Happy St. Patrick’s Day, I hope everyone has had a great weekend! The kiddos were all out of school here on Friday and today for spring break, and we don’t have a Daytona Beach up here in the northern Dakota, so kiddo and I decided to take an impromptu trip down to Deadwood SD for a hike & a quick change of scenery. We did a little hiking, ate some great food, almost got a speeding ticket (whoops), saw a couple of bighorn sheep, and had a really fun trip overall. We also spent some time this weekend getting our podcast launched, so hopefully you’ll be seeing our first episode soon!
Vikings Updates
In Vikings & NFL news, the Vikings picked up a solid addition to the backfield as they worked out a trade with the 49ers to bring in RB Jordan Mason. He will be an absolute beast, and a perfect compliment to Aaron Jones. Mason runs with violence and gets the tough yards, something the Vikings have been lacking basically since AD left. Mason has averaged over 5 YPC in his short career, and should thrive in Minnesota with their revamped O-line and elite passing attack. Kwesi is looking like a genius on this one, as he only gave up a 2026 6th round pick (the pick he somehow got for Ed Ingram), and had to slide back a bit in the 5th round. Great trade for Minnesota and a great addition to the Vikings backfield.
The Vikings are still searching for a quarterback to serve as QB2, and the list is getting smaller with each passing day. Cooper Rush, one strong candidate for the Vikings’ backup job, has been snatched up by the Ravens. Basically, the list is Joe Flacco, Ryan Tannehill, Carson Wentz, and Jameis Winston. Flacco brings experience that includes a Super Bowl win, but he’s 40 years old. Tannehill is a bit younger, but has never played at an elite level. Wentz and Winston both have youth on their side, but their resumes are shorter and would likely be less effective than Flacco or Tannehill in mentoring a young QB. I honestly think that the Vikings may make a trade with a team to land a better option to back up J.J. McCarthy in 2025, as they may not be happy with the free agent options. We won’t know until something happens.

Aaron Rodgers is pulling his annual “where will he go” drama, as he still hasn’t announced that he will be joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, even though everyone knows he will be going there if he doesn’t retire. Russell Wilson must feel like a booger, as no team wants to sign him unless they have to. The Giants & Steelers would rather sign Rodgers, but since he’s ghosting them, they have to wait. Wilson is obviously the #2 option for both teams. I’m not even going to repeat the ridiculous garbage about Rodgers coming to Minnesota, because it’s not happening, folks, and it’s not worth discussing.

He was gone, and now he’s back. The 49ers have re-signed FB Justin Juszczyk just days after releasing him, per Yahoo Sports.
Two of the Buffalo Bills free agent signees have been suspended by the NFL for 6 games for violation of the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs, according to Yahoo Sports. DT Larry Ogunjobi found out about his failed test after being signed, while edge rusher Michael Hoecht (not sure if he’s related to Ren) knew about the failed test & informed the Bills prior to being signed.

My brother-in-law who is 80 keeps bugging me to branch out from just selling books to try selling cards. Of course his reason for doing so is that he wants me to sell his collection of cards. I keep telling him no. Selling individual cards take a lot of time and need someone with some expertise. If he didn’t live so far away (Texas), I would send him your way. I haven’t even looked at what he has so I have no idea if it is any good or not. He tends to store stuff out in sheds, so they probably all smell.
If he’s interested in selling a large chunk of them, seriously, let me know. I’m not really interested in buying individual cards, more interested in buying large sets and then finding individual cards.
I’m going to see him at his grandson’s wedding this weekend. What do you pay for lots? You don’t have to give me anything firm, just a ball park and I can see if he is interested.

I actually think if the Vikings don’t sign Rodgers, he’ll retire. He doesn’t want to go to NY or Pittsburgh, and they are his only suitors (both have offered him a contract).
Pittsburgh has a history of winning, They make the playoffs every year, and I mean every year. They don’t look as good as the Vikings do on paper but they a solid club. Don’t see them as a much lesser location for The Douche than the Twin Cities.

They must be planning on scoring 50 points a game, because there is no way they are going to be able to field a top half of the league defense unless they absolutely nail the draft.
I will say, back in the day, the Vikings were paying out big contracts to five players (Cousins, Cook, Thielen, Smith, and Barr) that ate up a sizeable chunk of the salary cap, but this is beyond the pale.

Here are a few quotes, all of which I find surprising since there seems to be so many people that hate Trump. Also there seems to be so many people that think the Democratic party can do no wrong. Also, sorry to my left leaning friends. You may want to miss this discussion.
The interesting thing here is, NBC and CNN will heavily lean on Democrats in their polls. Usually around 60%, but sometimes more.
To see these numbers from liberal networks is telling. It shows we still have a lot of Americans with common sense. Woke is dead, open borders are dead, a weak and feckless military is dead, weak and feckless foreign policy is dead, and unfair trade practices are dead.

Been thinking about why the Vikings haven’t signed a QB2 yet. They jumped on all other free agents and even swung a couple of trades, so why haven’t they addressed the very important QB2 yet?
The fear was that they were/are considering Aaron Rodgers. I think they communicated to the media through Tom P. that they have no interest in him. (Aaron would have signed if they did, and he doesn’t really want to sign with the Giants and wants to mull things over about the Steelers.)
Do you think they haven’t signed anyone yet because they’re waiting on other teams’ decisions somehow? Maybe because of how the draft shakes out?
Interesting that Tannehill has been floated as an option (by Ben Goesling). Him or Flacco would be pretty good QB2s, imho.
Yeah, why the Vikings have not pursued a QB2 (as far as we know) is puzzling. The other moves in free agency look pretty good so far. I like Flacco the best out of the remaining free agency QB’s. I think he would be a stable, competent, and experienced player that McCarthy could lean on.
If I was Rodgers, I wouldn’t want to go to the Giants or Steelers either. Vikings maybe starting to look more appealing. Nice facilities. Reloading OL and DL. Gets to play the Packers twice and owns the Bears. Only has to beat out a rookie QB.
Heck, he might even give the Vikes a discount at this stage.

I think this may be the sticking point with the Vikings. Rodgers makes sense on a number of levels, except the effect on McCarthy. I think they want McCarthy to start, but Rodgers should beat him out as the starter somewhat easily. McCarthy is years away from being the QB Rodgers is. That said, the team invested in McCarthy as the QBOTF, and bringing in Rodgers might upset that apple cart.
I just have a hard time believing that Rodgers hasn’t hit a wall. Rodgers of 2025 does not seem like Favre of 2009, but who knows. The right gear stack of vitamins can do wonders!

It would be very very very very different if Rodgers was a likeable person and coachable player.

GF mentioned Flacco is 40, which he feels is too old, and we need someone younger. I kind of have the opposite take. Flacco has been a Super Bowl MVP, and is a pocket passer. He can still throw the ball extremely well. McCarthy needs a wise, experienced, and yes accomplished, mentor. Also, if something happens to McCarthy, I believe Flacco can still get it done.
If not, how about Shane Falco? He might be a tad old but has heart I hear.

Maybe KOC thinks he is the only mentor that JJ needs and will just be drafting a backup qb in the later rounds. We don’t have much draft capital for that, so maybe he will be bringing in a UDFA, to which I say ufda.
To me, the head coach has way too much on his plate to be the primary mentor of any one player. Just my opinion, of course.

KOC, OC, QB Coach, Sam, Mullins, and eventually D. Jones have been with JJ (QB) in meetings since he got out of bed after surgery. Hopefully he knows the offense pretty well by now.
He will still have OC and QB coach to work with him, having a Flacco type to ‘buddy up’ with and be able to step in for a game or two is needed is all we need. IMHO of course.
There’s a difference between “book learnin” and actual on field reps against an opposing NFL defense. Even pre-season reps are only half steps. McCarthy is years away from achieving his potential. That would be the ability to run the offense autonomously. Starting out he will have to know where the OC wants the ball to go on any given play call. Schemes are established to exploit specific areas of the field, a given defensive front, or a specific defensive player. Those three objectives have to be blended together in a game plan. Making sure the QB knows the objective of the play call is really important. Over time, the QB “gets it” and doesn’t require this additional input or guidance. They study film, get their reads down, know their adjustments, etc instinctively.
I never said that he doesn’t need reps.
I was stating that he knows the offense (book learning) and he will continue to get input from people who know ie OC and QB coach.
I agree, I’m just speculating since we seem to have no action on a backup qb.
