I like KOC as Head Coach But…

I like KOC as head coach, but he calls some questionable plays at odd times. I like KOC as head coach, but he needs to design some quick pass plays. I like KOC as head coach, but I have heard several of these comments over the past 3 years. I like KOC as the Viking head coach, but I want him to be the head coach, not the Offensive Coordinator. Kevin was hired to coach the entire team, not lead the offense. He needs to let Wes Phillips call the offensive plays. If he doesn’t think Wes is up for the job, than Kevin needs to go out and find an OC that he believes can call the plays.

When you look around the league, the majority of head coaches that concentrate on their preferred side of the ball, usually fail at winning games. Zimmer was the same way as O’Connell except he called the defenses. We always seamed to struggle in close games, because the head coach wasn’t focused on the game, but focused on their respective side of the ball. This tends to lead to poor use of time outs or delay of game penalties.

With the exception of Reid and McVay, there are not a lot of successful head coaches that call the plays for their side of the ball. One of if not the most successful head coach, Bill Belichick, didn’t call plays. He managed his team, I am sure he had input throughout the games as to what he was seeing, but he let his coordinators coordinate. Most of the great coaches over the years have been game managers not coordinators. In my opinion, the head coach needs to be paying attention to the clock, the score, and the players on both sides of the ball.

I agree with alot of this, although KOC is regarded as an innovative offensive coach as well as a”quarterback whisperer” so not sure how much he would want to give up. I think a better solution (in game, anyway) would be to give the assistant head coach more big picture responsibilities (clock and personnel management). Don’t have any idea how feasible this would be, but more shared responsibilities seems would lead to better game flow. Or not, just my 2 cents.
