Happy Monday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion. Everyday you can join us for Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings talk, NFL news and updates, and all of those other things that you have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

Well, dang it, the Vikings lost their first game yesterday. The Vikings came up just short of a victory, as the Lions won it on a field goal with 15 seconds remaining for a 31-29 victory. We expected it to be a battle, and we weren’t disappointed.

I’d have loved to have seen our offense generate a first down to put the game away once they went up 29-28, and I also would have loved to have seen the defense put a final stop together instead of allowing them to march down for the go-ahead FG. I hate “prevent defense”, I hate it with a passion, and that’s what the final drive looked like. The team has some things to work on, some things to clean up, but they’re still one of the top teams in the NFL, and it’s still gonna be a fun year.

I think the two best teams in the NFC played today, one of them barely won and the other barely lost. They’ll meet again on my birthday in week 17, the final game of the season. The Vikings could give me a very nice birthday present that day by securing home field advantage throughout the playoffs, because I’m fairly certain that’s what the stakes will be for that game. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

They need to narrow the field goal posts. There are too many long field goals happening. It needs to be more of a challenge.

Some Kickers have gotten impressively good at long field goals. Good that we seem to have one of those.

Ravens had 1st and goal at the 8. Incomplete pass left them with 2nd and goal at the 8, then suffered 3 consecutive 10 yard penalties to be 2nd and goal at the 38. Two holding calls, and an offensive pass interference call. Ended up making 28 yards of it back and got to 4th and goal from the ten. Easy field goal from there. Ravens fans not happy with the refs.

So since I can’t tell her that the Vikings are more important than she is I just need them to win.
Looking good is much further down the list of importance.

HUNViking
Reply to  MT Viking
21 October 2024 3:48 pm

Social security takes a significant chunk out of my salary every month, so I figure that I’ve paid much more into the system than I ever got out if it, or ever will get out if it.

On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about hospital bills and such when necessary procedures have to be done. Don’t know which system is better…

Still, taxation is theft, mostly.

I’ve lived and worked in health care in both systems. I know which one I prefer. I don’t know about the Austrian healthcare system but I can say that Medicare for all would be a disaster in the US…and that Americans are nowhere near prepared for what healthcare would look like under a single payer system.

I used to worry a lot about such things, but as time has gone by and I’ve been able to do some saving I’ve reached the point that I work because I love my job. If something should change that I no longer love my job (especially if healthcare became a right instead of an insurance benefit) I’d just retire and do something else I enjoy, like studying female surface anatomy.

Being aware of the fact that most of the money I’m forced to hand over to the system is used for people that never paid a single cent into the system (free healthcare for illegal immigrants, for one) and for other purposes I don’t agree with I’d prefer the insurance system.

This system over here does have a few merits, but the negatives far outweigh the positives.

Of course more than half of it goes to illegals, because there are no illegals in the commie utopia they are building over there, so everybody can apply.

Between this, spending billions on “foreign aid” and the deindustrialization the “green” party and their socialist accomplices are perpetrating it’s only a question of time until that county explodes. The rest of Europe will follow, I’m afraid. Memo to self, need to buy more ammo.

Joel Bitonio is 33 years old and they would take over 20mill in cap hit to trade him. Wyatt Teller is 30 and would be around the same dead hit. Nobody is taking on 20 mill in cap hit to trade a guard when they are playing with backup QBs for the remainder of the season.

I’ve given you the only options I’ve seen and none of them are good. I think they’re stuck and need to hope Risner is better enough. I don’t have time to go through every contract, but the pickings are slim and I’m not convinced bringing in a guard midseason is going to work anyway. It’s not the same as adding a RB or WR.

I think they’re best options are going to be in house. They might not be great options, but I don’t think they’re going to find somebody on the trade market. They would be better off looking for another RB or a DT.

Invited some friends over for the game, did up a batch of beef short ribs in the Dutch oven. We have ROKU and local antenna TV. I was happy to see the game scheduled for Fox – that’s one of the local channels that comes in the best.

5 minutes before the game started the TV screen went black. Started switching through channels – every antenna channel came in except the Fox channels (48.1, 48.2, 48.3, etc). Even channel 8 out of LaCrosse (with the FTP game) came in clearer than when the Vikings are broadcast on it.

Friends got to watch FTP, I got to squint at my cell phone streaming the Vikings on NFL+.

Vikings Week 7 OL PFF grades (overall/run block/pass block/pressures allowed):
Darrisaw 62.1/56.6/85.8/0
Brandel 67.4/61.4/74.9/1
Bradbury 56.0/69.6/37.6/4
Ingram 38.0/43.7/64.8/1

Well, that sucked. Gifted at least three points to start the game thanks to the worst executed fake punt – although give ST credit for being prepared.

The defense had no answer – four straight TD’s. I think Goff completed 18 of his first 16 pass attempts. I don’t think Darnold completed a pass to anyone not named Jones, Jefferson or Mundt. WTF was with all the offensive line penalties? Then you get a scoop six late to take the lead and still can’t stop ’em.

Sigh. This is when I would have started itching to get McCarthy playing time, but no the Vikings first round picks always miss at least one of the rookie seasons to injury.

We will lose in a couple of nights. No concerns about that…but need to right the ship against the Colts.

Wonder how many balls kumbaya Kevin gave out?

Context as mentioned below…I never thought we’d be 5-1, or 5-2. Plus, I hate to say it, but there is no team beating KC for their swifty threepeat. Let some other fanbase get that heartache.

The Lions were ready with quick hits for all of the blitzes. Goff is good at hitting the hot routes.

Flores took too long to switch to four-man pressure. Greenard was doing fine on the edge, and Flores needed to trust that more. More people in coverage means more contested catches (was there even one yesterday?) and more people to limit YAC.

Vikings had plenty of chance to win the game yesterday, but it sure seems like there were several questionable calls and no-calls that went the way of the Lions (“hold” on Ingram getting bulldozed and then the guy dives into Darnold’s knees, Pace getting blocked in the back into Goff’s legs and “roughing” from that, the offsides on Addison was borderline, and Sewell had a big hold on a TD for the Lions that wasn’t called). I didn’t see the challenged fumble, but some said that should have been Vikings ball as well. It seems like the refs have been trying to sabotage the Vikings the last 3 weeks (definitely in GB, possibly vs Jets, and maybe this week as well).

I just don’t see the NFL allowing the Vikings to win a SB, even if they get there. Gonna get screwed by bad calls even if they play well enough to win. We saw that in 2009 NFC Championship, we saw it with the Pearson push off, for goodness sakes we see it every year against the Packers and other teams. I find it hard to get my hopes up when history continues to point towards loss for one reason or another.

I will have to make a smaller batch next time just for me and really crank it up. Chili itself turned out really good. I ended up entering a crock pots worth of it into a chili contest at a bar down the street from me. Ended up taking 4th out of 8. The ones that got 1st and 2nd were good but kinda meh to me, and were tangy/sweet which I found was weird. ND tastes buds dont like heat and mine was the only one that had some kick so, I guess I might have to play to the crowd if I enter it again. Oh well!

It’s no secret that Ingram sucks.

It’s my understanding that with Risner about to return that if they wanted Ingram out of the lineup they would move Brandel to right guard and insert Risner at left guard. Apparently although left guard is the natural position for Both Brandel and Risner, Brandel is more able to flip to the right side.

My question is,
Is it worth messing the O-line to that extent on a 5 and 1 team and risk making things worse?? I think Ingram is so bad that it is worth the risk.

Brandon Scherff is in the last year of his deal with the Jags so maybe could get him for a late round pick. Something called Jermaine Eluemunor might be available from the Giants. Here’s the best options as CBS sees em. 2 guys that have been benched and a backup.

   Nate Davis
   Daniel Brunskill
   Will Clapp

Davis, who signed a three-year deal with the Chicago Bears last offseason, was a healthy inactive last week. The Bears would certainly listen to offers on the veteran guard who has 67 starts to his name. Brunskill is an interesting case. He was demoted from his role as starter this offseason with the Titans, and has played just 24 offensive snaps in 2024. Brunskill has played all five positions along the offensive line in his career. Clapp is a backup guard for the Buffalo Bills. He’s started in 21 of 65 career games played for the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers.

Not to mention that O-linemen aren’t as easy to plug and play as skill positions. Even a more talented player might not play as good since there is no chemistry.

I’d bet the first backup on the Chiefs, Niners, Eagles are all better than Ingram.
And probably a few others.
Forgetting pass plays, a guard that simply doesn’t get knocked into the back field would be large for the running game.

And all of those teams think they have a shot this year and are pretty unlikely to give up talented players unless they are at the end of their contract and are looking at big money, which is unlikely.

Myles Garrett in the post game press conference says Cleveland fans should be ashamed…..

I remember the *aints fans cheering when Wade Wilson went down on MNF, prompting Dan Dierdorf to call the *aints fans ‘classless pigs’…..

And I agree with Myles. It is disgraceful and disgusting to cheer for a player to have an injury. No player should experience that.

5-1

I’ll take it. We didn’t get blown out – and it felt like we were going to the way the 1st half ended.

Dumb penalties, bad Darnold pick, gashed in the run game and a 55% blitz rate that didn’t get home – all adds up to the first L of the year.

We’ll play them again – hopefully with Hock & Cash back at full throttle.

Schedule lines up nicely – TNF won’t be a slouch – short week, we’re traveling and the Rams have a good coaching staff. Still like our chances of getting the W. Then a mini-bye and we get Colts/Jags/Titans – a chance to stack some wins.

Goose thinks we’ll be alright

Saw some good things, saw some bad. I liked that we fought back from being down in the 2nd half, answered some over all team questions I had. The loss is on KOCs 3rd and 4 play call with 2-3min left on the clock after getting all the momentum back. You need to stay in bounds to force a clock run/time out burn and or get 4 yards. You dont NEED 14 YARDS ON A THROW TO THE BOUNDRY. Stupid, stupid, greedy play call. As soon as that happened I knew it was game over. Frustrating. But an L can some times be good. Im not too upset about it. Would have been fun if 3rd Reichardt woulda taken a stab at the FG. I wanted it.

My thoughts from the game:

Van ginkel is very good, probably kams best acquisition as GM

the defense really missed cashman, especially in the run game and covering RBs

darnold was meh, especially in the first half, he is not the long term answer

Detroit won the line of scrimmage and as such, the game, Vikings blitzes didn’t get home, lions ran the ball for like 150, and Detroit was able to get pressure on darnold

So, before the season started, we had a lot of questions about the team, and really were wondering if they would compete. They are pretty darned good, and they can compete.

I rewatched the game, focusing on Darnold’s play. He didn’t play terribly. In fact, he made several very, very good throws, and several good decisions not to throw the ball. Even the interception wasn’t terrible. He just didn’t see the safety in the split second he decided to throw the ball. Also, KOC refuses to run timing routes. No slants, no quick outs. It’s been one of my pet peeves about him from the start. Long developing route combinations that force the QB to hold the ball, and read both the defense and the receivers. This is too much of a load on the QB. Give him some routes where he gets the ball out when his back foot hits the ground.

Good coverage? Noticed that as well – several times Sam looked like he wanted to take a shot and then pulled it down. His mobility is nice though. Several times yesterday he escaped a collapsing pocket and avoided sacks. He’s done that all season.

First, I wouldn’t say “many times”. I’d say a handful of times. Second, when coverages change after the snap, and the receivers are deciding where they’re going on their routes, that takes time. Then if they get it wrong and run right into coverage, it takes more time. Darnold is in his 7th week of live action with these receivers. He’s still developing chemistry with them. Finally, KOC has a penchant for running deep crossers, and I think the Lions really played those very well.

Obviously, Division games are hard, because the teams know each other so well. Tendencies, playcalls, signals, etc are all known. Sam though, is new to the Division, and he’s a little behind the power curve. Goff is in his 4th year in this offense, and of course playing against us. He is way ahead of Sam on every level. Flores came in last year and threw a lot of curveballs, but slowly but surely, teams are charting everything he does, and finding ways to exploit his tendencies. That’s what happened to Zimmer. Teams eventually deciphered what he was going to do defensively.

Disappointing loss. Not the end of the world if the team manages to clean up the issues that plagued them yesterday, but losing to a divisional rival at home still just sucks.

Worried about Darnold a bit, he looked erratic at times yesterday, offense wasn’t clicking. Defense would have done just enough to win, Cashman was sorely missed.

Would like to see Risner get a shot, would also help the offense if Hock would be finally ready to play. Still think it was a good decision to keep him on the sideline vs the Kitties, who knows if they would have injured him again given the chance.

Yeah, I don’t know much about Randle, but I hope that he has more “dawg” mentality in him then kat does. Kat is a great player but he always seems to be a little soft as a big man.

Well, a sucky Monday is upon us.
A poor play call on the 2 pt conversion, poor play calling when we were up with the ball to run down the clock to end the game, and bad defense on the final drive.

KOC and Flores better get their sh** together quickly.
I’m not optimistic about a win in LA Thursday night.

Fun fact:
If the playoffs were today, all 4 NFC North teams would qualify.

I feel the opposite about LA Thursday. I watched quite a bit of the LA LV game and Mattison was getting 3-5 yards every carry, it seemed. AJ may have a field day.

I’m just stuck in my past on 5-0 starts.
They don’t end well in Vikings recent history.

Hopefully this year’s team can overcome that bit of history as well. Or they are just the same old Vikings. We’ll find out Thursday night.

Rams didn’t look particularly impressive yesterday. Hope they won’t get too many players back before the game, on offense especially.

The Vikings are 5-1 when most would have figured they’d be 1-5, I’m not too worried the coaches need to get their shit together

True.
But the Vikings doom has been around for almost 50 years.
So, don’t just assume everything is ok.

Context is key. This is a better roster and coaching staff then the last 5-0 collapse in 2016 which is why I dont compare it. And the team before that 2009, lost 4 games that year too. We’re going to lose. The way we lost doesnt spell doom for me yet. We need to win an ugly one against the Rams on a short week.

Agreed. I’d feel worse if we’d gotten boat raced. We didn’t. Opportunity was there. They got down and came back – losses can sometimes have a galvanizing impact on the whole season. Lot of positives to take away.

Let’s hope yesterday’s L will have this effect on the team. We should be more under the radar again at least, now that we got our 1st loss of the season out of the way.

Lions can have all the hype, Campbell is going to Campbell eventually, and it’ll cost them games. Just the question if the refs will keep on carrying the Lions like they did in their game vs the Cardinals.

The rest of the NFC North has some of the toughest remaining schedules in the league and the Vikings have one of the easiest. There is not a game left for the Vikings that is not winnable and most of them are should wins.

We should be in a favorable position for the rest of the season. Just cautious because we know what usually happens when the Vikes start 5-0…

I am not too upset about yesterday’s loss. Frankly, we deserved to lose. Plus, Lions are a formidable team. They helpfully pointed out we have things to clean up. Otherwise, they will obliterate us next time they play us.

I can’t believe we pulled out the old run-run-pass tactic when we got the ball up by one with like 5:50 left. You can’t go into clock-burning mode with that much time left. You absolutely have to score. There was an eternity of game left.

It is 2024. Modern NFL offenses only need 30 seconds to get into field goal range in end-of-game scenarios, especially now that 60-yard field goals are in play.

i hated losing for 3 reasons…

our defense, while they got gashed, made the play we needed to give the offense a shot to ice the game, and KO and the offense ended up choking….

my neighbor is a huge lions fan (from michigan originally) so he was being a total annoying dbag after the game.

i so badly want the vikings to be the team that wins the huge games we need them to win. granted, we have won some big games against big teams, we always seem to just barely give it up at the end…

let’s hope this lights a fire

Goff was an absolute assassin. What did he miss? Like two passes? That is tough for any defense.

It is kind of impressive that we had the chance to win.

Yes, KOC keeps making these boneheaded “mistakes” in critical situations, admits he makes them, and then keeps doing it. Perhaps his biggest flaw, besides continuing to play Ingram.

Begs the question why KOC isn’t correcting that mistake since he seems to be aware of the problem. Head scratcher there.

Game reminded me of two things.

  1. The main reason I will not pay hundreds of dollars to see a game live. That must have sucked yesterday.
  2. How I feel every January when the season is over and once again the Vikings disappoint.

So, I am ready for that now. Team is still a season or two away from contending.

Please fire Ingram. Saw him on is back way too much yesterday. That is the most obvious weak link on the offense.

Defense had a rough day against a very good team. Blitzing is fine, when you get there. Pass rush failed, and Goff and a day.

He did a pretty good job of tackling JJets, on the trick play.
