I got four over/under bets on wins placed.

Lions under 10.5 wins
NYJ under 9.5 wins
FTP under 9.5 wins
Vikings over 6.5 wins

Since I have zero expectations on the Vikings being good, I need other NFL entertainment to keep me focused.

After 4 SB losses I have learned never to bet on sports things that I wanted to happen.

I would bet the under on Minn so I would be happy to lose that bet, since history has taught me I will likely lose that bet.

Jared Goff on his new contract with the Lions:

“It was mostly security. You can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot, and that wasn’t really the thing that was ever something I was extremely concerned with,” Goff said. “It was the security and the no-trade clause and all of that stuff, knowing that all that was in there and feeling secure in knowing that I can finally put that behind me and be excited about what’s to come.”

Don’t believe that – completely.
Once was promoted to an Ops Center manger level. Company had four – two in crappy areas. My employment contract said they could move me to any of the others in they needed to. I took the promotion but my wife and I hated it for the having to move aspect (needed the money though).
When my next contract came up and I was in a much stronger position, I had the “move” provision removed from the contract.
It can be more than the money.

I believe in the HR world they call it ‘hygiene.’ which means there is a sort of thresh hold for some characteristics. For example take money – a person’s minimum hygiene is X and if you don’t reach that nothing else. will fly. You reach that, and negotiation on other factors.
As such I would never claim it’s ‘solely’ about the money. But money is no doubt always a facotr.

When Schwarzenegger was Gov he insisted on the ability to move all the Correctional Officers to where ever he needed to (daily even, no notice or compensation). The Union fought him tooth and nail for years. He did whatever he could to withhold pay and make life miserable for all of us. He dropped our Salaries to Minimum Wage while we started a recall effort.

It was ugly and lasted awhile, I was voting for the State Controller (D) for as long as he ran for office since he was fighting Arnold for us.

Work location/conditions were a bigger issue than pay.

I voted for a Democrat because he had they same values/beliefs on that issue that I did.

His job was controlling the $$, He refused the Gov orders to screw 200k workers by slashing their pay to $6.55 an hour. Our pay was reduced during the drama but it was reimbursed afterwards.

I hope I always vote for the best person for the job, and John Chiang was that despite the (D) next to his name.

After what the (R) Gov tried to pull I realized that was not always the case.

Funny in Texas when I voted there they have a ‘lever’ system. You can slide a lever to the (D) side or the (R) side and set all your votes that way. Didn’t have to think past party there.

On another front, given our discussion the other day, how you feeling about Tiger and his game for championship golf.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  JRobert
18 May 2024 7:33 am

Tiger was not sharp this week. Did you see that hole where he piped his drive, had 75 yards left to the hole, missed the green, and took bogey? He hit some great drives, hit some great irons, and even made some really good putts. But boy, that stretch of 3 holes where he went triple, bogey, triple, just killed him.

So, do I think Tiger still has enough game? yes, I do. Will he ever round into form and actually play to his potential again? Dunno.

BTW, as sad as it is to say it… Rickie Fowler is in the same exact boat.

My thoughts centered on this.. Some time ago Trevino said – ” There’s two things that don’t last in the world, dogs chasing cars and pros putting for pars.”
Think some of the short game wizards like Seve and Watson ( and Tiger) defied this for a while, but it catches up to all of them. Especially if you’ve had injuries and can’t practice to the extent you need to.
Now, you mention those three holes that were brutal. But in the first round he was one over and the leader was nine under. The course was ripe for scoring and Tiger couldn’t do it.
So does Tiger have enough game? Sort of – but his injuries and age don’t allow him to practice and play enough to get his game to a championship level, Thus, I don’t believe he is a top level championship golkfer any more.

I just picked up all my shelterbelt trees from the County Conservation District. 350 trees and they all fit in three black garbage bags. It was pleasant to reflect that it took me a total of 20 minutes round trip (including retrieving and loading the trees in my pickup) to go from the hospital to the office and back. Try doing that in Yellowstone County (Billings). That’d be like a 90 minute round trip or more this time of day.

Guess what I’m doing next week when I’m off? It’s on – my wife has oft repeated that there is no way these trees will survive, “Grandma and Grandpa tried for years to get trees to grow, they had no luck, the only trees that grow are the ones that occur naturally.” Well, we shall see, I mean I’ve only invested 100 man hours and several thousand bucks in a shallow well, pump, trencher, pipe, manifolds, drip irrigators, more pipe, etc…

If you haven’t realized it yet, I am extremely literal. As in, “the instructions say to put tab A in slot B, we can’t do C yet!” The instructions I read on the state conservation website said no fertilizer first year, it stimulates the trees too much and they might not get ready for winter in time.

I did amend the soil with as much manure as I could scoop up around the corrals.

If he wants to lure in the venison he needs to plant some sainfoyne for the “cattle”. Baiting is not legal in Montana and food plots count as baiting, so anything planted needs to have a legitimate agricultural use. I’m not sure about the wording these days, but at one point, the way the baiting law was written in Montana even a bird feeder would be illegal.

I will say I think it is much ado about nothing. I also admit bias with respect to the Catholic church (which I do not care for). But were I invited to give a commencement address at a U, Catholic or Baptist or what have you, I think it would be incredibly insensitive to address the 50+% of the graduates that are female and have worked hard for a degree, by telling them the majority of them are most looking forward to their future as mothers. There’s a time and a place, graduation is not the time and the place.

I grew up in a town that was heavily Catholic. My impression for years was that American Catholics were mostly Catholic by name because they pretty much disregarded most of what Rome taught and did whatever they wanted. That could have been influenced by my Catholics friends however. It seems now that there is a stronger influence in the American Catholic church to follow what Rome teaches more closely.

a little story.
Many years back my wife gave me some advise as I was working too much and not home enough.
What she said – ” You know when you get to heaven St Peter probably won’t ask you if you worked hard enough. But he probably will ask have you been a good father and husband.”

Trying to schedule a water heater installation in the next few weeks. All venting/piping is up to code, and it is a Rheem 50-gallon power vent that needs to be installed (after unhooking the old one). I have been told it is an “easy job that shouldn’t take more than about 2 hours” based on my setup which is up to code, but have been quoted $700+ (with water heater included the price is $3,000 to over $5,400, which is laughable since the water heater itself is a natural gas power vent that costs $1,200).

I am looking for something more reasonable than that – maybe around $300-$400. Anybody know anybody?

Considered it, but apparently there are some specific tools needed for some of the hookups that cost $100 or so dollars, and moving the thing is part of what I need help with as well (wife can’t help). And the time and risks involved make it worth considering having professional help.

I get that. I really don’t mean to come across as a know it all, I grew up in a traditional household where my dad (and of course my mom) had zero DIY skills. For example, my sister and I were rough housing once and I stepped back against the wall, putting a hole in the drywall. My dad’s solution was to put a dog doll/stuffy in front of the hole. Fifteen years later when my future wife first stayed in the home, she asked me why that dog was sitting there, was it to hide the obvious hole?

With the advent of YT videos, it is amazing how accessible most projects have become. More than once I have had to fix slip shod work done by the previous homeowner or some nincompoop that was subbed out by the contractor.

You probably need a PEX tool…I have one, handy to have for plumbing projects as PEX is like Lego compared to sweating copper pipe. I can see where it wouldn’t be worth it to buy one for a one time deal. Also moving help is my major limiting factor with many projects.

Bone marrow transplant starts at 11 am and could last 6 to 8 hours. This part is actually more boring than traumatic. The stem cells are introduced via tube into the blood stream, like a blood transfusion. It is taking so long because as my son said to us, “It’s a large volume, sounds like, and it’s titrated to tolerance.” He’s a nurse, so I assume he knows what he is talking about and yes, I had to look up the word titrated.

Just exchanged the word weeks in the info below with probably the word minutes or hours.

In titration, the medication is started at a low dose. Every couple of weeks, the dose is raised (“up-titrated”) until the maximum effective dose (“target dose”) has been achieved or side effects occur. Not everyone can tolerate a full dose. It’s safer to ease your way up.

I’m no expert, and I have forgotten the past details of this case, but I believe this is an autologous HCT. This (I believe) is a one time thing, maybe they could do another cycle but that would depend on engraftment of the transplant.

Per UpToDate:

Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is an important method for treating certain malignant and nonmalignant disorders. HCT offers potential long-term survival for patients with cancers that have a high risk for relapse, relapsed or refractory malignancies that cannot be cured using other approaches, and bone marrow failure states, including for inherited/germline conditions that affect hematopoiesis.
HCT is used to replace malignant (or defective) hematopoietic tissue using a healthy donor’s hematopoietic cells. Conditioning therapy (chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy) is given to reduce the burden of disease and to prevent rejection of the donor hematopoietic cells. Hematopoiesis is then restored by infusion of a graft of healthy hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) from either another individual (allogeneic HCT) or the patient’s own cells (autologous HCT).

HSPCs can be obtained from peripheral blood, bone marrow, or umbilical cord blood (UCB), each of which is associated with advantages and disadvantages. Specific graft sources are preferred in certain settings, which should consider the underlying disease (ie, malignant versus nonmalignant), type of transplantation (ie, allogeneic versus autologous), recipient age, and comorbidities. The most important factor in selecting a specific donor for transplantation is immune compatibility between the recipient and donor at HLA loci.

Personally, playoffs every other year doesn’t cut it for me. I expect crap this year. But if they don’t get to the playoffs in 2025, I will be the first one to complain.

And if it is clearly because of the QB, I will say so.

seems everyone thinks differently and that’s OK.
Now, JJ can turn out just fine but if Lions and Packers keep playing well, and young Williams is for real, we can be in a bad spot
Lots of factors.

You mean Redskins – Gibbs, Dallas – Landry, Eagles – Ryan, and Giants – Parcells.
Lot of HOF coaches and players.
Would be big time exciting.

I think it’s easier to watch football if the team is winning consistently.
Playoffs every other year, regardless of the QB, is terrible and hard to watch.

I had fun through the Keenum trip, but I have not had hope for long term and real success since Teddy’s knee exploded. I was riding high and that day scarred me. That was one of those I could tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing moments. JJ is the hope we need and hopefully the QB to take us to the promised land.

Jets will get 35 and they’ll still have plenty of cap space. Come 2028, JJ will get 65 or 70.

First year the cap will be minimally effected, heck it could even go down.
After that KC/Hunters cap hits will be off the books. Those should be enough by themselves to cover Jets extension/new contracts cap hit.

But then you have Darrisaw and other emerging stars, so instead of paying Cousins, you are paying others exorbitant amounts. Same situation, different players, in my opinion. But we won’t have to deal with KC complaints! haha

It is always a juggling act. Contracts have to be written like a jigsaw puzzle to get them all to fit together.

Never said it would be easy, just that it can be worked out. Jets is a big piece of the puzzle but not the whole picture.

Having JJ/Turner on rookie deals gives us more latitude, every year tough choices have to be made.

We’ll never know I guess. Same things were said about Irv Smith (big step, breakout, dominate). Hard to say until it actually happens. But from what he showed before that, he was never better than average or a game-manager IMO. Not dominant in any facet of the game, and quite frankly, floated a lot of deep passes (seemed to have a weak arm to me).

Obviously we’ll never know and that wasn’t the point. My hope for this team died that day. I’ve cheered em on and thought maybe Case could do it, but never anything close to that until now. JJ may be a total bust, but until that happens, I have hope that Kwesi and KOC can build a team to truly compete and not just hope to make the playoffs and get the Daniel Jones’s of the world extensions.

I have no question Sheffler was not obeying traffic rules. Running late because of traffic is not excusing his driving around cones or whatever.

I have seen the adrenaline-junky overreaction from officers and it is scary.
Since the guy jumped on his car, and went hard af after him, this could be a case of that.

They do overreact occasionally, they are also in complicated situations with lots of training on how to react to certain situations.

Sometimes they are reacting to something that they were trained and briefed on and people who didn’t get the training/briefing attribute to something else.

And sometimes they are just being Jerks being triggered by perceived lack of respect. Don’t know/care about enough this situation to understand, but I still manage to find it funny in a ‘1st world problem’ kind of way.

It is true, she has very similar personality and work ethic as my wife. Of course, there would be the problem of her husband, oh well). As you say, I sometimes feel like I need to watch myself oversharing things, it is almost like confessional – “man this combine was driving too slow so I passed on a double yellow line and hit 80 doing so”.

The Judge who performed the wedding was a friend/professor to both my kids.

We were assigned seats next to each other at the reception and we had a great time/conversation . She dropped a few hints but I had The Teacher waiting back in Calif so I just played Friendly and Personable with her.

Often wondered how it would have worked out with The Judge.
