VIKINGS NEWS – Well, it was not pretty, but the Vikings got a win! Preseason, but still a win. A few thoughts…. Darnold looked very good at QB. Small sample size, but he played very well imo. JJ had a good first pass, then a few oops moments. I feel he ended strong with two really good td throws, and will learn to lead his receivers and watch for NFL speed in the backfield. I loved the scramble for a first down. That would have been a sack for sure with Kirko back there. Our backup RBs looked good. Our backup O Line looked decent, and that was shocking. Nailor looked very good as well. Defense? Ugh. A few really good plays, and Turner looks like the real deal. However, that secondary needs help NOW. This team has some young talent, and will score some points. I hope the defense can improve. I know this was preseason, but man….learn to tackle. Special teams was not special, but the FG to win the game was a nice surprise (Who else expected the kick to be wide left?).

The Rams QB is worse. Some guy named Stetson Bennett. Just threw his third interception. All really bad throws.

They loaded the bases with no one out.
Then managed a strike out and a double play to end the game.
End up with a split of the 4 games at home,

I actually was checking the score and saw bases loaded with nobody out. Started watching with gamecast and they got three straight outs.

I’ll give you some street cred for owning up to it though.
That brings up bad memories of a slow pitch game a couple years ago. We were down by 1, bottom of the last inning, no ours, runners on first and second and hit into a triple play. Only triple play I’ve ever seen. To make it worse it was the end of the year and winning that game would have given us the league championship for the first time.

The rookies are getting some good work in this weekend.
I don’t mind Bo being good.

Laughing, I get it. I did think Bo was in the top 3 of the QB’s available in the draft. Honestly had a much lesser opinion of Maye.
Ditto on Maye, not so much on Nix. He could be OK, but I didn’t see the star power and ability. Good thing ass face “tricked”is into taking JJ.

The only Vikings kicker that I can say I don’t have that feeling would be Fred Cox.
Im sure he missed his share, but I just don’t recall many “game on the line” misses.
After Gary Anderson hitting every single kick during the ’98 season only to miss a critical FG in the NFC Championship game I would even be nervous with Fred.
Not on Fred, just due to the PTSD.
I think all the rookie first round QB’s have played well. One exception is Drake Maye, but he plays on a pretty shitty team.
I am looking forward to watching Bo Nix today. I wanted the Vikings to get Daniels/Maye/Nix in that order. JJ was not on my wish list until a few people on this site convinced me he would work out.
Obviously a very small sample size, but I think any of the top 6 would work out here, and I am very glad the Vikings got JJ.
It might turn out to be as good as ’83, John Elway, Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Ken O’Brien, Dan Marino.
As long as JJ reaches his potential I don’t really care about the rest of them. I do admit I would be happy to see The Cry Baby fall on his face.

Watched several games using my NFL+ subscription. Saw lots of bad football, but I’m telling you what. The Texans offense is a joy to watch. The QB hits his back foot and that ball is out. Really good. Timing routes that just eat up the defense. Doesn’t matter who is under center.
Also saw a LOT of QB’s running for chunk yardage. Easier to be a running QB, than a passing QB.
As JR said, our defense has to be better, and maybe they will be.
Adding Gilmore may, probably will, help the secondary but that doesn’t negate the need for some consistent tackling.
That 4th down play where the QB broke two open field tackles on the way to the first down was maddening.
Actually I guess the tackling was consistent, consistently inconsistent.
I think the “no tackling” rules in training camp the players association negotiated, hurts defensive players. Tackling across the NFL isn’t great anymore. I was very disappointed (like you) on that 4th down play. It was truly maddening.
Seems like they could incorporate ‘tackling dummies’ that don’t violate the rules or some such.
They probably do some of that already but I am thinking more dummies that can be manipulated to simulate a ‘juke’, spin or other tackle avoidance moves.

NLV. Not sure about this at this level. You can have a lion and not feed him meat for a week or so, and then throw him some – pretty sure he knows what to do.

There is one universal truth about good defense – all good defenses are physical and hit hard. When is the last time you saw our defense play like that.

I saw a play yesterday when the defense laid out a TE aggressively with a hard hit.
Of course it was just 1 play and by a guy not likely to make the 53.
I saw the ‘;one ‘ play also. Need to see much much more of that.
Nice game summary. Believe we will be able to pass the ball against most defense, whoever is the QB. Running game – still to be proven.
Defense it’s just not there. I personally think it’s both a talent and scheme issue. And really no excuse for bad tackling.
