Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

I have been insulted.

Ok Ben, read the Myth series by Robert Asprin. Very funny fantasy series.
If you like some horror or light horror, try any of Robert McCammon’s works pre-2000 ish. One of my favorites is the epic Swan Song.
A series I just recently discovered is the Atlantis series by Thomas Greanias. I have read the first two of the trilogy and have enjoyed them.
If you enjoy the old pulp books, there is an author that is an expert on that type of book and has written some new Tarzan, Doc Savage and Sherlock Holmes stories (he was authorized by the respective copyright holders). His name is Will Murray. Some of his works are a little spotty, however he mostly does a great job. He also ghost wrote some of the Destroyer series.
If your taste are more towards literature, you should check out The Library of America. They have an extensive library of American authors with a wide range of subjects. I have collected a lot of those. One of the series that I particularly enjoyed was American Sermons: The Pilgrims to Martin Luther King Jr. They have authors from Twain to Lovecraft to Hammett to Poe to Longfellow (a whole collection of poems which is rather interesting) to Hemingway and a ton more.
If you are in to more collectible books, try the Folio Society out of London. They have all of the Ian Fleming Bond books bound in cloth and encased in a slipcase. They have a reward winning artist that illustrated the books with some striking images.

That’s probably enough to get you started.

Since you are probably not around this late, I will copy and paste this to tomorrow if I have time.

OK, for folks who think Cousins has nowhere to go next year, I submit the following.

Baker Mayfield is a free agent after this year. Tampa has $48M in cap space in 2024.

Cousins or Mayfield?

I keep hearing that Cousins is really bad and that he is incapable of taking any team on a deep run into the playoffs.
All that being true Mayfield must be a better choice.

The people that would want Mayfield would want him as bridge QB for the Rookie stud to sit behind. No one would want Baker as a long term answer. Dont twist these things. Also Cousins IS incapable of a deep play off run, has been for a decade + and thats not changing.

Why would Tampa pay $45 million to Cousins when Mayfield would cost $35 million ish or less? Mayfield would also probably be flexible in year 2 or 3, whereas Cousins has never been flexible on that.

Is Cousins better? Yep. But that doesn’t mean teams will fork over that type of money given Cousins known 10 year career.

Nope, we had our chance. I know people commend the Wilfs for “saving” the Vikes and keeping them in MN, but they’ve done jack squat when it comes to running the show properly, getting a legit generational QB and fielding a SB team. They like the occasional “big” signing / trade to generate hype but outside of that dont know when to call their plan a failure and adapt. Are also too hands on as owners.

I agree – but still glad they kept them in Minny. I was terrified they’d move the team. Don’t think I could’ve/would’ve followed. I love football too much to not follow so I had every intent on picking a new team but I had only one criteria: New team also would have zero Lombardi’s – would feel like a total bandwagon fan (something I detest and get a heavy dose of in NE). Had my choices narrowed down to Buffalo & Detroit. Thankfully it didn’t happen, but I agree. I want results too.

I know its not Tuesday, so I apologize, but near the end of this thread the talk of Cousins contract came up.

I found a source that is suggesting 2 years at 40 million per year guaranteed is his market value and likely what the Vikings will pay.

My question is….since we “owe” him 28 million already for next year, does this basically become a 2 year 108 million dollar deal equaling 54 million per year in cap hit?

Of course they will likely “Kick the can down the road” and end up with owing him some after year 2.

bowbunch
bowbunch
Reply to  NoDakRube
3 January 2024 12:57 pm

Any new money will be added to the 28 mill cap hit remaining from void years. If they don’t extend him, it all hits the cap this year. If they extend him there is a $14 mill hit in ’24 and the same in ’25 plus whatever the new contract is. If they were to give him a 2 year deal and add a void year or 2, the cap savings would depend on how much of the new contract is signing bonus compared to roster bonus, incentives, salary, etc. They would not owe him money after the contract, just have to “pay” the cap.

So I don’t know if this is some new thing or if they are just f’ing with me but Delta has sent at least a dozen emails over the last five months regarding schedule change for our upcoming trip to Hawaii. Every time I look I see no significant change, maybe the departure time or arrival time has changed by one minute. Somehow knowing that my flight to SLC will arrive at 0632 instead of 0633 is deemed important. I keep waiting to open the app and find the departure date has changed by two days.

Comment below about White House made me think of something.
Season is about over and all the drafts, QB’s of future, Cap stuff will be discussed to no end – may even get a little redundant.
But 2024 is going to be a huge year for an even bigger game – who is going to be the “QB of our country.”
I’d submit we are never going to see a “game” like this in our life times. We already have one “player” under four indictments and removed from ballot in two states. Another “player” is being investigated for impeachment and a cabinet member is now under impeachment hearings.
All of this, and the game hasn’t even started. This will be one for the ages!
Perhaps as events fold out, Mods may let us discuss “current events” a little bit. It’s going to be a hell of a “game.”

It’s an absolute shit show. Both sides are an absolute mess and both sides have no one to blame but themselves. Dems literally rigged their primaries to keep the tried and true old dusty ruffle Kilary as their nominee before, and then they pushed like the dickens to make sure sleepy Joe was their nominee last time.

Republicans… man Trump is the perfect representative culmination of the perfect FOX News selfish monster.

The difference I think is it’s the Democratic party that pushed for the garbage puppets not as much the people. Where the Republicans, it was more the people bought into Trump hook line and sinker rather than the establishment. Either way there is no options like the Vikings have with Kirk Cousins. We basically get to choose between Tavaris Jackson or Ponder lol.

Wife’s birthday on 2/16

5 years ago a friend of ours threw a ‘Murder Mystery’ party. Set in a 1919 North Chicago speakeasy. Everyone had roles – victims and killer marked in the bios with various character details. End of the night 3 people were nominated as the killer, then a vote (they were wrong, real killer got away with it). Lots of booze and appetizers – great time, and the wife had a blast.

So I’m writing an original one for her birthday.

Looking at a cast of 9-12 people. Need to determine a setting, victim(s), killer and character bios. Not sure if I’ll use present-day or try to go back in time like the first one. My original idea was to write it as a bunch of random Americans holed up in the US Embassy in Havana in February of 1959 – but that’s likely just a starting point.

Gonna brew up another pot of unleaded and fire up the bong and get crackin’…

Skol!

I have a proposed rule change for the NBA…I have heard NBA insiders say the refs need to do a better job of not getting the STARS in foul trouble since that is who the fans are paying money to see.

That is of course complete BS. The better solution would be that you eliminate the 6 fouls and you are out rule. Instead, each time a player gets a foul after his 6th its a one shot technical. it would work, it would be fair, don’t know why they haven’t done it yet.

She decided we needed to throw a Holiday party tonight.
About 6 different couples/with kids and us.

Its really not my thing. I enjoy socializing with our friends one on one but to bring a group together where our friends are not all friends with each other is awkward to me. Especially since as host I will have to try and make everyone feel welcome and part of the group.

The secret is to work harder on your vacation than you do at work. That way you are always happy to return to work.

The convo yesterday about broken condoms and Mjolnir’s regrets stated below reminded me of my fiendish past and that if there is a hell I am sure to be a charter member. MT anecdote to follow:

My third year of college there was a guy on my dorm floor named Howie. He was an odd duck from Grande Prairie and had some distinct speech patterns and diction that made him easy to impersonate. Both my friend Doug and I could do a pretty good impression. It helped that he was kind of an arrogant dink.

So he was dating a non-university gal he knew from Grande Prairie, she worked and lived downtown. One day in October she came off the elevator with a stormy disposition and he guiltily jumped up from the couch where we were huddled around the radio listening to the Jack Benny show. We could tell there was discord in the air.

Months later there was a story about a (dead) baby found wrapped in a garbage bag in a dumpster outside an apartment downtown. It wasn’t even the biggest story of the day, I believe Mike Krushelnyski had been downgraded to a will not play for two weeks; more of a pressing issue to the Edmonton public at the time. A short time later two cops showed up on the floor and asked where Howie’s room was. Two and two put together and it was the gf that disposed of the baby.

A dozen of us are hanging out next night in Doug’s room and we started doing a disgusting impersonation, “heh heh heh let me the f out of this garbage bag, ya bunch of stupid dinks heh heh heh”. Howie walks in, clearly pissed, and asks what we’re talking about. Awkward. Last I heard he flunked out spring semester.

So Howie, if you are out there, I apologize for my lack of compassion. That would have sucked.

So that is what happened to PPB. I had no idea. He always seemed a pretty congenial Vikings fan. He was fun to talk religion subjects with, too.

Plus, he had a great sub-nickname from Five. Peter Plays Skinflute, I think it was…

’Those Guys Have All The Fun’ Inside The World Of ESPN

’Live From New York’

: both written by James Andrew Miller & Tom Shales, both anthologies and they’re fantastic.

’The System’ The Glory and Scandal of Big Time College Football – Jeff Benedict & Armen Keteyian

’Jarhead’ – Anthony Swofford (I’m sure you’ve read this being a Marine, but if you haven’t, you should)

The Oilers throat punched the Flyers last night. After a disastrous 2-5-1 start they are now 19-15-1 and slowly climbing the standings, still a few points back of the top 3 in the Pacific. I know you wanted that update of meaningless things.

Step one: Kirk is back. It is the Wilf way.
Step two: Bring in Chris Streveler to shore up the backup QB room.
Step three: Draft a safety
Step four: Profit

If Kirk says no, move up to draft a QB this year.

Ah sooo… well to answer your question, I think KAM will go after Russell Wilson, but what I want them to do is bring in Ryan Tannehill or (dare I say it?) Teddy Bridgewater, then look at someone in the draft who did well on the S2 Cognition test, has an accurate arm, and is at least 6’3″.

Three things are great about Pizza Ranch

  1. They will make whatever pizza you want and bring it to your table (Pepperoni/Green olive please)
  2. Root beer floats. People mess that up all the time and just put soft serve in the bowls. Proper thing is to start with a root beer float while you decide what pizza to order that is not at the buffet.
  3. Aaron Rogers will never show up while you are eating.

Now that he’s left cheese land, I think I’d rather have a beer with him than Kirk. Kirk would be sitting there drinking a glass of skim milk anyway or maybe a Whiteclaw if he was getting crazy. Rodgers would have something crazy but I think the conversation would be more interesting.

There is a LOT in his history to indicate that is true. He has offered team friendly terms (below market value contracts) to both the Redskins and the Vikings. The Jets offered him more money than the Vikings did for example.

I’d rather see a lower salary in year 1 though I think and have bigger incentives. If you do it with incentives, especially in year 2, you could build the incentives that some of them wouldn’t hit the cap until 2026, if at all.

This was posted on December 27th by someone who thinks they know stuff..

“Cousins limps into free agency as the most experienced, productive QB set to become available. The 35-year-old carries a $40M valuation into the offseason, likely seeking his [fourth] consecutive fully-guaranteed contract,” Ginnitti wrote. “Minnesota never lets Cousins hit the open market, agreeing to a two-year, $80 million, fully-guaranteed contract extension with their QB1, and under-contract Nick Mullens remains as the QB2.”

No longer New Vikings Fan

That is never going to happen. KAM isn’t signing Cousins to any contract he can’t get out of, and Cousins isn’t signing any contract that gives the GM control over his future (no trade clause and lots of guaranteed money). The two sides will never come to terms.
