Vikings Discussion and Random Thoughts

For those of you regular tax filers, today is the final day to get those returns filed. Self-employed folks are on a different schedule, we got screwed a while ago. We watched Bench Warmers last night, or started to, anyway. It’s a pretty good show, I’d never seen it before. 1,000,000 times better than that crappy Minecraft movie I subjected myself to the other day.

Derek Carr announced that he has a shoulder injury that may need surgery. Odd timing for the announcement, kinda reminds me of when Sidney Rice waited until right before the 2010 season to have surgery. The great thing is (great if you’re not a Saints fan, and I’m not) that the Saints just reworked Carr’s deal, so they’re SCREWED if he can’t play this year. Link to Carr’s contract on Spotrac. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving team. #NEVERFORGET

Vikings.com looks at cornerback prospects for the Vikings in the 2025 NFL draft.

NFL News

The Giants are hosting Shadeur Sanders for a private workout on Thursday, per NFL.com. The Giants hold the number 3 pick in the draft.

CBS Sports mocks the Saints as trading into the top 5 now that they may be looking for a QB.

CBS Sports looks at what’s next for Kirk Cousins. I predict the Browns or Saints. The *aints could POSSIBLY swing a trade IF the Falcons are willing to eat most of his 2025 salary, which they’d likely be willing to do.

Another potential day two draft pick is having issues. Former Texas WR Isaiah Bond surrendered on a sexual assault warrant and was released after posting bond, per NBC Sports. Sheesh.

From NFL.com, Patrick Peterson has ‘no regrets’ after 13 seasons, and says “I can still play, but I do not want to play”. Good for him, going out on his own terms.

Media Selection

A couple takes on the Derek Carr injury announcement.

Went and played 9 holes and shot 41. Played with two older guys, and a kid in his 20’s. I think he plays college golf. He played from the tips, and on one par three that was playing 195 yards for him, he hit a 7 iron. We normal golfers played from the Whites, and that hole played 170 yards for us. I hit a 7 wood that flew about 155 yards to the front of the green, and rolled out another 10 yards. The other guys both hit their balls into the water, and then dropped their balls on the other side of the lake, and played from there. We had a good time, but the kid was very meticulous and slow, and took forever to hit a shot. He walked all over the entire green a couple times before hitting a putt, took deep breaths before moving into his address position, etc. We just walked up and hit our balls.

He shot 2 under par. We just wanted the round to be over.

I watched a Bobby Jones video on putting years ago, and he said to stand up straighter, and be more leisurely with your putting. Be relaxed. I stand very close to the ball and use a longer putter to take the strain off my back. I still don’t practice putting anymore though. Gave up practice years ago.

That is a very strange comparison. I used to play that model of Pings and it’s day it was considered super game improvement. The TM’s he is playing are Pro Models and quite hard to hit well – small sweet spot compared to a large one for the Pings.
Now, agree ‘modern’ models put a five iron loft on a seven iron and everyone goes Whoa I can it hit farther. Trouble is, they can’t hold a green because it’s lower and hotter.
But hay, distance sells.

Conference Championships exist btw. You have to make it to those to have a chance at a SB. All of those QBs you’ve listed have been there, many multiple times. If you cant get there on a regular basis you area below average. Again, nice try, try again tomorrow. Dying on the Kirk was/is good hill is not wise.

Nah, it was hyperbole like yours. Playoff wins don’t equate to stats and quality of play by one person. How many SB’s did Brees win? One, by hardcore cheating by the refs and his team trying to injure. He wouldn’t have any if it weren’t for that. Would anyone call him average?

Kirk Cousins, is by all means, significantly above average for QB play and statistics. Factually.

Go look at some statistics. KC is above average and doesn’t even belong in the same sentence as Ponder and Teddy, who were very below average QB’s (I would say bad, statistically).

True. Without that stellar defense, the Vikings could not win. That whole season was a victory lap for one of the best defenses in franchise history.

In 2018 that defense faltered in important moments, and that was one of the reasons the record was so much worse than in 2017. The run game took a huge step back as well BTW. In 2017 the Vikings ranked 7th in the league in yards per game rushing. In 2018 they fell to 30th.

Every team is different GF, and you seem to forget the Vikings lost their OC in the offseason, and their O-line and running game coach passed away in the pre-season. The new OC flamed out in the NFL and in fact didn’t last the season with the Vikings. The defense in 2017 was totally lights out, and had an amazing year with takeaways, and holding opposing defenses to low point totals.

Cousins came in and despite all that, put up great numbers.

Excuses… that’s a cop out. It’s like saying “just because you lost a tire, doesn’t mean you should lose the race”. No one ever makes excuses for Cousins, because his production stats speak for themselves. Rather the team needs those excuses for not winning.

Here is a ‘no excuse’ thought – his record is what it is.
But how many ‘average’ QB’s stay around long enough as a starter to throw for nearly 45,000 yards and 300 TD’s.

Back in 2016 I shared on the DN that my dog Jack had passed, and later that we got a new choco puppy Tuck. Later I shared on skoloholics that we rescued a second two year old choco Bubba. You guys are sorta my virtual buddies, so I want to share that I helped Tuck over the rainbow bridge on Sunday. He was such a good boy, but now he rests down in the copse of trees just down the hill from our place, next to the creek, where he loved to sun himself.

He was two months shy of his ninth birthday, he always lived life to the fullest, absolutely loved entertaining people with “spin o ramas”, “loopy loopies”, never met a ball he wouldn’t fetch, would swim for hours. But, he was also exasperating, in his youth he ate rocks (then threw them up in the middle of the night, plus broke a tooth on a rock), ate cow shit or anything else remotely enticing (ditto), had funky ass toenails that even clipping every couple of weeks went from trimming into the quick to breaking off painfully and bleeding, and for the last year or so couldn’t digest dry dog food (so we moistened food and added pumpkin and canned dog food as well as human food, yet still slowly lost weight), had arthritis, and was always pulling up lame from his balls to wall fetching routine. We were giving him doggy ibuprofen every couple of days while the vet watched his borderline renal insufficiency closely.

I will miss my hunting buddy, there was no thicket thorny enough to deter him from busting open to get a pheasant.

He was lame for the last week, I was worried he had partially torn the CCL on his stifle joint. On Saturday night after supper he did his spin o rama routine with his big blue ball, yelped and did the toe tap gait, I tested him and he had a positive drawer sign. I knew also that even if we did surgery, he would probably blow the CCL on the other side while recovering.

I wanted him to somehow get better on his own, but that was me being selfish. I was awake all night thinking about the morning…half the time when I looked down at him on his bed he was awake looking at me. He wanted me to know it was time.

Although I remember commenting when Brad talked about helping his dog pass that I couldn’t do it, I knew it had to be done. He hated the vet and I know he would have been unhappy his last moments if I took him there.

The chocos sat contentedly down with me Sunday morning while I dug a grave under his favorite tree. I put Bubba in the house and sat with Tuck, tossed the ball a short distance for him while he did a three legged fetch. Then we sat and watched some geese landing on the other side of the creek, and one second he was enjoying my petting him and telling him he was a good dog, and the next he was gone to a better place, I hope. At least he was no longer in pain.

Goodbye, buddy.

This was him Sunday morning.

We had two put down at the vet.
Then our last one we found out about in-home vets that handle that. Our girl was not as stressed, laying on her favorite bed, getting pets, while the IV started. Much better process.

I still cried like crazy, but my wife and I agreed that we will avoid the vet if possible with our current two dogs when it comes time to say goodbye.

I know I would rather be at home vs in the hospital when my time comes.

I can’t get over the Carr shoulder in the words up top thingy.

In a real world example, it would be like having someone signed up to cover obstetric call for the next six months, only to have them let you know a month before OB call starts that they are taking time off for maternity leave. D’oh!

Biden will deliver his first public remarks since leaving office at the National Conference of Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled in Chicago today.

Supposedly going to talk about Social Security. Likely will say Trump wants to do away with it, or is destroying it with DOGE and Elon Musk.

Public speaking is a very nervous situation for most everyone. People who naturally enjoy being the center of attention, tend to do the best, which is about 6% of the population.

Tell her this… no one knows what you are planning to say. If you forget something, or miss something, the only person in the room who knows that is you. Don’t worry about it. Also, this is your presentation, so be proud of it, and talk freely. Finally, “to thine ownself be true”. Be yourself, and be relaxed, warm, and confident. You’re gonna rock this!

Yeah, the locker room, stuff is all anecdotal commentary. I read this about his time with the Colts, but again, it’s based on a reporters interviews with folks in the organization, not really first hand knowledge.

“As for the Colts, the issues with Wentz stretched back to before the season began, one source said, and over the course of the year, some grew frustrated at what they deemed a lack of leadership, a resistance to hard coaching and a reckless style of play, which had a role in several close losses this year,”

The Vikings aren’t bringing Cousins back. KAM and KOC decided they would move on from him from the day they were hired. The plan was to keep him on one year deals until they got a guy they felt could take the reins. Cousins was too expensive, and they wanted out from under that contract as soon as they possibly could. It was not a matter of Cousins leadership, talent, or play. It was always dollars and cents. Business decision, but it also made Cousins feel unwanted. He ain’t coming back to a place that didn’t want him.

One, Cousins doesn’t have a lot of options at this point.
Two, believe KAM and KOC were of different minds about this. KOC was a lot more in the keep him camp, KAM about the money.
At this point though, doesn’t really matter.

No longer New Vikings Fan

Cousins wants to start. So he won’t come here for that fundamental reason. If he can’t start somewhere, he’ll just hang out in Atlanta and watch that team fail over and over under Raheem Morris. I haven’t seen anything in Penix that makes me think he’ll be anything but average in the NFL. Might be so bad, that they put Cousins back in.

I think you’re right about KOC wanting to keep him, because frankly Cousins is the best QB he’s ever coached. But he also knew from day one that KAM wanted to bring in a rookie, on a rookie contract to run the offense. To that end, next year, I wouldn’t be surprised if KAM drafted a QBOTF to potentially replace McCarthy for the same reason.

QB’s get expensive quick in the NFL.

McCarthy will likely be quite good. I have to wait and see how well he processes before I can really make any comment on him one way or the other. Every QB in the NFL has talent. The ability to understand defensive schemes, match up’s, tendencies, etc while executing an NFL offense is what sets them apart. Initially KOC will simply tell McCarthy where to go with the ball on every play. Eventually (two years from now) we’ll see if he can truly command the offense and be the General on the field.

Of course he can force a trade. He’s the ONLY person who can force a trade. That’s the purpose of a no trade clause. The Falcons don’t want the most expensive backup QB in the league riding the pine. For some reason they chose this path though, and they are ones who are stuck.
