Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts
First, a billion thanks to Surly for covering the weekend thread. Life got in the way for me toward the end of last week.
We’ve been in a drought up here for what seems like forever, but we got several inches last week, and it doesn’t seem to want to stop. We were supposed to have our first baseball practice last night, but it was cold and raining, so practice was cancelled. Tomorrow night is our second scheduled practice, but the rain is supposed to continue through Tuesday night, so hopefully we can finally get on the field on Wednesday, the next practice on the schedule. I’m not going to complain about the moisture, because we need it badly, but the timing sure sucks. I love coaching baseball, one of the highlights of my year.
Kiddo is stoked to go to Justin Jefferson’s youth football camp on Saturday. We’re heading toward Minneapolis on Friday after school (kiddo’s last day of school for the year, he’s also happy about that), gonna stay somewhere between here & Minneapolis that night, then finish the journey on Saturday morning & get there well before the 4 pm start time. We’re gonna stay in Minny that night, then head back homeward on Sunday morning.
Not much out there for football news. Purdy got a new massive deal, the Vikings signed all their draft picks, and there isn’t much else out there. Antonio Brown made the headlines again, because he was arrested…….again. I still think that cheap shot hit by Vontaze Burfict did something to his brain, it seems like that was a turning point for his mental state, and it’s gotten progressively worse.
Vikings News
The Vikings signed Donovan Jackson and the rest of their 2025 draft class, per Vikings.com.
Vikings.com looks over the 2025 Minnesota Vikings schedule.
NFL News
Brock Purdy signed a massive contract extension with the 49ers, a five-year deal for $265 million, per NFL.com. Quite a leap only a few years after being the final player selected in the 2022 NFL draft, good for him!
Caleb Williams allegedly tried to avoid being drafted by the Bears (who can blame him?) in 2024, and wanted to go to the Vikings, details from CBS Sports.
The Bears are eyeing the suburbs in their search for a new location for their stadium, per ESPN. Probably a good idea since the city of Chicago is basically a war zone.
Media Selection
Antonio Brown is back in the spotlight!
Thread Guidelines
- Keep politics to a minimum. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
- Be respectful and civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument, not the poster.
- Keep the NSFW language/pictures to a minimum. We don’t want anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
- To summarize, behave like adults. Treat each other with respect, and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something, please do. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.
- Twitter sized version: Be cool to one another.
I’m feeling generous. I was listening to some of the comments from the great Governor of Minnesota at some graduation address. I’d love to donate some money to keep this guy talking and talking.
What a gift for Republicans.
Their poll numbers are in the 20s and dropping.
They get a positive reaction from their base/woke morons and think it is helping them.
Yes, keep it up. That playbook has to start working again soon.
And Hillary is back yapping too. What a gift for us. It’s like when things get tough for the Dems. their nut and most unlikeable ones become the most vocal.
Kind of a blessing really.
Every time one of the idiots opens their mouths it another person converted into a MAGA supporter.
Keep it up indeed.
Now I want one.
Just leave Joe alone.
You can’t criticize him.
He has cancer ya know.
Was Biden really getting chemo treatments at all of his Beach Weekends?
Yep, and recovering from it. That would explain the early bedtimes and in and out of cognizance.
The NBA will have either a first time champion or a champion that hasn’t won since 1973 (Knicks).
I seen this weekend, the last time the NY Knicks made it to the Conference Finals Jalen Brunson’s dad (Rick Brunson) played for the team.
Another video I seen this weekend; Brian O’neil and Donte DiVincenzo, played on the same high school basketball team.
Seen, saw – they are interchangeable, maybe, maybe not.
That reminds me of one of my favorite movies.
-“I went to Pike’s Peak and I clumb it.”
—“You did what to Pike’s Peak?”
-“I clumb it.”

Well worth the watch
Grammarian vs Errorist – a supervillain showdown
the Knicks are the Dallas Cowboys, of the NBA…

Both to move ahead or behind them.

Indians.
Looking at weather. Tonight and tomorrow may be a washout.
Lets get er done. Detroit is going to start losing eventually here too.
All I can say is that the northern half of the country is a bunch of pansies for having no NHL teams left.
Dallas, Carolina, Florida is the best we can do??????
Snowbirds?
Exact same lineup for the conference finals as last year.
It’s been working so far…I don’t see how Edmonton can get past the Stars. No way I’d bet on the Oilers.
What do you see as the Oilers’ biggest weakness against the Stars?
Special teams. Oilers scored one PP goal vs LV, and the PK was shit.
Dallas PP 11/38 vs Jets, 37/43 on the PK. That 29%/86% differential would be the difference in the series. I hope that Dallas regresses and Edmonton progresses to the mean, which would make a closer series. As always, the timing of a PP goal is key. A PP goal given up at the end of a 5-1 drubbing is much different than a third period PP goal to take the lead with 4 minutes left on the clock.
PS Toronto and Winnipeg…
Saw this in a story about Brock Purdy’s contract…….
To work on Tuesdays during the season, which almost all of them do.
Pretty much this. I am salaried, I have some production support duties. I worked 6 hours yesterday on a Sunday. Wife was angry. I told her I could quit and let her find a way to make more money, or she could relax and let me finish the work I needed to do.
I could do the minimum, and either get replaced or outsourced. Or, I do the job I am paid to do and complete tasks to the best of my ability. There are trade offs.
My entire career in IT has required me to spend time during the evenings and weekends learning new things, just to keep my skills relevant and marketable.
Our former QB is a slacker in that regard. (I know, not Tuesday).
At least he is able to get his stated wish, and retire a
Redskin VikingFalcon.I am (was) a. bit of an enigma on this issue. For the better part of 25 years worked 70 hour weeks. But at the same time, as a disciple of Peter Drucker, never evaluated a subordinate on effort
We all have trade offs.
For most Americans, the trade off is less money to pay bills.
When you are a pro athlete, or other high earners, it’s about commitment to being the best at your profession or doing other things.
Must be nice to tell work to go pound sand and not have to worry about it.
I’m getting real close to telling work to go pound sand. I may still worry about it sometimes.
I’m close as well.
But that’s because it’s age and being tired.
That is pretty much the point I reached.
I actually didn’t have a problem going to work, I had a problem going to work in Prison.
Looked at part time work once I retired but it was problematic in Calif, with Social Security and I didn’t need the money. Plus the Pandemic started right after I retired.
I probably would be ok with working for another year or so however my fourth quarter is very busy every year. I am at the age that I don’t want to deal with the stress of it anymore. If I could just work the other 3 quarters, I probably would for a little bit.
I wish I could retire, but got another 25 years to go. I don’t mind my job, but I would much rather go hunting and fishing.
Same. Plenty of things I would rather do than work. I don’t get the people that work (or want to work) into their late 70’s, like a doctor I work with. But I think for him it’s that he’d be bored (he does travel a lot, but needs something to do). Certainly doesn’t need the money. But I could think of a lot of things to do besides work.
Well, for one thing, there is the personality types that get attracted to a physician career. Then there is the years of training and continuous medical education that allow you to hone your craft. There is huge satisfaction in having a comfort level with all this textbook knowledge crammed in your head. The problem is many physicians wait too long to retire, and have lost significant edge by the end of their career.
Also, there is something to be said for how nicely you are treated at work. An artificial environment where if something annoys you any of a number of people will respond to your complaint. Meanwhile at home if I get smegma on my hand while scrubbing the toilet no one reacts with great sympathy!
I think you nailed a few key points there, particularly the end of the first paragraph. There are things that are done poorly or missed now and everyone just kind of deals with because of his age, but he started the practice so everyone just gives him a ton of slack and carries the weight.
And I think that he loves that he’s king when he’s here. So you nailed it.
Yeah, I have more “work / life balance” than ever before in my life. I normally am under 50 hours per week. As a contractor, I got used to the 60 + hours and the clients were happy to pay me for the hours since most employees stop at 40 and refused to do any work on the weekends.
I feel like a part-timer now. With good benefits and decent PTO that make me feel better about earning less.
So to have more family and friends time and money you just have to be fatter?
Makes sense.
From time to time, my wife gets annoyed when I work (from home) on the weekend. I try to keep it to about an hour each day but in my business you have no control on how quickly the incoming hopper gets fed.
She understands that it makes my Mondays easier. From time to time I skip Saturday or Sunday, make a real weekend of it haha. It’s all about communication, try to wait until she is settled on the couch watching some series or movie on NF. Yesterday being a rainy day was perfect!
Then there is always the question of retirement…she is ready for me to retire any day now half the time, the other half of the time she is glad to get me out of the house. However, I love my job and truly am blessed with what all our hard work has resulted in here in Glendive.
I’ve said I will scale way back or retire at 62. That would be six years from today.
Happy birthday!
Thank you!
Holy fecal matter.
You have the same birthday as my younger brother.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Scaling back is probably a good option. When I say I am going to retire, I mean that I am retiring from my accounting job. I will continue to have my bookstore. However, with my bookstore, I am the boss so if I decide to take a day off or spend way too much time on here, I can do so. It’s an online only bookstore, so at any time I can put it on vacation and do whatever I want. The bookstore will give me something to do on the days that I am tired of goofing off.
Happy birthday MT
Thank you!
I will be 62 in August. Told the wife I am retiring at 72. Maybe.
Since I sit at a desk, I can work as long as I do not hate what I do. I like solving problems. We could maybe afford to retire in 5 years. I’d rather work a few more years and be able to retire “better” with more options as far as travel and maybe relocating. I may work part time and semi-retire anytime after 2030. Still planning on 2035.
I wonder how many Super Bowl trophies the Vikings will have by then?
In the next 10 years? I’d say 4, maybe 5.
I want to retire next year about this time.
I will be 64.
We will see how it goes.
Happy Birthday MT!
Thank you!
Thank you!
HBD MT. Retire as soon as possible. It’s a dog eat dog world. Short and fragile, you don’t know how many spins you will get. JMO.
Thank you, chief. You speak the same wisdom as my wife.
I would say there’s no chance he does “the bare minimum”. Having a day off is helpful for mind and body recovery, which pretty much all sports do for vets now (basketball, baseball, etc.). I don’t know why people are so hung up on that. I don’t think work ethic or that he didn’t prepare or try hard was ever an issue for him.
So you’re saying that he just isn’t good enough.
Sure, if that’s how you want to take it. I don’t think the product on the field was due to lack of preparation, caring, or work.
Biden lying about cancer now.
Whoever is releasing the info is lying.
Whether it’s Biden, his family, his propagandists……etc
This is real world “wag the dog”. Both parties are in on it. Perhaps it is because the people running the autopen don’t want any more questions about his mental state the last year of his presidency.
Just think, we were that close to having a second term with drooly and his prostate. At least his wife is a doctor.
So are you saying it is not as bad as reported?
or
Are you saying he has had it longer than ‘one month’.
It’s the latter, IMO.
He’s likely had it for several years.
^this^
Funny it comes out now…thought the white house health corps were all about keeping the american people informed? HAHAHA.
Funny it comes out now…what happened to the Hur tapes being in the news cycle? HAHAHA.
One thing I know a lot about is prostate cancer. Even Marc Siegel is in on the wag.
Exactly.
It’s either the prefect time to change the news cycle, or he has weeks or months to live.
You can’t just die of prostate cancer all of sudden.
My doctor told me that pretty much every guy, if he lives long enough, will have prostate cancer. He also said that it is really slow growing, so you are more likely to die of something else. So, either someone was lying or all of the presidential doctors should be fired for incompetence.
Yes and yes.
You can see aggressive prostate cancer in young men rarely…but no 82 year old gets prostate CA going from 0-60 in weeks.
Will Biden sue his White House doctor for malpractice?????
His wife as the primary physician probably overruled them.
Likely.
Dr Jill…..
I mean, he did say he had cancer like 2 years ago when telling his story about oil being on all the cars when he was a kid.
Yep.
Thanks for confirming my take.
Are they lying about its current state or that they didn’t know? That’s my question.
Yes.
Haha could be both. So they are claiming it is worse than it is, or it really is advanced and they supposedly didn’t know (which is more likely to be the lie, IMO)?
IMO the lie is that they have known for years, and are just now releasing it as if it’s “recent news”.
He’s likely dying from it.
Hormone treatment just delays death.
The latter.
Do you read JEM very often?
Emergency Medicine or Experimental Medicine? The answer is the same…no.
Got it.
Experimental.
My daughter is at MSK in NYC and helped publish a finding on
CD8+ T-Cells.
Is it this one, mentions MSK…

Regulatory T cells converted from Th1 cells in tumors suppress cancer immunity via CD39
Since it’s not linked I can’t really tell.
But this is one of them.

Cool! Thank you…I’ll read it.
Happy Monday.
May-tober continues. I went out running Saturday morning. I thought I was properly dressed, but my arms went numb.
Global WarmingClimate Change sucks.I had to wear a jacket to mow on Saturday. I guess I should have had gloves on also as my fingers got a little cold at times.
had a church spring cleaning day on saturday, and then i decided to mow my lawn after that, so i didn’t have to on sunday and i was so happy when sunday was a bit warmer, that i could just sit and chill instead of mow the lawn like most my neighbors were doing
Good morning, SKOL!

Twins winning streak ended, but the y were able to move up to 2nd place in the division, and 4th in the AL.
Timberwolves will be facing the Thunder, this should be a very good series. I am not confident in winning it though.
