Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

It’s Memorial Day weekend! The fam and I are heading to the hills of Fargo, as kiddo is participating in the T.J. Hockenson Youth Football camp on Sunday morning. I’m not sure if we’ll have visual access to the action at the camp, but if we do, I’ll post some videos on our Twitter page and on here. If we don’t, I’ll try to get kiddo to do a little write-up after the camp. Either way, we plan to have a good time.

A funny little story. I have a 2014 Honda Accord that I drive for my business, it’s a great little car with a 6 speed manual, I bought it 2-3 years ago for $12,000, and have put over 100,000 miles on it with zero problems. Even though it has quite a few miles on it, it runs perfect and is in immaculate condition. Last week, it started making a faint rattling sound that I couldn’t diagnose, so I took it to the dealer for a look-see. They told me the transmission is shot, and would cost $16,000 to replace and that it can’t be rebuilt. I think the guy was sober, too. I was fully prepared for sticker shock, and I still got sticker shock. They also said that they could only give me $200 for the car on a trade in. LOL, they must think I’m stupid. I’m looking around at other options. Lesson: never take your car to the dealer unless you have Elon Musk money.

Vikings & NFL News

At Vikings.com, they study film of rookie DL Caleb Banks.

Yahoo Sports shares some opinions about the status of the Vikings’ search for a new GM.

The NFL acknowledged that their Monday Night Football experiment was a mistake, and will end the double-headers, per Yahoo Sports. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that the NFL admitted that they made a mistake.

Media Selection

A good discussion between Shawn Ryan and Tulsi Gabbard. Enjoy!

I must say, my love for the NFL seems to wane a little bit more every year. They don’t represent my core beliefs and tenets anymore. The woke ideology they pursue makes me want to throw up.

Mjolnir

I also don’t agree with the woke ideology the NFL has adopted as of late.

I don’t agree with much of what Roger Goodell has done as commissioner of the league.

I’m aware of the PR machine that the NFL has become – charging for sponsorships like ‘Salute to Service’ and ‘My Cause, My Cleats’ and letting the public think it’s done out of altruism is gross – Though emphasis/support given to our troops, paid for or otherwise, I don’t have a problem with. They don’t get enough support. Would love to see the NFL have a ‘Salute to Law Enforcement’ but the universe would implode.

None of the above will stop me from watching the NFL.

I watch Vikes games in tune with Paul Allen & Pete Bercich – so whatever the tv broadcast is trying to put out there, I don’t hear it.

Sunday mornings I’m watching Fantasy Football Now on ESPN2 usually – not a bunch of fluff/woke pieces there. Usually just information relevant to who’s hot, who’s not. Who’s starting. Injury reports, etc. I have a multiscreen setup in my living room (3 screens) so I’ve got Sunday NFL Countdown on another screen (muted) and a local channel on the 3rd screen (also muted).

I’m in Lincoln, Nebraska so I’m close enough I get most Vikes games locally – I also have NFL+ Premium for RedZone as well as the radio calls of every game.

I haven’t bought a piece of Vikings gear in years – most of what I’ve received are gifts. Few jerseys in the closet (Favre, Carter) and I’ll likely never buy another. Mainly because I can’t wear a jersey of a kid younger than me – it feels weird to me. I don’t know why. Occasionally I’ll buy a piece of Vikes memorabilia off EBay.

My point is it’s relatively easy, for me, to ignore most of the woke nonsense that the NFL has adopted in recent years. Not all of it – can’t ignore the painted end zones, the ‘stop hate’ on the back of helmets – which carries the same impact as a fucking land acknowledgment. But most of the bullshit I can ignore.Timely use of the mute button as well as the option to listen to radio calls during national broadcasts (MNF, SNF, TNF) makes this possible for me.

I’m too much of a football junkie to give it up – and supplementing it with college or local high school ball won’t cut it – I’m already a rabid fan of both.

Quite the set-up you got going on there. How do you get the PA broadcast? I mute the game, and just watch it without any commentary for the most part. Don’t watch any pregame shows, halftime shows, or postgame shows either.

Unless you’re doing it thru a licensed NFL broadcast, or you’re within range of a Vikes affiliate via terrestrial radio you won’t find it.

NFL has the great paywall to negotiate.

its one of my favorite features about NFL+ Premium.

it also helps that I got the deal near the superb owl – they offered a year for $59.99, down from the normal $99. So it costs me $5 a month and I watch it a ton in the offseason.

With NFL+ Premium you get 24/7 NFL Network, RedZone on Sundays, Game replays – including ALL22 aaaaand live home or away radio broadcasts of each game, in some cases the option for a national radio broadcast is there as well.

You can stream on multiple devices so on Sundays I watch RedZone on my SmartTV and then from the NFL app on my phone I stream the PA/Bercich radio call – and send it to my Alexa.

Non-Vikes games I’ll find the game on the app and go between home and away radio broadcasts.

Yeah, McCarthy didn’t look like a pro QB to me last year. He was pretty bad for being in the second year in a system. Folks can say he was hurt his first year, but that just took all the pressure off, and he should have spent his whole time mastering the offense. Instead, he looked like a rookie. I think this is what KOC saw. I guy who should have been a lot better and farther down the road at that point, not really running the offense very well.

Year two is generally the year you see the greatest jump in a QB’s growth. Year one, everything is mostly a blur. The game is too fast, too complicated, and too hard. NFL offensive schemes are way beyond anything they’ve ever imagined. This is why I thought McCarthy would be pretty good this year. A whole year to learn about the NFL, and how the Vikings scheme worked.

Plus will all his resources and access to medical greatly outpaces the rest of us. Part of the reason I Power Walk on an indoor track that I pay to access instead of just walking around the neighborhood.

Yeah some issue with him ‘aspirating’ that causes it. Drs hope that they have a handle on it now.

‘Food aspiration occurs when food, liquid, or stomach contents accidentally enter your airway and lungs instead of your stomach. It is often caused by swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and can lead to serious lung infections like aspiration pneumonia.’

It is pretty common in dementia patients, I worked with a number of people over the years who died from pneumonia caused by repeated aspiration. We all aspirated from time to time, we just call it, down the wrong tube but it can cause illness.

I got my wife a used BMW Z4 hard top convertable 12 years ago for her 50th bday. It was a 2012 with 18000 miles. Got it for $30K. She now has 92000 miles on it.

3 years ago she was getting a pinging in the engine took it to a BMW shop and tbey recommended a new engine, along with a list of everthing else she should do. No way a BMW with that low of mileage should need a new engine. So she took it to her mechanic, he looked at the list and laughed. He said the recommendation of struts is the only valid thing. So he did that, changed oil while “flushing things out” (whatever that means). And the pinging went away. We stay away from dealers

My old Tacoma was having engine problems so I took it to the local dealer as I had just gotten out of the Army so I didn’t know a local mechanic.
They gave me a laundry list of repairs that needed doing after an $89 ‘inspection’. I asked a neighbor who recommended a good mechanic who replaced the spark plug wires and solved the problem.
I went back to the dealership to get my $89 back and they finally admitted that ‘a few of their mechanics get creative’ and gave me a full refund.

Happy memorial weekend. Here in Jackson, we had the remains of a WWII pilot returned this week. He was shot down during a dog fight in the Pacific. But not before taking down a few Japanese fighters, per the story told to his family by another pilot that was in the fight as well. His remains were identified, using DNA testing, in 2025.

Our local funeral home made the arrangements with the military to have his remains transported back to his home town of Jackson. The remains flew into MSP airport yesterday morning and the transport back to Jackson was given an escort by each counties law enforcement between Minneapolis and Jackson.

Lt. Ruth will be laid to rest this coming Friday. With full military honors and a possible flyover in a plane Lt. Ruth flew while training.

This is one of my favorite stories.

In 1990, Lee Trevino called the shot that won him the 11th U.S. Senior Open title.

“Jack has a habit of peeking on these, sometimes gets ’em a little right,” Trevino said on national television as Nicklaus stood over a 4-foot par putt on the 17th hole.

Nicklaus, making a late run at Trevino, had to sink the putt to keep his chances alive.

But, as Trevino predicted, the putt went a little to the right, just enough to catch the lip of the cup and spin out.

“Trophy,” Trevino howled, grabbing his golf cap and pulling it down over his ears.

“Give me the trophy!”

The bogey-6 dropped Nicklaus two shots back with one hole to go.

I was watching the tournament on TV when this happened. I’ll never forget it. Trevino calling the shot on live television.

Gone fishin'

I'm a dad, husband, Army vet, believer, and a die-hard, life-long Vikings fan from the great state of North Dakota. I've been a Viking fan dating back to 1980, I've been covering the Vikings for nearly a decade, and I founded Skoloholics in 2022. I work in real estate and property management, I love spending time with family, working in the yard, doing anything in the outdoors, and as you can tell from my username, I love fishing.
