Minnesota Vikings Discussion: Skoloholics 10/26/2026 – Daily Thread Victory Monday Edition

Vikings-Colts 3

Happy Monday, and welcome to Skoloholics. The Vikings were able to tame the Colts yesterday, in a 16-10 victory. It may not be pretty but a win is a win. At some point our offense is going to have to start firing on all 8 cylinders. We saw flashes of what this offense can do, but that is it, flashes. We have too much talent on the offense to be this lethargic.

Hitman got his 40th interception, putting him in the 40/20 club, joining Ronde Barber and Charles Woodson as the only three players to reach this goal. The latter are both in the NFL Hall of Fame.

Aaron Jones Sr left the game with a knee injury, but was able to come back in, with a brace on. I would like to see him take a little time off to prevent the knee getting worse. And, to be prepared for later in the season. The coaching and medical staff needs to step in and save him from himself.

There were a few surprises yesterday; the Panthers got destroyed by the Bucs, Atlanta beat the 9ers, Seattle beat the Chiefs. The last two, make the Vikings the last undefeated team in the league.

The Vikings will be heading into the toughest stretch of the season, and we will get to see what we are really made of. Up next is the Detroit Lions in Motown. Following that is a Monday Night matchup against the Buffalo Bills at home. Adrian Peterson will be inducted into the Vikings Ring of Honor on the Monday Night game.

35 years ago tonight Kirby Puckett hit a walk off home run off Charlie Liebrandt to win game 6 of the 1991 World Series.

The next night Jack Morris pitched 10 innings of shutout baseball, and the Twins won the series, their 2nd in 5 years.

Still my greatest memory as a minnesota sports fan.

I was in Stuttgart Germany and the games started like 2am.
Of course I got up for it.
Game 7 ran long and so I was late for PT, the 1SG asked me why and so I told him.
He ranted about how ‘missing formation had consequences’, I said ‘I will accept them’.
I never heard another word about it.

I’m also sick of KOC winning the Toss and choosing to start on offense. IT NEVER WORKS and often we 3 and out and give it right back to the opponents.
I understand he wants to start hot and jump out early, but he ALWAYS used to defer, idk what’s changed but let’s stop starting on offense and lets let the defense start hot for us

This team in my honest opinion feels eerily similar to the 2003 minnesota vikings. Both this year and 2003 the bye week was week 6. In 2003, we proceeded to go 3-7 down the stretch and we had the 23rd best offense in terms of scoring.

If the offense doesn’t shape up, I could see a similar scenario. The defense is not going to be this stout the entire year. The remaining qb’s are going to throw quick to avoid pressure. They’re going to probably score in the 20’s. Long sustained drives. If our offense doesn’t wake up, these games will not be close.

I would not hate it if we traded for Tony Pollard.

good pass catcher, looked good in a bad Titans offense.

and he should be more affordable than Taylor or Barkley – both will cost too much in draft capital.

I’d rather we just kick the tires on Cam Akers again…..

No to Cam Akers ( hope that was a joke). But Pollard on the cheap, plus adding a guard would be okay with me. It doesnt need to be a monster star at RB. We need health and starting caliber, thats it.

Pollard only has 40 yards more than Jones. I’d rather take a RB who can produce much more than an aging cripple.

Taylor has 150 more than Jones. I thought it would be more than that, but it’s only 25 more per game.

Jones has been doing pretty darn well.

Tampa’s Irving has about 120 more than Jones, and their season is pretty much over.

Jones has played well – but he’s got zero burst at this point.

Pollard a bit younger – more explosive than Jones at this point while being a good pass catcher.

Figuring Mason as our starter going forward, I think Pollard would provide a healthier change of pace while giving Jones time to heal, maybe get his legs back a bit.

And Pollard would be cheaper than JT or Barkley – fear both the Colts and Eagles would want too much.

Irving would be interesting to me – but I don’t think the Bucs believe their season is over yet. Thats a rough division and 8-9 might be enough to take it. Irving also comes with a bit of an injury history – he’s younger, but I also think he might be too expensive.

I didn’t get to see much of this game, but McCarthy looks a lot like RGIII to me in how he plays. He tends to throw the ball to the player physically closest to him on the field, or the player farthest away from him. He throws it in front of the defense or over it. It won’t take long for defenses to pick up on this IMO. Harbaugh did this with Lamar in Baltimore early on too BTW.

Until he had to shoulder the offense in high pressure situations where we didnt have a run game. Its very clear he needs a great run game for play action to work, otherwise he folds. Look at Seattle this year when they didn’t have a run game. Their run game and defense won that SB last year. Did he have good passing stats against the Rams? Yes. Did they have a good run game, also yes. Last year and so far this year he is tops in the league in turn overs. Darnold is not the ex we should be crying over.

With the news of Jone’s knee being powder again (probably), the Vikes will more then likely be kicking the tires on trading for an RB, who and how much will remain to be seen. I would still like a guard, and or a safety/ DT as well but. Beggars cant be choosers. Murray regressed from the previous two games but KOC’s play calling was also bizarre at several points. Its a combination of things. Bizarre play calls at times, combined with good play calls that work (wr’s open) but Murry not moving around in the pocket to see them and or, over throwing the route. I have zero qualms with the defense but they will get gassed out and bled eventually if we cant control the rock and at least score. Im still curious on getting Wentz in there in some of these upcoming games if the offense isn’t working.

Anybody else feel like the Lions are a darling again this year? The NFL has gifted them at least 2 games already (the NO game with the backwards pass/fumble that was ruled incomplete against all logic and never before) and the Packers game yesterday (several bad roughing calls, an interception that was called back from St. Brown just plowing into Cisse and the defense getting called for PI somehow, and there were several more bad calls that favored the Lions). They have been getting some very favorable and fake calls in their favor the past 5 years or so since they’ve become good and it just seems like the NFL wants them to succeed this year again. I am guessing they likely win the division (the NFL loves good offense, after all).

Worst part is I have a Lions friend fan who continues to claim that those calls were “just the game” and didn’t favor them heavily. It’ll happen against the Vikings next week again, mark my words. And of course, he’ll never admit it…

i LOVE koc, but this was yet another game that we had an extensive amount of time to be ready and the offense came out gross.

yes kyler kind of sucks. but 4 straight runs to start the game and then turnover on downs? that’s not on kyler. that’s on KOC.

there were plenty of head scratching offensive play calls that leave this KOC bobo scratching his head….do i love him or do i hate him, i can’t figure it out.

watching the seahawks game last night, they annoucers talked about how Mcdonald has started calling quicker plays for sam darnold so he doesn’t keep getting sacked. so is there not a way to do this for us as well, KOC?
Other teams get their best WR’s the ball ALL THE TIME (looking at you JSN, looking at you Puka etc) how then does the “best wr in the game” only get 4-7 looks a game? he should have 12-15 targets EVERY SINGLE GAME.

I think it’s as simple as the number of times the ball is actually thrown at him.

If they counted the plays that would have gone to him had he been open or Murray not pressured, they’d have to sit down with KOC every game and ask who was the primary target on THIS play…..how about THIS play……and how about THIS play…..

I went to the gophers game this weekend, it was a slog but I’d never seen the gophers beat Iowa live so there was that, couple guys that could be drafted by Vikings that stood out to me

C/G Greg Johnson – likely early 2nd round pick, can play all over the interior and has played tackle, Brandel is meh, fries is meh and expensive

DE Anthony Smith- had a huge season last year, I think led big ten in sacks but has been quiet this year probably day two pick, he’s a rather large traditional DE at like 285 and can play inside too, seems like a guy Flores could use in different ways

CB – John Nestor transferred from Iowa last and started ever since, leads the team in picks over that time, likely day three pick, Rodgers is a free agent at the end of the year so they’ll need some more depth, he’s white though so I’m sure he’ll get moved to safety

It’s interesting in what’s happening with fans right now. Like… I get the worry with offense, I do. BUT, imagine it was the other way around and we can all remember times it was the other way around. Where the Vikings had some great stats, were getting a lot of yards, but losing games. I feel these same fans would be going, “there’s no moral victories in the NFL. Stats don’t mean shit if you aren’t winning!” Which is true… and here we are winning but without the offensive stats.

I get both sides, but I’m certainly wary of the 6-0 record. I know people love to mention the old Ravens defense and such, so it’s possible, but it’s far less probable without even an average looking offense.

I’m guarding myself from too much hope considering the past.

Funny how it never coincides.

The 1998 offense had a bad but opportunistic defense.

Maybe the Vikings just need to get a true #1 WR, trade for a top TE, draft a #2 WR in the first round, bring in 2 good running backs and then they will be able to do something on offense. If they want to get really crazy, they could bring in a WR3 that has been one of the better players in the league over the last few years…

As a fan I am unhappy because the team has hitched the team wagon to a proven lower tier but athletic QB that is not able to run the offense KOC demands. I think the team should have kept JJ around another year vs bringing in Kyler.
The offense is shit. Plain and simple. Not working.

Defense is fun to watch, but unless they get much better on the other side of the ball, this will not end well. Maybe they become like the Ravens in early 2000s and just win 12-9 or 16-10 even vs good teams. I do not think this is sustainable.

This season to me is just exactly like the Case Keenum season. I just kept waiting for the trainwreck. I feel the same way now. No faith in the qb

Correct. On the same note, his playcalling and his ability (or willingness) to adjust his offense to the QB he chose leaves something to be desired as well.

4 runs and a turnover on downs after a good return in favorable field position on the first drive of the game? Sheesh…

This is not anyway like 2017, that offense was 12th in scoring, so slightly above average. This offense is in 30s.

With the weapons on offense, there is no reason for them to average less than 25 points a game but they can barely even score a TD. A high school coach could come up with ways for this offense to be productive. KOC is a good head coach, horrible OC.

Jennings (again) was wide open – it was right after Jones got his knee bent the wrong way.

I had to look it up, Kyler is 36th in the league in average passing yards per game with an average of 162.4 yards per game. Bo Nix is over 180 yards per game and he went a whole game last week without throwing the ball more than 2 yards.

I think he closes his eyes when he throws the ball, his midgetness makes him have to throw the ball in a strange way to get it over the line and then it’s all hope….. if he isn’t running/moving and getting out of the pocket, he’s just NOT GOOD!!!

I’m full of conflict because of the offense, but we are winning, so that is good. How many other years have we not gone 6-0?

Myles Price with a great kickoff return – first thing in the game, and the offense goes 4 and out and turns it over on downs despite being within FG range (56 yard attempt), and then the Colts move the chains and score on a 38 yard run up the middle.

So special teams can strike any time, which is great, but the Vikings defense seems to warm up over the course of the game, and the offense sputters throughout, although there always seem to be a few drives with multiple 1st downs that allow for FGs.

The problem is weathering the storm, and while they’ve managed to do it against some notably inferior teams (with a fair bit of luck mixed in), they really need some consistent, reliable offense to stand a decent chance against good teams.

Agreed, but it does not change the fact that this team has been clamoring for a long term solution, and let one walk away for a 5th rounder.

Maybe JJ never becomes a viable NFL starting QB. But we know Kyler is paid 50 million to leave AZ because after 7+ seasons they had seen enough.

10 starts is not enough.

All of that is true. But from most readings the problem was KOC and JJ did not get along and JJ would not do things KOC told him to do. Maybe a personality conflict, don’t really know, but in most jobs in life if you don’t do what the boss tells you to do, you’re asking for big problems.
Still, JJ maybe turn out to be a fine NFL QB.
And the selection of Kyler to run KOC’s pocket QB offense is very puzzling.

Maybe JJ didn’t want to do certain things because he realized KOC is not the offensive genius he’s drummed up to be. KOC should stick to the head coach role which i think he’s very good at and let somebody else run the offense. It can’t get much worse.

Sure, but not as big a deal. The average DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average) of our previous six opponents is -12.9%, and the avg DVOA of the next six opponents is 13.2%. That’s like going 6-0 against the 25th ranked team in the league (IND) and then having to play the 8th best team in the league (BAL) for six games. (data is through week 6)

Granted, the same metric ranks the Vikings 6th (18.6%), but seeing how we’ve squeaked past the previous opponents, I’m not confident we’re going to start suddenly playing better.

Anything’s possible, though.

I feel like 3-3 is the reasonable (barely) ceiling over the next 6

at Detroit shouldn’t be easy
Hosting Buffalo, not easy
at FTP, never a gimme
at SanFran? Almost a guaranteed loss
but the hosting the Falcons and Carolina both feel winnable, although The Falcons just beat the 49ers and Carolina is sneaky good

I see 4 straight losses, then 1 or 2 wins hosting ATL/CAR

7-5 feels a little more likely than 8-4 to me. 9-3 would be a surprise, but not crazy.

Victory Monday, and doubly nice ‘cuz FTP lost.

Lotta people on the. “We should have kept JJM” bandwagon. I am too. Two main reasons.

1. 10 games is not enough to evaluate a young player
2. Trading him for a 5th, was almost like cutting him.

But it was a decision, and harping on it will NOT change anything.

I am just looking forward, one week at a time. Beating Detroit would be huge, as it gives a solid footing in most tie-breakers, if it comes to that. We have had 4 turnovets in 6 games, that has been the key. Gotta keep it up

Teddy

I am so very tired of this team completely messing up the QB position.

I wonder if it was a locker room thing, where JJ was not playing nice with Kyler?

Whatever happens this season, the defense is a lot of fun to watch.

When the Vikings decide to sign Kyler to a long term deal, I will do something else vs watching football. I bailed after 2010 until Zim/Teddy, and I am already feeling the same about this team even though they are undefeated. No faith in Murray or KOC.

best coach this team has had since Bud.

With no playoff success, it is hard for me to get on board with that sentiment.

As a “QB Whisperer” his track record is not good. As an Offense minded head coach, the lack of production on that side of the ball is very discerning.

The simple fact that the team is unable to score TDs at a higher rate against below average teams is telling. He is either unwilling to change his scheme to match the talent, or the talent is just not there.

Right now he is no better than Zim or Denny, imo.
Without B-Flo, this team would be in complete rebuild mode.

KOC is a hell of a coach…I feel he has done the best he can in his years here with a flawed roster. I get the whole “lack of playoff wins” thing, and I get today’s “if you are not winning you are losing mentality”, but he is indeed the best coach we have had since Bud Grant.

They’ve been wins, but the 5 wins last year were against the 5-12 Commies, the 7-9 Cowgirls, the 4-13 Gnats, the 9-8 Loins, and the 9-7-1 FTPs.

Our 6 wins this season were against the 4-3 FTPs, the 5-2 Bores, the 2-5 Bucs, the 1-5 Fish, the 2-5 Aints, the 2-5 Colts.

Those 11 wins are more like participation ribbons. Had they all been against playoff caliber teams you’d have a better point.
