We talked a little about Mark Twain today. One of my favorites quotes from him is:

“Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.”

Ever read Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant?

Grant was dying of throat cancer and struggled to finish the book so his wife/family would have money upon his death.

He finished it 5 days before he died. I always found that story fascinating.

Mark Twain was a close personal friend of U.S. Grant and helped to promote the book.

I have never read the book, but certainly heard of it. I do know Mark Twain enlisted in the Confederate Army for two weeks in 1861 under the pseudonym “Tom Sawyer.”

How did he manage to enlist for ‘two weeks’.

I am sure I was willing to bail on my enlistment at some point during the first two weeks of Basic Training.

I think he actually deserted, and went to Nevada. He joined his brother there who was the secretary of the Nevada Territory or something. I guess working for his brother got him absolved of deserting, but I don’t really know.

All the more reason that A. Lincoln is the best person to be President at the time.

Read a great deal about what he went thru personally including nightmares about blood on his hands.

His wifes family was pro confederate and had members under their arms.

Something we can all agree on, ticks are evil MFers. I put some goop between my dog’s shoulderblades once a month that seems to take care of them (ticks are surprisingly hard to find on a chocolate lab’s fur, wasn’t that way with the vizslas), but at least three times a week after the afternoon walk and brushing I feel one crawling on my leg or neck. Ugh. I had one embedded in my medial thigh that I didn’t find until I was in the bath, had my wife hand me the tweezers for that bastard.

Another common ingredient in snake repellants is naphtalene (moth balls) but even straight moth balls don’t actually stop a snake. I don’t like snakes so have looked into it some and haven’t found anything useful for them.

OK, one more piece of trivia for you guys. Samuel Clemens used several pseudonyms during his long writing career. The first was simply “Josh,” and the second was “Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass.” However, everyone remembers him as “Mark Twain”.

Mark twain is actually a water depth measurement of two fathoms or 12 feet. Riverboats on the Mississippi used to regularly drop lines in the water to measure the depth for safety. Mark twain was the second mark on the line, which indicated a safe depth. Twain literally means two.

I was talking to my wife and she brought up my copy of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” that I have in the living room as a conversation piece. She was reading it for the first time. That brought up the discussion on Mark Twain. The commentary on Catullus just sort of came out of nowhere.

How about a little History trivia?

Catullus an ancient Roman poet, wrote a poem criticizing those who considered his poems too racy. The poem began and ended with a line that translates to “I will sodomize you, and face fu*k you”.   Pretty mild… not too racy at all.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s the topic… It’s more a particular person (or sometimes people) that feels the need to consistently make negative or inflammatory comments on something or attack people for their opinions, and then they don’t like it when they get called out on it. Any topic this can happen, really. I refrained from making any comments or offering any advice about the whole “I wanna date this person but she’s taken” thing the other day because I didn’t have any relevant or helpful advice to offer. But some people have to stick their noses into something that doesn’t apply to them and/or make derogatory comments no matter the subject.

Its on a public forum. You dont have to like my comments but you are free to comment back how ever you want, just be ready for a reply back. Just like I was ready for someone to throw a hissy fit being called a child for eating cereal. A thing literally designed and marketed to kids. If you wanted to make some hurtful remark on me talking openly about something personal in my life, go for it, but be prepared for the back lash. You are comparing apples to fuckin pizza my guy all because you dont like how I type on a keyboard. If you want to make things personal so be it, but you wont like it.

That’s the issue – I’m not going to try to make hurtful comments or go out of my way to be an a** unless or until you continue to do it to myself or others. Then it’s hard for me to sit by and take it because you don’t need to be that way and I’m not afraid to speak up about it. Be better.

That being said, some people offend others by accident or don’t consistently try to be jerks (and that’s okay – it happens in a generally cordial environment). You seem to excel at it and go out of your way to try to start stuff.

As Willy Wonka would say, “Good day!”.

Powder is limited because it’s all getting contracted to the government (probably going to Ukraine). Brass is still pretty limited.

I don’t know if it will. This started during covid and the companies have just never really caught up. On top of that, some major manufacturers have went out of business because of government over regulation. With the threat of wars, international and the perceived threat of domestic, I think ammo and supplies will continue to be gobbled up by people who don’t really need it and the government will be getting all they can stockpiled. For primers, the ammo companies realized they are better off to keep them and use em for factory loads instead of selling them and they aren’t caught up on factory loads. Shoot, I haven’t seen a box of the goose rounds I like since pre-covid. A couple companies seem to be getting better on supply like Hornady, but it is still limited.

Good morning Skolschizos!

Nothing in life is as constant as change…..

I’ve taken a job with the University of Nebraska. It’s a supervisory role (I’ll have 2 full-time employees and a slew of student employees working underneath me) with the Parking & Transit office (it’s a glamorous life) I start next Monday.

It’s been almost 3 years since I’ve had a ‘brick & mortar’ job – last working in enrollment processing at Nelnet (which I hated – thankfully I got laid off during the pandemic loan freeze and it was a blessing) I’ll have an office and a parking space and all the prestige that comes with being a mid-tier supervisor.

It’s an 8-5 gig (not near the freedom I have now) so that’ll be an adjustment – not the hours, but staying in one place for 8/9 hours at one time. I’m used to moving around, usually with Goose at my side.

The benefits and retirement compensation are fantastic.

So I’ll likely be around here less and less for the next few weeks, especially during the day. Need to at least give the impression that I’m working hard before saying ‘f*** all’ and logging into Skoloholics for the entirety of my working day.

Skol!

I was worried about how accurate/valid the test was so at week 4 I took a few Percocet (had a tooth pulled) and it showed up on the opioid strip of the test – so I knew it was good.

The first time I smoked after I got that job I was in outer space – and it was easier to quit than I thought it would be, so every few months now I’ll give myself a break stop for 3/4 days, sometimes a week. Helps to reset my tolerance level.

Congrats on the new job mate. In one of my former jobs we were tested on a regular basis, good thing we always got the invitation for the test well in advance, like 8 to 10 weeks prior to testing.

Enough time to clean out the system, those test strips work really well and seem pretty accurate, never got busted while I worked there. Took about 4 to 6 weeks usually to get “clean” for me. New job doesn’t require drug testing, which is a blessing.

In the guards, we would get a “random” drug test, every 6 months. I just so happened to be randomly picked every time.

Great when one gets “randomly” picked every time, doh. It’s unfortunate that weed, which I don’t consider to be a “drug” at all, can be detected weeks after consumption, while traces of real drugs seem to be cleaned out of the system pretty quickly.

Similar situation with me. The Air Force would pick a digit and one of the characters of your social security number to determine who got tested each month. Like if the second character of your SSAN was “4” you got tested. The next month, a different character and number was selected. I was once tested 5 months in a row. The folks doing the testing laughed and said “you have the unluckiest SSAN in the history of the Air Force”.

For Edge and crow eating.
Since the last election I have waxed on about Fetterman and his being unfit for office, and even thrown shit at PA voters.
Last night was listening to him on an evening news show. He was articulate, sthioughtful and well reasoned. His positions on Israel, campus disruptions, the border and immigration were as solid as I have heard from anyone.
So, I eat crow but still able to see good regardless of where it comes from – either party.

The people that tell you thats good for you are the ones that sell you the shit you are eating. Secondly, my metabolism is fine, it doesnt need jump starting, mostly because I fast (not eating) from 7pmish at night until around noon the next day. Now THAT is actually good for you and has been tested quite a bit. If you would like some documentation and or videos I will gladly link you. Its not though, that “medical reserach” is funded and backed by the people that make and or sell breakfast foods. Same way the sugar industry backed false studies saying “fat ” is bad for your diet, and that you should eat more grains. If you want to go off 50 year old corporate funded studies, fine. Do you. I will do whats best for me. And eating a bowl full of sugar in the AM is not good, for anyone.

Don’t misstate me.
I said agreeing with you everyone is different and they need to find what’s best for them personally.
And I said ‘most’ which is not ‘all.”
And I do believe in fat is good. Also most all things in moderation.
I have no idea what 50 year old studies say. do know this, there are many people that have blood sugar problems (not severe) and going lo ng periods of time is not real good. again, it’s an personal thing. People that are very active, like construction workers, will also not do real well with long fasting periods. Nor athletes.
Now, I like breakfast. Hard boiled eggs, wheat toast, cup of fruit, yogart. guess you wouldn’t go for fruit with all it’s sugar but it’s natural and I’m OK with it.
Now, I don’t eat much cereal, but don’t think something like shredded wheat (unsweatened) or bran flakes are going to hurt you at all.

I just don’t think your comment of “I dont eat breakfast and im also not a child so I dont eat it” is not in any way helpful or contributes to the conversation about cereals at all, so it is unnecessary and also can be viewed as inflammatory calling people children, so I was calling you out on it. Again, some of your “goodwill” that you always seem to claim.

Also, if you check my comment, I said “eating something in the morning, I believe, is a good thing for your body”. As Jrob says, I think medical research says eating something, even small, is good. But fasting can be good as well in some ways.

You can claim you were joking, but when you constantly make inflammatory comments and attack people, you don’t get the benefit of the doubt.

KFEY93
Reply to  JRo_42

I dont claim good will. And its not a joke, I firmly believe grown ass adults eating cereal is broadline childish and you would be better off not eating it at all. And actual fitness and dietitians back up that belief. (This is a really stupid argument by the way). I dont care if you eat breakfast or not, like I said, whats good for some, is not as good for others. But universally breakfast cereals have no dietary value and are a net negative to someone’s over all health. If you get that offended because I called you a child for eating children’s food, you need your blood pressure checked. None of this has anything to do with being “manly”. So that whole tirade was cute.

Oh I know you’re not poking. I might answer that question though this way… Cousins played for the Washington Redskins and threw for over 4,000 yards, 25 or more TD’s, and a passer rating of at least 93.9 every year as a starter. I would say the Jets were no worse than the Redskins.

Maybe not quite as good then. Cousins threw for like 2350 and 18 TD’s in slightly less than 8 games – annualized 4700 and 36. Seems even if Darnold is lesser, he could hit 4000 and 30. Doesn’t seem to far fetched.

Darnold is not slightly lesser than Cousins JR. I’m looking at 3,500 yards or thereabouts, and around 20 TD’s out of Darnold. That’s based on his history as a starter. I HOPE he achieves 4,000 yards and 30 TD’s, but that would be wildly out of the norm for him.

Gonna be hard to achieve all that form the bench. JJ will have over 4000 though.

That would be awesome. We could go the route of the Packers and let our rookie sit and learn. It seems to work for them.

Does Lethal Weapon 2 kind of suck? I kind of think so…

That is one element of the Lethal Weapon banter that genuinely worked.

Lethal Weapon 2 ruined Joe Pesci for me. I have tried to watch Raging Bull, but I cannot see Pesci as a tough guy. Home Alone solidified the fact that Pesci is not a tough mob guy.

Try Goodfellas and Casino – he’s solid in those.

He’s also in a terrible (in a good way) buddy comedy with Danny Glover called ‘Gone Fishing’ – it’s trash, but in the best kind of way.

Goodfellas especially, excellent movie. Ray Liotta was very good too in that one, and Pesci nailed the psychotic though guy IMHO.

To answer the question, it’s likely that we’ll hit an away game.

Now that we don’t go to Murderapolis anymore, away games are all we have.

Speaking of the mythical music up top, I can remember when the video was the most requested video on MTV (Dial MTV-they would play the most requested video each day), it was number 1 for 14 weeks according to the interwebs. MTV had to change the rules to get it off.
