Wow, what a season opener! The Vikings got a huge road win yesterday as they trounced the New York Giants 28-6. The offense was efficient, balanced, and effective. They completed a 99-yard drive in the second half that really put the icing on the cake. Darnold was dialed in, and Aaron Jones was a beast. Both of these guys were solid additions.

The defense was equally lethal, if not better. Man, that was fun to watch. They harassed Daniel Jones all day and held him to under 200 passing yards with 0 TD and 2 INT, and the Giants only had 74 team rushing yards. The additions of Van Ginkel, Grenard, and Dallas Turner appear to have been wise investments.

It’s a win, so let’s enjoy it. 1-0 is much better than 0-1. I’m happy to see Darnold having success here, as I feel he’s been dealt a poor hand thus far through his career & want to see him do well. I’m stoked to think about the year Aaron Jones might have here if he stays healthy, and I’m extremely excited to see more of this Flores defense. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Word out of pukeville is Love is out 4-6 weeks.

The Green Bay Packers didn’t get the worst-possible news after Jordan Love went down with what looked to be a catastrophic knee injury. Love suffered a sprained MCL, which should sideline him for 4-6 weeks barring a miraculous recovery. Love was the Packers Plan A, B and C at quarterback.

Luckily their next couple games are against bad teams (Colts, Titans), so they’ll probably win those anyway (especially with the normal NFL ref help they usually get). The next 4 after that will be harder.

9 September 2024 3:20 pm

Well, we have our little 20′ van conversion (class B RV). It has a queen bed, stove, microwave, toilet, refrigerator. The diesel chugs along, actually get pretty decent fuel economy of about 20 mpg on the highway. Now my wife can get up and stretch or lay on the bed while we drive, got a place to poop and pee without having to experience the rest stop plugged toilet nightmare, and she can make me a cup of coffee or some popcorn while we plod along. Gotta hit the road by 5 am to drop the dogs at doggie hotel in Bismarck by 10 am next door to God’s country time zone, so will probably pull into a RV park and take a tent site somewhere around Fergus or Alexandria on the way out, and push back to Bismarck on the return.

I actually enjoy traveling in it, it forces me to drive like a RV driver and just let the nuts pass me by.

One thing that I envy of those of you that live in the twin cities, your laissez-faire attitude in traffic. I’m going to be driving my RV on the way to Door County soon, and am all amped up for creating diamonds with my anal sphincter and feeling an aneurysm pop when I’m bracketed by semis in the center lane when my wife looks up from surfing FB and says I think you are supposed to be in the right lane, the exit is right there.

Fargo and even Billings are now uncomfortable for me in the RV. The twin cities is next level.

Just the interstate. People changing lanes with no care in the world about the pickup and trailer next to them. Somebody from Big Timber was trying to get on at one point and never sped up. When the vehicle behind them (and in front of me) tried to slow down to let them in they just decided to stop halfway into the right lane of the interstate.

MT Viking

9 September 2024 1:59 pm

Oh no! That is the hardest part for me, I am used to driving defensively with a nice cushion around me, lots of potential outs if someone swerves into my lane. In the crush of twin cities traffic I am just one of 100 dominoes all lined up and completely boxed in.

I hear your jive. I dislike city driving. It is a skill, and if one doesn’t regularly practice it, it is a bit crazy.

Believe it or not, I have also noticed height makes it worse in modern cars. It is like the way I have to position the seat puts the door posts in a place that really limit my side vision. Since I’m tall, if my wife puts down the windshield screen, that takes away like a third of my windshield view on that side.

I never had that issue with older cars.

I’ve gotten somewhat over it, though. I take the David Groggins approach and figure it all just makes me stronger. Then I cry a little bit…

They go on to push the SB to OT. Sigh. It would be nice to have the magic beans that the 9ers have.

“Magic Beans”. 2 great WR’s, best left tackle in football, best running back in football, great schemer and play caller, two of the best LB’s in football. and a premier edge rusher.
And as a team has an attitude they will just best the asses off whom ever they play.

Nah you try to push JJ to the practice squad while you go with Darnold and Mullens, Packers pick him up off waivers and he goes on to a HOF career with them. We saw Mullens and Dobbs were making plays since our WRs can get seperation.

Sweets are my great undoing. I have to avoid them – all of my technologists are young women bent on destroying my “avoid the sweets” willpower – “Missy’s birthday is tomorrow – there are scotcheroos/nanaimo bars/root beer floats/chocolate brownies/cupcakes in the office”. When I successfully resist that temptation, then they start bringing them in to my office. Lately primary care providers have been plying me with sweets as well, looking for favors.

My epitaph will say something about sweets. Actually it better not as I want to be cremated and scattered to the winds.

I dolled myself up with a suit and tie and splurged on a shower since I had been fencing all day. Stood up there for a few minutes and showered them with compliments. Victory Monday!

🔨’s thoughts:

Great to hear the fight song early – hope it’s also often this year.

Schedule gets tougher – but so what? The Love injury gives an opportunity to capitalize. May not see him Week 4. Time to stack some wins.

SF is beatable. We did it last year. If Kirko can do it w/out Jets, Jets can do it w/out Kirko.

I think the Defense played with a chip yesterday – been hearing for over a year how DJones got paid because of 2 games against the Vikings in 2022 – Hitman, Metellus, Bynum, Phillips were on that squad and I think took it personally. It showed. I hope they play with an ‘F*** You’ mentality all year.

Nice to see an RB with good burst – AJ still has tread on the tires and gas in the tank – can’t wait until they start getting him the ball more in the passing game. Thought Chandler ran well too. Ham’s fumble was inexcusable.

Hitman’s 35th career pick. Keep stacking stats Harry.

Addison avoiding major injury is good – Addison being sidelined for a bit may turn out okay. We deep in the WR room. I think Nailor fills in nicely at WR2 and Trish Jackson can man the WR3 until Addison is healthy.

Johnny Mundt is less than impressive as a blocker.

Felt good to ruin NYG’s 100th year football party.

Many years ago I was hunting birds with my vizsla Zeus. He was a phenomenal birder. We were on a new section of block management and it was hot and dry as a popcorn fart. I was about half a mile from a fence and water trough where I was going to stop and let him water up, could see something set on one of the t-posts. I assumed it was a coyote carcass as that is commonly what is done in these parts with those pests.

When we got closer I saw it was a golden eagle. It was so still I started thinking it was some kind of taxidermy mount set there to keep away vermin. Zeus who was sniffing away in the grass didn’t notice the eagle until he was all of ten yards away when he crossed downwind of it. For a split second, there was a stalemate where the eagle looked at the dog “I could kick your ass” followed by the dog growling “Take a shot big boy”. Eagle reluctantly flew away cuz I trumped all by saying “I will shoot, and stuff your carcass under a big rock.”

It was amazing how big that eagle looked compared to a grouse.

Wyoming will periodically be allowed to let falconers catch golden eagles because of predation on sheep. It only happens every few years and Wyoming is the only state the feds allow it in. There are only around 30 or so people in the country who are certified to own a golden or bald eagle I believe.

There are some fun videos on YouTube where eagles take down bigger animals.

I was reading some history stuff one time, and the pilgrims talked about “eagle” attacks killing children. There is some controversy on what they meant by “eagles” exactly, as they were not operating under current naming conventions.

Then there is Audobon’s Bird of Washington stuff. It’s all kind of interesting.

There are some of them throwing goats off cliffs that are pretty impressive. There’s a couple of Mongolian guys using golden eagles to hunt wolves from horseback too that are pretty cool. Another cool raptor is a goshawk. They stick to the timber and have amazing reactions. I saw a video once where they stuck a camera on ones back that was fun to watch and there are other videos showing their reaction to getting through small places at full flight speed.

I have heard about the wolf-hunting thing. Must have come across that somewhere.

Hunting birds are spooky to me. I think it is because we had a rooster that terrorized me when I was a kid. If he ever saw me, he would charge me, and I’d flee. Something about those yellow lizard feet and beak coming at me…

I totally get that when SkolfromMT said those predatory birds can give a person a shivery.

Hawks often follow me when I’m digging ground in the fall and catch whatever mice or rabbits get scared up. Then they just stand on it and occasionally peck at it while it is struggling.

Hate watching that. Not a fun way to go, I reckon.

When I used to trap more frequently, had a bobcat set that a golden eagle got caught in (non target species catch is a sign of a poor set, mea culpa ) any how it had worked the trap free from the stake and was trying to fly with the trap on it’s middle toe. I ran it down and through my jacket over it, undid the trap. When I took the coat off its head the look of sheer hatred in those raptor eyes made a shiver go down my spine. It really gave me the willies. It flew off and appeared well.

I once went with my dad to check traps. He recreationally trapped during some winters when he wasn’t water fowl hunting. He once accidentally caught a golden eagle in a leg hold trap. It just barely had one of its talons. It was still very much alive and clearly very unhappy. My dad had to find a way to release it and was able to do so by throwing his coat over it, stepping gently in between its wings and releasing the leg hold. It was winter and you could see the steam coming out of the eagle’s mouth and he was giving my dad a death glare that clearly conveyed what it was the eagle thought of the whole ordeal. Anyway my dad was able to release it. And it flew away unharmed. The most impressive thing about it was the eagle had managed to fly a few dozen yards or so from where the trap was initially set. Certainly impressive birds.

For example, if I were to say something disparaging about you, perhaps even hateful. People could read that and they may have negative thoughts about you. then I take it down – damage done and no proof I said anything at all. Doesn’t set well with me.
But, appreciate your concern for my health. Have a big birthday tomorrow and still doing well mentally and physically.

Literally the only reason to constantly say that they hate Trump anymore at this point – everyone who’s ever heard from them knows they hate him but they just need to go go go and hope people will be like “OOOHHH SO THAT”S WHAT YOU MEANT OK I AGREE THEN”

I trade to change it for me, but couldn’t. I could be incompetent on my first attempt though.

I’m ok with that, but I don’t want to have autopick select Jordan Love or TJ Hockensin before other players.

One method I’ve seen/done with relative success – in an effort to combat everyone’s schedule you do a longer draft time limit and if someone doesn’t draft within their very generous time they get best available. So say we need this done by Thursday – have the draft ending Wed evening and give each draft spot a few hours to make a pick. It’s boring, and you spend more time looking at notifications, but get’s the job done.

Open to thoughts.

I was in the camp Sam was going to have a really good (CPOY, but DE told me he doesn’t qualify) year, and if we could run. the ball some and play defense, we can win a lot of games. Yesterday showed that and any win in the NFL is good.
Now, this week we face a “second” challenge. Passed the first, will see about second.

Thank goodness for a thumbs down, it’s been a while. I was gonna post how is it possible Trump keeps making it harder to vote for him with such turds running against him? The dude is so self absorbed and he keeps making it clearer and clearer he wants to win this time to be out for blood. That’s his number one priority in this election, to get revenge on those who turned on him last time. I know most of you won’t agree because Trump could be caught red handed murdering 100s of orphanages of babies and caught robbing thousands of homes of their guns with the intent to rid the country of guns, you’d still vote for him because he’s pro gun and anti-abortion (this is called hyperbole folks) (don’t be mad that I’m being condescending) (condescending means I’m talking down to you), but I don’t know what’s worse at this point. The big time phonies on the left who pretend to be good hearted, kind folks that are either too stupid to understand the ways in which they have negatively shit on people’s lives or just assume their constituents are too stupid to notice (it’s both) or the right with that commander in Cheeto that tweets very clearly his intentions with this election. He’s not even fronting that it’s about helping our country. He’s outright saying, his intentions is to win and get revenge.

Ahhhhhh, there we go, bring on the thumbs down.

Did I say there was an issue with wanting revenge or that having it your #1 policy for the country is revenge isn’t good. I am also sorry I started that post with being a smart ass and my real thoughts trickled in. So a fail on my part bigly.

Going after your opponents through lawfare is on Trump or being done to Trump? Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times. We must fight back, hard! This won’t happen as DC is full of really bad people, seems most repubs are closet dems and dems are mostly insane.
As dan bongino likes to say “repubs are not the solution to your problems but the dems are the causes of your problems.”
Trump isn’t perfect but I’ll take mean tweets and blustery talk anyday to people trying to taer down the country.

As you were.

What? Quit, this is such a one sided view it’s baffling people can be this delusional. I will say I about wanted to throw up listening to Walz say the republican party only cares about banning books in school about gay penguins and would rather kids get shot than have books about two male penguins. Yeah because the right is the side who wants to ban things and push ideologies through censorship huh? Well they do but clearly so do Dems. It’s just the usual situation, if it’s a core value of a Dem then it’s OK by Dems and not OK by Pubs and the vice-versa.

I was very pleased with how my back has been doing. I think all the time I spent on airplanes this week got to me. I was quite uncomfortable.

Coming back to Sioux Falls yesterday was nice, though. I was walking down the ramp to get on the plane, and an airline employee was coming the other way. She was about a five-foot black lady. She stops and cranes her neck to look up at my 6’7 face and asks, “Where you sitting?”

“I don’t know. Somewhere in the middle.”

“Come with me…”

She then rearranged things to put me in the exit aisle, so I had extra leg room. I could have divorced my wife and married that lady right there…

I really like John 5. I don’t think he is an elite composer because I find his solo work a bit…it’s like it is more a collection of kooky phrases and riffs than a song, but his showmanship and skills are elite and great fun to watch.

Yeah the show is at BIGS in Sioux Falls. I agree about his solo stuff. I respect the shit out of it but it’s not my thing either. It’s more of a bunch of guitar features. But the last time he played in Sioux Falls I heard he did a big medley of famous songs that was really cool. The sad part… you live closer to Sioux Falls than I do. I have to play and leave because I have work Friday morning. I will miss actually seeing John 5 lol.

The Giants D line is legit, (their secondary not so much) so id say our offense looked good, especially running the ball. Defensive success, yes, absolutely remains to be seen, they wont dominate like that every game, Daniel Jones will be an NCAA commentator in 12-24 months.

Yeah, I think we all knew/hoped Aaron Jones would be a good addition (miles better then Mattison), but we were hoping our line could gel a bit. And the defense was good (not Dumbatello’s defense from a couple years ago who made Daniel Jones look like Rodgers).

It seems like he had another old white guy LB come in as a band-aid at one point, but I can’t remember if that is true or I’m imagining it.

Seems like were were in flux at that position for awhile. I think then Leber came in and solidified it for a bit.

Vikings with a beautiful win. Plus, for the first time in the history of my people, I actually made it through the first week of Survival League.

Alas, some of our brethren were not so fortunate. The Bengals failed four players with a level of ineptitude worthy of scorn (I don’t actually know that for sure; I never watched the game, but for posting purposes, let’s go with it).

Freezeface has gone into that good night. Fair thee, well, mighty warrior.

Kirk is still good was also eliminated. I just Googled “Kirk Cousins” to see if such a name is true, and the first headline I saw was “Cousins disappointed with losing Falcons debut.” Nevertheless, the owner of the moniker is always good with us.

Little Skol was bigly let down the Bengals. May he use this disappointment to build big character and come back stronger than ever.

Finally, Trying to make it past week 1 was prophetic in their chosen name, as they did not make it past week one. They should feel no guilt, however. Once Burrows displayed his new hairdo, we all knew there would be problems there.

Fallen participants, we salute you!
