Hello Skoloholics! The Vikings and Packers faced off today in Green Bay. ESPN has stats, highlights, and more from the game. You can access the game thread here.
First Half:
At one point, the Packers had 14 points while they also had 14 total yards. This illustrates the first half quite well. Green Bay’s offense eventually added a couple scores. Every bounce seemed to go the wrong way for the Vikings, with the exception of the punt that the Vikings blocked. That blocked punt wound up being fairly meaningless, as the Vikings were unable to get the one yard necessary for a TD and settled for 3. Again, play calling.
The Vikings offense did very little for much of the half. The play calling was fairly atrocious, in my opinion. They seemed to force the run at times, and at other times, they seemed to be trying to force it to a certain player. The 2 interceptions aren’t really on Kirk. One bounced off of Hock, and the other was a ball tipped at the line. This was not a fun half of football to watch, which is a phrase uttered by many Vikings fans many times throughout this season.
Second Half:
The team continued to shoot themselves in the foot any time they began to generate momentum. The Vikings defense continued to allow a ton of yards, which was cute and all for a while, but it’s gotten old. The Packers didn’t light up the stat sheet, but they lit up the scoreboard. It’s kinda’ the opposite of the normal game where the Vikings give up a ton of yards but not so many points. Today, the opposite occurred. This was just an ugly day of football, and the second half was actually much worse than the first. Yuck. Nailor would up racking up some yards, which was cool. Mullens tossed a BEAUTIFUL TD to Osbourne late. Other than that, there was little to nothing to cheer about. Ugly, ugly, ugly football.
Summary
Throughout the game, the team did things to kill off any momentum they may have begun to build. The game began ugly and stayed ugly. The Vikings looked flat in most or all phases of the game. Greg Joseph missed two field goals, one right and one left. Our punter, Wright, looked pretty good, but again, he was one of the few bright spots. The Vikings had a couple linemen, including Brian O’Neill, go down during the game. The other was Schlottman, who was filling in for Bradbury at center.
The Packers did everything they could to shut down JJ, and that should have opened up opportunities for other Vikings receivers, but that didn’t happen. Kirk looked like crap. The two interceptions weren’t on him, but he looked like crap for much of the game. He failed to pull the trigger when guys were open, and that’s on him. Off game for Kirk and for the rest of the offense, to be honest. Our coaches forgot how to count to 12, by the way.
This sums it up better. I hate the Packers, and I hate that we lost to them. Dammit.
Didn’t get to watch football today. Poor son in law was here all day again (at least he was able to fix the electrical problem himself and re-do the drywall), but I had to go with my daughter to take the grands roller skating. They’re too little and both just beginners for her to handle two by herself. She had promised them they’d go during the holidays. By the time we got back from that the Vikings were on, but already down big and I read Teddy broke his finger and they lost. Then we went out for a nice dinner and I fell asleep trying to watch the late game. I recorded the games, but every team I wanted to win today lost, so will probably just delete them all.
I hate the Packers. I would have been sad to lose that game, but to take a beatdown from them, definitely won’t be watching that recording.

To think defense started with a 3 and out Metellus blocked punt ball on 1 I thought oh boy were rolling. Refs didn’t call Shelley mugging Watson. What a miserable beat down.

Didn’t say it was going to happen, but with this team we can obviously go to shit in a second. We finally have some starters injured and our depth is atrocious.
The bears have their own issues sitting at 3-13, it wouldn’t be good to end the regular season on a two-game skid to lesser divisional opponents. KOC needs to hit the playbook as the pukers knew his game plan just as well as he does.
WTF happened on that Kirk fumble? The routes were all out of sorts. I’d have to rewatch it, but looked like he was on a three step drop and the WRs were running double move deep routes?

I’ve been right all season, we just got really lucky, as in setting all time nfl records for weeks lucky. We never were competitive, we were never a top 3 team, we were basically bottom 10 to bottom 5 all season. Sure, the games were great to watch, but no one who knows football ever gave us a chance in hell of not losing. Tat’s why we were the first team in nfl history to be 10-2 and be dogs to a 5-7 team.

The game plan was a total clusterfuck, the puke crew put their best cover man on JJ and took him out of the game. Beaks never did get settled in the game, so he is part of the issue. The team got out-coached and beat in the trenches in this debacle of a game with the top seed in play.

Savage, Adrian Amos and Rudy Ford each intercepted passes by Cousins, while Kenny Clark recovered a fumble on a strip sack. The Packers converted each of Cousins’ turnovers into touchdowns.

Cousins is good enough for a GM to keep spinning the wheel, has the NOLA playoff win as his signature win as he melted in the divisional round. Jefferson, KJ, Thielen, and Hockenson helped chains this season, but there are now four bad games (playoff teams) throwing shade his way. The contract is a boat anchor on the cap, pushing cap money into void years wasn’t smart. Lynch (9ers) has more than his share of whifs, but at least he has built a strong defense and a competitive offense (run by Mr. Irrelevant) after trading a slew of picks for Lance.

Kirk is a very streaky thrower. You really should let him warm up early with some short 4-6 yard completions on the road.
Instead we seemed to force a few runs into 8 man boxes and then have Kirk throw long developing pass plays. Hell, even when we needed just 3 yards we went long. It worked a few times, but its not a sustainable game plan IMO.
As GF pointed out, a lot of the plays seemed pretty basic.
Lots of runs between the tackles.
KOC also wanted to use JJ, JJ and/AT to clear out the middle of the field for Hock. It worked for a while, but he called that same play or a variation of it so much that the Packers were jumping the route.
Lots of issues for this game, but KOC is not a great play caller IMO.
