  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. 7 days until legal tampering, 8 days till Cousins is either signed, or the Vikings eat $28.5M in cap. I think it’s the latter.

Vikings still have around 25 free agents to either sign or release in the next 8 days as well. Decisions, decisions. Think KAM waits for the free agent dust to settle (see who signs elsewhere) then starts negotiating contracts with the remnants.

Does that make him better or worse that the Big Penix?

Cause after CryBaby, Maye, Daniel, JJ, Nix one of those will be next off the board I believe. CryBaby is a NO, Daniel won’t even allow his medicals to be shared, Maye will go way to early for us so that leaves JJ/Nix.

Not to take away from what Caitlin has accomplished, no one else has gotten close to Pete for all of these years.

Interesting discussion below NLV and SCVF on GM/HC drafting and who’s calling the shots.
A thought for both of you or a question. I like the way the 49ers do it. Lynch/Shanahan know exactly what they want on both sides of the ball. They know the defense and offense they are going to play and how they are going to play. They have an ‘identity’ – very physical football and they have players that fulfill that identity.
Thinking about the Vikings and drafting – just what is our ‘identity’ as a football team?

Under Zim, the Vikings were a run first, play great defense team. That was their identity. It’s why Diggs left. Under KOC, I have no idea.

I think JR’s point still stands. The Niners were built to play strong defense, and run the ball. They have good offensive and defensive lines. Shanahan can win with a decent QB throwing timing routes all day.

It looks to me like KOC knows a lot about passing the ball, and nothing else.

Sort of my point. Steelers, Ravens, Niners – on and on – have an identity, you know their brand (good or bad). Niners, for example, play physical football and thst’s the type of players they draft on both sides of the ball.
Would seem if you just draft players and then figure it out, you can end up in some not so good places..

Patriots identity whether folks realized it or not, was to have a great defense, run the ball well, and have the QB manage the game. Brady didn’t carry the Patriots as much as they set him up for success.

Maybe ‘identity’ is wrong term. When the Steeleres were winning all those SB’s, you knew what they were about. same with Patriots – great defense, running game, and controlled passing attack and didn’t beat themselves.
What are WE about. We’re certainly not a power or physical team.

Not to put to fine a point on this – and I guess I’m not very clear – but “build” to what? The Rams won a SB and Niners almost, but they are very different teams and go about it very differently. Yet, both know what they are trying to do and work to that end.

I think Atlanta would be interested in signing Cousins to a three year $120 to $126M contract, with the first two years fully guaranteed and a no trade clause. Why? Because Cousins is a wholly proven product. He always puts up yards and TD’s at a high rate. He doesn’t make mistakes with the ball very often. He stands in there and takes hits while delivering the ball, with immense fortitude. He’s a locker room leader too, and his team loves him. Genuine good guy, and very good QB. Solid as they come. He isn’t a risky investment. He’s a proven performer. A bird in the hand, is worth two in the bush as they say. Cousins is about as sure a bet as you’ll ever find.

Honestly, the Vikings draft misses and free agent selections (like Davenport) have been on the poor side the last 5 years. How many CB’s did we draft highly that didn’t pan out? O-linemen too. Cine was a flat miss.

KAM is a finance major who came to the NFL via Wall Street, and really isn’t a football guy.

The Vikings talent pool has been on a steady decline due to bad player choices and I fear it’s gonna be a while before they are good again.

Hope I’m wrong.

KAM should be getting info on players from scouts and coaches, not make evaluations on his own.

If he is getting bad info then he needs to get his info from other people i.e. hire different scouts.

If he is ignoring his peoples info and making his own evaluations that is solely on him.

This is a bad take in my opinion. A GM’s job is to build a Championship team. Thinking his staff needs to do instead of him, is wrong-headed. What good is a GM who has to have someone else do his job for him?

Really?
So why does the GM need scouts if he does the ‘Championship Team Building’ all on his own.

He makes the decisions, yes but those are informed by the people he hires for that role.

As you expressed KAM is not a ‘football’ guy. So he would need to rely even more on the scouts/coaches to point him to the right players to acquire.

The GM directs the buildout, he’s the architect. He tells the scouts what he wants, they go find it. I don’t believe this is the way you are advising though. In your commentary, you expect the scouting team to build the team for the GM. I don’t see it that way. The GM has to know football. Like John Lynch. He hit a home run, out of the park, in his very first draft. He’s built a Championship team. KAM is no John Lynch.

I have no idea where you got this idea. I believe that scouts check everyone and tells the GM their strengths and weaknesses, the coaches advise on what player types they need and between them they rank priorities. The GM does his best to get the players that fit what is required.

They work together, obviously, but the GM who is not a ‘football guy’ shouldn’t be telling the coaches what fits his ‘blueprint’.

I think this discussion is going around in circles. The point is, KAM is not a football guy. He has never built a football team. Look at Harbaugh. He’s going to come in and he’s going to make sure the offensive and defensive lines are top shelf, first and foremost. He’s going to be sure he has a solid run game, and he’s going to look for thumpers at linebacker. He’ll build a Championship contending team.

KAM is outmatched. He has no blueprint, and moreover, unlike John Lynch, he doesn’t even know what makes a good football player. He was asked what he was looking for in a QB, and his answer was as sophomoric as it comes.

Happy to hear the compound is coming along, place sounds (and looks) amazing. Especially happy for the pooches. Slice of heaven on earth. Well done.

62 degrees and sunny here.

Windy, but that’s because Iowa sucks so much.

Had a 1st floor tenant in one of my buildings move out – moving my MIL in there tomorrow.

Been a long few weeks of going through her current house (and mostly throwing stuff out) things were way worse than we suspected – she wouldn’t let us come into the main part of the house as the basement is an old cellar and the entrance is separated but enclosed on the back porch – long story short, she didn’t have electricity in the majority of the house (blown fuses) and the tub/shower (the only one) was piled chest-high with various junk. So she clearly hadn’t been showering. I threw out over a hundred empty’s pint size bottles of Vodka.

Obviously she was very embarrassed by all this and as my mother is gone and I’m very fond of her my instinct is to protect her and try and support her.

My SIL’s instinct has been to shame her. Which hasn’t helped.

My wife (a real-life Angel) and I have chosen to be proactive. Got the house cleaned up and sanitized. Lights on and working. Bathroom clean and usable. We make a point to go over daily and help her with laundry and meals and just spend time with her. Wife is there now. I attend AA meetings with her 3 times a week. So far, so good.

The move tomorrow will be a big boost to her quality of life. The place is small, quiet, good neighbors and I’m not charging her much.

Sunday mornings are my favorite. It’s me and the dogs. Coffee. I’ve been watching the news so far and soon I’ll watch ‘Meet the Press’ and ‘Face The Nation’. Wife will be home later and we’ll do seared salmon and rice, snow peas and Thai noodles. Just started watching ‘The Walking Dead’ together so I’m sure that’ll be on tap for today.

I’ve burned some pretty strong sativa this morning and feel fresh, invigorated and….. hungry.

Also felt the need to respond to you in an epic, TL:DR, MT-type post that I figured you’d appreciate.

Have a good weekend Sawbones….🤘😎🤘

Chris Kirk starts his round with four straight birdies. The first four holes can be gotten. If Rickie can do that he’ll pull within one shot of the lead and have a real chance. The course is playing soft, and there’s almost no wind. Rickie shot 5 under on the front nine in the second round, so he has it in him. The leaders obviously could also score well and just keep everyone from catching them, but if they tighten up a little, the finish could be very exciting today. There are 25 players within 5 shots of the lead. Gonna be a fun watch.

Wow.

Xavier Worthy, WR Texas

Official 40 time: 4.21

5’11” 165 – small, but can fly.

knock on him is his size, but he’s an inch bigger and the same weight as Tank Dell who balled out as rookie.

love to see this kid fall because of size concerns and take a late round gamble on him as a potential WR3

DeSean Jackson was 5’10” and 175 lbs. Speed is great, but what set Jackson apart was his innate spacial awareness and ability to track the ball and catch it. Much like Willie Mays, he was great at running at top speed, and still making a great play on the ball.

Worthy would have to show me he was special in that way, before I’d consider him. As Darrell Green said, “there are fast guys, and then there are fast guys who can play football”.

Might think about John Ross, a 5’11, 188 lb WR who ran a 4.22 forty in 2017 at the combine. The Bengals drafted him, and he never did anything at all in five seasons in the NFL (four with the Bengals, and one with the Giants).

Mjolnir
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan

Fully aware of John Ross – and of the folly of getting enamored by speed. Troy Williamson, Kevin White, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Fabian Washington, Sammy Watkins – all billed as burners and all 1st round picks that didn’t live up to the hype.

But speed is also a gift, and with the right player it’s a weapon – a lethal one in the right offense. I’ve seen very little tape on Worthy to know whether or not he can run anything other than 9 routes. No idea if his game is complete, assume he (like the majority of rookies) will need some polishing.

I’d also assume that the 4.21 number shoots him up the boards of many teams – I think of next year and having a 3WR set with JJ and JA and Worthy (if he were available in the later rounds, Vikes have more pressing needs than WR) Polished or not, that 4.21 number is something every D coordinator in the league would be aware of, and have to account for. Who knows if his game translates? Can he beat press coverage consistently? Can he win when he needs too? Does he understand leverage? Is he a willing blocker?

He had an impressive vertical (41 inches) and broad jump as well (10’11”)

He did NOT participate in position drills – which leads me to believe he’s pretty unpolished as a route runner.

DeSean Jackson’s career was particularly impressive in that he was able to take the top off a defense up until the end. I always thought he played bigger than his pads as well, wasn’t afraid to go across the middle – I remember early in his career him getting knocked cold by Dunta Robinson of the Falcons.

Also, I think there’s an argument to be made for Darrell Green as far as greatest DB of all time. Obviously had his speed but he was a pretty good tackler, wasn’t afraid to play run support and despite his smaller frame was as good as a cover corner as there has been and routinely gave up height and weight to WR’s and could shut them down. Good return man too.

I loved this Mock!

I know it is not remotely possible but I had a lot of fun and learned more about what players are available and when they might be had (not really).

Lots of little trades back and had to pass on JJ for extra players, good players, 5 in the Top 100, 11 in the Top 200, reading their reviews I believe each fills a need on our team.

#23 Cooper DeJean S Iowa

#48 T’Vondre Sweat DT Texas

#51 Michael Penix Jr. QB Washington

#86 Sedrick Van Pran OC Georgia

#96 Kris Abrams-Draine CB Missouri

#109. Junior Colson LB Michigan

#138 Kitan Oladapo S Oregon State

#156 Layden Robinson OG Texas A&M

#166 Isaiah Davis RB South Dakota State

#179 Zion Tupuola-Fetui EDGE Washington

#181 Brevyn Spann-Ford TE Minnesota

Like DeJean at #23 would be a great boon in our Def Backfield.

His Review:

S Iowa Height: 6 – 2 | Weight: 195 | RAS: N/A

After a 2022 campaign that saw him put up five picks, eight PBUs, and three pick-sixes, Cooper DeJean is riding high as a potential Round 1 selection.
He’s a cornerback, but at 6’1″, 209 pounds, DeJean looks more like a safety. In support, he looks like a linebacker — not only slabbing DBs and deconstructing blocks but also maintaining gap discipline and surging inside for tackles.
Don’t let that support ability fool you, either. DeJean is a truly complete player. One of his best traits is his smooth, high-octane coverage athleticism for his size and his rare natural playmaking instincts. – Ian Cummings

Daniels, Rattler then Penix.

Resolve the KC issue. Not a fan of giving this years picks or futures. To many holes. wouldn’t mind a Fields, read cubs might want a 2 and 4 for him, eff that. They have to decide soon also. Consensus they want Caleb, will see. Stupid season moves on.

I would just want for KAM to be practical and prudent in making selections. The draft is a crapshoot, so let’s work the numbers, see who looks like they will improve the team make-up, and try and bring in quality players who will contribute. The Vikings have been notorious for drafts that look good at first blush, but then the players never really pan out.

QofTD.

After JJ my favorite of the draft is T’Vondre, DE Texas.

This is his review,
A mammoth at 6’4″ and 346 pounds, T’Vondre Sweat is a force to be reckoned with in the middle of the Texas defense. He makes everything else possible for his teammates, holding up extremely well at the point of attack, even against double teams. He’s a big part of the reason the Longhorns had such a massively improved front seven in 2022.
Sweat’s stats aren’t impressive due to his role, as he’s amassed only 124 tackles and five sacks over five seasons. However, his 2023 season was his best yet, consistently getting into the backfield in addition to demanding double teams. We’ve seen a trend of huge, athletic DTs going in the first, and Sweat looks poised to be the next. – Ian Valentino

At the combine he weighted in at 366 (not 346) and he impressed with the rest of his drills/measurables (except broad jump). We need that huge anchor in the middle of our Defensive Line IMHO, stop the run, apply some pressure up the middle. We all know how it feels to have a NT truck our OC.

He was rated in the mid 30-40 range before the combine he is probably in the 1st round now.
Honestly I would not be mad if we got him instead of JJ if they had a decent plan for QBofTF.

I’m also in love with this guy. He’s the big, disruptive force in the middle that we need. Collapse pockets and destroy run schemes. May never see more than 5 sacks in a season – and that’s just fine. His impact won’t show up on the stat sheet but it’ll shine brightly in games if he turns out to be the kind of player I think he can be.

Was also impressed with both Dallas Turner and Chop Robinson’s 40 times. Turner may be the best athlete in the draft and they both ran 40’s faster than a number of DB’s that will start in this league. Dallas Turner reminds me a ton of Micah Parsons.

I try not to get too wrapped up in combine numbers as they often don’t translate to the field but it’s hard to ignore Turner’s. 40 inch vertical and a sub 4.5 40 – at almost 250 lbs. Wondering what his bench press numbers are.

Mjolnir
Reply to  Mjolnir

I’d also be surprised if Turner is there at 11. I think he goes top 7 – maybe even top 5. FA will decide a ton of this, but I gotta believe both he and Sweat shot up draft boards the last few days. Sweat’s 40 wasn’t as strong as Jordan Davis a few years ago – but he doesn’t need to chase down RB’s 40 yards down field, it’s just a bonus if he can.

By the way, all this GBOTF hype, is all lost for Hall and developing him. Niners diid OK running with a late round draft pick.

I don’t know – Shaney runs an offense that is QB friendly as it takes max advantage of his skill set players. In a way, so does KOC – JJ, JA and Hock. It just requires more of the QB position.
You can throw a 3 yard hitch to Debo and he can take it to the house. JJ can’t do that, but he can run an excellent 25 yard corner with double coverage. Both work.

Ours only works if you have the QB who can run it and an O-line that gives him enough time.

We have the highet paid TE in football, drafted a WR2 with first round, and are about to make JJ the highest paid WR1 in football. Seems we are already committed to throwing it ‘down’ the field.
If we want to change, then there needs to be some big change in our offensive philosophy.
And since we can’t run the ball, and a poor screen game, don’t know about a change just right now.

No, simply we run a system that maximizes the talents of our skill players.
Now, I believe if JJ was more like Debo, and Hock like Kittle, we could (and should) run our offense differently.
In both systems, SF or us, the QB’s are merely driving the car and distributing the ball. It’s just a fact that it’s easier to throw 3 yard hitches than 25 yard outs.
