Vikings hump day discussion

Happy hump day, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

Not much new going on in Vikings land. Fans anxiously await Sunday’s matchup against the Titans where we HOPE that the Vikings offense can try to look like…….an offense. The passing attack last Sunday was not fun to watch, and with Aaron Jones nursing sore ribs, the team needs Sam Darnold to step up and take some pressure off the running game by getting the ball into the hands of one of the Vikings’ many playmakers (not the opposing team’s playmakers, thank you).

Vikings/NFL News and Updates:

USA Today asks whether Russell Wilson deserves consideration in NFL MVP voting. Apparently someone is hitting the sauce pretty early over at USA Today.

At ESPN, they’re looking at the 2025 NFL draft order, where the Giants and Patriots battle it out for the “top” spot. I’d rather be looking at the playoffs, thankyouverymuch.

NBC New York looks at key dates in the 2024-25 NFL season.

Media Selection:

Here’s a great song from the golden age of soul. CAUTION: NSFW LANGUAGE!!!

I always treat retail people (and food service folks) nicely, because they do a job I could not do. This song would be me as an employee, I’d probably last about three minutes.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.
  • Twitter sized version: Be cool to one another

Watching Darrell Green get interviewed on GMFB….

All smiles, talking about how blessed he is/was – face beaming when talking about his grandchildren (17!) and how honored he was that Washington retired his jersey – went so far as to say it might not have been deserved…..

It was.

One of my favorite players as a kid – known as ‘The NFL’s Fastest Man’ (allegedly ran a 4.09 40, routinely) but he was so much more. Great kick/punt returner. Legit shutdown corner despite being 5’9” who was also a great tackler. Unselfish too – played special teams throughout his career. Tough. Durable.

I think he was the greatest cornerback of all time.*

Got this Email unsolicited from a vendor regarding ACTIVE SHOOTER Training.

I’m calling because I thought you would be the best contact for me to reach out to. I wanted to present our Active Shooter Awareness program or ASAP solution to your team. It’s software based, so you can use it online or through our mobile app, but really it’s intended to help reduce response time if there’s an emergency that occurs on property. So I’m sure you have something in place to send messages. This is more potentially to augment and enhance your existing systems, although we can handle the whole spectrum of messaging need

My response.

We’re good…I have an army veteran with special forces training on staff that I have told to please carry at the office.

Nice, went through active shooter training, blah blah blah, if you can’t escape and must fight use something as a weapon like a desk phone or fire extinguisher etc. Thought to myself, wouldn’t it be better just to let me carry at work? CEO told me he’d fire me on the spot if I carry at work.

I got a message from my Mom saying she would not be hosting Thanksgiving this year. My family is complicated so I will spare you all the details. So I am making my first Thanksgiving dinner for my brothers family and mine.

Planning on frying a cajun turkey and making my own ham. Never did either one, I have made canadian bacon before, so I’m not jumping in too deep.

I am smoking a turkey in the kamado. Turns out great. We have hosted for years.
This year it is just my wife and I.
Both of my kids are somehow very liberal, and one now hates me for not voting for Kamala.

I mentioned that if Kamala had won, I would not hate them.
I do not hate them for voting for Socialism, why do they hate me for voting for limited government?

Seems silly but the spouse of one child is causing the major rift. Not seeing them for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

If this continues, I can move to a warmer climate. we are only here because of family, and if they are done with me, I can move.

Deep fried turkey is da bomb….and if you don’t do it right they are the bomb – literally.

Hopefully this is redundant information and you’ve already heard it (see what I did there?):

1 – Thaw out the turkey. You can’t drop a frozen turkey slow enough into boiling grease to avoid the explosion.

2 – Before you thaw it out do a wet run in the cooker – put as much water in the cooker as you think you will need oil, lower the frozen turkey in, push it down to the bottom (if it floats) and add or remove enough water so the turkey is covered by 1/2 inch of water; remove turkey, then place a strip of tape on the outside of the cooker to mark the water level – that’s how much oil to use.

3 – Inject marinade BEFORE lowering it into the oil (doesn’t happen often, but there are reports of it happening)

4 – If the weather is bad, avoid the urge to move everything into the garage. Keep it outside. Put an EZ UP canopy over it if needed – much cheaper to replace than a garage.

My daughter will be in Spain and the oldest son and family do not have money (that’s what having a kid that just went through leukemia will do to you), so just our middle son will be here. His wife will be at Disneyland with some of her family. That will still be about 9 of us, so we will have a good time (not a liberal in the bunch). My niece is making a ham and a turkey. And as I remember, they couldn’t bill for an office visit and the procedure during the same visit.
And, I had a knee replacement that wasn’t done in a hospital – more like some center for the doctors, and went home following the procedure.
Maybe it’s different in different areas.

So DEI.
Why don’t we get the two best qualified people regardless of race and gender.

If you can honestly say that if the presidential ticket for both parties were two Black women and you wouldn’t think twice that it is odd that your demographic (white male in my case) isn’t represented, then I truly applaud you.

I can say I would happily vote for them (obviously I don’t have a choice), but if/when it happens I would notice it. Just being honest.

I really like JD Vance, but I believe there are other qualified women on the Hill that would do as good a job as he will as VP.

I guess I don’t like the DEI moniker being applied to just trying to mirror the people you are representing.

When you decide someone should be selected due to ‘what they are’ that is the definition of of DEI.

Me supporting two black women? Obviously it would depend on who they were and what they stood for.
Condoleezza Rice and Candance Owens, yes I would vote for that ticket.

Now if you are looking at candidates and looking at balance for the ticket like east vs west coast, rust belt vs bible belt and male vs female then yes gender makes sense to be considered. But first you find the qualified candidates and then pick among them based on those other factors.

No one can convince me that Cackles was picked because she was the most qualified candidate.

Maybe just draining and the injection. Still lots of time. but menicus are tricky and easily prone to reinjury. Slow and steady best.

My first impression of eastern MT back in the summer of ’91, driving from Great Falls through Lewistown and Jordan for a job interview in Glendive, was just like that, only I would say I saw a car every 15 miles. I had to ahem drop a #2 and was hoping there would be a gas station open or rest stop near Jordan, nope. I ended up stopping at the crest of a hill so I could see if traffic was coming from either direction and squatting in the ditch. Had nothing to fear as it was still another 25 miles before I encountered a car near Flowing Wells (which is where the rest stop is if only I could have held out). Bottom line don’t leave Lewistown heading east without stopping to do your business.

We no longer travel with a candle….for you non cold weather folks, the purpose of a candle was to provide a little warmth while you were stranded in your car in a blizzard and to use it to melt snow for drinking water if you were stranded a long time….

We just decided it makes more sense not to drive in a blizzard.

I understood the purpose of the candle/chocolate.

My BIL described driving into the wind one winter and the engine temp on his car was dropping. Once he turned away from the wind it started back up.

The winter in ND is a whole other level from even the coldest days in the high deserts of SoCal, or NoCal or Colorado, or Korea, or Germany, or Washington State, or any other places I lived.

I have found out that a lot of the cost that goes into government contracts, as far as manufacturing items, is in the tolerances allowed. i had a friend that worked in a machine shop that had a government contract to build a simple part, but the tolerances were so tight that they threw away 90% of the parts they made. He said that there is no reason for the tight tolerance and they could produce the part for 5-10% of the cost.

Sounds about right. Somebody sitting behind a desk with no idea about the contract their writing or the equipment they want produced makes up tolerances. The EPA is similar in ways. Take water from a river, use it, put it back cleaner than when it came in, but in violation because going back in some irrelevant substrate is over an arbitrary limit set by a bureaucrat in Washington. The fact that the level of that substrate (pollutant in greeny world) is 4 times higher naturally in the river is no big deal.

There is definitely something to this, but military tolerances have always been high. Things are engineered to last, and remain in service for decades. Also, sometimes a piece is produced for the military, that is not produced for anyone else in the world. It fits into a specifically designed piece of equipment, and a manufacturer might have to retool an entire factory to produce a small amount of items.

I’ve had to deal with these kinds of acquisition issues in the past. That said, manufacturers will play up these circumstances to the max, to charge as much as they can.

I get the first part, but it feels like there’s a lot more of the second part. Didn’t Trump get the cost of a new Air Force One dropped by like 75% by calling out Boeing’s corruption?

This is small stuff. Take a look at the cost overruns of building new ships and aircraft. Breath taking!

One of the refineries here tried to cut costs on a turnaround a few years ago by replacing the contractor company they had used for about 20 years. When the turnaround was about a month over schedule with no end in sight they finally fired them and brought the old contractor back in. I heard stories of Tyveks being stuck in pipes, pickups disappearing, and hard hats stuck in pipes from the first workers. Another major hinderance at the refineries is the unions. Mandatory breaks and stupid rules about air quality testing and such. They make a 1 hour job take all day.

Believe most contractors actually do the original bid low as they know there will be thousands of change orders and they just cream the government there. Ships stsrt at 2B and end up 5B.

Then there needs to be oversight and penalties for the overruns.

It wasn’t 75%, but he told Boeing he owned several planes and they didn’t cost Billions of dollars to produce. The cost estimates to replace the two Boeing aircraft were projected at around $5.4 Billion, and Trump got them down to around $3.9 Billion. Some have argued Trump used some adjusted figures that made this deal look bigger than it was, but fundamentally he saved the taxpayers around $1.5B.

1.5B is hardly pocket change, except maybe in DC.
But isn’ the real point, this goes on day in day out in the procurement process of just about every agency on most all items procured. This is but one that he stuck his nose into.

The Federal Government acquisition system is overly convoluted in my opinion. It builds in exorbitant costs somewhat foundationally. The rules are meant to ensure no “business” goes to a relative, etc, so there is no conflict of interest in awarding millions of dollars to any particular vendor. Also, requirements to only make some awards to minority owned businesses, women owned businesses, Native American owned businesses, etc, can impede good fiscal practices.

Exactly and well said. Making a dent in that process will be a gigantic undertaking.

I would really like to see the AF and Army depot procedures updated. Every aircraft we got back from depot we had to go over with fine tooth comb. I worked at Army depot wow what a racket, really could use a big overhaul. Navy is just as bad but I don’t have first hand knowledge of that. Military owns the aircraft but has to bid against itself to work on them

The system will take a lot of fixing.
We will see how much, if anything, they can do it 4 years.

PA has counted 99.8% of the vote.
Casey is just holding everything up in order to stuff the ballot box.

Is Trump going to make Bongino the Secret Service Director? Rumors have been going around for months and seem to have picked up steam in the last day.
