I just heard something I don’t understand so would appreciate some help.
Appearantly the Niners just converted a large portion of Debo’s salary to signing bonus and thus freed up a lot of cap space.
And said, any team can do this and free up space s long as the owner is willing to write checks.
Is this true?
Yes, but that’s the old proverbial “kicking the can down the road”. By taking for example 20 million dollars in salary this year and converting it to signing bonus the cap hit is spread out over the remainder of the contract. So, let’s say that player had 4 years on their deal. That 20 million dollar salary this year is now only a 5 million dollar hit this year. It is also a 5 million dollar hit for the next 3 years though.
Also, let’s say the player was cut after this year, then the remaining 15 million dollars “accelerates” and there would be a 15 million cap hit next year, without the player on the team. That is what dead money is, cap hit for players not on the team because of signing bonuses and void years.
The signing bonus can be prorated over a maximum of 5 years. That is why teams will add a void year or two. If you sign the player to a 4 year deal but add a void year at the end, then the yearly cap hit is 4 million instead of 5.

JR, signing bonuses require that all the money be made available up front. Thus the reference to signing the check means the owner must have all that cash ready to hand over when the deal is made. Signing bonuses can be “charged” against the salary cap across the length of the contract though, which is the trick teams use to “free up” cap space. Using this cap management “tool” though comes at a cost, both actual cash doled out in that year by the owner, and long term building “hits” against cap space.

As I was poor and not on a per diem allowance from my employer we always just hit fast food places.

I kept waiting for the denouement to be “I learned my lessons, I’m here to be a better coach and do my best to not repeat my mistakes.” Nope.

That’s why I was always surprised many people here (even now) defend him and say they loved him as a coach. Seemed like an a** with no self-accountability to me. Just wanted to be crabby about everything, though rampant incompetence (commonplace now pretty much everywhere) can be incredibly frustrating.
Maybe manage the clock better. Maybe move into the present time and let your quarterback sling it. Maybe play or sign good players instead of sticking with your vets that stink (Barr and some others IMO). Maybe treat people with some respect (though you don’t have to be kumbaya like KOC). Guy doesn’t deserve a coaching job anymore.
I think Zim was a very good defensive coach, and after the previous coach, it was the pendulum swing to a disciplinarian. Some players respond to that, some do not.
I thought his press conferences were refreshing at first. But eventually he wore out any tolerance and just became a grumpy old man. While I resemble that, I want to see better out of a head coach.
2018 was the beginning of the end for him. In January he said he did not want to pay too much for a QB. Once Kirko was brought it, it was just a matter of time. Zim ignored the offense other than bitching about the running game.
Throwing it out there now. If anyone has tix they want to sell. Going to Stephen Wilson Jr. (best thing to happen to country music in the last couple years imo) the weekend of the Lions game in Minneapolis. Need 4 if anyone is looking to get rid of some. We are waiting and hoping to score tickets closer to the game at a reduced cost lol.

on a 3rd and 1, KOC decided to call a lateral to JJ who then threw it back to cousins for a 2 yard loss….
Trick plays are heroes or zeros situations. If I remember right our run game was shit because of a shit interior OL so 3rd and 1 for the Vikings then and probably now isn’t an easy running down.
So you have the number one WR in football, and one of the most accurate throwers in football, and then draw up a play for the WR to THROW the ball to the QB.

Yes. by “warm” I mean probably 50 degrees or a bit higher. The ice in the cooler melted completely, it was near the end of a long day of fishing, and both those things were awful.

If you want, I can detail all the games where Cousins and the offense scored late in the game to take the lead, only to watch the defense fold like a lawn chair, to lose the game. Also the times he led the offense into chip shot field goal range only to watch the kicker choke. THAT’s what happened all too often.

The Vikings under KOC the last two years, have traditionally been pretty strong on their first series of the game. Lots of long scoring drives to start. To me this shows a trend, and insight into how KOC prepares for a game. I think he really focuses on that first drive. He plans it and practices it, to get off to a quick start. I expect he’ll do the same with the Giants.

I won’t have a lot of time today to chat but thought I would share some good news. The mass spectrometer portion of Zeph’s biopsy came back. Anything under 5% means you are in remission. It sounds like his was under 3%, so that is great news. Now we are just waiting for the genetic testing portion of the biopsy to come back.
