Random Thoughts

We went to the Wolves game last night, and had an absolute blast! The Lakers played a tough game and didn’t seem to miss a shot, but the Wolves hung tough and pulled away at the finish. The stadium was rockin’, and several Vikings were there as well. I have to say, LeBron and Donkic are great players, but damn, they whine A LOT. It was non-stop through the whole game. Anyway, I’m glad the Wolves won, and I’m more of a basketball fan after attending the game. I think Jayden McDaniels is my favorite player on the team, I may even get a jersey, you never know. The Wolves have put together a hell of a team.

Speaking of good teams, we won’t be watching one today, we’re going to see the Twins. Oh well, at least it’s supposed to be a nice day and the stadium is a really cool place to watch the game. I’m guessing the Angels will clobber them, but maybe we’ll get lucky. I’m a Braves fan, but the Twins are my second team by marriage, so I’ll root for them.

Vikings Discussion

The Vikings had one pick on day two of the draft, and they traded back that pick (97) and received yesterday’s final pick (102). They used that pick to take Tai Felton, a speedy WR from Maryland. Felton is extremely athletic but a bit small-ish. He’s 6’2″ but only 180 pounds. The team must like something about him or have a plan for him. I know the last time the Vikings drafted a Maryland WR, it went pretty well. That WR was a guy named Stefon Diggs & was chosen in the fifth round, and he turned out pretty well.

NFL Draft Discussion

The Shadeur Sanders thing is gaining a lot of attention. The way he’s handling the disappointment isn’t helping him any. To me, you come out and say “hey, wherever I go in whichever round, I’m gonna show up and work hard and strive to show everyone they made a mistake”. Instead, he kinda comes across as whiny, and reinforces the narrative, whether true or not, that he’s entitled and a bit spoiled. It’ll be interesting to see where he goes.

The Vikings have two picks today, both in the fifth round (139 and 142). We’ll be here to see what they do, and to see just how far Shadeur Sanders will fall. Come join in the fun!

First, a story from CBS Sports from around the time of the Super Bowl. Deion Sanders reportedly asked some teams to NOT draft his son. If true, that would partially explain his son’s not being drafted yet.

Some dumbass livestreamed a prank call to Shadeur Sanders, pretending to be an NFL GM, story from the NY Post. People can be ugly, this is a crappy thing to do.

This is not the first time this has happened.
It happened to Cooper DeJean last year and the NFL did nothing.

My point is that the NFL is the one investigating itself on this, since I believe the NFL hands out league issued phones for the draftees.

So only because it’s Sanders the NFL says it will investigate who leaked the number from its own office.

Its a complete joke.

The kids off one of the Falcons coaches was involved. Nobody was supposed to have the number but teams and he got it from his dad’s unlocked iPad, supposedly.

I read Russini claimed that by Saturday, Cousins would come out and announce he would be willing to talk about a trade.

My thought at the time was, there isn’t a single team out there that needs a QB, he would want to go to. Why folks thought he was going to leave the Falcons unless a really good starting job was available, I don’t know. He’s going to be the backup, be a great teammate, and see what happens during the year.

Played 18 holes in 3 hours and 15 minutes as a foursome. Played with a guy and his two sons (in their 20’s) and we all played well. I hit several Hybrids and even a few irons off the tee, and only pulled driver three times. Smoked it on two, and hit it solid on the third. My wedges were en fuego today. I laid up short of trouble several times, and saved par with some very impressive wedges. I mean hitting them to two feet. Shot 41-42. Very happy with the round.

A little golf note I got this week. I have always maintained it’s the golfer not the equipment. Thus, I play 20 year old irons and a seven year old driver (460 cc though).
Was on the range the other day and older gent (like me) was having a Titleist driver fitting down the range, When I got done, walked down and watched some. When he was done, I said to the fitter that’s a nice looking driver. He said wan t to hit it and I said OK. The driver had more loft and a much weaker shaft than mine. Well, first swing hit it 20 yards past where I had been hitting with mine. Hit four more, and all were about the same. And the big thing, it was so much easier to swing and easier on my body.
Maybe the right equipment may just matter some.

I think I posted here that I bought a set of PXG irons from a guy, and paid him about half of what he was asking. My old irons were a Nicklaus set I bought in March of 2001. In fact all my clubs were purchased at that time. After I bought the PXG’s I got a new 3 and 5 wood, and then a new driver. My seven wood is 15 years old (and honestly, it’s my favorite club).

Anyway, the PXG’s and the other clubs are really good. They made a big difference in my game.

Yes, clubs have improved a lot over the last 25 years.

I see some ‘expert’ ranked each team for their draft ‘as it stands now’.
They gave Bores, Loins, FTPs all Bs. We got a C mostly due to having so few picks.
They don’t consider getting a backup QB for a 5th round move down part of the draft since that was not considered.
I would think that would have placed our draft on par with those others. But that might just be a homer take.

At this point no one knows the eventual outcome of the draft, agreed.

You can still debate/rate how the draft was handled. We knew right after KAMs first draft that it was a royal screwup, the players performances post draft just made it that much worse.
Guess my main question should trading for our back up QB during the draft be considered part of the draft. Considering we used draft picks to make the deal I would say yes.

While none of us give much credence to post draft grades, we do all enjoy reading them, and we have opinions. I like to look at what the team had available as draft capital at the end of the season, and how they transform that capital to a better team .

My gut feels is we did OK. The draft will could swing to very good, if our new WR performs well. It goes to bad if our new guard looks like recent picks at guard

I feel like there are two parts of the draft. How the team performed trading and selecting promising players and filling needs. The 2nd part is how good those players turned out to be.
I agree that the 2nd part won’t be fully known for years but the 1st part we have a decent idea about how well or badly that went, ala KAMs first draft.

Yep. I feel like we did good, made smart picks and decisions, and acquired a decent 3rd QB in the trade. How the players pan out, is anyone’s guess, but it was a good draft strategically IMO.

The trenches are solid through FA and their first rounder Jackson.

I actually like Zemaiah Vaughn, the CB from Utah. He has decent speed, and is 6’2″. He’s pretty lean though at 186 lbs. Could use another 15 to 20 pounds of muscle.

I can’t tell you the number of guys I know who still have their Pinewood Derby cars. I’m talking guys in their 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.

Just one of those moments in a boys life, that lives on forever. Great job and congrats to your son!

Just turned 61. Can confirm that when my mom passed it made me realize how many things I kept that I did not need. Started purging, realizing my kids do not need my old yearbooks and trophies and the derby car was one of many things I finally threw out.
I went from 3 boxes of things from my childhood to zero. Less for them to throw away.

Also found my pennant from the last Vikings game at the met, and a piece of a bench my father had broken off and brought home in his drunken craziness when the fans were tearing the place apart.

We traded for a QB, traded down to garner an extra pick, and ended up with 5 new guys (6 with the QB) out of 4 picks. Pretty good really.

We selected an offensive guard, a WR, an Edge guy, a LB, and a TE.

Finally got a TE.

Bartholomew is quick and makes plays as a route runner. He finds pockets in zone looks and uncovers when the quarterback gets flushed. He’s a powerful open-field runner after the catch, breaking tackles and looking to deliver contact. He tracks the ball well and is fast enough to make plays down the seam. Bartholomew is an aggressive lead blocker who can knock defenders back on contact and doesn’t stop until the echo of the whistle. — Steve Muench

We have to take these player descriptions with a little grain of salt. They are all positive renditions of a player, so we will see if he can cut it on the field with the pro’s.

If he turns out to be “as advertised” then we’ll all be happy.

Kobe King… LB

King is a two-year starter who had a career-high 97 tackles in 2024. He’s a tough interior run stopper with the core and upper-body strength to stack bigger blockers. He’s quick enough to shoot some gaps and he makes some plays in the backfield. He chases with good effort and is a powerful tackler. King closes well breaking on passes in coverage and can limit production after the catch. — Steve Muench

Golfing was interesting. Played Braemar for the first time. Shot a 50 on the front 9.
The back 9 was worser.
I was checking my phone while golfing, and saw the Vikings had two picks in the 4th
Really expected them to take Sanders as QB vs trading for Howell. Did not see that coming. I am sure Howell will be a better teammate, I was just thinking best player available and possible future trade bait.

I know nothing. Except I now am ordering pizza.

Glad you played some golf, and hopefully had some fun. I have a tee time at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. Might only play 9 holes depending on the heat. Playing a course where water is in play on every hole. I usually carry three golf balls for a round, but tomorrow I’ll throw a fourth in the bag.

Lost one ball, found 4, all nicer than what I play.
This was my first round. I did par two par fours with making 6 foot putts, and had some good shots, but absolutely no consistency. Played a par 3 two weeks ago.

By end of May I expect to be in the mid 90s again. Not sure if I will break 90 this season or not. I did get over 11k steps in, so the workout for the day is finished.
Time for pizza, an adult beverage, and tv.

I gotta stock up on Gatorade or something for tomorrow’s round. My wife is already telling me to hydrate. Gotta be careful with the heat.

If I break 90 on this course it will be a very good round. Very tight course with trouble everywhere. I’m gonna play very strategic golf tomorrow.

Since we are in town for the eye appointments, my wife is dragging me all over. I’m now sitting in the Ross Dress for Less parking lot while she is next door at Jo Ann Fabrics. At least I got to go to the men’s store first where I got a Harris Tweed 100% wool herringbone jacket. I feel like an English detective

He went through a little slump in the middle of the year, then got it back together. I reserve judgement on the allegations.

Tucker might be the greatest long-distance field goal kicker in NFL history. He holds the league record for the longest made field goal at 66 yards, and his 63 field goals from 50-plus yards is the second-most of any kicker since 1991. He has an 89.1% success rate on his kicks — which is the highest in NFL history. Tucker is an eight-time All-Pro, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a Super Bowl champion as well.
