Vikings Discussion and Random Thoughts

Not a whole lot of NFL news out there, just the usual clickbait and fabricated storylines. The draft is two and a half weeks away, and it can’t get here soon enough. After the draft, it won’t be long until minicamps and OTAs, and REAL football news to talk about.

Vikings News

The Vikings released CB Nashon White, per MSN. Nashon White was the guy that the Vikings got from the Cowboys last year in the Andrew Booth Jr. trade.

From Vikings.com, the Vikings held a jamboree to help kick off the new women’s flag football league.

ESPN reviews a list of the Minnesota Vikings 2025 draft picks by round.

NFL News

From NBC Sports, the Seahawks floated an offer to Geno Smith prior to trading him, and Smith didn’t even bother countering the offer.

Yahoo Sports takes a look at the full first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. They also have a list of all 2025 home and away games for all 32 NFL teams.

This happened a couple days ago, but I missed it until now. Julio Jones announced his retirement from the NFL, per Yahoo Sports. Jones played 13 seasons and was one of the best wide receivers in the NFL during his prime.

Media Selection

I saw some discussion about this yesterday, interesting stuff.

When I was much younger the market moved up and down with economic news. Good numbers, the market goes up and vice versa. Now the market is driven to a large extent by the market vigilantes ( the big hedge fund guys) and they loathe volatility, even volatility that may well yield positive results.

If you are going to do something stupid, you might as well go all in. There are so many things wrong with Trump’s Tariff plan I don’t even know where to start. I am in favor of free trade and removing trade barriers, I naively believed that was what Trump was aiming for…..I was wrong.

Really? Trump’s tariffs plan has already brought $3.7T in new business into the country, and pretty much every country is calling to negotiate a new trade deal.

What’s bad about that?

They only care about the money they can make in their arena. They don’t like losing business temporarily or permanently. They are not worried about the country, or the citizens of the country. They care about their bottom line and profit margins. When the tariffs start taking hold, and our ability to export goods EXPLODES around the globe, I think they’ll change their tunes.

BTW I predict the stock market will go up soon, and the DOW will blow by the 50K mark.

How is it free trade if other countries can impose Tarif’s and we dont? We can drop barriers when others do so as well.

NoDakRube
Reply to  KFEY93
8 April 2025 3:34 pm

He is using “trade deficit” as synonymous with trade barriers and Tariffs. Any economist worth his (or her) salt will tell you just because you have a trade deficit with a country doesn’t mean you are being cheated.

Let’s say the country of NoDak only makes ice cream and the country of KFEY only makes vegetables. KFEY likes ice cream but NoDak doesn’t like vegetables…there will grow to be a very large trade deficit in NoDak’s favor, but that doesn’t mean KFEY is being cheated in any way. I honestly don’t know if Trump understands that.

In the areas where there are actually trade barriers and tariffs placed on American goods of course we should place tariffs on incoming goods from those countries.

OK this is called muddying the waters. The point remains, why do we “subsidize” other countries by allowing them to tariff our goods (or not allow them at all) while letting them export their goods to us unencumbered. Millions of jobs have left this country, and 90,000 of our factories are now in other countries. Why? So companies can sell their “American” goods in the USA without Tariffs, while avoiding the Tariffs in the countries they moved to.

Trump has flipped the switch now and companies are coming back home.

I agree. I have a graduate degree in math, and I have taken several economics classes. They should compare tarrif percentage, not total trade deficit.

As as example, say we import 100 million dollars of stuff from a country and there is a 10% tarrif, we would have paid 10 million. But if we sell only 50 million and have an equal tarrif (10%), then we would have paid 5 million. In my head, that is an equal tarrif (10%) even though there is a trade deficit (100 mil compared to 50 mil).

that being said, I believe we charge a lower tarrif to our trade partners than they charge us. That should change

If it wasn’t true the fact checkers out there would be hitting their keyboards like mad right?

So yes, I take a lot of what he says for rote. Does he exaggerate at times? Definitely. Greatest this ever, greatest that ever, etc.

But Trump is talking to the press every single day. If he was mistating reality, there would be data to contradict him. Right?

The tariffs aren’t meant to be long term, almost definitely. They are just a tool to get everybody to the table. I think it’s actually illegal to buy US eggs in Germany, and that is also why you can’t buy a Toyota Hilux in the US. Total bonkers.

But that’s the idea of free markets and a global economy, Without tariffs, products will be manufactured where appropriate economically. Low skill, cheap labor products like shirts will still probably be manufactured in Viet Nam – as they should be. And all consumers, including Americans, will pay less for shirts.
But it’s impossible to establish a true market with all these countries using tariffs to protect their products.

NFL has unreviewable plays. One is personal fouls (blatant facemask in this case). They try to balance the flow of a game. Think in that case a coach should have a right to throw a flag.

They expanded the ability of the sky judge to be able to call down and fix a call at the owner’s meeting a couple weeks ago. They will not allow the sky judge/NY to throw a flag though still, no matter how blatant.

Suppose the season starts an d Cousins is riding the pine in Atlanta. And here JJ starts and either gets hurt or just is flat out playing poorly. We have a SB ready roster and can’t give away too many games given our division.
Cousins could fly in on a Wednesday and start on Sunday given his knowledge of the system.

Town I took my driving test in had no hills. At the end of the test, back at the DMV, tester had me pretend that I was parking up hill, which would be easy, except he had me do it in a circular turnaround at the end of the parking lot. I’ll always remember how hard it was to get close enough to the curb in a narrow radius turnaround to be able to bump the front tire up against the curb without scraping the curb getting that close. My life could have turned in that moment, fail the test end up homeless addicted to crack and giving BJs behind the 7-11.

I set up a couple of pallets on each side of the fence at a logical crossing spot furthest away from our gates and cattle guard, climb over the fence there every morning when I walk the dogs. Done it a thousand times. 10 days ago I swung my leg over the top wire, caught my shoe on a barb, was over balanced and swung over and landed awkwardly on my left side on the edge of the pallets. Knocked the wind out of me. By the end of the walk I was starting to curl up from the pain, knew I couldn’t mask it from my wife, so told her what happened. I told her if this isn’t what fractured ribs feel like then I’m not sure how much worse that would feel. Ran into the department and had them take some x-rays. Mildly displaced fractures of 5 and 6.

Funnily enough I was limping around the yard rest of the day, my wife said did you know your pants are torn to shreds…the rib pain was so bad I had no idea I had torn one of my favorite pairs of waxed front hunting pants from the knee to the groin in the back, with an associated 9 inch long gash about 1/4 inch deep. Rib pain>>>>>superficial barbed wire gash.

Pain was so bad that night I had to take not only two ibuprofen but additionally two acetaminophen, gasp. Still slept like shit.

My Mom has broken her hip and leg falling. She does water aerobics even into her 90s.
It reminds me to work on my core/balance and pay attention to situations which could result in a fall.

The take home message, boys, is that you should never never never brag about being such a chiseled and healthy specimen.

After years of never saying it out loud (I may have typed it on here a time or two), the week before I fell I was visiting with the ladies in the department and made the impromptu announcement that I have never had a single imaging study with the exception of dental x-rays.

Foreshadowing is a bitch.

If you’re crossing that spot daily, you should put in a gate. If you don’t want a gate to have to open, do a double turn/three fence thing like they do on Forest Service trails sometimes.

One of those you had to be there MT anecdotes to follow.

My youngest granddaughter is just a peach, absolutely my favorite (she is 12). Her and her brother have a “fort” with walls and windows and pine branch roof down on the creek, saw they had a fire going a few weeks back. Their paternal grandfather was there with his jet stove, cooking up weenies and burgers. He was barking out orders to her like she was a maid. Next day I told her she needs to tell him not to act like she is his servant, that’s BS how he talks to her. She got pretty teary, said that he told her he was going to give her calf to (neighbor’s son – neighbor kept several of their cows over the winter). Asked her how the deal works, their granddad gave them each a cow, they keep or sell the offspring as they see fit, if they sell he gets a share of the sale price. Her cow had a cow, then another cow, the yearling had a cow, etc…so she has five (female) cows now, her brother has had boys so they get sold as steers. So I postulated, what will you do if you are 18 and this continues, you could have as many as say 15 cows, that is a lot of cows that need food and minerals and shots and AI’ing and assistance with birth etc etc and you are only here part time.

Long story short her dad talked to the neighbor, they agreed that in lieu of giving away one of her calves her granddad should pay them for keeping the cows over the winter. If he needs to sell cows to cover costs (keep in mind he lives like a pauper despite pension SS farm income etc) then sell cows. But don’t make promises you can’t keep.

So this past Saturday we are sitting outside visiting. Granddad comes up in the side by side, says “you need to come down and help me load up that calf for E____”. Her dad says time out, that is not going to happen. Granddad gets real quiet (his go to response) and I’m thinking oh f is he going to blow. He asks her well how am I going to pay for overwintering the cows, she says you made the decision you have to figure it out but you’re not giving away my calf…you can pay me for the calf if you want.

After a long uncomfortable pause he said, I’m going to tariff you. They will be big beautiful tariffs, and I will win.

From the story in the ‘Mythical Words Up Top’.
Experts claim that they are not Dire Wolfs but genetically modified Gray Wolfs. More of a Hybrid than either of them.

Always thought Game of Thrones didn’t spend enough talking about the Dire Wolfs that the Starts had. Of course I only read the books that were published maybe the shows had them as a bigger part of the story line.

I think it could lead to pure bred Dire Wolves. They used a grey wolf mother to grow the pups…so unless they find a way to grow them in a lab they wouldn’t be 100% pure genetically.

I thought they injected Dire Wolf DNA into the Gray Wolf eggs then put em back into her womb so she is just a surrogate.

The mother provided no DNA. The DNA was created in a lab. They used grey wolf as the starter and then spliced in the sections of Dire wolf DNA that are different from DNA they collected from a tooth and a skull.

The DNA strand was then inserted into a denucleated cell and transplanted into the surrogate mother. All she did was act as an incubator.

Sooo then cant they do the same with one of these pups when older (and if female) and that would make it 100% Dire wolf from start to finish?

Not really. The argument is that the DNA is not 100% dire wolf. They filled in and replaced some gaps the best they could, but they can’t actually replicate the DNA completely so where they don’t know what is supposed to be there, they just use gray wolf DNA. These “dire wolves” are very close to dire wolves (or at least have very dire wolf like traits such as large and white), but there is and will always be grey wolf traits.

I would think that they might have full tasmanian tiger DNA since they only went extinct a couple of decades ago (not at all if you ask some people). That would be neat to bring back if that is the case. They are trying to do something similar with woolly mammoths and will use elephant DNA as the base and to fill in gaps. It might be a little different if they can find some mostly intact cells/DNA in the frozen woolly mammoth. I heard they have made a woolly mouse so far.

I’m interested to see if there are any unintended side effects on the wolves though. It doesn’t take much and there are genes that are linked together that you wouldn’t expect. For example, if these are anything like tundra foxes, I bet they’re really aggressive. I think it was russians tried raising tundra foxes for their fur once upon a time. They tried breeding only the calmer and tamer ones. They ended up with tamer foxes, but they ended up not having white coats anymore.

They found a frozen mammoth a few years back, but I’m sure there are still pieces missing. “Mostly intact” could be a long way from viable to replicate.

That makes more sense. They have some missing links in the DNA chain. These will be interesting to watch to see how they grow and what side affects are, disease, joint break down, life span, etc.

I used to enjoy watching golf, but it doesn’t fit my schedule currently. Some day I might get back into it.

Van De Velde’s meltdown was epic. I also watched it live and couldn’t believe what he did. I was like, what? are you stupid? Take a penalty, knock the ball back into play, take your bogey and win the Championship.

Nope.

Of course he ended up in a tie, and lost in a playoff to Paul Lawry I think.

Great Ryder Cup moment there, but I felt bad for José María Olazábal, who had a putt to halve the hole. The whole USA team rushed onto the green, creating a huge celebration/distraction. He had to wait, and wait while the Americans hugged each other and made a scene.
