Vikings Discussion and Random Thoughts
Man, just when you start getting excited about the season, something horrible happens and you know the season is over before it begins. The Minnesota Vikings released center Garrett Bradbury yesterday, and I’m sure all of you are as bummed as I am. They SAID that they tried to trade him, but I assume they didn’t even try, otherwise some team would’ve offered a couple firsts for him.
I’m not sure where we go from here. Should the Vikings just trade everyone and start over? Will Kevin O’Connell even want to coach this year? Will the franchise even stay in Minnesota? I’m not sure, but I’m devastated. We might as well change our name to the Jets. It’s a sad, sad day in Minnesota. I’m guessing they’ll be flying flags at half-mast.

I used to love NCAA hoops, but it is turning into the MLB – a few rich teams and a lot of poor ones. Duke spends 25 million on mens BB NIL payments, Gophers spend 1 million. Most top 25 teams are in the 3-4 million range.

Yeah, I agree Freezey. Rodgers doesn’t make sense for a number of reasons. The thought that we’re waiting for someone else’s backup QB to be released, or traded to us is puzzling. What if the “guy” we want is retained by his current team? What if the really viable options sign with other teams, while we’re waiting to see how the landscape plays out?

Rodgers isn’t coming to Minny. It was one journalist (Rousini from the Athletic) who said it was a possibility based on “a source”. every bit of speculation on him coming to Minnesota is based on that report. Not one local beat writer has backed the rumor with anything credible. Pure clickbait, IMO.

I think everyone with any NFL knowledge knows what is out there, and what options are available for the Vikings.

Yep. This is KAM’s situation to manage. Some of it is cap relevant as you mention. KOC is supposed to be the decider according to what we’ve heard, but he doesn’t seem to be looking at anyone. No one has visited the team, or done a workout, to my knowledge.
Eventually we’ll know what the plan is, and then we can talk about what we think of it.
If the player is on another team then KOC and the Vikings cannot talk to or about that player.
If KOC has already decided he just needs to let KAM work the deal.
True. The sticking point is our trade position. We don’t have a lot to work with, to garner a backup QB from another team.

I believe this is why the Vikings haven’t signed anyone yet. The guy they want is on another roster at the moment. They’re waiting on other teams to cave and accept their trade, or teams are waiting to see how their drafts shake out.

Yep. I’d like to see them bring in another TE through the draft too, but I’m not even overly worried about the secondary anymore. Not really many holes to fill on this roster. A safety to take over for Hitman next year would be a good get in the draft as well.

For sure, but in a perfect world, I think that would be my top two wants. Maybe a RB? It’s weird not having some glaring holes. They will be able to draft whoever falls to them since guys always do fall.

Vikings and CB Jeff Okudah reached agreement today on a one-year contract.
Good for our defensive backfield for sure.
Good to have another CB option.

One thing about ratings is scheme fit. Flo runs a high blitz rate scheme. In fact the highest blitz rate in the NFL. He plays soft zone behind this blitz scheme, to limit big plays deep down field. Thus the DB’s get “beat” a lot playing off coverage. Okudah might not have great stats in this kind of scheme, but he tackles well which is really important. The Vikings defense was very good at limiting teams from scoring a lot of points, averaging 19.5 points per game (5th best in the league). That’s the most important stat.
Or, Flo runs soft zone, because we didn’t have the backs to cover in man coverage.
Having CBs that are good man coverage guys may help the blitz as much as having guys who can get after the QB helps the DBs.
I tend to feel like this was the scheme JV. Playing soft zone is what you do when you’re sending 5 or 6 guys.

Yeah, same here. I never really pay any attention to any of the views on any player in the draft. I think the failure rate amongst draft picks is pretty high on average.
Each year, less than 1.6% of NCAA football players get drafted into the NFL, which amounts to approximately 250 players out of over 16,000 draft-eligible individuals. This means the rest 98.4% of college football players have to change lanes.
And even getting drafted by the team does not guarantee a spot on the active roster. In any given year, only about 50% of all drafted players make it onto their team’s roster.
In the end only about 14% of drafted players become true impact players in the NFL. Most drafted players fade out quickly, and are replaced by other drafted players.

When asked about it by the Judge the admin lawyers said ‘that is operational information that we are not allow to divulge’.

I personally don’t think this District judge had the authority to do what he did. I think the President and the Justice department were operating within the confines of the law, and legally deporting criminal illegal aliens. Liberal judges will continue persecuting the administration though, and legislating from the bench.

I saw a liberal this morning, former congressman, say that Trump can’t deport these guys and that they deserve to be properly vetted prior to being deported. We’re supposed to vet them before deporting them, but not before they enter our country illegally. Absolute madness.

That’s a lot of money for a backup. Probably one of the worst contracts in NFL history. Ranks up there with Albert Haynesworth and Jamarcus Russel.
They’re just waiting for a team to get desperate in training camp and trade for him so they don’t have to eat all that dead money. At least they have the Browns and the Watson contract to point to and say “see we’re at least not as dumb as them.”
Some unlucky team will suffer a QB injury or arrest and be desperate enough to take some of the burden of Kirko’s salary. Then Kirk will have the option to waive his no trade clause, or just keep getting paid by ATL.
Cousins is a great QB though.

Kirk Cousins is and has been an above average to very good QB.
To be top 15 in the world at what you do, is very impressive.
My issue has always been that his play does not match the pay. While not his fault, since the market is crazy, his contract coupled with Rick being an idiot is why the Vikings failed the entire time he was here.
Kirk has been grossly overpaid (my opinion, and I know, you do not agree). and those contracts prevented the team from having resources to improve.
Kirk’s first season elsewhere, and the Vikings had more wins with a below-average QB (Sam Darnold) because they had some money to spend. Now they are completely free from the cursed Kirko Money, I expect even better things.
Kirk still had an almost $30 million cap hit last year, to the Vikings. I think his cap hit to the Vikings may have been higher than the cap hit the Falcons took for him last year.
The cap hit has nothing to do with Cousins. he did not decide to restructure his contract to add void years, he just agreed to do. The GM made this decision.
Blame the GM, not the player for contract extensions, void years, etc to manage the cap.

He is no longer in the spotlight, no longer the leader of the team, and doesn’t need to participate in any precursor activities. In fact, if he was there, he would be the center of attention, distracting the team, and also creating a number of PR issues for Penix. I think this is prudent, pragmatic, and practical.
Why potentially create dissension and distraction? Just let it all play out, and lay low.
I have my annual review today. Maybe I will get fired. I can only wish. I want to be retired already. I told my wife to hurry up and leave for work so I can go back to bed and she wouldn’t know that I skipped work. I have a bad attitude today, if you can’t tell. That is a lot of I’s in that paragraph. It must be all about me.
We accept you for who you are today, bad attitude or not.
