Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

It is Tuesday. What is your favorite QB doing today?

Minneapolis allegedly hosting the 2028 NFL draft. Big nothing for me, but some people enjoy that. I guess if the team really sucks and has a top 5 pick, it could be entertaining. Still not interested in fighting that crowd and $20 beers. I will say, the NFL is good at making money.

Beware – golf story. Just got back from playing nine.
So go to the range to hit a few balls first. It’s hot, no one there. Pick the next to last spot on right. Hit a few, look up and a small group of Asians walk up next to me. One was carrying a large pro bag and a couple guys had cameras.
Oh well, hit a few more, look over and Hideki Matsuyama is standing there. dressed exactly like he was going to a tour event.
He starts hitting and this is what amazed me. He had a coach, two cameramen (side and back), caddie and I guess a towel boy. But after every single shot, they would study every aspect of the swing and make even the smallest of adjustments. The drive for precision was simply amazing. It is no wonder these guys at this level are so good.
Interestingly, after I played nine drove by the range and he was still there with his group practicing – and it was hot.
And by the way, I was tryin g to do my absolute best to not look like a complete fool standing there hitting shots besides one of the best ball strikers in the worlld.

Wow… very cool. I would have probably said something like “Hideki, let me show you what you’re doing wrong”. To get a laugh. Then I would let him know I thought he was really great.

I was in the war. I served with plenty of people who were real unhappy about it, and disagreed with it. Don’t know what this video is on about. Might watch, might not. My singular point is everyone has a point of view and an opinion.

I understand that. I haven’t watched it, and I likely won’t. War is an ugly thing, and until you actually participate in it, and do ugly things to other people, you don’t really know how that affects you. It’s truly an individual response. Killing someone is a terrible thing. It makes you question who you are and what you’re doing. That is the normal human effect. You will always question your own and others morality eventually. It’s a reckoning I hope you never have to go through.

For all here, I strongly suggest you read Sowell’s book Black Redneck’s and White Liberals. It’s a series of essays on several different topics.

Sowell’s first essay, which shares the book’s title, begins with this provocative quote:

“These people are creating a terrible problem in our cities. They can’t or won’t hold a job, they flout the law constantly and neglect their children, they drink too much and their moral standards would shame an alley cat. For some reason or other, they absolutely refuse to accommodate themselves to any kind of decent, civilized life.”

Sowell continues: “This was said in 1956 in Indianapolis, not about blacks or other minorities, but about poor whites from the South… A 1951 survey in Detroit found that white Southerners living there were considered ‘undesirable’ by 21 percent of those surveyed, compared to 13 percent who ranked blacks the same way”

Sowell’s main thesis in this essay is that what we know today as “black culture” is actually “white redneck culture” or “cracker culture” which “originated not in the South but in those parts of the British Isles from which white Southerners came. That culture long ago died out where it originated in Britain, while surviving in the American South. Then it largely died out among both white and black Southerners, while still surviving today in the poorest and worst of the urban black ghettos.”

My youngest is 9 now, this is his first year of kid-pitch baseball. Not sure how the rules run elsewhere, but if the opposing pitcher throws 4 balls, I get to step in and throw to our batter to finish his at-bat. (they can strike out, but can’t walk at this stage).

I have mixed emotions – I’m leading the league in strike outs!

Absolutely not, and sorry for making you think that.

The movie referenced is based on the premise that each generation becomes stupider than the previous. If you haven’t seen it, I do recommend it.

They released it and it went almost directly to shelf because of how reflective of society it was……..’scary true.’

I just thought the movie parallels the quote nicely.

The Teacher (aka my wife) just retired after 25 years of teaching in SoCal.
She can compile a list for you but I doubt you will believe it or instead play the ‘both sides do it’ card.
She taught reading to 1st graders but after all of the DEI/Woke/BS she had inserted into the schedule she had less that two hours a day to teach the kids to read. And then the wondered why the school, the district, the state, the nation had such low reading and math scores.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.” This is what’s happening in America today. I am deeply concerned by the dangerous philosophy that believes the state—not the parents—should be the primary educator on gender, sexuality, and racial issues.

The most visible failure though is academic performance. As of February 2026, the latest NAEP results publicly available are from 2024, those results show reading and math performance remaining below 2019 levels, with continued challenges in both subjects and uneven recovery across grades. Our children learn less every year.

The current educational framework has shifted away from its traditional goals of knowledge transmission and cognitive skill development. Instead, it focuses on fostering self-esteem and social harmony, which undermines academic rigor.

Students are also being taught to be activists and teachers are taking them out of the classroom to protest. This is called indoctrination and specifically anti American sentiments, antisemitic positions, and gender ideology are the focus.

Sowell observed that facts and critical thinking have taken a back seat to indoctrination and activism in schools:

“We are raising whole generations who’ve come to regard facts as optional. We have kids in elementary school who are urged to take stands on political issues, to write letters to congressman and the president about nuclear energy…They are taught that it’s important to have views and they’re not being taught that it’s important to know what you’re talking about, that it’s important to listen to the opposite viewpoint. And more important how to distinguish how view point A and viewpoint B are different, and which one has the most evidence or logic behind it.”

“The very thought that the dogmas they [teachers] were repeating with such fervor might be open to question or subject to evidence seemed never to have occurred to them. This was a far more ominous sign than their merely being wrong on particular beliefs. How can they teach anybody else to think if they themselves have not reached this elementary level of logic? By ‘thinking’ too many educators today mean teaching children to reject traditions in favor of their own emotional responses. Objections to such propaganda programs are called objections to letting children think. Anything less than a blank check for indoctrination is called ‘censorship.’”

“In light of such non-academic activities in our public schools, it can hardly be surprising that American youngsters do so badly on academic tests administered to youngsters around the world. Nor is it surprising that academic work is so readily abandoned for social experiments, ideological crusades and psychological manipulations by educators whose own academic performances have long been shown to be substandard.”

“This is yet another way of getting away from academic work and indulging in psychological and ideological indoctrination. This is called advancing beyond ‘rote learning’ and teaching school children to ‘think.’”

Sowell’s research clearly showed that indoctrinating our children into an ideological view was more important than teaching them anything of use.

Haha not a fan of olives? No, history starts with the Martini being a more complex and sweeter drink and garnished with a cocktail cherry, and as the drink evolved over the years and the types and amounts of gin and vermouth changed, the sweet cherry clashed with the dry/herbal/savoryness of the drink and somewhere along the line, probably in New York City win the late 1890s someone started adding an olive to compliment the drink more and the rest is history.

Okay, too early to argue with a brick wall. FOOTBALL TALK TIME. I’m glad BFlo is our DC, however I think his lawsuit is a bit much, and crying he wasn’t hired for racial reasons is the incorrect way to approach it and I feel its not the reason he was passed up. I also think the Rooney rule needs to not be a thing. This is a nepo issue, you scratch my back I scratch yours, or I only hire my friends etc. issue and not a race issue imo. If you are good at your job and prove you can win, a team is going to hire you in 2026. Period. Now, teams bringing in someone just to check the box on the Rooney rule is absolutely happening but thats not because they are racist, its because any DEI rule is stupid and they want to hire whoever they think is best. Paying to tank is also a whole other issue.

This ^ Exactly. I get it, there’s pieces of shit out there that do discriminate but its few and far between, and in a company the size of the NFL that has African Americans employed at every level and phase I very much doubt in 2026 people ARENT hiring because of the color of someone’s skin. And forcing a rule to just check a box is stupid and pointless, and its why the Broncos and Giants did what they did.

I think his initial thought/goal was that the NFL or some teams would pay a settlement to make the suit/him go away. When it didn’t happen, he has no other option than to double down and continue looking for a payday. Knowing nearly 80% of the league’s players are non-white, the thought that racism is keeping him from being a coach is ludicrous. There are many non-white coaches and coordinators across the league, so I think he is still hoping for settlement, knowing he probably can’t win on merits. And I think that’s precisely why the NFL hasn’t settled.

Can’t have a surprise onsides kick anymore. Oh no. You can only try that if you tell the ref’s who then advise the other team, so everyone can line up the way they used to. Bullshit calls like taunting are stupid too. All that bullshit virtue signaling as well. You know all those military support events? Yeah the DoW pays the NFL for all those things. And this is the biggest thing ruining the game today and will be the eventual downfall of the country’s most popular sport.

Allowing all of the rampant betting will eat away at the watchability and trustworthiness of the game. It’s tough not to see how the games are influenced these days. All in the name of “entertainment.”

Not accepting that the Iranian Islamic Regime will do whatever they can to destroy the U.S. and Israel along with anyone else they deem worthy of destruction is about as ignorant a take as there can be. History clearly shows this is a vicious regime that kills its own citizens by the tens of thousands. Hangs them on the streets in public, and tells the world “you’re next”. There is a long list of attacks on the U.S. if you ever care to invest the time and look it up. Still every other President has done nothing about it for over 40 years, and now we have a real President taking them down.

Well so far the Dem’s have been wrong on Trump every single time. Not once have they told us anything they warned us about come to pass JR. Trump was right all along on COVID and the shots. He was right about tariff’s too. Remember the chicken little howling that came up and the left told us he was going to cause a depression? Nope. He was right about the border security issue. Biden said he needed new legislation, Trump said we just needed a new President. The Dem’s scream to abolish ICE and defund the police. Trump backs the Blue, and law and order. No other President in the last 40 years has done anything about Iran. All of them told us they had to be stopped. None of them had the balls to do it. Oh by the way, the world climate change folks just admitted that climate change isn’t going to destroy the planet after years of fearmongering. Trump was right again. Over, and over, and over. Trump is right, the Dem’s are wrong. I could gone on, and on, and on. At every turn we find the lefts corruption, lies, deceit, and fraud. They have two objectives, destroy Trump and destroy the country.

ANYONE who watches any kind of political discourse now-a-days can see how this happens on both sides all the time. Most people no longer stand on principal. They just dig their heels in to defend their political identity. It’s what made Dems continue to deny the attacks from the right of a sleepy Joe Biden and it’s what makes Republicans now ignore that we have a sleepy Trump. Like Trump has for sure done some good things, no doubt, but there has been some very questionable things especially this 2nd term. It is nice, starting to see more and more Republicans start to actually think and act like Republicans rather than brain washed MAGA drones.

Yes. Madden playbooks are taken from real NFL playbooks and concepts.

Dumbed down, not nearly as intricate and nuanced – but they’ve gotten progressively more detailed as the game has aged. Used to be just basic concepts and routes – now you see more option routes based on coverages, hot routes, etc.

Where the game has really evolved is with what you can do in audible packages – changing everything from the blocking assignments to route combinations.

Fun tool to use to teach the game to youngsters – I use it with my nephew all the time.

What’s your favorite QB doing today?:

My all time favorite quarterback is currently strolling the practice fields in Valhalla. No doubt appreciating the sun and wildlife as he did as a young boy growing up in Goodland, Kansas – after moving there from his birthplace of Scottsbluff, Nebraska (and having a tiny Husker helmet placed in his crib at birth)

That quarterback is Brook Berringer – Husker legend. I’m convinced he would’ve been a 10 year NFL vet had he lived. Instead, on April 18, 1996 he took one last flight as an amateur pilot. His soul never touched the ground. RIP.

My all time favorite non-Vikings QB? Jake Delhomme. Loved this guy. His career numbers are so so but this guy was tough, and could lead a team.

My all time favorite Vikings quarterback? Probably gotta go with Favre (especially if we’re talking just one season) If it’s a homegrown Vikings QB I’m going with Daunte Culpepper (despite the tiny hands and how it ended)

Everybody knows teams win championships. A team needs a QB that can put up TD’s and execute long, time consuming drives that keep the other teams offense on the sideline. That was what Cousins has always done. So yeah, 298 TD’s in 50 fewer games than Elway? That’s impressive. Unfortunately the reality is, there’s 52 other guys that a team must have to win championships. Note how Mahomes could only muster 9 points in the Super Bowl against the Bucs, when most of his O-line was injured in the playoffs. Without his O-line, his offense was tepid. That’s the way in works in the real world.

Elway didn’t win a Super Bowl till Shanahan built a defense and a running game to carry him across the finish line. Elway will always be a legendary QB, but teams win championships. The Orange Crush was legendary too.

Guy is one of the best QB’s to ever play for the Vikings IMO. Put up good numbers, gave the team a chance to win every week. Set records. Much more fun than watching whatever last season was IMO. His accuracy and durability were things I really appreciated about him.

By your measures, the Bengals are getting grifted by Burrow. No SB’s, tons of injuries, not worth it to not be able to pay defense. Some players on teams are always going to get paid, and premium positions more so. Can’t blame him Rick was willing to pony up.

Burrow is a statistical and proven winner and multiple levels of ball and has been to and played in more play off games then Kirk could dream of. And won them. Let alone making a super bowl. To me, thats where the comparison ends and you can keep your “This many random stats” Banners. I have never, nor will ever care or acknowledge Kirks stats in an argument. And will leave it at that.

Trophy room bare still.

Also, let me ask you this: Do you think JJ stays in MN if he’s not getting good QB play? If we have the stuff we’ve had the last year, no way he isn’t demanding a trade out or signing somewhere else. Again, Kirk helped him set NFL records. A non-good QB doesn’t do that.

Thats great, winning trumps personal accolades. JJ himself has stated that. I never said Kirk wasn’t “good” he mediocre. Average. And his stats reflect his ability to stay healthy and play long enough to accumulate those #s. Thats it. Hence the Vikings barren Trophy room. Thats the only room I care about. Could care less about which QB gets it. All I knew after 2019 and still know now is Kirk isnt capable of that. Period.

Do you think Fran Tarkenton was a QB incapable of winning the super bowl simply because he never did? Should we look back on his career with disdain because he never filled the trophy case?

Should we claim Alan Page, Carl Eller, Adrian Peterson, etc were all somehow imperfect because they never brought a championship to Minnesota?

Should we hail Trent Dilfer as great because he has won a trophy? Just doesn’t seem to be a lot of nuance to your argument, KFEY

Agreed. The “super bowl or not” argument is tough. There are great players who never got a ring, and just because they didn’t doesn’t mean they weren’t good or capable of getting one. Kirk was plenty capable of doing it with a sufficient o-line IMO. Unfortunately, the line averaged bottom 25% most of his time in MN I think.

Exactly, he played behind a shitty O-line nearly his whole time here and still put up really good numbers….People point at the loss to the Giants…anyone who watched that game understands our D was a total sieve…but let’s put it on Kirk.

Love the optimism but I don’t see JJ (QB) winning the QB1 job, doubt it will be a fair ‘competition’ at this point.
Best we can hope for is for him to come in during injury release and do well enough to keep the job.

The time has come for the organization to work on the long term plan for QB. The Packers have had three QB1’s since 1992. That’s a plan in action. Get a solid vet, draft a rookie and see if he has the goods to be a long term starter. If not, get rid of him and draft another rookie. When you find the next long term answer, let the vet go.

Yep. As I said, “get” a solid vet. Then find that guy who has what it takes to be a long term starter. That long term starter doesn’t begin and end with his level of athleticism. The most important traits are a fast brain (processing) and an accurate arm. Fans are turned on by great athletes, with big powerful arms. In the NFL, processing and accuracy are what separates QB’s.

They had a solid vet, but they screwed up and let him go, before they found the solid follow on starter. As I said, the Packers have had three QB1’s since 1992. You don’t let the solid vet starter go, till you have the solid starter replacement on the roster.

The Pukers may have only had 3 starting QBs since 92, but they were in QB carousel mode for 30 years before that. They were lucky Favre worked out and lucky he didn’t leave the year they drafted Rogers. Rogers pissed and moaned about them drafting Love .

Kirk would not sign with the Vikings, once he was told they were going to draft a QB. Same pretty much goes for Darnold and Jones last year. They did not re-sign because they knew they were not going to be the long term future for the Vikings.

Kirk wouldn’t sign with the Vikings because they were stringing him along on one year deals, and refused to commit to a no trade clause. They drafted Nate Stanley, Kellen Mond, and Jaren Hall while Cousins was there right? He wasn’t bothered by that.

Getting hit because of the actually worst O line in the league for years on end while carrying your entire team will do that. Kid’s been to a bowl and is capable of putting up top QB numbers consistently regardless of competition. Vikes would immediately be SB contenders with him on the roster. He’s my top QB.

Our o-line hasn’t been much better – probably be the same situation here to be honest. But you pay him and the WR’s big bucks and some things have to suffer. Almost like every team has to deal with this conundrum…

It statistically has been better the past 5 years then the Bengal’s, that is quantifiable. So I dont buy that. Just like I dont buy the “Hurrr duuur Kirk never played behind a good O line its not his fault” conspiracy.

But yes, what I stated was a fantasy dream of having him on this team on the cheap, its not realistic nor did I expect it to be. Im aware of what he would have to be paid and the capitol it would take to get him. It was hypothetical.
