Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

‘only’ down 77-44.
10m or so left in the 3rd.
Plenty of time for an epic comeback.

I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath waiting for it though.

Had a retirement party today for our outgoing director. She’s been on campus for 40 years. Cake. Cards. Some tea. Was nice.

Then news of the Trump conviction came in….

College campus, predominantly liberal if not full-on progressive for the most part. I’m pretty centered politically but leaning more right as I get older. I generally keep my opinions to myself at work – kind of a not-shitting-where-I-eat thought process.

Inevitably someone asks me what I think – I start by saying that I’m not convinced that these convictions will stop Trump from being elected – I mention that I think this will likely do nothing more than rile up his base, further convincing his supporters (whether die-hard or party line voters) to show up on November 5th (my 46th birthday btw…) and vote him into office. I also proffer the idea of newly-minted Americans from Europe (those that have seen and experienced show trials) drawing parallels to today’s convictions and the political unrest of the places they just left and therefore might be inclined to vote DJT in November. In short – this conviction doesn’t change a goddamn thing.

I also go onto mention that in 2016 I voted for Trump – I bought into the idea of change and an outsider genuinely speaking for everyday Americans. 4 years later I’d grown tired of DJT and all that comes with him. The arrogance. The buffoonery. Just flat grew to dislike the man. Right or wrong it’s the truth. (None of those qualities make him unqualified to be our country’s leader btw. Unsavory perhaps, but not unqualified either)

So I was left with a difficult choice in 2020, really no choice at all – I detest Joe Biden. I think he’s a complete fraud. He’ll buy votes, insinuate racism in others that don’t vote for him and enact racist policies that have gone a long way to perpetuate stereotypes regarding minorities, in particular the African American voting base. He’s a career politician with the dirtiest hands in D.C.

So I wrote in Joe Pesci – because as the late, great George Carlin put it ‘Joe Pesci is a guy that gets shit done’

In reality my write in vote for Joe Pesci was my own form of political protest – I refuse to not vote. A lot of men of far better intellect, guts, valor and integrity died for me, for us – to have that right. I don’t take that responsibility lightly. I’ve voted in every major political election (and the local ones) since I was 18. I’ll continue to do so until the undertaker fires up the oven – even if to some it’s a meaningless or ‘throw away’ vote.

Which brings me back to today’s conversation. I mention that neither DJT or FJB have done anything to earn my vote, so I’ll likely vote a 3rd party or write-in candidate (RFK? Stein? Billy Bob Thornton?)

And the immediate response from a coworker was: ‘You’re stupid if you do that, it splits the vote’ – verbatim. She didn’t say the idea was stupid, she said I was stupid. Which translates in my mind to ‘You’re not voting for my guy so you must be voting for the wrong guy’ She then went on to say that I should not vote at all. That it will mean more if I don’t.

Did I miss a fucking meeting or something?

Is it not my right to vote for whomever I like, provided they’re of the age of 35 or older and an American citizen? Aren’t those the rules?

I’m sure it’s okay with all of the aforementioned good men (and their families) that died to ensure that I have that precious right if I instead make a mockery of them and the sacrifice they made by not voting – because it’s not helping either of the major political candidates (by her logic actually hurting her candidate – because there have been soooooo many examples of major political elections that have been decide by a single independent voter not voting for either of the two major candidates ) I mean, y’all remember that single vote for Perot in ‘92 that swung the election in Clinton’s favor right? Right? You don’t? Oh….because it did not nor has it ever fucking happened that way.

I am so sick of this with-us-or-against-us mentality. I’ve got no time for it unless it pertains to sports fandom or Coke vs Pepsi.

TL;DR (your move sawbones…🙂)

Timed to get stoned to the bejeezus and watch some cartoons.

Good analogy.

Once the discussions go off the raid and become an augment I usually disengage.

I grew up with an Alcoholic and know that arguments become fights which by definition are meant to hurt/subdue the other person.

If they refuse to see it nothing you will do will change that.

Same – both of my parents were/are high functioning alcoholics – part of why I’m a cannabis smoker. Both were successful people and my heroes – but both could be incredibly mean spirited when drunk – if the mood struck. Most of the time they were happy drunks, which brought it’s own set of problems – not as bad as those that get violent when drinking, but issues nonetheless.

The last time I was this excited to watch one side go comepeltly against one of their core rallying cries was during covid when the Dems had been yelling for decades “My body, my choice!” Start going, “Here, you have to put this in your body!”
If course when I pointed that out to my Dem friends they said it’s a different situation which of course it was but the idea is the same.

Just like this deal with Trump being found guilty on all charges… Of course the law can be skewed and pick on certain people or groups of people but it’s only unfair and injustice worth being upset about when it’s hurting your side. Otherwise it’s RA RA LAW AND ORDER BLAH BLAH BLAH, YOU’RE NOT A VICTIM IF YOU BREAK THE LAW AND I SUPPORT THE LAW… Now it’s, “NO FAIR THE LAW IS PICKING ON MY SIDE WE’RE A VICTIM”

I am not saying that’s everyone here’s stance but that is the narrative trying to be spun by right wing media. And many folks eat that up. Just like left wing media spinning the and twisting on support of vaccines.

Trump has been the most litigated President (and former President) in history. The DoJ conducted a raid on his house for God’s sake. The liberals have weaponized the DoJ against conservatives and everyone better be very afraid now. This trial was a total sham. A petit jury must unanimously agree on guilty, or not guilty, or else it’s a hung jury. The judge said the jury could find Trump guilty though, on any of the charges, even if they didn’t all agree. Travesty of justice here Edge. This was a Kangaroo court if I’ve ever seen one. Gag order after gag order on Trump, while the prosecution tried their case in the media. It was a complete political assassination. Put your political opponents in jail so you can maintain power. This is a horrible moment in our Nation’s history.

As an outdoorsman, you might find this mildly interesting. Now that my 350 trees (or more importantly, my financial investment – shallow well, pump, piping, irrigation tubing, drippers, $430 for the trees) are in the ground my worries are far from over, next up will be the durn deer that will sneak over and help themselves. DNRC recommended a product called Plantskydd, I figured it was some topical agent that tastes bad and would wash off quickly.

Read about it, turns out the active ingredient is none other than pigs blood. Safe for the environment and effective at making the deer think a predator is about. I LOVE it. Gonna get some granular concentrate and mix up a batch of stinky pig blood, spray it on like a vampire movie.

The only reliable methods I have previously heard of were either putting wire around the trees or leaving a dog outside, and even then with the latter I’ve heard of the deer just staying out of reach of a chained dog, or coming in to feast while the dog is off snoozing in the barn or sniffing a rabbit hole. Well, I’m not shelling out $$$ for chicken wire and poles nor am I gonna leave a dog outside so this product is worth a try. Sounds like you have to be very meticulous mixing it up, not surprisingly it can clump or clot as you mix it up.

An electric fence can work also. Not high like you would for cattle. Run one wire at a normal height (doesn’t have to be electric) then run an electric wire 12-18 inches tall 18 or so inches outside of the tall wire.

If you don’t extend it past the trees you should be alright. Cows might trample it though. The inner fence is just a visual thing. It’s too get the deer to look at it while they walk into the lower fence since they can’t feel an elective fence anywhere but their legs. Cows would destroy your trees too and horses would be death to em. The problem with scent and noise is that the deer begone accustomed to it. I could tell you some stories but I’m the interest of not revealing too much to the hooligans here I won’t. I can’t email ya some other information though and tell ya about a case study I personally know of on this electric fence.

We have 3 loads to Goodwill so far, a few more scheduled.
They are picky though, nothing to big, old, etc.

Next trip is to the church with Boyds Bear Cottage Collection for their annual ‘Summer BBQ’ White Elephant Sale.

Then some more sorting in the storage unit, another dump trip and then we can concentrate on the house when school is done next week.

School runs a little longer in Cali…been done here for over a week.

Yeah, Goodwill was checking out the stuff we were dropping off with the first load. After that, each time we came back the loading dudes just put stuff in the carts, probably organizing stuff for the “take home” pile haha.

‘School runs a little longer in Cali’

We blame it on all the ‘snow days’ here in So Cal.

Hard to tell what Goodwill will ‘turn away’.

I’m sure it’s simply to meet some stupid federal mandate for minimum days or some such stupidity. Let the schools, especially the private ones do whatever they want, especially if the kids are meeting and exceeding testing unlike the one of the public schools I read about recently. The entire public school scored worse in the standardized testing than an all special needs school.

They were going to have an extra day on Monday, just to ‘check the box’.

The Teacher reminded them that the School Board approved her retirement for Friday so she could not teach on Monday even if she wanted to.

They decided to not have school on Monday.

Keep in mind “minimum aggregate hours” is in part mandated by federal requirements and is paramount to the whole process of converting your tax dollars into schools, upkeep of schools, utilities, and last but not least compensation of teachers.

You may be willing to let teachers skate by with less than 1080 hours of teaching a year (minus the pupil instruction related days ie teaching resource days) but I am not.

Since Glendive is on a 4 day school week cycle they are up against it with minimum aggregate hours. Every time there is a snow storm there is this lament from parents about how there should be a snow day; it’s interesting to see how very few snow days are taken when that would mean there would be additional days of instruction in the spring.

That is what we are going thru with this move, only we have to pay take what we want to keep to Idaho.
Nice part is that since it is a ‘As Is’ sale I can just leave whatever I want (or don’t want) behind.

This may be a case of “can’t see the forest for the trees”. PFF measures all sorts of stuff, and maybe by some combination of metrics, the Vikings O-line grades well. Like, our tackles are really good, and they score high, so when combined with the other linemen scores, the “overall” looks good. I personally think they should be rated more as a group, based on missed blocks, pressures, hits, knockdowns, and sacks of the QB, etc. But PFF has this “win-loss rate” metric that is exacerbated by combination blocks. If two guys are blocking one guy, and they fail, neither of the linemen take a ding, because it’s too hard to discern culpability, I guess. These kinds of metrics “miscues”, skew the data.

I can’t remember the specifics, but when we sold our home in Rochester and moved to Billings back in summer of 2010, I had checked with Wells Fargo to ensure our autopay mortgage payment would not continue after the home was sold and mortgage paid off. “It should stop automatically” I was told. Of course middle of the next month out came the payment and we were right up against a zero balance in chequing thanks to the delay in receiving my first cheque at the new employer, paying for the move and waiting for the moving reimbursement to drop on that first cheque, etc. Called WF and they couldn’t care less, said it would take a couple of months to refund the money they had withdrawn. About six months later had some ticky tacky thing where they charged us a fee accidentally for transferring from chequing to savings account and ballistic MT Viking came out, had them transfer everything over to a local bank, manager was asking again and again if she could make it right and I was all nope nope nope, every time I call the customer service line I get a nincompoop and I’m not taking time out of my work day to traipse down here every time you f up.

Mortgage on the Idahome was bought, transferred to Chase so The Teacher deals with them.

Went into our local bank (with appointment) saw two suits sitting in a office BS-ing, Receptionist told them we were there, One handled some other customer while we waited and the 2nd sat there 15m then took a lunch break and then come up to get us since our appointment was with him.

I dislike most large banks. It doesn’t matter how much the CEO says that they care about their customers, it doesn’t translate down to the lower levels of the company. Edmonton knotted up the WCF last night. Now it is a best of three series, with Dallas having home ice advantage. It sounds simple, but Edmonton has to come out and push offensively with all their abilities. If Chris Tanev can’t play for the Stars that will be huge, he is a beast d-man. Something we do a lot in big cities is do the local hop on hop off tour bus, see the places we want to spend more time and ask the drivers the easiest way to get here from there, etc…a lot of times we just extend the hop on hop off tickets and use that system. We’ve even had bus drivers offer to pick us up in their personal vehicle at the corner of x and y when they are heading home from another job. We’re what you call friendly folks with innocent dispositions.

Saw the collectibles discussion a few days ago. Spring cleaning project is cleaning out our storage room.
I have 4 large boxes of collectibles to go through. Found the Paul Krause autographed football, and the Randy Moss / Daunte Culpepper cub foods bobbleheads(kinda worthless, but still in package).
Best find was a few complete sets of the upper deck initial football sets, and the Upper Deck Randy Moss card.
Also a “Last Game at the Met ” Pennant – my parents were at that game.

I now have a project from my project. I have to go through 4 boxes of collectibles and decide what to keep.
The football and Moss bobblehead are going on my Vikings Shrine for sure.

But collectibles are at least sometimes worth money.

I feel the same way VP when I hear that. I go to quite a few auctions, and comics can bring in some money. I’ve got a nice little collection myself but nothing worth a fortune. It’s like trading cards though, condition means everything.

My collection is pretty small and I need to get it organized. Right now, it has more value to me than any real monetary value.
And you are correct, condition means everything.

That’s your consolation, VP, my comics had all been read, they were all intact but they smelled and looked like what you would expect 40 year old comic books to look like after sitting in a box in the basement for years.

It’s making more sense now. They were Hugh “comics” and the smell was probably pretty bad.

We were fortunate with my parents as they had downsized so there wasn’t much to go through. However, when my in-laws pass, that is going to be a nightmare. My mother-in-law has sheds and sheds of crap on the old farm. To her credit, she has started some clean-up, but there is no way she will get through it all. Her son suggested we just light a match.

Her son suggested we just light a match.

That works, unless you are told there is some old antique worth $25,000 buried beneath it all.

My mother-in-law thinks that all of her stuff is valuable. It is not.

I think that’s mostly an old person thing.
My mom also thinks that. She saves and protects everything.

She stopped wearing jewelry because she doesn’t want the hospital to take it. She lives in an over 55 condo, and is not in a hospital.

As a ‘horder’ I understand. Something may not be worth 2 cents, but if it has sentimental value to me, it’s valuable.

I get that. I have stuff like that. My MIL, however, thinks that she has stuff that is monetarily valuable. However, even if it did have some value in the past, when you leave it in an unsealed shed that is leaky and has easy access to wild animals, it gets ruined and the value is decreased significantly.

Plus we are a little afraid to go into some of the sheds because they might fall down on us.

Yep….seen that before…my father in law had lots of stuff that “may” have been valuable. But leave it out in a leaky back shed for 30 years and its crap…but he still thinks its valuabe.

Speaking of matches, many locals here in town said the same thing about the “historic” Jordan Inn downtown. Sat abandoned for years, the owner refused to do anything about the deteriorating condition of the place, filled with asbestos, rodents, drug paraphernalia, etc…he died about three years ago.

The city even had a study done on what could be done – it was going to be $8 million to demolish it given the asbestos, $20 million to restore to former glory.

Then the daughter of some so and so famous artist started a grass roots campaign to get his largest painting removed – it was painted directly on the plaster wall, some 40 feet long, behind the bar…myself I thought it was a garish nightmare but then I’m no pinkie finger wine sipping art critic. That was going to cost 100’s of thousands.

Whole shitting thing burned to the ground over a year ago, city had to topple what was left of the exterior walls, whole thing sits as a massive pile of debris in the middle of downtown to this day because of the environmental concerns, and the wife of the owner refuses to take ownership and there is no insurance on the place. At least that took care of the whole “save the painting” movement.

Fuckers. I blame Ponder.

Surly, that is exactly where we are too. Hopefully a long way from death, but we are in the “It’s time to start getting rid of stuff phase”.

Trying to get more stuff out of the house then we bring into it.

I have been watching some collectible shows on YouTube lately. Kind of fun.

Man, why did I open any of my toys as a kid and play with them?

Biggest regret is the Tonka Trucks and the corvette’s with the car hauler. All metal from the mid 60s and I took care of my toys. Mom tossed those, and my Atari 2600. And yes, I had the ET game. Fucking hated that game, but I had it.

Not sure if he will even start(Risner). We will see I guess.
Maybe they saw enough of Brandel that they want more depth?
Or, maybe Brandel still sucks.

Thursday, huh. I came across my old Vikings Thursday poem the other day…

Turpid Thursday (sung to the tune of Manic Monday)

Six o’clock already,
I was just in the middle of a dream,
The Vikings won a Super Bowl,
And named the planet’s most awesome team,

But we can’t be great,
No matter how much our QB’s paid,
These are the days,
We wish Teddy didn’t have skinny legs,

It’s just another Turpid Thursday,
(Skol-Skol)
I wish it was Sunday,
(Skol-Skol)
That’s Zimmer’s fun day,
(Skol-Skol)
His we-need-to-have-more-runs day,
It’s just another Turpid Thursday…

Have to catch an early train,
To get to US Bank by noon,
Ziggy goes by aeroplane,
Paid for by stadium boons,

Well, it takes me so long
Just to dry my Vikings tears,
Blame it on the lack of rings,
Packers have four of those things…

It’s just another Turpid Thursday,
(Skol-Skol)
I wish it was Sunday,
(Skol-Skol)
That’s Vikings fun day,
(Skol-Skol)
Their we-almost-just-about-won day,
It’s just another Turpid Thursday…

Blame it on bad luck,
But its been more than 40 years,
All of the drafts,
Why’d the Vikes pick so many busts?
To blow it,
Doesn’t it matter?
That our hopes exist to be dashed?
Morale is down,
Spielman tells us in his boardroom voice,
“Don’t worry, next year we’ll make some noise,”
Time it goes so fast,
When your team’s a losing one…

It’s just another Turpid Thursday,
(Skol-Skol)
I wish it was Sunday,
(Skol-Skol)
That’s my numb day,
(Skol-Skol)
My Vikings-Super-Bowl-wins: none day,
It’s just another Turpid Thursday…

Lol I had that same thought yesterday when I saw it in the news. “There’s a women’s hockey league?”

That’s sexist.
Minnesota has had female hockey for 20 years? at the UofM.

This is the inaugural year of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). Just saw it on the news and had to post it. Minny finally gets another Championship. Too bad it is another Women’s sport…
