Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

It’s Memorial Day weekend! The fam and I are heading to the hills of Fargo, as kiddo is participating in the T.J. Hockenson Youth Football camp on Sunday morning. I’m not sure if we’ll have visual access to the action at the camp, but if we do, I’ll post some videos on our Twitter page and on here. If we don’t, I’ll try to get kiddo to do a little write-up after the camp. Either way, we plan to have a good time.

A funny little story. I have a 2014 Honda Accord that I drive for my business, it’s a great little car with a 6 speed manual, I bought it 2-3 years ago for $12,000, and have put over 100,000 miles on it with zero problems. Even though it has quite a few miles on it, it runs perfect and is in immaculate condition. Last week, it started making a faint rattling sound that I couldn’t diagnose, so I took it to the dealer for a look-see. They told me the transmission is shot, and would cost $16,000 to replace and that it can’t be rebuilt. I think the guy was sober, too. I was fully prepared for sticker shock, and I still got sticker shock. They also said that they could only give me $200 for the car on a trade in. LOL, they must think I’m stupid. I’m looking around at other options. Lesson: never take your car to the dealer unless you have Elon Musk money.

Vikings & NFL News

At Vikings.com, they study film of rookie DL Caleb Banks.

Yahoo Sports shares some opinions about the status of the Vikings’ search for a new GM.

The NFL acknowledged that their Monday Night Football experiment was a mistake, and will end the double-headers, per Yahoo Sports. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that the NFL admitted that they made a mistake.

Media Selection

A good discussion between Shawn Ryan and Tulsi Gabbard. Enjoy!

  • Keep politics to a minimum. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be respectful and civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument, not the poster.

Bears as in the NFL type? ewww
Beets, um no thank you.
Battlestar Galactica? I never really got into that show. Saw it a few times not interested enough to make it part of my schedule.

Otherwise nice and quiet today, recovering from a hectic week.

Kyle Busch died from ‘severe pneumonia’.This is especially concerning to me as I have had pneumonia twice and was told that each time you get it getting it again become more likely.
Plus will all his resources and access to medical greatly outpaces the rest of us. Part of the reason I Power Walk on an indoor track that I pay to access instead of just walking around the neighborhood.

Laughing… got a call from one of my guys yesterday asking me a bunch of questions about the Middle East. He’s been re-assigned to cover that area, and wanted to know my contacts, area’s of concern, assets in-place, etc. Spoke with him for well over an hour. For some reason I was having a good day, and really gave him a lot.

A lot of hondas are built in Ohio (Marysville i think), and a lot of nissans in Tennesee.

For all you military types out there, Outback is offering a 20% off Heroes Discount May 23 through May 27. 20% off is pretty good.

So we went to Outback for lunch and they said the 20% discount was last week. I tried to find the ad I saw on my phone, but couldn’t. They have a standard 10% military discount though, so we got that. Still kinda bugged me I couldn’t find the 20% discount I know I saw this morning.

I tried to find it as well but their website only list the 10% discount.
Thought maybe it was a local/Florida thing.

Yeah, I know I wasn’t hallucinating, but couldn’t find it on my phone. Wouldn’t have posted it here if I hadn’t seen it. Haven’t searched for it since getting home. Watching the Brooks Koepka group playing the 3rd round on ESPN+.

Hey GF, quick online search for 2014 Honda Accord rebuilt transmissions provided the following. That said, I wonder how a rattle cannot be repaired. I had a guy that had a small shop in Seffner FL, who was the most fair, honest, and reliable auto mechanic I’ve ever known. Retired Air Force guy. Died 3 years ago. I sure miss him as a person and a mechanic.

My first thought is that they just don’t want to deal with it so they are quoting you a ridiculously high amount to get you to go away.

Dealerships treat customers/suckers like cows that need to be milked as frequently as possible.

I got my wife a used BMW Z4 hard top convertable 12 years ago for her 50th bday. It was a 2012 with 18000 miles. Got it for $30K. She now has 92000 miles on it.

3 years ago she was getting a pinging in the engine took it to a BMW shop and tbey recommended a new engine, along with a list of everthing else she should do. No way a BMW with that low of mileage should need a new engine. So she took it to her mechanic, he looked at the list and laughed. He said the recommendation of struts is the only valid thing. So he did that, changed oil while “flushing things out” (whatever that means). And the pinging went away. We stay away from dealers

My old Tacoma was having engine problems so I took it to the local dealer as I had just gotten out of the Army so I didn’t know a local mechanic.
They gave me a laundry list of repairs that needed doing after an $89 ‘inspection’. I asked a neighbor who recommended a good mechanic who replaced the spark plug wires and solved the problem.
I went back to the dealership to get my $89 back and they finally admitted that ‘a few of their mechanics get creative’ and gave me a full refund.
Wankers!!

Yeah, $1,600 worth of creative.
I have little doubt that they are encouraged by the management to exercise their ‘creative side’.

I know someone in the car dealership business. Dealers make a large percentage of their money on shop work.

Happy memorial weekend. Here in Jackson, we had the remains of a WWII pilot returned this week. He was shot down during a dog fight in the Pacific. But not before taking down a few Japanese fighters, per the story told to his family by another pilot that was in the fight as well. His remains were identified, using DNA testing, in 2025.

Our local funeral home made the arrangements with the military to have his remains transported back to his home town of Jackson. The remains flew into MSP airport yesterday morning and the transport back to Jackson was given an escort by each counties law enforcement between Minneapolis and Jackson.

Lt. Ruth will be laid to rest this coming Friday. With full military honors and a possible flyover in a plane Lt. Ruth flew while training.

Morning FL. we are in the middle of a much needed rainy stretch. But yesterday was dry and windy so i got 18 holes in. First round of the year i felt comfortable. Only 2 crappy shots. Shot an 87 (par 70). Could have been better but i dont think i made any 8-12 foot putts. Yet most of my 20+ foot putts i put to within a foot. Better than mowing the lawn……

Hey PA, nice that you got out and played 18. Good score in the wind too, for sure. Putting comes and goes. One day you have it, the next day you don’t. Watched Brooks Koekpa drain every putt on Thursday and shoot an 8 under par round, then yesterday his putter was cold. Still shot two under though.

This is one of my favorite stories.

In 1990, Lee Trevino called the shot that won him the 11th U.S. Senior Open title.

“Jack has a habit of peeking on these, sometimes gets ’em a little right,” Trevino said on national television as Nicklaus stood over a 4-foot par putt on the 17th hole.

Nicklaus, making a late run at Trevino, had to sink the putt to keep his chances alive.

But, as Trevino predicted, the putt went a little to the right, just enough to catch the lip of the cup and spin out.

“Trophy,” Trevino howled, grabbing his golf cap and pulling it down over his ears.

“Give me the trophy!”

The bogey-6 dropped Nicklaus two shots back with one hole to go.

I was watching the tournament on TV when this happened. I’ll never forget it. Trevino calling the shot on live television.

Lee Trevino was my mother’s favorite golfer – Until Lefty Mickelson came along. But she loved Lee.

She even sent him a fan letter when he was struck by lightning – a story I didn’t know until after she had passed away.
