NFL News

The Super Bowl odds moved overnight from the 49ers -2.5 to the 49ers -1. Seems the money is coming in on the Chiefs.

VIKINGS QUESTION OF THE DAY

The vast majority of players wait until after the Super Bowl to announce their retirement (at least those with class). We all know that Harrison Smith has class, but will he be among those retiring this offseason? For some reason I feel like the answer is yes for the future HOFer, same for Jason Kelce.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

They spend awhile ‘down-tread’ talking about a bunch of actors/movies I had never heard of.
I didn’t even bother to pay attention to it.

All the speculation about FAs/Draft/Cuts gets old. I will comment if something actually happens.

I believe that they were looking to get as far away from the Zim culture as possible.
KOC is the opposite of Zim and Harbaugh was somewhere in the middle.
Plus Harbaugh thinking it was basically a done deal and not an actual interview sealed the deal.

Yeah, I get that, but to me, having a “players” coach or a “hard ass” coach isn’t really germaine to the issue. Regardless of personality, it’s who is the guy available who can get the job done? Harbaugh knows how to coach an NFL team. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. Rookie GM and rookie HC, make rookie mistakes. People want to give them 5 years to learn how to succeed in the NFL. Bullshit. bring in a proven product… get the job done right the first time.

Imagine being the owner. You had just fired a hard ass defensive minded, physical run the ball type coach. Had just had a meeting with all the team leaders and took their input of problems. And at that time, given Harbaugh’s coaching style and reputation, could understand their thinking for pass.
Now five years, that’s another matter.

They are media members and actually get to talk to coaches and players as well as have access to locker rooms after games, so they are more connected and have just as valid if not more opinions than us imo. They also want a SB before they die and are ready to move on Kirk so, thats top tier status as well.

Correct. There are some rather nice places in the country to retire to. Right here in Florida it seems everyone likes to come and visit. Some build vacation homes around here. A lot of folks come down and play golf in the off season.
Outside of football, there’s even baseball teams come down and practice before the season – players everywhere. I’m sort of lucky, get to work out in this pretty nice facility, and over the last year have gotten tp work out with the Knicks. Celtics, Lakers and Suns.
Real Mardid was there but I didn’t really know them at the time.
So with out prying or being to outward, it’s not too hard to meet and talk to folks.

First, I don’t know if that guy knows anything more than any of us.
and I’m not arguing about better rosters And October games either.
I still think the concussion stuff was cover.
Still it doesn’t matter so much who won the game, or the Chiefs game either. It’s that we could play compeititve football against the best teams in the league. If you’re competitive, you may or may win on any particular day.
Last year we could not do that.
The most, by a very long way, impressive thing about the Niner game to me was that our offensive line played outstanding against one of the best defensive fronts in football.
Given that, it showed we could play football against the best defenses in football.

Chiefs while be the best defense in football this season when its said and done. And the 49ers secondary is complete ass, they lost 3 games pretty poorly including our in October when they were in a rough patch, then they got their shit together, if we played them a month after we did we get out shit knocked in. When my son was younger, he played in a great state basketball tournament every year. They got to play at the Target center for the 5 state championship. Every year they would give out 3 Lynx tickets for the game that played that night following the tournament. His last year we decided to stay back and go to the game.

As the fans started pouring in, I realized that they don’t even open up the second level. I looked around and said to my son, this league will never grow to the heights of the NBA. Mostly because there will never be second generation fans. The small group I was with may have been the only heterosexuals there that night.

There are a number of top shelf defensive free agents this year the Vikings might could acquire.

Chris Jones (DT Chiefs)
Josh Allen (Edge, Jaguars)
Justin Madubuike (DT, Ravens)
Christian Wilkins (DT, Dolphins)
Brian Burns (Edge, Panthers)

Put those 5 guys out there, and you’re going to be stout up front.

Of course they might eat up the entire salary cap by themselves, but the cap is a myth, right?

In high school we ran a 5-2 Monster Defense. My high school coach, Warren Washburn actually wrote a book on the 5-2 – was required reading for all football players. 5-2 is a lineup that features a NT, 2 DT (basically 3-techs) and 2 DE. 2 LB’s 2 CB’s and 1 SS or MonsterBack.

The 5 guys you’ve listed above would be the ultimate DLine in the 5-2….

Edgecrusher71
Reply to  Mjolnir

I like the 5-2 at the HS level. You can run a lot of cover 3 behind it. I liked that look where there were 3 down linemen, two outside stand up edge guys 2 LBs but that monster back/best tackling safety or LB/Safety Hybrid, is at LB depth. But only send 4 of the guys on the line in the base package. Whichever side you send, that side’s LB or Monster replaces them in coverage responsibilities.

I played for a coach in HS that had played for Duffy Dougherty at Michigan State when they tied for National Title. He used the 5-2 Perhaps different, a lot like todays 3-4 as the standup DE’s were a lot like the position Hunter plays. And, since there was less passing then, one of the safeties was a Monsterback. Believe at the. time there was a guy George Webster was the monster for MS and a great football player.

5-2 was super popular in Nebraska (and obviously other places in the Midwest) because it proved to be very formidable against the run and against option-based offenses (The Maryland I in particular) and pass-first offenses were virtually unheard of down here until the late 80’s and even then they were very little.

Tomorrow, there will be 6 weeks to the start of the NFL 2024 season. The Vikings will probably make it known sooner, but in no less than 42 days we’ll know for certain what KAM intends to do with several players on the roster (Hunter, H. Smith, Cousins, and maybe JJ).

“I told those guys, this may have been our only shot,” Campbell said to reporters. “Do I think that? No. … However, I know how hard it is to get here. I’m well aware. And it’s gonna be twice as hard to get back to this point next year than it was this year.”

I remember thinking in 1998 that we would be in the Super Bowl in short order, so, yeah, it’s tough. Instead, we got 41-0. Man, that was a silly score. Torn up by Kerry Collins. As the Vikings continue their transition to a new team in 2024 under KAM’s leadership, we can only hope his 3rd draft is a lot damn better than his first two, and whoever he brings in as a free agent doesn’t end up like Davenport.

We need:

A quarterbackA difference maker on the D-lineA difference maker at linebackerTwo difference makers on the edge’sTwo CB’s who can cover AND tackle

“New team in 2024” – do we really need one or need to fil some holes.
After watching both of our games against Detroit and the game last weekend, is there that ‘big’ a gap?
If we played them tomorrow, with both teams fully healthy, who wins.

There is a very big gap. Division rivals know each other well, and that very often leads to close games.

Talent gap is real.

I sort of believe in the talent issue to a point. Tom Brady used to say he has played in plenty of games with the less talented team and won. And also the vise versa. Detroit runs better than us but our passing game is far better than theirs. Neither defense is going to win any awards.
We played three of the four championship teams this year and held our own.
Last year we couldn’t have done that.
We have holes but so does everyone. Give me a stud center and a stud interior defensive lineman and I’ll bet that will make a big difference on both sides of the ball.

Maybe some. But think when we’re fully healthy, our passing attack is a load for any team – and that’s without a running game and a screen game,. Pickup a stud IOL would help.
Defense needs help. Keep Hunter, get him some help up front. and second year with Flores, see what happens.

Yes, yes it is. The scores of past games this season do not change the lack of talent and depth along the entire defense at all positions, as well as starters and depth at OL, RB, and now fill in TE until Hock is back. The gap is huge and we are not one or two or a healthy Kirk away from getting to a SB. If we played any of the teams that played last Sunday tomorrow..we lose. Come on Rob. Lets stop living in lala coulda shoulda woulda maybe land and call a spade a spade.

We lost several early games because of all the senseless turnovers. And no team in the league regardless of talent level, is going to overcome doing that. And then playing without you QB1 and the best WR in football will effect your level of play. We aren’t Cleveland with a running game and a defense.
