Quick Thoughts on the Vikings

Those who know me know that I’m generally an optimist, so it probably won’t surprise you that I believe the Vikings will have a better year than most are predicting. I believe that KOC will help Darnold have the best year of his career (I know that isn’t saying a whole lot), and will be a significant upgrade over what the Vikings had at QB last year after Cousins went down. The team has improved their starting talent and should be better at most or all position groups, especially the running back position after having an anemic rushing attack last year. I’m excited to see Dallas Turner, adding him helped ease the pain of losing Danielle Hunter. New Vikings I’m most excited to watch are Dallas Turner & Aaron Jones, they’re both going to be beasts on this team.

I feel the Vikings also improved their depth significantly, we seemed to have far more talent at camp this year than we’ve had in quite some time, and they had to cut some very good players. We didn’t seem them picking through castoffs from other teams on cut-down day like they’ve had to do in the recent past.

They’re in a tough division, but I think the Vikings will be in the running at the end of the year. I predict somewhere around 12 wins for the Vikings this season. Call me crazy. Time will tell.

Fantasy Football League

Hey, this obviously was my fault for not getting this done sooner. I’ve gotten a couple emails from folks interested in putting together a last-minute fantasy league. I’m not sure how many players we need, but we probably don’t have enough…yet. There’s still time, and I’ll do what I can to help get it going. SoCalMinnFan suggested maybe having the platform auto-pick our teams for us since there isn’t much time for a draft, and that makes sense to me. We could still use trades & free-agent signings to customize our rosters. If we do it that way, I just need a few more pepole so we can have enough to fill out a league. I’m dumb when it comes to fantasy football, so if you have suggestions on how better to make it work, please let me know. If you are interested, shoot me an email at [email protected] or text me if you have my number.

The Latest News About the Vikings & Around the NFL

At Sports Illustrated, Justin Jefferson talks about what motivated him to commit to the Vikings long-term.

CBS Sports gives an update on JJ McCarthy’s recovery from surgery to tear a torn miniscus.

Media Selection

Here is an update on the Vikings’ injury report and a preview of Sunday’s season opener.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

KC clearly the better team, but not surprising. They have had the same OC and DC for years. The continuity is showing tonight. Mahomes looks very comfortable (as he should in his 8th year in Reid’s offense), and the defense looks polished in its sixth year under Spagnuola.

Jon Gruden was talking about week one, and the factors he thinks affect outcomes.

  1. No film
  2. Unscouted looks
  3. Conditioning and running full speed for 60 minutes
  4. Speed of the game and tackling
  5. Game day communications (both on the sidelines and the field)
  6. New rules, and rules that are being emphasized (penalties)
  7. Situational football (sudden change like fumbles or interceptions, red zone, third down, etc)

So if you’re Shane Bowen, the Giants new DC, how do you play the Vikings this Sunday? Bowen tends to depend on a ferocious front four and playing zone behind them. The Titans ranked No. 1 last season and No. 2 over the last three seasons in lowest touchdown percentage allowed inside the 20-yard line. In addition, they were No. 1 in lowest yards per carry (3.7) and No. 2 in run defense Expected Points Added during Bowen’s tenure.

Bowen doesn’t blitz a lot, but his front four is hell bent on getting to the QB.

The first week of the season is always a crapshoot. Teams come out and don’t quite know what to expect from each other. Players are trying to get back to playing fast, physical football, with real blocking and tackling. Conditioning comes into play, and also lots of penalties. If a team scores 24 points, they almost always win.

What did Cousins have to be confident about? His line? His running game? His defense? His kicker? A different OC and scheme every year? He had the weight of everything on his shoulders, and not much help. JMO.

All due respect JJ, you have no idea what it takes to be a QB.

Can recall a statement from a much broader publication where JJ said Kirk is our “dog.”
And then recall watching after a game, Kirk being interviewed, and JJ came up and hung chains on him and said something like he’s the man.

You made the statement “no policy discussion.” I simply responded to that
Do you not believe today’s politics is about ideology?
Is the “saving democracy” statement one of policy?
How about abortion, is that policy?
Or maybe, ” a flawed nation from the beginning” – is that policy?
Haha, like what?

No, neither side has any ideology.

What about abortion? It’s just an emotional topic neither side actually gives a shit about but pretends to to keep us divided and controlled. Don’t get me wrong there might some individuals on each party that actually care but the party themselves don’t except to appease and win votes. BTW, there is NO, NONE, ZERO actual biblical backing to the anti-abortion stuff. But that’s just a fact.

In the situation I presented was already in reference to that story/image going around about the Nebraska Walz not voting for Walz and people share that as some kind of point of view worth using as proof Walz shouldn’t be voted on by anybody. It’s a stupid nothing, and if people support that stupid nothing then we will get a lot more of that. Instead of pointing the actual reasons Walz sucks.

Best not to pigeon hole everyone. Some do care about policy, but for others ideology. Go green is an ideology. Limiting emissions is policy.
Now you may not believe it – but, both sides have rather strong ideologies and they are much farther apart than they used to be.
And I would suggest to you, what may move the needle for me can be different for you, and then again for the next guy. The Woltz thing may be silly to you and me, but if it’s important to someone else so be it. i’m sure there’s plenty we do they would think silly.

Edge, I agree with your general reasoning here..It was my point…these distant relatives don’t count, what counts is Walz’s positions.

Regarding abortion you are just wrong…while it is emotional to me, it is largely a constitutional issue….there is nothing in the constitution giving someone the right to an abortion – since the constitution does not address it, the issue should go back to the states – where it currently and rightfully resides….

Um… the bible also says there is a time for war.

Up until the 19th century the church took the actual biblical stance where there are actual examples where unborn children are treated more like property than life it’s why there were different punishments assigned to if someone did something to a woman that killed the unborn in her womb that was penalized at much much lower punishment and actually the father got to choose the punishment amount (but it’s a capped amount) where as killing a baby outside the womb is considered murder.

Close as in ‘closely related’? Doesn’t sound that close to me, not in touch with any of my 2nd or 3rd cousins.

Love reading GF’s optimism about the team up top. Really, why think about it any other way ( I’m a Cub fan remember).
But I arrive at it differently than GF does. I’m not as worried about QB play as many. Heck we’ve had good QB play for years and I don’t feel that’s our problem. Now, we haven’t had a good defense since 19 and our running game is certainly unspectacular.
To me, key to winning 10 -12 games, run the ball well and play solid defense. I know we can pass the ball – that’s not our issue..

A strong run game is every QB’s dream, and best friend. Yes, we need a really good running game. Something to date KOC has yet to produce. Third year’s a charm? Hopefully. What you need Sam to do is not turn the ball over, or make stupid mistakes that retard the offensive game-plan. You just need him to run the offense efficiently.

Cousins did his job in the passing game at a very high level, which kept us in games, and gave us a chance to win. Frankly, it was the only part of the team that was good every year. Our defense sucked, the running game sucked, the kicker sucked, the IOL sucked, so it’s almost miraculous that the Vikings were able to win a game.

I totally agree with this perspective JR. As much as Bow says McCarthy is a stud, he’s 3 years away from really being that. Cousins running the show for 3 years, while McCarthy develops (like Rodgers behind Favre) makes sense. Adding Dallas to Hunter? Wow. Don’t know about Hunter – he and Turner would have been great.
If the had signed Kirk last for for three at a cheap price (now), JJ only sits two at most. And since he’s hurt one, NBD.
Heard a recent claim by Rogers – said that time playing behind Favre allowed him to play against the first team defense in practice and that’s where he really learned to read defenses so well.
Broader point – we could have contended for the division this year, next year, and so on.

It’s true that if you underpay on the QB position (go with a rookie on a rookie contract) you have more money to spend on other parts of the team, but the hole there is, the rookie is going to play like, a rookie. Bryce Young, Trevor Lawrence, etc, and yes, McCarthy. That first year learning curve is hard on rookie QB’s.

They brought in a few corners and Jones as you note. Plus, the real gain in cap space doesn’t hit until 2025. Also, I didn’t say Kwesi successfully did it or will, but especially in 2025, the opportunity will be there. It also allowed the team to sign Jets and still keep a bunch of cap space. Darrisaw needs to get paid as well.

I agree, if we sign Cousins to the contract he wanted, we are not able to sign Jets to the contract he got. So we would be going into next season trying to keep Jets from becoming a free agent.

We would also be strapped for cash to sign free agents next season. As we sit now, this off season should be a lot of fun seeing how the FO uses all of that cap space.

What? If you had signed Cousins at the beginning of the 23 season for 37 for three years – last, this and next – you are strapped? You paid him last year and this really. That simply cannot be a back breaker. one season.

So, right now we are like $20 mil under the cap. If we had an additional $37 mil on the roster that would put us around $17 mil over the cap.

Aren’t you, according to Bow, taking a 30 mil cap hit for him this year now. If you’re paying Sam 10, that’s 40 for the QB right now.

Yes, and if we had signed Cousins it would be the original $30 plus the new contract. Unless they were to push it out another 5 years with additional void years.

The $25 mil we are paying Cousins this year was going to go against the cap no matter what.

I simply maintain signing him before last season (at that price), and keeping Hunter, but still drafting JJ and Turner, we would be contending for the division and not the seller. And could do so next year as well, and then have JJ ready to go.

I still say there is no way we would be able to sign Cousins, Darrisaw, Hunter and Jefferson.

Not for the kind of money they all got.

Hunter wanted out and I don’t think we could have made an offer he would be willing to accept.

True – but how much do we need.
Last year after fumbling away some games, we righted the ship. Played a very competitive game against Chiefs (bad n o call at end)., then beat Niners and Packers. How much better. or how much more do we need?
If we had Kirk (JJ learning) with Hunter and Turner (if he’s something) we can beat and or play with anyone in the league. And now we have a running back too.
And if we roll this year, we can the following and so on. There is no need to fall off to get better AND sustain that level.

Right, I expect an improved rushing attack. While QB play may take a hit hopefully the WR play can improve as well with Addison having his 2nd year and JJ keeps getting better, the younger #3,4,5 options should be developing… but this probably won’t really happen until Hock is back and Addison isn’t passed out at the airport anymore lol.

Agreed. Theres a reason the Steelers have always been right around 8-9 wins every season despite having Big Bens corpse under center and garbage tier QBs after. Solid run game, great defense and coaching.

I am in Colorado Springs, so I reckon I will miss most of the games, including the Vikings. Might be able to listen to Vikings on the radio on the way home, though. Maybe catch the last quarter on TV.

That sucks, I have the same circumstance in Tampa, so I bought the Sunday Ticket package, and I also have NFL+ so I can watch the all 22 version of the game later. It’s money, but I can watch the Vikings, and my wife can watch the Ravens. I still watch the Redskins too, though I’m not sure why. Obviously we have the Bucs here, and we’ll probably go to the Ravens game this year.

Question – I have the NFL package to so I can watch all the games. But, my wife tells me.I can’t see Fridays’s game as it is on Peacock? WTH – why did I buy the NFL package.

Well I know Peacock which is a subsidiary of NBC, has steadily wormed its way into the Sports broadcasting realm, and they’re garnering the rights to broadcast things like some Golf tournaments, and other bigger sporting events. I thought Sunday Ticket would give me all the games. Maybe not though. That would piss me off.

That is part of the asterisk in the fine print. There are a few games that are streaming only, either on Amazon or Peacock, where you need that streaming service. Lawyers already arguing about that.

Money well spent if it is something you enjoy!

I might actually be able to watch some games on the flight home because they have some in-flight streaming now that I think about it. A football game would be a great way to kill time.
