Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Following up on my earlier post concerning the end of mankind.
Per Fox News.

The threat appears to be related to the Ruskies and space…so I am assuming it has something to do with them having the capabilities to shoot down our satellites, but don’t know for sure…

“The Threat is not immanent”

This mass shooting stuff is. …….. certainly more than outrageous. And I. don’t think gun control and mental health programs are going to stop it.
A remedy – and this is probably hard ass and even cruel.
People who perform these acts should be killed (executed) publicllly in very harsh ways – you name it. But anyone else watching that wants to try something like this, fully knows what they can expect to get. No 15 years court cases and appeals, Quick, painful, and public executions.
Oh well, but evil needs to be harshly confronted.

Most people that do these shootings end up getting ended by the responding police force or themselves, at least recently. I agree with your solution, dont waste the jail space and tax dollars but, I also dont think killing them is going to scare others, seeing as the often end up dead or wanting to be dead in the first place. Suicide by cop is pretty common.

You make a lot of sense and I was just going off. We’ve had guns forever, we’ve had crazy people forever. But there seems to be a huge escalation of these crimes (thinking back 20 years or so). Something is causing this?
There must be a remedy – any ideas?

The removal of gun/gun safety from children at a young age, social media drastically affecting mental health of people adults and children alike starting from 2007ish until now and the willingness of friends or family of these individuals to report said individuals behavior before time. Its shocking the amount of things people find on social media that the suspect posted weeks or months before they do something. They dont always outright say they are going to do said act (some times they do) but you can tell somethings off. Authorities should be contacted and should be able to do a wellness check/ search of that persons home. You think these shooters just decided on a whim that morning to go shooting and had zero planning? Idk, im going off subject. A full remedy? No. But What i posted above to me, comes off as the major causes, declining mental health and the willingness to CALL OUT that poor mental health at face value.

JJ averages 6.7 catches per game. Is it worth paying $30M a year to a player who is great at his position, but really only has an effect on about 11% of the plays? This what a team must weigh and decide.

This pay stuff is tough to evaluate. A lot of money – but how many guys can make that 4th and 18n against Buffallo and I think a 3rd and forever he made against Lions.
Now, 30 mil is a lot – but how much will it seem like 2 years from now. Look at QB pay. Something that looked outrageous few years back, seems cheap now.

The 49ers and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks have parted ways, coach Kyle Shanahan announced on a conference call with Bay Area reporters.

Wilks was hired a year ago to replace DeMeco Ryans, who became head coach of the Texans.

I think allowing the Chiefs to march down the field so easily at the end of the 4th quarter to kick a game tying field goal, and then a game winning TD with 3 seconds left in overtime, were part of his undoing.

Makes sense.

However, you cannot really fire every defensive coordinator that Mahomes has made look bad in the playoffs.

If Shannahan thought Wilks made the right decisions on defense, and Mahomes just made him look bad, I doubt he would have been fired. Mahomes really didn’t have much pressure on him, and his receivers, especially Kelce, were pretty wide open all night.

They were talking on the broadcast that it looked like the 9ers called at least one timeout because Wilks was making calls the Shanny wasn’t happy about. If that was more than a 1 or 2 drive thing and depending on how the conversation went after the game, this isn’t a surprise to me.

I think this sort of played out throughout the season actually. When we beat the Niners we pretty much moved the ball at will. The kicker missing both an extra point, and a field goal, were the only reason the Niners were remotely close at the end of the game.

they have the same problem most all NFL defenses have – require pressure. KC ran those short crossing routes, like we did and the Bengals did against them. Without pressure, good NFL QB’s – especially Mahomes with Kelce, will beat this.

I’m a huge proponent of the old book “The Millionaire Next Door”. There is real evidence that financial gifts to adult children make them dependent on such gifts and also leads to real unhappiness in their lives.

I know my parents were very frugal and have a pretty good idea of how much my mother has in savings, and it is approaching or above seven figures. I don’t want a red cent of it cuz I’m just going to see it get taxed to the nines and if she does leave me something will just turn around and donate it to charity (she knows this but still lives like a skin flint in the senior living center I stuck her in and never visit her). I hope to Chris that she gives it all to my sister or charity.

I do not plan on leaving significant cash to my stepchildren. Maybe my wife will if I kick off first which is her business. The land, though, stays in the family.

My two cents.

PS I love famous people they pay so much taxes you gotta love ’em. Think of what Taylor Swift’s return looks like.

My kids will not get rich when I die. The house will be paid for, but Mrs Surly has a very long life expectancy with her Irish-German farmer DNA. Most of her family lives well into their 90s, and she likes to shop.

I will be lucky to hit 80. I just want the house paid off and enough saved up that my wife can keep QVC and a few local stores in business once I die.

I just think selfishly of my own scenario. I am 54 and don’t want for anything in my life. I assume most of us talking about our adult kids are in a similar situation where the kids are about 20 years younger, so when we die at age 80 or so not sure what wild and crazy things a 60 year old is gonna want to do with the inheritance.

Now if you are 40 and have young kids, yeah, you better have them in the will. But as life situations change so do the needs of one’s heirs.

My stepkids get the shouse, land, vehicles, oh and the dogs. Very important the dogs. Whoever gets the dogs gets 10% of the financial assets.

We finally got the will set up, but since it is just the one property, there really is no need for any fancy lawyer trusts. Kids are beneficiaries of our bank accounts, retirement, etc.

If my wife lives long enough they will not get very much, but both kids are doing better as young adults that I was at 30 years old.

The way I look at it, the tomatoes are either an evil joke or she just cares about you eating right. To test this theory, you should convince her that you really hate bacon on your salad. If she starts adding bacon, that’s a win on the lunch but she is just messing with you. If she doesn’t, then she just cares about you eating healthy and your tastes be damned.

Pulled Pork

โ€ข 4# Pork butt
โ€ข 2T Chili powder
โ€ข ยฝT Paprika
โ€ข 1T Cumin
โ€ข 1t Garlic powder
โ€ข 1/2t Cayenne
โ€ข 2t Salt
โ€ข 2t Pepper
โ€ข 2T Brown sugar (or Coconut sugar if you have it)

1. Let pork come to room temp
2. Heat oven to 275 degrees
3. Trim fat cap, leaving 1/8โ€ of fat
4. Score fat with knife
5. Rub seasoning on all sides, coat generously
6. Let sit at room temp for 15โ€™
7. Cook uncovered in roaster for 4-5 hours
8. Remove when internal temp reaches 205 degrees
9. Let rest for 15โ€™
10. Shred and serve, add juices from the pan for moisture if desired

So, here’s the rest of the recipe for those interested. We did it once in the oven as stated at Christmas (it was delicious but timing was messed up and it didn’t reach 205, didn’t shred well), and this past weekend we did it on the pellet grill. Differences were that on the grill I had a 10# butt and smoked at 250 for about 12 hours and the internal temp only came up to about 180, so I turned it up to 350 for another hour to reach 205. And I did not trim the fat cap down. Then we added a can of beer after shredding. I have a pair of oven-safe mitts, and the meat came apart effortlessly.

Having some leftovers for lunch today, can’t wait.

He discusses the trade in his 1st round mock.
What an idiot.

Assuming Kirk Cousins re-signs with the Vikings, the team takes Turner to replenish its soon-to-be depleted pass-rush depth. Minnesota makes its move for a quarterback in Round 2, trading fourth-, fifth- and sixth-round picks to Carolina to swap second-round picks and grab Oregonโ€™s Bo Nix as Cousins’ successor.

Northwoods
Reply to  DE Viking
14 February 2024 2:21 pm

If we’re going to spend 3 picks on a QB, we should go for one of the top ones that might be helpful right away.

With this trade we get a single day-1 starter, a QB that needs to marinate a couple years, and a few late-round projects and fliers who shouldn’t cut ties with their backup plans.

Not really the recipe you need to build a competitive team.

In high school before football games the offense and defense would separate for meetings about 15 minutes before coming out for warmups.

Offense would go over calls and play packages.

Defense would crank โ€˜Kickstart My Heartโ€™ on a boom box and mosh in the locker room.

Dont waste your money on Crew. Saw em back in 2014 and they were mid then already and that was a decade ago. There’s a reason Mick Mars left the band and tried to leave a long time ago and is now vilifed by the others. He called them on their shit. They dont sing live, they dont even play live half the time, Niki Sixx barely touches his bass. If you want the live crew experience just get in your vehicle and play their albums really loud because thats what the concert is going to be, their album recordings. And I say this as a massive Crew music fan, but they’re total tools and frauds live.

My horror story is with State Farm. We have had three roof claims in 26 years. first time they covered 25% of the roof, and only after we had interior water damage. second claim they covered 1/2 of the roof (2009). Last summer, July 3 hailstorm, we had 25+ storm chasers out on the 4th of july. filed a claim with one, rejected. meanwhile I see 11 neighbors in a 2 block radius all getting new roofs. knocked on doors until I found one that was State Farm. Neighbor right behind me got full coverage with state farm and a new roof paid for. State farm allowed $1500 for all the soft metal dmg, but claims you can peel back the shingles, replace the valley metal, and the shingles will not break.

using a third party for arbitration. State farm is fucking evil and not just because they paid Rogers. Still nothing. Now we are waiting for spring even though the roof has no snow, and you can still see the damage from the ground.

I don’t like this story. State Farm is who I have now. My sewer is messed up and needs to be replaced. One company gave me a quote for 15K. Insurance will only cover any damage in the house caused by “water” backing up.

once it is settled, add the rider for city utilities. Under $200 per year in most cases and covers things like that.

So stupid that you have to ask for things that an agent knows you could need, but in my experience, major companies have agents that work for the company, not the consumer.

This is really more anger inducing that another Kirko extension.

Once it is fixed it better not be an issue. The problem is that my house was built in ’55 so it has cast and clay pipes. The cast coming out of the house is cracked. The clay has roots coming in and has a 30 foot or so section that sags so it doesn’t drain properly. To add to that, where it connects to the city main is also broken. At least here, the sewer line is my responsibility all the way into the main. There is a chance that my neighbor is going to be able to get some of his co-workers to do the job for me for about 5K. The difference is they would have to actually dig up my whole yard, but I don’t have any grass anyway and for a 10K savings I have no problem moving the sandbox that is in the way.

Yeah, the thing to do in my opinion is find an insurance agent that can sell insurance from multiple companies. That guy works for you, but is still paid commission from the insurance companies. You have a better chance at having an advocate that will just change your policy to a different agency if they fuck around.

My wife has a misguided loyalty to State Farm since family ties.
I really hate that company, and this issue my put her over the edge.

I’ve had State Farm for decades. The only claim I ever filed was when I had significant damage in my last condo, including white mold, from rain water. The first offer from them was ridiculous. I had to hire professional remediators to do the work. Luckily, the main guy had previously worked as an insurance adjuster. He said they all do it, but particularly State Farm is difficult to work with. He negotiated with them for me. It was a lot of documents back and forth, took a while, but he ended up getting them to cover most everything. Other than my deductible, the only thing I had to pay for was the new carpet.

Yep, I am finding that they are very difficult to work with. After two claims that were partially paid, I am angry enough to argue with all the surliness I can muster. I will not give up on this one.

They have always paid Auto claims with no issues, had a motorcycle stolen and one child had two accident claims. All that stuff was paid right away, but the house is a bigger ticket item. They hate not making money…

Since I’m a car whore I am probably one of his best private customers.

I visit with him about coverage a couple of times a year. I got umbrella through SF as well. Disability and life are through companies associated with my work.

I’ve been happy.

Jeff did share that the cost for insurance in Billings and Glendive is significantly higher than his place in Kalispell, just due to the recent hail storms over the last couple of decades. The rates used to be identical prior to that big Father’s Day storm with the tornado that hit the Metra.

I think we all agree that regardless of any trades he might make in the draft, KAM better bring in someone who is a bona fide game changer. Addison turned out to be a nice pick in the first round last year. Need a starter, who makes a difference every single game, in the first round this year. That’s what the first round is for. WE NEED A STUD IDL.

A game-wrecker. A Cortez Kennedy type. A Vince Wolfork clone. The 2nd coming of John Randle.

Go get Chris Jones or Christian Wilkins. Or Justin Madubuike. Any of these 3 would be a massive upgrade.

Yeah, the Packers really screwed the pooch using a first rounder on Rodgers. Same with the Chiefs and Mahomes. I mean look at how bad the Chiefs have been since then. Absolutely can’t use a top half of the first round pick on a player who isn’t going to play his first year. Much better to use said pick on a player like Cine, or Waynes, or Gladney, or Hughes. The first round pick should be somebody who is going to be on the team for the long term. JJ will be Burrow Jr.

I see your point, but just because they already had great teams, and could invest in a future chance, doesn’t make that plan viable for teams like the Vikings.

If your premise is that the Vikings do not have a good team, then one player is not going to make a difference this year anyway so what is the difference between having a good player on the field or a QB sitting on the bench that will be ready to lead the team for the next 15 years starting in 2025 or 2026? QBs last longer, so get that guy now and then get your “difference makers” when the QB is ready to roll. Your difference maker is younger then and you are set up for longer term success. Draft the difference makers now, by the time the QB is ready to go and the rest of the team is built, said difference maker will be looking for a new contract or walking. This is of course going with your assumption that QBs can’t be good to start, even with plenty of examples of success.

This is weird logic. Take players in the early rounds that will make the team better immediately. Take projects later.

A player that will make your team better for the next 20 years is better than a player that may be good but make no real difference in the outcome of the game for 5-10 at best. JJ is a great WR, but doesn’t make a major difference at the end of the day and probably only has 5-8 years of prime play left. Get a player, the other JJ, that will change the trajectory of the team for the next 2 decades.

The other JJ likely will not change the trajectory of the team (positively that is) for the next 2 decades. That’s total fool’s gold. Begin at the beginning. Start with the players that make the team better today, stop reaching for tomorrow.

A d-lineman will not change the trajectory of the team today. Hunter is pretty damn good and what difference has it made? Drafts are for long term, free agency is for now type players. I’d rather get the long term answer at QB and sign a FA IODL.

I think your logic here would work IF we had a QB on the roster that is of starting caliber.

I agree with Bow on this, get your QB this year, since there is no starting caliber QB on the roster.

Again, this will all depend on what happens with Cousins. If we sign cousins we may be able to get a more developmental QB in the second round and let him sit for 2 years.

Trying to understand you here.
Can’t you draft a difference maker that actually makes a difference from day one – ala Parsons in Dallas?
Now, I’m fine with drafting a QB, a future difference maker, to sit for a while and learn – ala Rodgers. But at the same time, that QB may turn out to not be much of a difference maker, or even a starting NFL QB. And 15 years is really large.
Just me, does seem the Parsons type selection has a higher chance of success, and even at the difference maker level.
I must be not understanding your poiint.

bowbunch

Parsons type players are a difference maker play to play, but does not really change the overall outcome. What have the Cowboys done? They’ve got Diggs too who has been a pretty good player.

Who changed the trajectory and competitiveness of their team more, Burrow or Parsons? Barr or Allen? Even Aaron Donald is not enough to get the team to the SB. The Rams still had to have a QB (and and offense when they were rolling with Goff that was ahead of the rest of the NFL).

JRobert

Parsons took an 18-20 ranked defense and made it top 5. If you have a player like him. Chris Jones, Aaron Donald, they make a difference every play they are on the field.
Now, certainly a Rodgers or Mahomes will make even more of a difference.
But the problem with the strawman presented is is it’s some biased. I would say drafting a Donald has a much higher chance of success than drafting a QB. Both can be difference makers, and the QB more so, but you have a higher ‘chance’ of success with the Donald type pick.
I simply maintain you have a much higher chance of making a good pick at say DT than QB. It’s not whether the QB has more impact overall.

Correct. If they bring in any of the guys I listed in FA then Iโ€™d expect them to go QBOTF or Edge – all depends on the plan at QB, which looks increasingly likely that theyโ€™ll move on from Kirk. If they donโ€™t move on from KC (again, unlikely) then Iโ€™d like to see Dallas Turner brought in.

She didn’t know how they like to roll and they go, “This song is for the ladies.” And she goes, “WOOOOOOOOOOOO” I go, “Stop, you probably don’t want to do that.” She goes, “Why?” Then the singer goes, “This next song is called, FUCKED WITH A KNIFE!” Ahhhh, they don’t make romantic songs like they use to.
