Vikings off-season

Happy Tuesday (yuck), everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

Another day along in this off-season, the slow news cycle has begun for we Vikings fans. There will still be plenty of Superb Owl hype and news, but for us, it will be few and far between until March 12 at 3:00 pm central time, which is the beginning of the new league year. That’s over a month from now, thank God for ice fishing.

Vikings News

From Vikings.com, seven Vikings were named to the 2025 NFL Pro Bowl games. They also look at the wide receivers group in their 2024 positional group recap. In the Monday Morning Mailbag, they answer questions about the O-line and KOC’s extension.

NFL News

At NFL.com, they look at five factors that will determine Super Bowl LIX. They spelled licks wrong. Pete Carroll will build the Raiders around the QB position with Tom Brady’s help, and in Pittsburgh, it is Rooney’s ‘preference’ that they bring back Fields or Wilson and he backs Tomlin. Can he back Tomlin AND prefer that they bring back Fields or Wilson? Hmmmmmmm…….

From CBS Sports, Aaron Glenn is non-committal about Aaron Rodgers’ future with the Jets. I’m sure he is, since Aaron Rodgers is non-committal about his future in the NFL. Apparently, there are some people who think the Bills should fire Sean McDermott and a journalist needs to tell them that would be a bad idea.

Media Selection

I guess someone at ESPN really thinks the Vikings are bringing Sam Darnold back. I can’t imagine this happening. You have a team primed for a deep playoff run, and Darnold just showed everyone how he will perform on the big stage. But hey, what do I know?

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.

I had a chance to buy a large Tombstone Movie Poster (framed) with signatures of the 4 main characters back in 1999.
I had just gotten out of the Army and was still getting set up and so talked myself out of it. No real reason to have it other than I thought it was a great movie. It probably would cost 10x now what I would have paid for it then.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is once again trying to ruin everyone’s fun by targeting another American institution: Groundhog Day.

The organization seeks to do away with Pennsylvania’s tradition of using a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil to predict whether there will be more winter on the horizon each year, because it is somehow cruel to the animal.

Instead, PETA seeks to replace the famous woodchuck with a vegan option, offering to provide a “reveal cake” each year. If the cake is blue inside, 6 more weeks of winter. If it’s pink inside, an early spring is predicted. They say it’s more accurate, and better than frightening a poor animal every year with crowds of people and fanfare.

You should see my squirrel feeders. My wife was rather dubious when I put in the first one, why attract those rodents? She is now a big fan, as the dogs stare at them out the window all the time and she only has to make soft whispering sounds “get ’em” and the Labs race up and down the creek chasing real or imaginary squirrels.

So cruel of me to feed a family of squirrels for the entertainment of my dogs.

Heard something interesting this am listening to “smart” analysts.
Passing is now huge in the NFL. Yet last weekend, Mahomes ‘attempted” 4 passes over 15 yards. For the Eagles, don’t know Hurts numbers, but the Eagles have run for between 200 -300 yards on the ground for over four weeks.
Maybe, just maybe and I like KOC’s offense, we need to really develop a solid running game. Buffalo and the Ravens nun well too.

Reply to  JRobert
28 January 2025 12:57 pm

Teams are running more shell defenses to contain the deep passing game. Also running more nickel as a base defense. This is the evolution of the game, as passing became the foundation of NFL offenses. NFL teams throw the ball more than they run it. A few teams have remained loyal to the running game, knowing that late in the season, outdoors, in bad weather, you have to be able to run the ball. Mahomes has matured, and sees defensive fronts well now. He’s looking at cover 2 and cover 3, and knows the play is to the shorter routes.

JRobert

Now maybe just maybe. when our offensive line is getting eaten alive by the Lions and Rams, we can ‘calm’ them down by running it.

I don’t care what era you’re in, a strong running game and great defense wins Championships.

The Eagles epitomize this. Best defense in the league, one of the best running games in the league. All they need is for Hurts to not cock it up.

Then my GI system got messed up from, I think, the workplace banquet earlier in the month. The food was terrible, and I don’t say that lightly. The brisket tasted like it was smoked by cigarettes.

I felt weird after that meal and it started a domino effect on my GI. I can get colitis if my system gets the wrong things put in it. Usually, I am pretty good. It is usually catered meals that cause it.

I definitely do not have an iron stomach. My wife can ingest road kill. I need to be a lot more careful.

I will point out that NVDA is currently trading at 125.65, with a 52 week low of 60.70 and 52 week high January 6 of 153.13. Point being that if you are into market timing (bad strategy) and sat on NVDA January 6th you might be kicking yourself now, but really the average price has been pretty similar last six months, and if you bought a year ago you would still more than double your money (ergo if you bought $2,000,000 in NVDA a year ago you’d be cashing out for millions more)…oh and Uncle Sam would love you to the tune of capital gains tax.

To me that is non news. A lot of people started selling NVDA when it topped 140.

Seems like a good day to eat crow – me that is.
With three weeks left in season proclaimed (proudly) we could win the SB. Also noted if we didn’t, Lions had a good shot. And also noted the Packers when they aren’t shooting themselves in the foot, are very talented and can go far.
Thus, we had the strongest division in football.
Then the playoffs happened and all three promptly got dusted and most of the games weren’t pretty.
No more predictions.

Reply to  JRobert

I wouldn’t be all that hard on yourself JR. The fact is, we had a great season, and the Lions were great all year too. The Packers also had a strong year, and had a team that could have made some noise in the playoffs. The Redskins surprised everyone, and got the best of both Tampa and Detroit, before failing miserably against the Eagles. The Packers lost to the Eagles, in their first round, and we lost to the Rams, who then lost to the Eagles. I’d say we were the most disappointing team in the league in our last two games though. We only scored 9 points in each of those games, and pretty much got shellacked. We hit a wall so to speak.

Still, we won 14 games, which was a great run. Now it’s on to McCarthy, and with around $63M in cap space, we can make some moves to improve the lines.

They say the average person that would benefit from hearing aids delays seeking help for an average of seven years after onset of presbyacusis.

Two weeks ago, I bought a pair of backup hearing aids online for $389. Way way cheaper than my store bought ones (Sam’s) but after wearing them for a couple of days my brain basically retrained itself and they would work just fine for the average Joe that doesn’t want to shell out thousands. That being said, if you don’t have hearing aids bluetoothed to your phone, it can be hard to hear what people are saying as the microphones don’t pick up the sound of the speaker on the phone at all so you are just using your native hearing to hear someone with the phone at your ear. So that is when people with hearing aids use speaker phone. My fancy ones have bluetooth…the online ones I would have had to pay another $200 for the bluetooth option.

The scientist in me finds it fascinating. When I was 8, “they” discovered I couldn’t see the blackboard and was struggling with any lessons on the board. When I first put on my new glasses, I was amazed with what I could see.

Same when I first started wearing hearing aids – birds, leaves rustling, cars, etc…

I know my left hearing aid has been failing for over a year. I went in to the audiologist a year ago and said something isn’t right, I can barely hear anything on the left, she looked in the canal and took a pic, looked like otitis externa but may have just been the canal irritated cuz I was monkeying with the speaker trying to hear better.

Ordered the online ones to see if it was just me or if the hearing aid was actually going bad. I mean it had reached the point I could hear better without one in that ear. Of course they were delayed in shipping so we ended up traveling to Billings before they came. Stopped in at Sam’s again and said something is wrong it needs to be sent off for repair. She checked my hearing, unchanged, cleaned the hearing aid, unchanged, changed out the wire thingy that goes from the behind ear aid to the in ear speaker, BOOM loud loud loud.

TL;DR version my brain had adjusted to not hearing much from the left and recentered where sounds appeared to come from and the volume of sound. For the next 2-3 days I complained intermittently that my left side was way too loud and every sound sounded like it came from my left. Now my brain has adjusted and it sounds normal, wonderful again.

The crud you describe went through my family all fall and into Christmas. I periodically tested everyone for COVID, and never had a positive.

“They” say the rapid tests are still effective at identifying the new variants.

Yes, clearly one would rather be in bed for a week and coughing for another than get a vaccination.

I was mainly curious if this year’s vaccine had adequately covered the variants.

So by your logic, if your wife had suffered severe long term complications of influenza or COVID pneumonia, that was an acceptable outcome versus the minimal side effects of getting the influenza vaccine or mild side effects of the COVID vaccine. If that is your stance, I admire it.

I myself have never missed a day of work due to illness and skated through the COVID pandemic just fine. So for my n of 1 I would say vaccines work just fine.

When I developed asthma, my pulmonologist pushed me to get the Flu vaccine. As I trusted the opinion of doctors, I went along and got the Flu vaccine. Two weeks later I spent 10 days in bed with influenza A. I nearly died and can’t remember most of those 10 days. The following year, thinking I may have already had the Flu when I got the shot, and not wanting to go through it again, I get the flu vaccine. A few weeks later I spend 7 days in bed with influenza B, though not quite as bad as the previous year, but still quite miserable.

The vaccines they roll out every year are a crap shoot and I am 2 for 2 on them not working. I will never get another flu shot or will I ever get the Covid vaccine.

The Army required us all to get the flu shot, usually right after a Battalion Run/Formation on a Friday morning.
We all felt like crap by that afternoon/evening and it lasted all weekend. We were ok to work come Monday morning, the Army had that all figured out.
Last time I got a Flu shot I already had The Crud, I was hacking up stuff for months, still not over that crud. I have not gotten the Flu Jab in years nor have I gotten the flu.

Big changes are likely coming down the pipe for prostate cancer screening. More to follow but the studies that have come out in the last three years point to doing MRI in all men with PSA over 3. Significantly reduces the biopsy rate over just doing biopsies on all men with PSA over 4. I for one am excited by that as my PSA is slowly increasing and is just under 4 currently.

FWIW and you can call me in the pocket of big pharma (whoever that is) but we medical types are seeing much more serious viral pneumonias in the last five years. Not just COVID but RSV, influenza, etc…more people are hospitalized now for viral pneumonia than for bacterial pneumonia.

For me, the minimal side effects of the flu and covid vaccine are far outweighed by the benefits. I probably get some passive subclinical exposure to people coughing on me at work but 100% believe in the science of vaccines.

Circling back to that McCarthy news yesterday — it is interesting he has lost that much mass. His slight build is one thing that concerned me in preseason. And now he is 20 pounds lighter…

Pollyanna take: well, it is not like he can do deadlifts right now…

Negative Nilly take: the amount of mass he has lost seems a bit hinky with the state-of-the-art facility and trainers at the team’s disposal.

I would like to hear what MT thinks of this. Like when AP blew out his knee, I don’t remember him dwindling away that much.

Could not a non-issue. I don’t know. Yet, I am now leaning toward McCarthy not being ready to start at the beginning of the season. Might be the Daniel Jones show.

Reminds me, we went on a big island tour last week, our meal at the Volcano House had ahi as a side, every single person in the party didn’t want it so I had 9 additional servings. Mind it was just a small dish but I wouldn’t let it go to waste.

For the record the ahi was not very tasty, the stuff you get at the local Foodland Farms deli is much better (also far cheaper than if you get it at the resorts).

I was thinking that the knee injury would have a negative effect on his cardio and add weight. The additional weight could be muscle mass or just adding a bit of fat.
That is what happened to me with Plantar Fascitis, less long walks and restricted movement meant more weight. I tried to do more upper body but it did not keep up with loss of aerobic exercise.
Of course I didn’t have access to lots of experts giving personalized advice or state of the art facilities either.

I’ve had this very type of knee injury and year’s later got a knee replacement. It does impact cardio as most of the PT is very knee specific. But, there is a ton of upper body work one can do for strength and mass.
As I recall prior to last season, JJ went on a heavy lifting program and bulked up rather quickly. It’s very common amoungst lifters weight put on rather quickly thru training comes off just as quickly with any type on training interruption.

One would think that he had the time to do PT on his knee and still work weights on his upper body.
But I freely admit that I am ignorant of if/how the two might effect each other.

I certainly did both under the supervision of a PT professional, but not at the level JJ will receive.
Would note from my baseball days. PT’s are very careful with throwing athletes so as to not in any way “mess up” throwing mechanics.
Would guess by summer camp he has thighs like Hercules. After this injury they will wear out your quads.

While the OTA’s start in April, training camp doesn’t start till July. McCarthy should be able to “shape up” enough in the next five and half months to be ready to play. The jury is out on how well he will play. Certainly, the OC and HC can simplify the game for him by telling him exactly where to go with the ball after calling the play in his headset. “8 yard stick route to the left side, throw the under (out) to the slot if it’s not there”.

This kind of “pre-read” direction is how rookies get through their first season for the most part, and how they can appear to know exactly what they’re doing.

Having a firm grasp, and executing with precision under the gun, are two different things. Processing in real time, with bodies crashing all around you, takes a lot of time to develop. Remember, Mahomes said he couldn’t read defenses till his 4th year in the league. That’s how complex it is.

Twenty pound weight loss? If true, that doesn’t sound good. It’s normal to lose a little bit of muscle mass due to reduced activity but that should be mitigated by high protein diet. I mean 2-3% loss of body weight not that big of a deal but 20 pounds seems a bit much. Huh.
