My experience was with CSM’s from Infantry and Airborne outfits. Most were battle tested and pretty squared away ( and tough as hell).
Near the end, did see a couple quota selections but you could tell immediately.
I think that CSM was one of ‘Mcnamara’s 100,000’ from 1966 when he lowered standards to meet the quota required for Vietnam.

The news about McCarthy is sad for sure, but let’s face it. KOC probably wasn’t going to start him this year unless he had to, or we were so far out of the playoff race it didn’t matter who we started. Sam Darnold will or will not be good enough to give us a chance in our games, and that was the case last week, last weekend, and right now. The plan was to ride with Darnold till McCarthy was ready, and guess what? That plan hasn’t changed.
The season is nigh, and we will cheer for the Vikings no matter what.
I had just hoped (hey I’m taking a cue from you, NLNVF practice is practice only real test is real snaps) that JJ would get some game time snaps to start warming up the processor, say while Darnold is evaluated for concussion or the like during a game.
Yes, or if we were so far ahead in the 4th quarter he could come in and run a few series. As McCarthy said, Amor Fati… take the good with the bad. Keep rolling, keep moving forward, and keep fighting.
I never expected JJ to play much this year, but I was hoping he could at least do the development thing in practice. Hobbling around will set him back.
No doubt, but he realistically has a long way to go to be a quality NFL QB. He can work with the OC on the game planning, see how each defense is analyzed and prepared for, he can do the film study and learn how opponents approach the Vikings offense. He can learn the 400 or so reads and adjustments he needs to master completely, to be a complete NFL QB. He can work through the after game assessment (watch the tape) to see where the QB failed, and also where he did good. He needs to continue to participate in everything he can, and develop mentally, while his body recovers.

Darnold sucks, if the Vikings see any good it’ll be because of the run game and defense
Ben, I agree on Darnold. He’s never been able to get it going, and keep it going. For every good game he has, there’s 5 or 6 bad ones.
Obviously the team will have to carry Darnold, and the running game and defense will have to do that. Darnold does have a good arm though, and has the ability to make some big plays. Those long, sustained drives we were accustomed to seeing with Cousins probably aren’t going to be a staple this year. The grit of the team will be tested, and that will be what we’ll watch for. The cards are stacked against us, but remember this. When things look grim, be the Grim Reaper.
Those long sustained drives weren’t as frequent as you are imagining. Heres where the Vikings ranked in 3rd down conversion percentage per season. A good sign of being able to sustain drives and ultimately score a TD and not settle for FGs.

2019: 9th
2020: 16th
2021: 26th
2022: 11th
2023: 18th
Average: 17th.
And I wont buy the “he didnt have a running game” excuse. Its funny how what we want to believe is true clouds what actually is.

You bring to mind two thoughts – conflicting ones.
First, intuition would tell me 3rd and short is easier to convert than 3rd and long. ‘something’ has to proceed getting to third and short.
Now the conflicting thought. Read actually before last year, we had the poorest conversion rate in the league an 3rd and 4th less than 2 yards, couple of years running. Basically we got stuffed more than anyone in the league.
Just seems to me we have our best drives by not getting to 3rd downs.
That 3rd down percentage doesn’t mean we didn’t have long sustained drives son. We often made our first downs on second down and first down, vice 3rd down. We had more 10+ play drives from 2018 to 2022 than all but 6 other teams. Also we had the 6th most number of drives that ended in TD’s during that time.

Just based on my experience.
I tore my meniscus. Not much pain but didn’t feel quite right. Next day and following some swelling, tightness and then pain came along. At that point, with a lot of ice, moderate PT, a brace. I could have probably played football in a week or so.
But, For my knee, that wouldn’t have been the smartest thing to do. JJ is young with a bright future.
Get it fixed and fixed correctly for the long run..
How well can one determine extent of meniscus injury via MR? Does team ortho already know extent?
MRI is about 90% sensitive for detecting medial tears and 80% for lateral. I assume he had a positive McMurray on physical exam and the follow up MRI detected a tear. Certain types of meniscal tears are well demonstrated by MR and some are a little more occult. Usually the orthopedist has a very good idea what they are going to see at arthroscopy based on the MRI – the role of the radiologist is to describe the nuances of the tear but more importantly ancillary findings such as meniscocapsular separation, scaffold injury, peripheral red zone involvement, etc.
Clearly he’s not familiar with Vikings’ history. Ooopppsss…I gotta run, Sharrif Floyd is on line 1.

Thanks a lot, now when I tell a patient they have bone on bone degenerative changes I’ll be thinking of Ben making the beast with two backs.
I ‘had’ bone on bone and had to get knee replacement.
Usually, and probably more so back at my time. after 30 they simply wouldn’t do a repair as the meniscus gets so little blood the repair hardly ever works. thus, you go shave and trim and you could count on arthritis right there.
will simply say the bone on bone is big time painful.
Ouch.
How is the replacement?

The replacement is great. Initial PT is really hard but then you’re almost back to normal with NO pain. For me, at this point just means no running. Can do most anything else I want.
If someone gets to bone on bone, I’d recommend get it done ASAP.

Orthopedic has to go through the hoop of a Cortisone shot and PT before the MRI.
It definitely has helped, but if I really push using it, it still hurts. I have the follow up on the 29th.
Have had meniscus issues (and a knee replacement as a result).
Isn’t there kind of a reverse severity playability factor here. If it’s good enough to be repaired, out for season . If it’s sort of worse, and in a bad spot, you get the shave job and can be back in few weeks. Downside of later, they will re removing part of the meniscus which many times leads to later problems down the road.

Just two days ago I was remarking I haven’t seen a rattler all year. Lo and behold I’m walking the dogs and crossing the ditch 150 yards from our place and a 3 foot snake startles me, coils up. I couldn’t study him with the dogs there so went and tied them up, came back with a shovel. At first I was thinking it was a gopher snake and just prodded it with the shovel, it zoomed like a shot into a nearby gopher hole and I saw the head and tail better, was a rattlesnake. Ahh, the one that got away. At least he was in the business of killing rodents.

So they say, but mine never have (fingers crossed). They have brochures in the vet office about the “vaccine” but there is no good evidence that it does anything, you would still have to administer antivenin.
I don’t mind them, every one I’ve seen is more interested in getting away from you, and they eat rodents. I was going to behead this one just cuz he was too close to my place. Hopefully he skedaddled.
There used to be a guy here that would train your dogs. I think the gist of it was that he would put a rattlesnake or two in a gunny sack and when your dog got close enough to smell and hear them just shock the hell out of em so they learn to go the other way if they smell or hear a rattlesnake.
Basically that’s what I do – if the dogs come upon a gopher snake or rattlesnake I yell at them to “get over here BAD BAD BAD”. Usually they totally ignore them.
My son was into that for awhile.

I went Frisbee golfing about 10 years ago. I had no idea of my capabilities. There were people up ahead, but I figured they were out of range. Threw it, and it actually went sort of straight towards them.
“Fore!” I yelled. I have no idea if that is used on Frisbee golf or not, but I figured I should warn them.
The Frisbee went in the trees about twenty feet above them.
They appeared irate from a distance. Later, when we got closer, I went up and apologized. Told them I just started playing. Had no idea it would go that far. Sorry. Etc.
They were total douchebags about it. I thought they were going to fight me. I just shrugged whatever and left them to their Limp Bizket lifestyle.
thankfully, if we ever encountered a group, they let us play through.
i’m more of a “brawn” type thrower. i throw it far, barely accurate. figure even if i’m 30 feet to one side of the hole, it’s better than 75 feet short.
My only other frisbee golf tale is that I once went for a walk on a course, and there was a dude out there with no shirt and a guitar slung over his back while he played with a girl in horn-rimmed glasses, and the snippet of conversation I overheard from them was exactly what you would expect.

I know I am probably the only one that feels this way, but I believe Hall is our QB3 and we trade Mullens for a 6th or 7th.
i’m actually in this camp as well. Teams are gonna value Mullens WAY more than Hall
Mullins is the more valuable piece for a trade, agreed.
Hall is the least valuable to have on the team/PS.
Keeping Mullins as insurance makes sense to me but I have been proven time and time again to not know what I am talking about.

Yeah if we cut Hall and #1 or #2 get hurt (#nojinx) then having Mullins as a #3 would be vital.
Otherwise we are heading to the 7-11 and seeing who can play some QB ala Dobby.

I doubt the soreness in McCarthy’s knee will be an issue, but it’s still a little concerning. He’s been running around in training camp with no problem, now all of a sudden it’s sore. Getting tackled for real, in a game, might have nicked him up a little.
Saw JJ stood in there and took a pretty good lick on one completion. He needs to start soaking in apple cider – with our guards and center, he’s going to take 10 – 12 shots like that every game.
I think most folks understand (especially if they watched the Netflix show “Quarterback”) that playing hurt to some degree is going to be part of the equation in the NFL. Every QB is going to get hit, and they are all hurting after week 1. Obviously the better your line is, the fewer hits you will take, but no one goes unscathed in the NFL.
i’m taking KOC’s comments about saying JJ’s knee soreness seems to be a pretty normal “sore after first game action” type sore and that they are being EXTREMELY cautious with him, as a good sign
I think so too Freezey, but I know KOC knows you can’t wrap a player in bubble wrap and protect them forever. Sooner or later McCarthy will have to play pretty much every game while hurting. Right now we have the luxury of letting him rest the knee, and let it heal up. Eventually, we won’t have that luxury though.
I do think they do ‘understand’ to some degree and everyone gets hit a lot. But if you play behind a weak IOL, you’re going to get more than the ‘normal’ amount.

Well, like I posted below, all players (QB or not) are going to deal with pain from the first game till the end of the season. Even before the first game, you can tweak something in practice that will linger all year. Comes with the territory. I don’t think this is an indictment on McCarthy at all.

Bow, I know you push this narrative as a way of denigrating Cousins, but it’s foolish. Tuesdays are an NFL-wide “day off” as mandated by the NFL Player’s Association. This doesn’t mean you’ll find all the players taking it easy though, of course. Many players use Tuesday as an extra practice day to work on conditioning, skill-building, or by studying game film.
Cousins works overtime on all those things “on his own time” though, and devotes Tuesdays to his wife. I think that’s a good thing.

Personally, I think Darnold’s problem is between his ears. Athletically he has all the tools, but he just seems to make bad throws for no reason at all. KOC may be able to get him to be more consistent, but as they say, a Leopard doesn’t change its spots.

In fact, yesterday I went back to the Arrowhead Pride archives at SB Nation and read the draft day takes in ’17 when they moved up for Mahomes…the experts said they gave up way too much for a project QB that had unconventional release and would get intercepted a ton. I think the best grade was a B-.
