Would not trade JJ, a proven super star, for a ‘chance’ to get another one.

Yep, just use the picks you got. Plus, just think how good JJ will look under center when he has JJ, Hock and Addison to throw to. Get the man a running game and the Vikings will be SB bound.

To be fair, JJ has looked really good with Kirk throwing him the ball.
Not that I don’t want to draft a QB, I just don’t have any feel for any of the college QB’s and how that will translate into the NFL.

Reply to  JRobert

He’s getting schemed wide open A LOT. Its not like JJs completions are all contested tight window throws. An average NFL starter can hit wide open WRs, the problem is learning the reads and the line blocking long enough for those route to get schemed open. I dont have a feel either for any of the college QBs because I dont watch them. However, I do trust JJ to produce just fine with any QB with an arm under center. Which is why he will be fine the Vikings will be FINE when Kirk is gone.

Again, you and the Kirk thing. As always, it’s a matter of degrees.
And yes JJ will do fine with a great many QB’s – how ‘fine’ is the question and none of us know the answer to that.
A simple example might be the frist Detroit game. JJ caught a lot of balls. But we needed him to get just one more ball at the end. A throw with more RPM’s on it, or an even better, surer, play was to hit Nailor wide open at about the ten.
It’s not always scheme and big windows – review the end of Saints in London game last year. JJ one on one with Latimore at the end and we hit him for 50 yards and then kicked winning FG.
I don’t want JJ to perform at the 95th percentile, I want him at the 99th percentile. Just ‘fine’ is not really good enough for the best WR in football.

I think we should draft the qb that will have been, will be and will always be the best qb that ever has played football in the world, nay, the universe and all time. From Mid July to Mid February he will practice and play football for 16 hours a day and sleep for 8. He will not get married or have children because they will be a distraction. The rest of the year he will spend as much time as he can studying football and the rest of his time will be sitting on a street corner strumming a guitar accepting donations. That way he will always just accept the league minimum salary so we can afford to pay everyone else bucko bucks. He will also join every Viking blog (with Skoloholics being his most atended) and will stroke our egos with tales and wonders of his accomplishments. When he retires from the league at the age of 50, he can do whatever he wants. We are kind that way.

Normally I am at six and a half hrs of sleep a night.

In bed before midnight and up about 6:30 to spend some time with The Teacher before she leaves for work just after 7am.

Sometimes a little more sometimes less, maybe on the weekend sometimes I might get in a 7-8 hour nights sleep in,

I need my 8 hours or I’m crankier than usual. Children can be trained. If I got a brain tumor and then thought that it would be a good idea to have an animal in my house, it would either be trained or it would be swimming with the fishes.

Dogs have their ways. It is only a matter of time before they wrap you around their finger and you are fixing them bacon wrapped chicken nuggets when they are off their food, wiping out ear and eye gunk with your finger, studying their poop for blood when they have dysentery, letting them have the lion’s share of the pillow when they are old and stiff but make the effort to jump on the bed, etc…

Just like grandkids.

I wrap up the foot rub at 9 pm, back in from running the dogs at 9:30, read for a half hour, lights out at 10, alarm goes off at 6 dogs are at the door ready to go etc.

I’m usually good for no more than 6.5 – and for years it was often restless sleep where I’d get about 3 hours of actual sleep and the rest of the time I’d be in a half-doze and constantly moving to get comfortable. Eventually give up and start drinking coffee. Last few years I take a sleep med and I can get a solid 6 hours straight and be good to go.

When I was a kid there were two local channels that showed Jeopardy! One at 430 and another at 630. The same episode.

I’d get home off the bus at about 4 and watch the 430 episode.

Then my parents would get home and we’d watch the 630 episode – and I’d dominate. They had no idea there were two channels showing the same episode at different times.

This went on for weeks – and my parents had become convinced I was gifted and were talking about having me skip a grade or two.

Then I came home one day and my Dad was home early. And he was watching Jeopardy! – and he was belly laughing at the prank I pulled.

First time I got a haircut in Korea the barber grabbed my neck and shoulder at the end, She was small so I wasn’t scared just surprised, and she was at the wrong end for a ‘happy ending’.

Back/neck rubs are normal there for the finish of a haircut, not sure if is to help with getting a tip or if is considered an actual part of the haircut.

But it was the ‘usual’ the rest of the time in Korea (1 year) even when I asked them not too.

I saw that, too. On one hand, I get where Kirk is coming from.

On the other hand, the NFL season is super compact and every game is fairly important. I doubt the Patriots took days off.

Actually, Edelman was talking about this with Robert Horry on his podcast. He was comparing the NBA schedule to the NFL schedule. Horry talked about how they had no curfew and partied whenever they went anywhere.

Edleman said that doesn’t happen in the NFL…or at least on the Patriots. They had curfews and meetings continuously. Edleman said he was in the “office” by 5:15 a.m. every day. And he didn’t say it was because they were so disciplined. He said it was because they only had 16 games to work with, so they needed to make the most of their time.

Some talk below about Chicago draft and Fields. Heard this a couple of weeks back and opened my eyes some. A bit of paraphrase.
During Fields streak of ‘improvement’ he averaged 200 yards a game, 1 TD pass. a completion percentage in high 50’s, and a QB rating 20 points below league average. And have since learned has the lowest QB rating in the fourth quarter of any QB.
That is the high water mark after three years.
You want to tie your wagon to that star?

I wouldn’t mind the Vikings bringing him in as a cheap backup and still draft one. Fields is only 1 year older than Bo Nix but has experience in the league. I think his ceiling is still higher than Nix at this point too. This would also not preclude a Kirk extension. A Kirk/JJ/Fields QB room would look pretty nice. Give Fields a chance to sit behind Kirk for a year or two and then trade him. If you get him for a 7th and are able to get a 4th out of him that is still a win.

My band has a song that our drummer calls our Godsmack song. lol. Drummer spent most his life playing in death metal bands since the late 80s early 90s, so when the other guitarist pitched these riffs, the drummer was like, damn I feel like I’m playing Godsmack lol. I think it’s good to have a track that’s more mid-tempo and a bit easier style riffing.

QofDay: Yes, but I would like the trade to happen before the draft starts. If the top 4 QBs are taken right away and we have to scramble to move up, there is a better chance of getting swindled, ala the Detroit trade.

I am thinking if 4 QBs are taken in the top 10 picks that will leave lots of excellent players on the board.

May want to consider taking advantage of that by building up the trenches and defense and pivoting to alternate plan for QBTF, be that QB from the next lvl tier that has promise, FA that could be had/fixed, or next years draft. Heck maybe even teaching Mullins not to throw Ints.

The combine and pro days are often what gets a guy drafted way higher than he should be. Remember Mike Mamula? He trained specifically for the combine and was drafted 7th overall. And never lived up to that billing. There are other examples. But his name sticks out to me.

QofD; A question first – what is a ‘franchise QB’? To me, Mahomes and Goff are both franchise QB’s but there is quite a difference. That’s probably a bit unfair as there is only one Mahomes. But aren’t DAF and Tua franchise QB’s?

Wrenage

I consider franchise QB an automatic playoff appearance every year no matter the roster.

I still think the phrase “top 10 QB” is given too much weight in the NFL. It is built off the 100-percent paradigm.

A true top 10 QB in the NFL is one of the top three since there are only 32 teams.

JRobert

Playoff appearance every year? Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert come to mind.
Think the odds of getting what you want are very very slim. Just getting a top 10 QB is slim enough.

Neat article listing the 33 times an NFL team strung 5 or more consecutive playoff seasons together. The record is 11 seasons, with Brady at NE’s helm.

https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/every_nfl_team_that_made_five_straight_playoff_appearances_010724/s1__37011188#slide_31

Vikings made the list twice, a span from ’73-’78 with Tark, and again from ’96-’00 with Brad Johnson, Randall Cunningham, Jeff George, and Daunte Culpepper having a part in it. A few other teams had 2-3 QBs during their streaks as well.

Although the 4-QB span shows that you don’t absolutely have to have a true franchise QB to do it, the vast majority of the 33 streaks DID have one QB leading the team through the streak – names like Marino, Manning with Colts, Manning with Broncos, Montana, Young, Favre, Rodgers, Shula, Bradshaw, Aikman, Wilson, Allen, Mahomes…..

So, yeah – looks like the odds of stringing wins and playoff appearances go up when you find a really good QB.

Nothing absolute about my post.
Both Lawrence and Herbert have been to the playoffs.
But they don’t have the career length to establish “consecutive” playoff appearances.

I’d put Lamar in that conversation, but he seems to consistently lose in the playoffs.

A question first – what is a ‘franchise QB’?

Are you trolling or really asking?

A franchise QB is a QB that is good enough that there is never a question of “who is the starter next year?” as long as that QB is on the roster.

It really is that simple.

Question to me is simply then. I wouldn’t trade JJ to draft DAK or Tua as they are the starters next year.
However, Mahomes and Jackson are also starters next year, but I would trade JJ to get one of them.

Take the day-1 starter at edge, then do some negotiating to make sure we are in position to take JJ and keep JJ.

I think Daniels (occasionally), JJ (usually) and Nix (always) are all possibilities at 11.
If you think you have to have Maye, or The Crybaby (gag) then a trade up is required.
Thinking you can get JJ 2nd round because of Mocks will probably leave you disappointed come Draft Day.
