Random Thoughts

I took kiddo and one of his friends fishing last night. The weather turned ugly just as we left town, and was really bad by the time we pulled up to the water. We gave it the ol’ college try, but between the wind, the ominous dark clouds, and the approaching blob on the radar, we had to leave without any fish. We did have a great time, so that’s what really matters. We’ll get out again this week, there aren’t any walleye in the freezer yet and that needs to change.

Vikings Discussion

Draft day is only a few days away! We’re having our annual get-together at the house again. It’ll only be a one-day event due to our trip to Minneapolis, but we WILL be there on Thursday for round one. If any of you are in the Bismarck area and want to swing by, shoot me an email at [email protected] and I can let you know where we are. Kiddo and I are making homemade seafood gumbo, I’ll have some of my world famous (well, it’s famous in our household, anyway) homemade salsa, and I’m sure we’ll have more good food and good conversation. It’s always a good time.

seafood gumbo, yum yum

Like I mentioned, we’re heading to Minneapolis on Friday. We have tickets to game 3 of the Timberwolves-Lakers series, so we’re heading to town for that. We’re staying Friday night, and for some reason, we’re thinking of hitting a Twins game on Saturday prior to hitting the road to head back to America. Hopefully we can get out of town without getting carjacked.

Vikings News

At Vikings.com, HC Kevin O’Connell has an opening message for the 2025 season, including an update on J.J. McCarthy and more.

Here’s the full Kevin O’Connell press conference on YouTube.

The Vikings finalized their 2025 coaching staff, details from Vikings.com.

NFL News

Some details on Nico Lamaleava’s NIL contract with UCLA, courtesy of The Sporting News. I guess everyone is up in arms over this stuff. Honestly, the NCAA brought this on themselves. They’ve been making bank off of these kids for decades without sharing a dime. Their corruption created this monster, and it is impossible to say how bad this will get before it gets better.

Colts GM Chris Ballard says he expects both Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones to play ‘at some point’, per NFL.com. LOL, that’s SO reassuring. He expects the starter to suck so bad that the other guy will eventually play. What’s the saying? If you have too many QBs, you don’t have a QB? I dunno, something along those lines. There’s a reason that franchise hasn’t been able to establish a QB since they jettisoned Peyton Manning. Dummies.

CBS Sports says the Falcons are reportedly having discussions with teams regarding a trade for Kirk Cousins but are asking too much. They have almost zero leverage, not a great time to try to play hardball. Goof balls. The Falcons are reportedly asking the acquiring team to pay $20 million of the $45 million in guarantees remaining on Kirk’s contract, and teams (wisely) are saying “ah hell no!”. Wait, I thought Kirk wanted to retire a Falcon?

In related news, the Falcons have signed QB Easton Stick, per MSN. Stick played college ball at NDSU, and has been the Chargers backup for the past six seasons. Could this signing be an indication that the Falcons know that they will be moving Kirk?

Media Selection

I found a tick on myself yesterday, and it reminded me of this Pearl Jam song from their Vitalogy album. Enjoy!

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics to a minimum. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be respectful and civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument, not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW language/pictures to a minimum. We don’t want anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • To summarize, behave like adults. Treat each other with respect, and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something, please do. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.

T-pups down by 19 after 1 qtr.
Not sure it means much as they were down by 7 after 1 qtr in the first game before winning by 22.

RFK Jr. finally planning to ban artificial dyes in foods. Way too long coming, IMO. I’m sure some here will defend it because “they ate a ton of it when they were a kid, and they’re fine!”, but it is long overdue with known neurologic and behavioral issues, not to mention carcinogenic effects. Many companies claimed they would do this without being forced (many in 2016 or 2018, claiming to have it done by 2020 or 2022), but they reneged and used COVID as an excuse in some cases (supply chain issues) and then claimed their customer base didn’t really care, so why do it anyway? I wish he had a sooner timeline, since most of these trash companies already have a healthier/safer option they sell in Europe, but they “need time to reformulate” etc., which I understand to some extent (much increased demand for natural dyes and sources).

Just got back from a nice round of golf, but man it got hot. Shot 42 on the front, and hit the ball pretty well. Putting was meh. On the back though I started to tire over the last 6 or 7 holes. Shot 47. Hit some really poor shots. Still it was a fun round with a couple guys who were mostly out there to drink beer.

Brandel did fine and the value for IOL in this draft is supposedly in rounds 3-4. There are a lot of mid tier tackles that project more as guards. No need to overdraft a mid level talent from a mid talent school. By drafting on of the later guys you also hopefully end up with somebody that has experience at tackle if you need him to step in in a pinch.

Diversion means they try to train them to be good. It’s bullshit. No repayment. It is a slap on the wrist. I had kids egging my house and damaging my garage doors over the summer (at 2:00 AM) over 40 times, and they finally caught them when I called one night. They got no charges, they were put in a “diversion” program (trying to get them to be good in the future and explain what they were doing was wrong). I couldn’t even get their names to sue for damages because those teenage terrorists were minors.

I saw MT made a post about one new study that was released about fasting and it showing an increase in cardio vascular issues /heart problems in people. Iv learned to take every study with a grain of salt since COVID because I know the process studies go through to be published and made public is very flawed.

That being said MT, I have questions about the study. What was the core demographic of people involved in the study? Where they all considered over weight when they tried fasting, how old were they? Did they have prior medical issues? What was their diet like? etc. These are all small things that add up and can throw things off. I question the study because I’ve naturally fasted since I was in JH. I stopped eating breakfast because I was never hungry in the AM any way and I got to sleep in later for school. I eat between 6-8pm at night and dont eat again until 11-noon ish about every day so thats 15-18ish hour fast every day for the past almost 20 years of my life and im perfectly fine and healthy. Not over weight at all. But I also would say I eat healthier then the average American (low bar I know) im not a health nut, i just calorie and sugar watch. Were there people like me in the study?

I just need more details because I refuse to believe A causes B with out knowing the context.

There is a lot of context and many confounding factors to consider for all studies (they can never take out all confounding factors in life to study one single aspect perfectly). I have a hard time believing a lot of studies due to overlooking obvious things or too many factors, and previous lies from “scientists” regarding COVID and other things have made me more skeptical. I do believe that reduced caloric intake in general has been shown to lead to longer lifespans, which would lead me to believe that as long as you’re not over-eating a huge amount when you’re not fasting, then it is probably fine or even good for you. That is my take on it.

KFEY93
Reply to  JRo_42
22 April 2025 11:34 am

That would be my thought as well. I think we have to ask, “Why do most people start fasting?” And I would say thats for weight loss/general health. “Who typically needs that change?” Overweight/unhealthy people. I can see that system shock causing problems with said people. Fasting can be beneficial but it has to be done right.

Can you elaborate on the lies from scientists regarding COVID-19?

About the only thing I can think of that was lied about was that the lab leak theory was discounted without any actual attempt at disproving that theory.

Yes there was the no kids in school, wear masks, close businesses, etc stuff that we all suffered through but in my recollections those were all policy decisions driven by a number of factors, not scientists lying about things.

Being 100% honest, I don’t remember that exact claim being made, nor published. Given that there was little time to test the vaccines in the setting of a pandemic I doubt there were any publications on record. I do believe and research has borne out that receiving the vaccination reduces risk of contracting the virus, lessens severity of the infection, and does reduce (but not eliminate) the risk of passing the virus on to others.

The latter, by the way, is the exact reason I get the flu virus year after year. Unlike the lay population, I am constantly in contact with ill people and immune compromised people and have no desire to share the two populations with one another.

I believe the statement was made by Biden, not a scientist but not a policy statement either.

Fauci quotes…..

“This is a pandemic of the unvaccinated…”
“It was likely created by at a wet market….”
“Wear a mask for protection…”
“Stand six feet away from people….”
“Two weeks to flatten the curve….”
“You can’t pass the virus if you are vaccinated…..”
“Natural immunity offers little protection compared to vaccinated immunity….”

Let alone Fauci himself approving and moving gain of function research to the Wuhan lab in 2014 after the Obama administration banned the practice.

Fauci and Medical Science have their dirty hands all over this pushing a specific narrative.

It became politics, which has now damaged anything coming out of the medical community.

Unfortunately.

And KIDS were at no risk. and yet we closed schools and sports….so stupid.

And when there are a lot of dead ends around, the virus is not going to go anywhere. And that’s when you get a point that you have a markedly diminished rate of infection in the community.”

I watched this video. I’m going to be honest and say I’m not going to sift through dozens of 40-80 minute long videos by Chris Martenson trying to find the key moments where he provides documentation of scientists lying to the public about COVID-19. He takes up to 7 minutes in this video alone just to explain the meaning of a single line in the response to his FOIA request.

I don’t dispute that I myself scratch my head at some of the policy decisions. Don’t dispute that the media news cycle focused on continuous updates of death counts and case numbers and drove general hysteria. I don’t dispute that at my employer even a year after the vaccine was made available and case counts were manageable that we still had remote only meetings.

I also don’t dispute that many people died during the pandemic. Our hospital had the worst of it in the entire state. Were I in charge of policy I don’t know what I would have prospectively done different without knowing what I now do.

I do take issue with the lies from scientists meme. Show me the evidence and I will believe it.

WAY less people died from COVID than was claimed. Many people called that out in real time (people dying from car accidents were claimed to have been deaths from/with COVID, etc.). I would venture to say confidently millions less people died from COVID than was claimed. It was not nearly as deadly as they would have us believe.

So yes, lab leak, it was killing millions of people at a high rate (rate was WAY lower than they claimed), it was killing young healthy people, the vaccine was 100% effective (which I called as a lie immediately because even 95% effective for vaccines is a stretch), masks prevent transmission, ventilators were helping people, etc. etc.

Believe me I know you are naturally distrustful of science. I saw it come up on my morning mayo clinic news feed and obviously it has been a topic of some conversation on here. I professionally do not believe that intermittent fasting is some panacea for weight loss or improved health…which is why I shared my experience with DDP yoga…it led to initial and so far short term prolonged weight loss but to me is more about flexibility and core strength. If a large epidemiologic study came out and said that those that do DDP yoga were twice as likely to die of cardiac disease I would certainly like to know about it and review the demographics, much as you are requesting.

Dont paint me with that wide brush my guy. Thats not true. Science is great, and studies are great. But Science is meant to be challenged and examined by all. Not just :”Drs. and Scientist bow down to us and our knowledge you could never understand!” Im critical because I know the system and the people in it are flawed and are willing to make $$$ and let the average person die. Again, im not dissing the study at its core, im just not buying the result and saying theres needs to be more done. Here’s my issue with trying to work my way through your presentation/diction.

You asked for more information on the AHA viewpoint regarding the study. I not only cut and paste relevant data but provided a link to the article in question.

I request another poster provide some details of which lies were promulgated by scientists and you tell me to sift through and watch hours of videos by a neurotoxicology PhD.

I state you are naturally distrustful of science. The definition of distrustful includes skepticism…read your statement above, is that not skepticism, distrust? How dare I “paint you with that wide brush”! The inhumanity!

I did not bring it up for discussion on a slow day to demand that all of you intermittent fasters stop intermittent fasting. Your decisions are your decisions. Why would I bring it up at all? I must enjoy getting kicked in the fucking balls!

You know the system, in reality you know the system far better than I do. The information on openpaymentsdata.cms.gov is a lie, I actually make hundreds of thousands of dollars by just posting items for discussion on here that advance the interests of my overlords in Big Pharma. In school all we did was draw pfizer logos with crayons and learn how to write a dozen prescriptions when only one would do.

More young people are taking up smoking now than in two generations, which is awesome! Free thinkers! If you don’t believe smoking is good for you, the burden is on you to show me all the proof that smoking is bad.

Ask NVF some detail of his military knowledge, he gives an informed answer, but we know better than him what goes on in the military and the battlefield…just watch a few hours of YT videos from this expert!

Religious discussion on Easter Monday, the horror! Show us all the proof that Jesus rose from the dead! Got a few hundred hours of Dawkins videos for you to watch that prove my POV!

From the AHA, the reader’s digest version:

https://newsroom.heart.org/news/8-hour-time-restricted-eating-linked-to-a-91-higher-risk-of-cardiovascular-death

Research Highlights:

  • A study of over 20,000 adults found that those who followed an 8-hour time-restricted eating schedule, a type of intermittent fasting, had a 91% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
  • People with heart disease or cancer also had an increased risk of cardiovascular death.
  • Compared with a standard schedule of eating across 12-16 hours per day, limiting food intake to less than 8 hours per day was not associated with living longer.

Study details and background:

  • The study included approximately 20,000 adults in the U.S. with an average age of 49 years.
  • Study participants were followed for a median length of 8 years and maximum length of 17 years.
  • The study included data for NHANES participants who were at least 20 years old at enrollment, between 2003-2018, and had completed two 24-hour dietary recall questionnaires within the first year of enrollment.
  • Approximately half of the participants self-identified as men, and half self-identified as women. 73.3% of the participants self-identified as non-Hispanic white adults, 11% self-identified as Hispanic adults, 8% self-identified as non-Hispanic Black adults and 6.9% of adults self-identified as another racial category, including mixed-race adults and adults of other non-Hispanic races.

The study’s limitations included its reliance on self-reported dietary information, which may be affected by participant’s memory or recall and may not accurately assess typical eating patterns. Factors that may also play a role in health, outside of daily duration of eating and cause of death, were not included in the analysis.
Future research may examine the biological mechanisms that underlie the associations between a time-restricted eating schedule and adverse cardiovascular outcomes, and whether these findings are similar for people who live in other parts of the world, the authors noted.

Respectfully, you should share your sources that intermittent fasting is associated with certain endpoints. You mention weight loss. Did you keep a food log before and after initiating intermittent fasting…did you lose weight despite consuming the same number of calories…same activity level?

I would theorize that consuming the same number of calories and burning the same number of calories, one’s weight would be stable whether they ate every 15 minutes 24 hours a day or ate one enormous meal daily.

I’m skeptical that intermittent fasting in and of itself has any long term benefits.

the coach sucks, he is WAY out of his league and doesn’t know how to wrangle 5-6 year old kids. it doesn’t help that most those kids are super disrespectful and their parents have no idea how to handle their own kids.

my wife asked why i didn’t want to coach. i told her i would literally have a majority of the kids running foul poles for not listening or paying attention or talking when they shouldn’t and that the parents would be mad i’m not teaching their kids anything even though it’s the parents fault their kids suck…

The head coach and his kid have a tough relationship because of the kid’s mom. He tries to get him to pay attention but I just don’t think he cares about baseball. The other assistant coach’s kid is just not good and his parents are horrible. He had my kid, who loves baseball more than anything, ready to quit one night because all he was doing was yelling at the kids for not doing things right but never actually coaching them how to do it. I was not there for that or it would have been stopped. His mom is a nightmare as well and yells at every kid from the stands like she is some professional batting coach and I just want to tell her she can help coach all of the kids when her kid learns how to hit and catch a ball. Drives me nuts some of the parents that just overload the kid when they’re in the middle of batting. It has been cool to see some of them improve with the little I have been able to help them.

That is a hard thing to handle. I remember my wife coaching girls basketball, and several parents went nuts when my wife would discipline their precious princesses by making them run when disrespectful, and also when she would not play everyone on the team near the end of games, but actually try and win by playing the best 5 available.

I had to step in twice to ask parents to leave.

People suck.

I feel bad for the kids who have no interest and are only there because their parents make em. I had a kid tell me last night that he’d rather be at the soccer practice. I support my kids and encourage them to be in something, but I’m not going to force them into something to relive some failure in my life.

Good parenting advice there.

We made our kids finish what they started, even though there were a few cases over the years of them joining a sport because a friend did, only to find out they hated the sport. Good lesson for them. Be sure you want this, and finish what you started if possible.

That sounds like fun. Glad he is enjoying it.

We were all disrespectful 5-6 year olds at one point. I remember getting all pouty when the coach was on me for having weak ankles weak ankles you have weak ankles and thinking what am I supposed to do. I guess just be envious of kids with strong ankles that could skate like Lafleur.

My friend, who used to coach our kids in baseball always likes to tell other parents my story.

I usually hung out at practice or was there early so I got to see my friends (the coaches) yelling at their kids at practice. I never seen them yell at any other kids especially mine. So I asked him once, why he never yells at my kid like he does his kid? He smiles and says he never has to, my kid was always where he needed to be and if he wasn’t he listened the first time so the next time he was where he was supposed to be. So the next game they played, the coach deliberately yelled at my kid for a very minor mistake on a play. I think he was a foot or two too close to first base. Later the coach told me he had been trying to find something wrong with his game all day and that was the best he could come up with.

Consensus seems to be the Vikes are taking Safety, Corner, or Oline with their first pick.

Bowbunch got me on the TE train.

Sometimes Loveland lasts until 24-27 in my mocks, but he is usually gone by then. I’d also like some second round picks.

Kwesis needs to spin straw into gold with only four picks.

The Miami TE was on the radio yesterday on my way home. I haven’t watched any of his higlights or anything, but sounds like a good kid that will be available later, but I’d really like to see Loveland and JJ pair up again or Taylor.

It was good, about 2500 miles, 5 stops to visit with family and friends plus an overnight to break the trip home from Santa Barbara to Boise.
We can/have made the trip home in 12+ hours but that last few 100 miles is a rough 2 lane hwy especially when worn out.

I am paying for Vikings tix this season, at least 1 game. I want to see the start of the JJ legacy.

Retiring a Falcon right?

While Atlanta publicly says it’s not working hard to move Cousins, ESPN reports that the Falcons privately have had trade discussions with multiple teams, but have asked for a lot in return. Atlanta reportedly has asked interested teams to pay $20 million of the $45 million in guarantees Cousins has left on his contract. No team has been willing to do that.

The Cleveland Browns have long been viewed as the favorite to trade for Cousins, since they have a clear need at quarterback while Cousins has familiarity with head coach Kevin Stefanski, but what happens in the 2025 NFL Draft could shake up Cousins’ market drastically. ESPN reports that there is a feeling around the league a team like the Minnesota Vikings or Pittsburgh Steelers may be willing to pay down $10 million instead of $20 million. How much Atlanta agrees to pay Cousins will also affect trade compensation. The more Cousins’ new team pays in salary, the lower the compensation will be.

The Atlanta Falcons have signed quarterback Easton Stick to a contract, sparking trade rumors for veteran Kirk Cousins, who already lost his starting spot last season.
