much.

I understand Mick, but when it takes a best ever effort from a guy who has religiously been in the top of the league in TD production every year, it means the whole rest of the team is not performing. Cousins is the 12th highest paid QB in the league and over the past five seasons has thrown more TD’s than all but three other QB’s in the league.
There is only so much one guy can do, especially behind one of the worst pass blocking lines in the league.

I think the problem with that though is he’s plenty good enough. I mean seriously, how much better do think any QB could be? Just watch game after game after game how he gets smashed and still completes a high percentage of his passes and throws tons of TD’s every year. Tom Brady in his entire career never has been hit like Cousins has. Ever. Imagine if his whole career he had a GOOD O-line?

Strange you would ask that. I live very close to Tampa and have watched every Tampa game the last two years – even gone to a couple. There ain’t no way Tom Brady could stand behind the Vikings line and do that. There’s a reason Tom lasted so long – not taking hits. Tom doesn’t like to get hit and I don’t blame him.
People don’t seem to understand that if you play QB for the Vikings, with our IOL especially, you’re going to get knocked on your can a lot.
And, most QB’s don’t like that and don’t perform all that well in those conditions.
I probably didn’t explain myself that well. I was merely pointing out that Cousins plays pretty well under pressure as he deals with it a lot with our line. But my broader point, even if Cousins played up to every single dollar of his contract, this team ain’t going anywhere
because of our defense. And, I think I read on this site that our defense was like the 12th highest paid right behind behind the 49ers at 11. And yet, we want to talk about Cousins’ money. Those guys on defense should turn in half their paychecks.
And, I agree with “No Longer….”, it might be more productive from a team standpoint to worry just a little less about Cousins playing up and a hell of a lot more about getting the defense guys just getting up to “average.”
