POSTING THIS AGAIN, JOE MAUER IS A FIRST BALLOT HALL OF FAMER AS HE DAMN well SHOULD BE

He was by far the best catcher of his generation and the best hitting catcher in the history of MLB. Oh, I forgot, he’s also Minnesota bred and born. He’s the best athlete to come out of Minnesota in the state’s history. I remember watching this game live and being moved emotionally at this moment. Image how amazing the moment was for Matt Belisle to throw the last pitch caught by a first ballot HOF catcher. Joe Mauer is the best catcher in history.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Well, the last two head coach openings are the Seahawks and Commanders. Pundits are saying neither team is expected to hire anyone until next week, after the conference championship games are done. Don’t see Belichick in the mix for either of those teams, truthfully. Might be a TV guy next season.

Maybe when a team needs a both HC and a GM then BB will be in the mix.

I made a comment earlier about hitting iron shots and divots. I was very unclear.
There’s practice and play.. When playing I always take a divot from 6 iron down.
I noted maybe the greatest iron player ever, JN, virtually took no divot with any iron as his swing was so pure.
So practicing hitting irons by just brushing the grass requires a near perfect swing and will improve ball club face contact. Try hitting an 8 iron out of a bunker an d you will get the idea.
Now when you play, and you need to practice this too, you learn to shallow out your swing in front of the ball by proper weight shift. But proper weight shift is wasted without pure ball contact.
Pros already have pure ball contact so their practice routines are different.

Falcons also committing to being mid for the foreseeable future. Nothing like going back to your ex after a shitty break up right? Kirk to ATL steam is gone, big bummer. Oh well, lets reunite him with Washington, all the things that pushed him away are gone, and there’s no place like home. Right Kirk? RIGHT?!

Man some of this is crazy. Isn’t Morris a DC? If I’m an owner, thinking BB may know about defense than him. But maybe a lot of internal control stuff.
Heard one guy say everyone knows BB can coach, he was interviewing ownership.

Everyone knows Caleb Williams (USC), Drake Maye (North Carolina), Jayden Daniels (LSU), Michael Penix Jr. (Washington), J.J. McCarthy (Michigan), and Bo Nix (Oregon) are expected to go off the board in Round 1 of the upcoming NFL draft. I haven’t watched much college football this year, as each year I seem less interested in football in general, but college ball is especially waning. I remember watching Andrew Luck and RGIII in college though, and I knew Luck would do well in the NFL, but I honestly never thought Griffin would. So, within this group of players, who looks like a true pro football prospect, and who looks like a great college level football player?

Damn this QB discussions are exhausting ( QB 1).
A question that doesn’t make sense to me.
I’ve been a fan of sports. now for over 65 years. Talked sports with all kinds of people, all kinds of teams.
But I really can’t recall anything quite like this cousins love/hate.
The love I kind of understand. As a kid I loved Ernie Banks and he could do no wrong. Seems a lot of folks love their team’s players.
Now, the hate. I get frustrated and pissed at some of our guys, but generally kind of ‘love’ them all as they are our guys. Now, when we play Packers, sort of hate Rogers that day – but generally respect him as a player.
But this Cousins hate. Man, the ends people will go to to shit on him – just hard to believe.

I think most of us can see/agree that KC has his strengths and weaknesses but he can’t do it alone. I think he did his part well enough but he does have a slice of the blame pie. How big a slice is the point of the entire argument.

But his time here is up, and is long over due as a QB of our favorite team the writing is on the wall. I dislike and tire of the discussion as well but the ends people will go to to DEFEND him are more astounding imo. Especially if you truly want the Vikings to get to a super bowl before you die. The fans that are a fan of literal insanity doing the same thing over and over, yeah, Im done with that attitude and mentality, not sure if hate is the wort, loathe? Pick one. You get it.

His time may be up or it may not be – not my call. But al least until next March, he is a Viking and like all the players I support them.
Now, want to have a discussion why he throws better rolling to his left than right, let’s go. Or why he’s more accurate on play action – fine.
But why does anyone go out of their way to trash him or any other player for that matter.
Everyone wants to win and in fact there have been several thoughtful discussions just this week how to construct the team to do so – and no player got trashed.
and since I’m a hell of a lot closer to dieing than you, I feel more of an urgency than you.

According to Ian Rappaport, “sources” say the Panthers are closing in on a deal to hire Bucs OC Dave Canales as their new head coach. A first-time coordinator, his work in Tampa this year — especially with Baker Mayfield — stood out.

On to Bryce Young.

He was the 9th best passer this year in raw stats and according to the poster above that is “near the top” and “league leading” and is worth $40+ mil a year and is irreplaceable. So…why shouldn’t it get him a HC job?

Mayfield had a 94.6 passer rating which is in the “good” range. Look at Brock Purdy above him though. He had fewer pass attempts, but had more yards, more TD’s, and fewer interceptions.

Once again you fail KFEY. Stay on the porch.

I wasn’t disagreeing with you…

Mobile QB’s develop that skill because they aren’t as good at reading defenses, going through progressions, and delivering the ball. Favre was honest about it. He said “People thought I was running QB when I came out. I ran, because I didn’t know what I was doing”.

It is a lot easier to run, than play QB from the pocket.

I think that’s salient context. It’s kind of amazing how productive Cousins has been behind shit lines, and a different OC every year. This year, in a second year in an offense, he was leading the league in passing TD’s and on his way to 5,000 yards before he got hurt. Brady had three OC’s in 20 years with the Patriots.

What if the O-line play has been in part because of Kirk? Moving in the pocket, rolling out, setting the proper protection at the line all make the o-line look better. I’m not saying the o-line would be all world with anybody else, but you can’t tell me that he has just been unlucky enough to have the worst o-line ever for 10 years, even with All Pro or at least Pro Bowl level talent like Darrisaw while not at least wondering if maybe that common piece behind the center has at least a little to do with it. Burrow had a much worse o-line his second year in the league and went to the Super Bowl.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  bowbunch
25 January 2024 2:27 pm

I actually can tell you that, and it’s been true except for 2016. Cousins is easy to pass protect for, because the O-line always knows, on every play, where he’ll be. Ask any O-lineman in the league. They prefer a pocket passer, it makes their job a lot easier. Remember, the QB is behind them. They can’t see what he’s doing.

This commentary came to the fore in Washington, when the Redskins drafted Griffin. The pundits all said he would instantly make the line a lot better because of his mobility. He didn’t though, because he was never where he was supposed to be, and the line couldn’t protect him. Some things you read are a myth.

With some “mobile” QBs, I agree the scrambling can be detrimental, especially if they like to escape out the back because that is typically where a tackle tries to push the edge rusher. Through week 5, Cousins was well above average in time to throw though. We already argued how much of that was Kirk and how much is the scheme and I don’t have time to look at previous years, but if I remember when things calm down, maybe I will. The main thing is I don’t think you can just say the o-line sucks and has always sucked and it’s not his fault carte blanche unless you have some analytics to back that up. Especially when other guys have played behind worse o-lines and had more success. I think Kirk is very good at processing what the defense is doing pre-snap which makes the play work when he gets it right 90% or more of the time. When he gets it wrong is when you see the “Beaker” moments.

No QB I have ever seen has played behind worse lines than Cousins and done better Bow… I just haven’t…

At one time Cousins had the second best career pass completion percentage rate in NFL history. Career passing records have a qualifying passes attempted standard, and I don’t know what that is, but I read that behind Drew Brees, Cousins was second at one time. That’s amazing considering the terrible lines he’s played behind. Also, are you going to sit there and tell me the Vikings O-line has been anything but terrible the last decade or so?

Growing pains Kathy. Lawrence had a rough first year, so did Aikman by the way. It’s not always the first horse out of the gate that wins the race.

Young will probably have to learn a new system next year, which is hard on any QB, but especially a “young” one. I think he might be OK though.

Aikman’s first 3 years were rough. His career high in TD passes was 23 (came in his 4th year as a starter) career high in yards that year as well (just under 3500) crazy to think he’s in the HoF with only 165 career TD passes. Those Dallas teams in the early 90’s were incredibly well rounded.

I did – not saying he wasn’t deserving, just think the numbers are wild. Aikman a HoFer with 165 – and he’s 80th on the list. He’s totally a HoFer, even with elite offensive lines and talent all around him. That may be the difference. Jameis Winston is only 24 TD passes behind him – theoretically could pass him if he ever gets another shot as a starter. Carson Wentz is only 12 behind him. Wentz and Winston don’t belong in the same breath as Aikman regarding QB play. The year Aikman threw 23 TD’s the leader was Steve Young with 25 – half of what Mahomes put up in his first year as a starter. Crazy numbers.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  benjammin
25 January 2024 3:32 pm

I think that’s salient, but even compared to his peers he wasn’t especially great. Between 1989 and 2000 (Aikman’s career period) he was 13th in passing yards per game. That’s very middle of the pack. That said he was second in pass completion percentage at 61.5% (Steve Young was the highest at 66.4%) He was 8th in TD production with 165 TD’s, but Favre threw 255 TD’s in the same period. That’s a massive disparity. Aikman also had the 5th most interceptions during his career period. Finally, he had the 11th best passer rating. So during his career, he wasn’t near the “best of the best” or historic. He was just part of a team that won the Super Bowl three times.

Back on the course, adjust ball placement and weight, and take a divot.

The best drill I found that improved my mid iron play was to get some foot powder, spray a line and then without a ball just take practice swings and try to take a divot without touching the line. Now when I hit an iron shot, I don’t even focus on the ball. I look about half a ball in front of the golf ball. Consistency has been greatly improved and I have only golfed a couple of times a year the last couple of years because of camping and the gremlins at home.

One thing I did wrong for a long time was put the ball farther back in my stance in an attempt to hit down on it, and of course hit the ball first, then the ground. However, I kept striking the ground behind the ball and duffing it a lot. Eventually I realized that the farther back I put the ball, the less I shifted my weight to my front foot and turned into my left side, coming down. Once I moved the ball off my left heel, I started hitting the ball in the center of the face and bottoming out in front of the ball.

Every pro I watch in every tournament takes a divot every single time. It’s where the divot comes from.
If it comes from the behind the ball, it’s a bad shot.

The pro’s divot comes from in front of the ball.

Heard some folks on TV made me think more about the Harbaugh question. Most of this is also just memory, so maybe off some.
When H was in SF he had a. top 10 defense 4 times and never a top 10 offense.
Remember he inherited a world class LB group (Willis, Navarro, Smith) and it became a fierce defense.
He had Alex Smith, took him to next level and they became a playoff team. Smith got hurt, went to Kap and stayed with him – got to SB.
Defenses got on to Kap’s limitations, lots of injuries to defense (believe willis had to retire) and things went down hill after that.
Thinking about that, and my limited looks at Michigan, seems his style of ball is a little like Zim ball on steroids with probably better QB relationships.
For us, at the time, not sure he would have been. the. right move.
Just a thought.

I rarely watch college ball, all I know is this year Michigan ran the ball a shit ton and had a good defense. Its this an abortion or is this the type of ball Harbaugh was running his whole time at Michigan? Or was it variable year to year based on the player he had available? You cant run a NFL team and roster like a college team imo so, not sure if he would employee the same philosophy. Will be curious what he does in LA.

I got an email reminding me it is the weekend of the annual cribbage tournament.

I had forgotten all about it.

Must be memory repression after last year’s argument with an old man. I’ve never been that disrespectful to an old person, but man, that guy was an asshat.

I think even if I learned he won a medal in WWII, I still would have labeled him an asshat. Every game I ever played at that tournament over multiple years counted a 31 with last card as three points: two points for the 31 and one point for last card.

Apparently, it is only two points in that scenario, though. You don’t get a last card point on 31. However, if you hit a 15 with last card, then you get three points. The game gets confusing in that regard.

So, he was right, but instead of just explaining it, he labeled me as a cheater trying to pull a fast one on him. I’m like, “I have enough going on in my life where I don’t need to cheat on my seventh game of cribbage in a tournament where I am already out of the running for making the winner’s bracket…”

In his mind, I did need to cheat, though. I needed to cheat very much…

Oh well, I guess when a person gets to Harrison Smith’s age, they can turn onery.

So many details in that game are important ie Nops. Especially when the games are tight, 1 pt can be the difference.
Do you play in that tournament that if the dealer gives you the deck to cut you can keep the deck and take the deal/crip that hand?
That is the way I learned it but have met several persons who never heard of it.

Wrenage

I have never heard of that rule either, so no, that tournament doesn’t play that way.

Losing a game in the first eight hands is not the end of the world. It is how much you lose by that counts.

Basically, everyone comes to the tournament and plays eight hands. The organizer then takes the eight players with the highest point total and puts them in a winner’s bracket to play for the prize…which is a cribbage board and 50 chamber of commerce dollars.

So, in eight games you have the potential to score 968 points. Usually about 50 people are playing, so there is very little margin for error. If you end up with a total score of even 943, you aren’t making the winner’s bracket. That means one skunk, and you are out of the money, so there is a lot of luck involved. You basically have to have good luck for eight straight hands, which is difficult.

It really comes down to luck because most everyone there is at a similar skill level. One year I played against a 12-year-old kid. It was his first time at the tournament. Dude skunked me first game, and there was nothing I could do about it. He kept drawing double runs. I kept getting hands like, 2, 4, 6, 8, Q…

I am a casual cribbage player and only recently discovered (by reading the actual rules) that I have been pegging incorrectly (juvenile jokes to follow) my whole life.

Myself, and the people I generally play with, would peg for double runs while playing out. So a sequence of 8 7 7 6, we would score 8 for the person who played the 6…

Of course the real score in that situation is 0. Oh, and we also took 3 for 31 and last…

Yeah, it is quite common to come across scoring quirks once one goes outside their common opponents. I *think* I have the scoring rules down at this point, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Of the hundred hands I have played in that tournament, every opponent and myself always took three for 31 and last. I will continue to play it that way. I’m not going to take time to try to explain the official rule and pull out a rule book every time it comes up in that tournament.

But if I play that old guy again, I will play it his way. That’s fair.

The first year I played in that tournament, there was like 75 people there, and there were three perfect hands. Whenever one happened, everyone cheered. They took a picture. Since then, a perfect hand hasn’t happened.

Lots of memories that first year. The crowd is basically all age groups: kids, teenagers, middle-aged, senior citizens. This one guy had a super deep baritone voice. Whenever he spoke, you could hear him over the entire room.

At one point in the tournament, all of a sudden, you hear his deep voice boom out, “I can’t believe I lost by FORTY @#&%ING POINTS!” The whole room goes dead silent. Grandmothers are scowling. Kids are googly-eyed…

Another time, a guy dropped 60+ points on me over two hands. Just buried me. Double-double runs everywhere, hit me with a four-of-a-kind pegger, etc.

Once Jeb Bush even stuck his head in the room because he was in the area for the Iowa caucuses. It’s the place to be!

I have played a lot of crib and only once have I ever had (or someone else I am playing) a chance at a 29 hand.

That is quite the statistical aberration having three in a series of games played by 75 people. Were the cards bent?

I almost got the perfect hand in in the first week I started playing.

I had three fives and a Jack in hand, and the last five came up in the flop, but it didn’t nob my Jack because it wasn’t the same suit.

That was more than ten years ago, and I haven’t come close since.

These are just kwerks bulk passing yard stats. In a league of 32 teams and QBs. Being right at 10 is good, far from great. Not amongst the best, outside of the best, amongst the good. If you go off off passing SCORING offense, these numbers get worse, not better. If you want to talk about failing to accept reality, please check your numbers.

Oh wait, you cant. And even so the only stat that matters is scoring. And passing scoring offense is all that matters but just for the hell of it, lets to total offensive TDs scored per game. Again, I have the real numbers, you have smoke coming from your ass. 2022: 8th, 2021: 12th, 2020: 9th, 2019: 7th (we had a running game), 2018: 19th. Offense was no where near top 3 or even top 5 in any scoring category including passing. Again, I back up my talk. You cant. I think your dementia is kicking in, you don’t even have a porch. 28.d mil dead cap if not on roster, correct? Won’t mind signing him but drafting one also. Still our best chance i’d say but he’ll prob bail.

Personally, if I were the GM, I would probably move on, and simply admit to the fans that Cousins would be too much of a fiscal burden. Yes, the team is going to be far less competitive without Cousins. Absolutely. But the Vikings can become one of the healthiest teams fiscally in 2025, by letting the big contract guys walk this coming year.

Yes, after 2024. I’m just in the tear it up rebuild mode. Against my nature. Besides, we won’t have a kirko’s Tuesday to talk about.

Anyone who thinks Kirk Cousins is the “bad” part of this team is bonkers.

Cousins already offered a deal to retire a Viking for less money. KAM rejected it. Try and keep up with reality. Posting what Peter King thinks is just blather. He is just like all the other sports pundits who push out stuff they know nothing about.

Really?
What were the specifics of that deal?

There arent any, it was BS coming from Kirks agent and NLNVF bought it hook line and sinker because 8 is never wrong

Mostly yes.
Add to the fact that Kirk is still talking about retiring a Viking and claiming money isn’t the issue as of about two weeks ago.

You once again are completely misrepresenting the truth here DE. Everyone has read what Cousins said.

Krammer added that Cousins was willing to take a discount despite an inflated quarterback market that saw New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones garner a deal worth over $40 million a year.

“I had also heard that he wasn’t asking for $40 [million],” Krammer added. “He wasn’t asking for that much, in terms of what Daniel Jones got, who is obviously much younger but much less accomplished. Cousins’ camp was kind of surprised I guess, from what I heard, at the Vikings not jumping or at least accepting what they were asking for.”

That was in the offseason.

Why does Kirk keep talking about retiring a Viking and money isn’t the issue in 2024?

He hasn’t said any such thing. He SAID it isn’t as much about the dollars, as it is the structure.

This is completely plain language you misrepresent over, and over, and over.

It has to be with ‘intent.’
Do I like beer – yes.
Do i drink beer every night – no.
Do I like steak, do I eat steak every night – no.
Do I want to retire a Viking – yes.
Will I be able to – maybe, maybe not.

Yes. Cousins wanted to remain a Redskin and Bruce Allen, (like KAM) refused to give him a no trade clause and the guaranteed money that would ensure Cousins stayed there. Some folks refuse to accept plain language.

Harbaugh to the Chargers is pretty cool. Herbert just got 42 percent more dreamy.

If Harbaugh came to the Vikings, we would now be in year two of our ascendency to relevancy (his first season would have been used to start turning the ocean liner around). The upcoming season would look bright.

But, hey…the current state of things is almost as good!

Yep.
Watch Harbaugh coach the Chargers to a super bowl within two years.

Same.
First year coaches will have some obstacles that make it hard to make a superb owl run in year 1. But it wouldn’t shock me.

They have Herbert so even if they do it does not mean the Vikings would have been anywhere close.

I agree.
But everywhere Harbaugh has coached, he made them much better.
Not sure how long it would have taken, but I think Harbaugh would have had the Vikings at least in the playoffs in back to back years.

If the Vikings had hired Harbaugh, the team would have finally won a super bowl.
Now we get to watch Herbert and the Chargers win one before the Vikings even lose in another NFCCG

Yup, this is how I see this play out. Chargers will get really good with Harbaugh while Queasy effs up draft after draft and KOC buys moar insence sticks for the locker room until they eventually get fired. And the Wilfs keep on laughing all the way to the bank.

Good morning, SKOL! FTP & FT*

I has a sad that the Chargers hired Harbaugh, IMHO the Vikes effed up that situation, and now we are stuck with Kumbaya Kev. Well, nothing can be done about that now.

Also, FIRST!
