Minnesota Vikings News and Discussion – Weekend Edition

28 May – 30 May 2022

Hey, sorry about forgetting to post the weekend thread. The fish are biting, so that’s where my focus and attention has been.

From Vikings.com, Harrison Phillips was mic’d up during OTAs, hear Wes Phillips address the media, and there’s tons more to search through in the video vault..

There isn’t a whole lot of new news, so have at it in the comments. Have a great Memorial Day weekend, and most of all, be cool to one another.

Let’s look at how rookie head coaches fared last year:

  • Eagles: Nick Sirianni (9-8), made playoffs.
  • Chargers: Brandon Staley (9-8)
  • Falcons: Arthur Smith (7-10)
  • Jets: Robert Saleh (4-13)
  • Texans: David Culley (4-13)
  • Lions: Dan Campbell (3-13-1)
  • Jaguars: Urban Meyer (2-11), fired.

Matt Nagy owns the best rookie head coach record in NFL history with his 12-4 first year in 2018. It is not impossible for KOC to match that, but only one guy in history has done it, so.

It is much more likely rosie matches Saleh, Culley, or Campbell. What kind of teams they inherited matters too. What were their teams records the year before? I wouldn’t expect much of a change unless a big infusion of talent came in and greasy adolf completely fucked up the draft according to almost every talking head not a Vikings fan, so hope of success should be tempered.

Hope of success should be tempered because historically the vast majority of rookie HC’s fail to win many games in their first season. Most have losing seasons. The Vikings do have veterans who showed a lot of fight last year though and they will not go gentle into that good night as it were.

Most new head coaches inherit a team devoid of talent.

We ended up with eight players yesterday so they divided us up into two teams of four. The game was each hole was played as a match hole, and the best two scores from each team would be added together. For instance, on the first hole my bogey and another guys bogey combined for a score of 10. The opposing team’s score was 11 so we won the hole. I had 4 pars and only three doubles. Had 11 bogeys mostly having to lay up every hole because my driver was balky. But laying up and hitting a pitching wedge or sand wedge into the holes to try and save par wasn’t bad. I also hit the flag stick on a par three, but the ball kicked and rolled about 20 feet away. in the end we lost by one hole. We each handed over $20 to a player on the opposing team to settle up. My 89 was the low score on my team, the opposing team had a guy who shot 79. Former collegiate golfer who plays this course a lot and made the tee times. Go figure.

I went to a sunrise service today and there were so many people there. Brought some tears to my eyes as I remembered some of the young men and women I served with who gave their life for this country. This included Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee who was killed in Kabul by a suicide bomber and whom I’d met just two weeks earlier. The people I have had the priviledge to know and serve with are remarkable and true believers in our country. They defend her against all enemies foreign and domestic with their very lives. I have sorrow in my heart, but pride as well.

No, but they have them in there. We caught about 24 walleyes, kept like 7 or 8. Can keep 4 fish each (8 possession) and can have 1 walleye under 18, as many as your limit allows between 18-21 or 22, and 1 over 22. Most of the ones we threw back were 16-17. It snowed last week and they said it slowed them as the water temps plummeted.

Thanks Joe Biden!👍

The unemployment rate in 17 states concentrated in the Midwest, South and Mountain West reached a record low in April, a sign of an unusually tight labor market.

The milestone in those states marks a sharp reversal from the spring of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic drove unemployment to record highs in 15 of those states, according to Labor Department data tracing back to 1976.

Two additional states—Oklahoma and Arkansas—hit record low unemployment rates earlier this year.

There is a huge problem, millions dropped out of the work force. Low unemployment is just based on new claims filed, lol. The labor force has shrunk dramatically.

Lifer

Reply to  Kodiak
29 May 2022 4:44 pm

I understand that based on the below from 2021 data..

“Workers who left the labor force during the pandemic are not counted among the unemployed, as per usual practice. As the economy improves, many of these workers may reenter the labor market, adding to the number currently counted as unemployed and in want of work. For that reason, Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve board of governors, recently suggested that those who left the labor force since February 2020 should be counted among the unemployed to gain a better understanding of the slump in the labor market.

Adjusting the unemployment rate for labor force exits, and also making a correction for measurement challenges that have affected government surveys in the pandemic, shows that the U.S. unemployment rate in February 2021 may have been as high as 9.9%, instead of 6.6% as officially reported.”

Adding these people to the officially unemployed would have produced a 2021 jobless rate of 8.9 percent instead of 8.6 percent, according to Heidi Shierholz of the Economic Policy Institute”

So if we look at current data clearly we’re well below those “added dropped out of the workforce” single digit percentages if we add them in to the current numbers.

Headed to the golf course. Playing a course where I can’t reach 9 of the holes in regulation including the first three holes. Last time I played the course I took an 8 on the first hole and a 7 on the second. The course is just too big for me. This is a golf outing and we have three tee times. They’re coming up with some sort of teams and money scheme. I won’t be of any help to my team off the tee for the most part. I can’t reach two of the par 3’s except maybe with my driver. I will be lucky to par 3 holes. Not looking forward to the day, but I will be determined to hit quality shots no matter what.

While your playing partners go big trying to distance out play conservative keeping the ball in play off the tee and focus on where your misses could be that won’t hurt you if you hit an off shot with your irons. Chipping and putting will be where you take the advantage.

Because I am much older than the rest of the guys and “distance challenged” I was allowed to play the whites. there were 9 holes I could not reach in regulation including a 225 yard par three. That hole had a carry of 170 yards over water. I hit three wood and barely landed over the water. Pitched the ball up the hill to about 25 feet and two putted for bogey.

So let’s all put our HC hats on and predict a game plan that will work to beat the Packers in the first game. Zimmer’s plan was to run the ball as much as possible, burn clock, shorten the game, and let the defense win it at the end. Is this the plan we need to adopt? Play conservatively, only throw the ball when we have to, and keep it close to the end?

The Packers base defense will be a 3-4. A lot of the time there will be four guys on the line of scrimmage and two (linebackers or safeties) behind them. Sometimes the defense will have five guys on the line and only one linebacker. The corners probably won’t press very often and will usually be in zone coverage. This scheme lends itself to be attacked with a TE running an out, or sitting down in the middle of the field. Hitting the RB out of the backfield will also be effective. Finally, the deep crosser beats this defense but that requires good protection for the QB as he has to hold the ball a little longer.

In Kube Jrs defense Irv is the difference maker for the offense if we can get going. Him off the line of scrimmage in the intermediate zones will keep the 2nd line of the defense guessing and busy. Then you work in Cook and Jefferson and you should be able to work what the defense gives you by play calling and Kirk audibles at the line.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  Lifer
29 May 2022 8:06 am

Audibles are an advanced level of offensive play. Every player on the field must fully master the offense before you can change play calls at the line and on the fly. The QB can recognize the situation and change the call, but the whole rest of the offense has to know what to do. Thus in a new scheme audibles can go wrong.

Lifer

It won’t be anything to complex like Manning or Marino did. I’m talking basic switch to run or pass. Easy option 1 or 2 which Kirk will detail in the huddle.

Which brings up another question, did the Rams run much no huddle? I think that fits Kirk’s fast mind and rhythm better than huddles. Hence why he’s so much more productive in the 2 min offense.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  Lifer
29 May 2022 8:20 am

Yes running an audible for a run or pass option is simpler, but still requires players to know their assignments and be able to quickly change in their brains what they are going to do. It sounds simple, but the offensive line is setting up for a pass play so the center is calling out protections and the line is preparing to take steps back and set. The QB changes the play to a sweep and the Guards are now pulling while the tackle fires off the line. Those are two completely different actions. So as I said, audibles require the whole team to be able to change instantaneously.

Running a no huddle is similar. The team must be well practiced and prepared to run a no huddle. The QB can know exactly what to do, but if the rest of the players don’t it ain’t gonna be pretty.

On the first Packer offensive play Hunter and Smith meet at the quarterback and Rogers suffers a broken collar bone. He remains injured for 2 years and leaves them with a monstrous cap issue…

Vikings win every Packer game for 3 years while the cheeseheads have no QB and no money. The Pack ends up doing a complete rebuild including the front office and the janitor…

This injury is of course not a planned event… but somewhere… a certain ACD person would be OK with it.

Honestly…. Bisi and KJ are incredibly similar in size and athletic profiles. They also compare very similarly to Deebo Samuel.

Nailor is close but is about 15lbs lighter than the other 3.

All 4 are good athletes but not the “freaks” of the underpants Olympics.

I like our depth on offense.

Gun control is a politically and emotionally charged topic.  The politics of gun control finds politicians crafting messages that appeal to potential voters who are horrified by gun-related deaths.  Unfortunately the emotions of gun control find people unwilling to consider the facts behind gun-related deaths.

There are numerous historical accounts of brutal despots, kings and tyrannical governments victimizing their subjugated citizens who were too powerless to resist.

The availability of firearms for self-defense has made it more difficult for governments and tyrants to victimize their citizens. This is one explanation about why the most murderous governments and despots in the last 150 years limited gun ownership and, in some cases, confiscated firearms from their citizens.

King George of England attempted to implement gun confiscation policies in the Colonies before the Revolutionary War.  We all know that didn’t work.  The King’s intent to disarm American colonists was one of the foundational reasons for our Founding Fathers adopting the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

Cops are trained and hired to carry a gun. Any issue that arises from their shooting incidents are of professional choice.

The American population have the ease and access to weapons of war designed for killing and then killing innocent Americans with those guns is a completely different issue.

But hey if dumb memes massage your conservative amygdala brain have at it.

This is the new “subliminal messaging” of the left. Guns are now “weapons of war”. None of the weapons ever used in any mass murder situation though were true weapons of war. They may have been AR’s but AR does not stand for “assault rifle”. It stands for the manufacturer’s name Armalite Rifle. While the rifles used resemble the weapons I used in combat, they are no where near the real thing. Civilians do not have access to the real weapons of war, so once again the left is misrepresenting reality to the public with their lying rhetoric.

Same old tired conservative trope comparing vehicles to guns. How weak of an argument. Police, to your point above, can easily stop a criminal in a vehicle as they do every day. One with a AR 15 is a different story vs a vehicle and last I checked you cant drive one in a classroom.

Funny you’re worried about undeveloped fetuses but grown children you’re not willing to support doing everything possible to reduce their death by firearms. How many school shooting we up to now mick?

I have recently read some disturbing facts about the case.
The shooter was an 18 year old cross dressing male.
He had recently purchased two very difficult guns to find/get that are valued at over $5000. The optics are also valued in thousands of dollars. The guns are very desirable and preferred by federal agents. He also was driving a $60,000 SUV.
The school door was suppose to be locked according to the school safety plan. A teacher had inadvertently left the door propped open.

Things that make you go huh?
Where did an 18 y/o kid get the money for the guns, optics, ammo, body armor?
How did an 18 y/o kid have access to that stuff? The guns in particular being very difficult to find.
Did he use a credit card to buy stuff online? Who’s was it?
Was the $60K SUV his? How? If not who’s is it?
What are the odds he would go to the one door in the school that had inadvertently been propped open even though it was supposed to be locked?
He fired outside the school for 12 minutes before entering the school. The school safety officer did not respond? Really?

Conspiracy theories aside, just the complete bungling by local law enforcement is atrocious at best. Cuffing parents, treating it as a hostage situation when kids are coming out covered in blood and calling from inside saying he’s shooting people. It finally took an armed boarder patrol agent to say enough and went in after him. One parent, a mother was cuffed, talked the police in to uncuffing her she’d leave, she sunk around climbed the fence went in and got her two kids hiding in a different classroom.

So much for the good guys with guns theory….

Another mass murderer known to the authorities who’d been reported as being someone who could do this.

Kodiak has valid points. Where did he get these specific weapons when he was made fun of for being poor?

Why are you arresting parents? Why are police standing around in the hill for 45 mins?

It was asked in a conversation… what would you do? If you have kids at home and you’re at something such as this? A school shooting…

Do you go in? Are your kids more important than someone else’s? Your paycheck? What is it?

If the guns are more important than our children’s safety and lives then our country is already lost NVF. What has your career been about were you defending our children or our guns?

100%. Criminals can and will always get guns, disarming the law abiding populace has absolutely nothing to do with fighting/reducing crime. It just makes one defenseless vs the government, and said criminals.

Then why do gun crimes drop dramatically in countries that ban guns? America isn’t some alternate universe where the effect would be different.

Why is it that kids can call 911 from their phones but we haven’t seen any video from inside the school?

They’re just elementary kids not like the parkland teenagers. They were fucking terrified would be my guess.

So your position is either teenagers don’t get scared or elementary kids aren’t smart enough to do that?

Neither are correct.

What are they hiding from you? No cameras in the school?

Really? It’s 2022.

No other adult in the school recorded anything?

How bout body cams from
The police who went in?

They’re still investigating would be my assumption. A lot went wrong with the response and I’d be willing to bet on such a hot button political issue they don’t want to release video thats going to cause a ruckus any worse than it already is.

Just like gun crimes have dropped dramatically here in places where gun laws are super strict. OH WAIT!!! The places that have the strictest gun laws also have the most gun crimes and are in the areas that demonrats run! The law abiding citizens can barely get a gun and the criminals are running wild!

I’m old, so I grew up in an era where there were a lot of westerns, and good vs evil, and the measure of a man is what he’d do when faced with danger. Would he turn coward or have excuses to not do the right thing?

Boy desperate to blame anything but the access to weapons of war. Sure broken families kids with no fathers is a bad recipe for a maladjusted kid but that may be the genesis of the dysfunction but certainly is not the acute issue of access to weapons that can kill. A teenager has emotional issues….shocked hence why easy access to guns should be banned.

Your arguments are always founded in logical fallacies Lifer. In this case you are engaged in what is known as “appeal to pity”.

An appeal to pity relies on provoking emotions to win an argument rather than factual evidence. Appealing to pity attempts to pull on an audience’s heartstrings, distract them, and erode support for their point of view.

Appeal to pity??? 19 elementary kids just got murdered by a unstable person with an assault rifle. That’s fact and if it doesn’t “pull at your heartstrings” and cause you to think objectively about your point of view then you must believe society doesn’t evolve, which is your own self created fallacy.

Your comment (19 elementary kids just got murdered by a unstable person with an assault rifle.) is the basis of your argument that we must take guns away from law abiding citizens. That is completely irrational, but boy it sure does pull at our heartstrings. I rest my case.

Lol….no it’s unstable people with guns that’s the point lost on you and many others. Rationalizing this down to single cause thinking that label identifies all the factors is asinine and only done by disingenuous people picking a political side. I just want kids to stop being slaughtered and if banning certain guns accomplishes that then good do it.

UK had a similar case a few decades ago, “Laws were changed, handguns were banned and the level of gun violence in Britain is now one of the lowest in the world.” Since the 1996 Dunblane massacre, they pointed out, “[t]here have been no more school shootings” in the United Kingdom.

But go on..keep saying and believing not drastically reducing the publics access to guns isn’t the way to solve these gruesome mass killings.

You’re really missing it and you’re throwing this “nobody cares about slaughters kids” argument at the wall hoping it’ll stick.

Last week libs were outraged they might not be able to kill children in the womb until the moment of birth, this week they’re outraged that kids are being slaughtered.

Last I checked.. they have a majority in both houses and the presidency. If these are legitimate issues they believe in instead of talking points to divide us more… they’d act.

But they want the division.

You are also not allowed to carry a fucking butter knife in London, so there´s that. They might have stopped “gun crime” (which there never was very much of anyway in the UK, or post-war Europe in general), so the thugs are roaming the streets and stabbing people because they know they don´t have to fear instant retribution by a citizen armed with a gun.

Gun control in Britain started with a school shooting. Gun control in Germany started with a school shooting. Gun control in Austria started with a school shooting. Odd, right?
