The work week is nearing its end. When you work for yourself, you don’t notice the weekdays and weekends as much. other than kidddo being at home instead of at school. You do work when it needs to be done, regardless of day or time, I love having the flexibility.

Here’s great news that I was NOT expecting to hear. Vikings.com reports that the Vikings signed defensive coordinator Brian Flores to a contract extension. Getting him here for even one more year is something to be thankful for.
Brandon Aiyuk has apparently played his last down for the 49ers, according to GM John Lynch, story from NFL.com.
From CBS Sports, Keon Coleman will also be playing for a new team next year, and the Bills will part ways soon.
Josh Allen may need to have surgery on his foot this off-season, according to Reuters.
CBS Sports speculates on who the Bills may hire to fill their head coaching vacancy.

Ex Viking Assistant HC Mike Pettine couldn’t work with Coach Flo?
Don’t know much about Pettine but evidently he has a Defensive background but said he had to concentrate on working on the Offensive side of the team because he and BFlo ‘didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of things’.
Glad we ended up keeping Coach Flo, not upset at all about losing Pettine.

I have no real news – good or bad – regarding Madison. She’s still comatose and has been fighting various infections. They’ve increased antibiotics and attempted to do a spinal tap but were unable as her heart rate spiked when they tried to turn her over. She’s got a trach in and she’s been responding physically to the sound of Sam’s voice. They had backed her off sedation quite a bit and now it sounds like that’s changed. I keep getting conflicting reports and it’s changing almost daily. I don’t know what any of this means and have no news to report regarding prognosis or recovery. Still too much uncertainty. When I know more, you’ll know more.
Community support has been overwhelming. Large contingent of Madison’s friends and teachers have come thru – bringing flowers, teddy bears and decorating her room and the halls with her artwork. Folks got together and took care of 3 months worth of Sam’s mortgage, vehicle and utilities payments. Meal trains are in place. People feeding the dogs, minding the house.
Man hasn’t left the hospital grounds – save for 40 minutes when I basically had to drag him to my truck in the parking garage. I lit a pre-roll and gave it to him and he basically inhaled it, let out a dragon’s breath of smoke and broke down. Sobbing, screaming, crying, punching my dash and just letting go. All I could do was grab him, hug him and cry with. What else can you do? He collected himself, thanked me for the break and we walked back in – and by Madison’s side is where he remains. My sister brings him clothes, he’s able to shower and freshen up and there’s a constant string of visitors to keep him company – but he hasn’t left the grounds since the day after Christmas.
Heartland is frozen and covered white – but I seen worse. Grabbed the mutt and headed west last night.
Never thought I’d see the day when the Hoosiers ruled the gridiron and the Huskers would dominate the hardwood.
I included one of the pieces of artwork that Madison created. It’s…. odd, but still pretty cool.

Thank you for the update. Such a tough situation for all. Really happy so many folks are pitching in to help. I know we keep her in our prayers every day.
Closest thing I experienced to what you describe is when my Brother passed quickly leaving a Wife and 5 kids. We managed to hold the family together long enough for them to heal until only scars are left, deep scars but just scars.
Dealing with the child’s medical issues sounds so much worse. I pray for all of you and for Madisons full recovery. It won’t be soon but eventually you all will be left with only scars and not open wounds.
Can’t find the right words to even say. But do hope and pray the situation will get brighter in the near future.
Sam is one hell of a Dad. God keep him strong for Madison.

The Ravens hired Jesse Minter to be their new head coach after they let John Harbaugh go. Minter worked with Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, and has been his defensive coordinator the last two years with the Chargers. Odd that he is now going replace his brother in Baltimore.
Any word on the Pittsburgh hire? That is the most interesting opening left I believe.

Not too much. Lots of folks think Mike McCarthy is in the running, but they interviewed Anthony Weaver, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator yesterday.
Weaver just completed his second season as the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins after being hired in 2024.
Weaver has 21 years of experience in the NFL, including 14 as a coach and seven as a player.
McDermott seems like he would fit very well there.

Sometimes things stagnate and a change is needed. In the Army everyone changed every few years no matter how well things were working. It was just the ‘nature of the beast’ there.

My wife had to leave early this morning to go to school because the kids have a robotics competition. We do not have a heated garage. She said when she started the car in the garage, the temp read 11 degrees. By time she got 1.5 miles down to the end of our road, the temp read -25. What a nice balmy day for a drive. It has warmed up to -16 now. Happy Saturday.

I tip my cap to their fortitude but shake my head at their intellect.
They didn’t have school yesterday, but still kept the plan on to do the competition. These kids don’t have that many competitions and trying to reschedule them is not easy. I’m sure at least a few of the students showed up without heavy winter coats, but that is because some parents are not good at parenting and to be honest, kids are just dumb. They will be in a nice warm school all day, but when this gets done sometime this afternoon, it is still supposed to be -4. My wife will hang around the school until she is sure all of the kids have been picked up.
I have a great friend who’s son did robotic contests in junior high and high school. He went to MIT, and works for NASA I think now.

This is the part of the golf swing I have never really fully implemented, and likely the reason I’ve been a comparatively short hitter all my life. I have hit the ball decently, and decently straight, but never with a lot of “authority”.

So I went to the grocery store with The Teacher.
Saw a young kid in an Addison Jersey, said ‘nice jersey’. His older sister said ‘he’s a Viking Fan’, I replied ‘of course he is’. Then the dad stepped over and said ‘are you Viking Fan?’ I replied ‘yep’. He looked like a Mormon, young, fit, clean cut, wholesome with his kids, then he started to rant.
First he explained that the son was named after Adam Theilen and how right after he was born AT moved on to Carolina, how they considered changing his name. Decided not to, AT came back and the family was happy, then AT left for Pittsburgh.
I said ‘Well Addison is going to be traded the boy seems to have bad luck’. Dad then says “He will be traded, and JJ and BFlo is staying and we are going after Burrows and going ‘all in’ next year’ I said ‘we don’t have the salary cap for Burrows’, he said ‘we will make it work out!!” He was quite worked up.

Coaching staff quality is something fans sort of take for granted. Having a really good group of coaches is a fundamental baseline need if you’re going to be a competitive team though.
We could see if Mike Tice wants to come out of retirement.
I would think Cleveland would have a better chance of filling their HC vacancy than the Bills, after the Bills front office didn’t just throw their coach under the bus. They backed up and ran over him a couple more times.
It was a strange decision. 9 years of coaching , 8 years making the playoffs.
From what I read, McDermott did not want the receiver they drafted last year and Beane drafted him anyway and now is blaming the coaching staff for not coaching him up.

Maybe worse, maybe better, he’s a DC, harbaugh was ST coordinator, I do wonder though why more HCs don’t come from the ST background, Belichick had cut his teeth as a ST coach for most of his assistant career, harbaugh same thing, I don’t really recall anyone else, other than the raiders last HC who took them to the playoffs after gruden was fired, interim coach Bischoff or something like that, but of course they hosted someone else who sucked.
I believe Andy Reid was ST at one point.

For those of you who struggle with your putting, I watched this Bobby Jones video about 3 years ago, and decided to copy his putting grip. That change really improved my consistency in getting the ball started on line, and I made more putts. I still use this grip, because frankly, it works.
I can attest unequivocally that I do not ‘struggle with my putting’.

My normal interlaced grip. I use that grip on every shot but putting.

Most people do, and I certainly did. When I changed my putting grip to mimic Jones though, it really worked. That’s all I can tell you.
Interesting you bring up putting grips.
I was just watching yesterday a video of Player, Trevino and Nicklaus talking about putting and what each thought was important to success. Pretty neat as they all do it so differently – stance, stroke, head placement – yet between them they have won like 35 majors.
When they say different strokes for different folks, it is especially true on the greens.
They say Tiger had a lot of different strokes for different folks, as well.
And thus his wife showed him the alternative use for a 9 iron.

Well that is absolutely true. My bugaboo with putting was pulling the putt left a lot. This grip change corrected that.
If you pull putts look at Nicklaus’ placement of his hands on putter – called opposing, left weak, right strong.
But this hand position makes it very hard for right hand to over power the left and pull the putt.
My “normal” is now overlay. I am much more consistent than I was when I used interlaced 20+ years ago. After a long break, when I picked up the game in 2020, the overlay was easier on my fingers. Age and arthritis are both an issue.
Luckily I am free of arthritis so far. Fingers crossed… grin.
I’ve never used interlocking or overlay grip for putting.
Just hold it like a baseball bat.
Interlocking on all other clubs though.
