Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

I’m doing my best to wrap up this week’s and next week’s work by the end of the day today, I’m pretty sure I’ll make it. I’d like to have some free time tomorrow, because we’re leaving for our mini-vacation on Sunday & there are some things we’d like to get done before we leave.

Fantasy Football League

I was hoping to actually start our fantasy football league on time this year, and we were thinking of giving everyone longer to pick, especially in the earlier rounds, and maybe even have an open chat turned on for those of you who want to use that feature. Throw some comments out there if you have thoughts on a time of day, or a specific day or time frame that you think would work best. I’ll try to be more active in comments and see what everyone thinks, we’ll figure something out. If anyone else is interested in joining, please let me know. It was a lot of fun last year, hopefully we can build on that this year. I’m new to this fantasy football stuff, so I’m learning on the fly.

Good Old Fashioned Justice doesn’t have all that stuff.
Should take about an hour, jury only needs 30m top.
Should even have time for him to visit the preacher man before we string him up at noon.

The 49ers placed Equanimeous St. Brown on injured reserve today due to a foot injury. St. Brown injured his foot during Thursday’s training camp practice, just two days after signing with the team after Andy Isabella (ankle) was let go. By being placed on IR, St. Brown will be forced to miss the entire 2025 season unless he reaches an injury settlement with San Francisco.

I thought teams could take guys off IR? The rules escape me.

Taylor Heinicke will start Sunday’s preseason game for the Chargers against the Saints, Trey Lance started the Hall of Fame Game and played deep into the second half, with both Heinicke and Justin Herbert being held out. Heinicke will now lead the second-string offense Sunday, followed by Lance and DJ Uiagalelei working with the third/fourth units. Heinicke seems like a favorite to enter Week 1 in the backup QB role, but there’s always some chance Lance could be tabbed instead. Heinicke and Lance signed similar one-year contracts this offseason.

Back in the day when I worked for a living, there was a rumor going around starting in January that I was going to be attending medical school that fall. I got called in the office and asked if I was going to be leaving and I said #1 that’s NOYB and #2 do you think me stupid as to tell you in January that I’m leaving in the fall (actually late July) so that I can be given all the crap shifts and extra call, etc. Boss said well congratulations if that’s the case, that’s all I wanted to say. Uh huh.

They got two weeks notice.

Now my contract says I have to give two months notice. When the time comes that’s what they’ll get.

My boss already had a pretty good idea of when I was going to retire. I just wanted to firm it up for her. I promised that I would train the next person. Plus, with the BBB we don’t know if we will lose any grants. If we do, I have volunteered to give up some of my work to the younger accountant that will probably be next in line to take over for the CFO in 5 years or so. If I walked in next week and they told me that I was done, it wouldn’t be ideal, but I would be ok with it.

Kevin Stefanski said Shadeur Sanders will play about 50 snaps in tonight’s preseason opener against the Panthers.

Joe Flacco will be rested while Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel continue to nurse hamstring injuries. Thus the Browns are left with only Sanders and recent signing Tyler Huntley to play QB. Stefanski said the rookie will play most of the game, with Huntley apparently scheduled to only come in toward the end.

It’s a nice opportunity for Sanders, although he’ll presumably be surrounded by fellow backups, and possibly facing Carolina’s defensive starters on the first drive or two.

Looks like Hendon Hooker will start tonight’s game for the Lions against the Falcons. Hooker is competing with Kyle Allen for the top backup spot behind Jared Goff. Allen started and played the first half of the Hall of Fame Game against the Chargers, while Hooker mustered just 18 passing yards and an interception in the second half of that 34-7 preseason loss. Hooker will likely get the first half of tonight’s game.

A Question for all the legal experts around here. Appears the law is changing.
So if my neighbor says something to me that I find offensive, I can throw him down, kick him in the head and gut several times,
He provoked me after all. Maybe I should just have got a gun and shot him.

You and NLV might want to review the Baltimore Judge’s ruling today where a young black man beat up two elderly gentlemen.
And I would be a thousand bucks the defense in the recent Cincinnati incident will be provocation from a racial slur. There’s already one council person saying the two (who were fighting against 12) deserved it.
And should they be found guilty they will merely get a weak hand slap.

He does but he’s getting to SB’s which puts him ahead of guys like Harbaugh (Ravens), McDermott and LaFleur. in my book.

True…
And ahead of Kneecaps Dan, Harbaugh (LaChargers) and our very own KO, to name a few.

I’d have to put those three guys way up there too. I do think John Harbaugh should be included due to his longevity and his teams always being in contention.

Weekend eve… I’m relaxing and tuned into the FedEx St Jude Championship. Had a great breakfast of scrambled eggs, waffle, and ham. Homemade waffle. Can you believe my wife got up and made the batter and everything for my breakfast? I was just going to eat some cereal, and she shooed me out of the kitchen, and went to cooking.

My brother was a coder. He started back in the mid 70’s when it was a pretty new endeavor. Made good money for a long time, and basically invested well. He retired about 10 years ago. He wrote all the code for a major telecommunications company’s billing system. Then he sold that code to other companies for their billing systems.

Seems like it was a good career choice for him.
I look back and like the Military/Law Enforcement choices I made.
They say ‘He who has the most toys when they die wins’, I disagree. “He who has the most ‘war stories’ when the die win’.
As Abe Lincoln said “don’t count the years in the life but the life in the years”

Oh and on a side note will AI be able to take over coding? Will they be able to write/change their own code?

will AI be able to take over coding?

Yes and No. I think that currently AI is being used a lot for rudimentary tasks that would normally fall to junior programmers.
We are at a “use it or get passed by” stage, where if you are not utilizing it at least as a productivity tool, you will probably be replaced.

I plan on working 10 more years. It is possible that AI will cause a drop in pay rates, and that could impact my decision. Someone still needs to watch the bots. Corporations have been outsourcing heavily since the 90s to keep pay rates down. AI is just the next cheapest labor. Until AI decides to eliminate all competition

Eventually they will win.

It is why so many young people are going in ‘physical careers’ like construction and such. Things AI won’t have as much impact on and can still offer a good salary.

Yep. You can get a CS degree and be a software engineer, and compete with people from India and China for entry level positions that pay less than managing a fast food place, or do something like HVAC where you start out making good money, and it gets better as your career advances.

Still, I can walk without pain most days (Arthritis is starting to be annoying) at 62, and my construction worker neighbor is struggling at 52 to keep doing his job.

My sister works in HR (remotely) and that seems an industry almost completely replaced by AI.

Given my interactions with HR at my shop the last fifteen years I can honestly see why.

HR in Commiformia is out of control.
We had people written up because they ‘misgendered’ a trans.
We had a couple of officers fired because they were joking about women (who doesn’t) and a third officer reported them because he was new and he was trained that if he didn’t he could lose his job.
Lots of examples, part of why I retired as soon as I could.

In my experience, HR has always been out of control. They have to try to justify themselves having a 40 hour per week job.

I guy I welded with for years ended up getting a job in HR. They created a very dumb rule, can’t remember exactly what it was, but I told him it was an unfair rule. His response was we don’t have to make it fair we just have to make it even.

Every time I call HR and ask them how to do something they send me a pdf and link to the page.

Oh you want to change a beneficiary, I’ll send you a page explaining how to do it.

Which is fine but not exactly the way to ensure job security.

My brother was a computer nerd and I was the action/adventure guy. Totally different personalities. His kids and grandkids love me because of all the countries I’ve lived in, and all the real life war stories I have. They attended my retirement and listened to a former four star friend and colleague talk about many of my career events.

Two brothers who lived two very different lives.

He made a lot more money and now is the definition of ‘Liberal Elite’. Two very different brothers.

Good point.
We were 4 brothers who grew up together.
Oldest was the Apple guy, me, then Construction/contractor brother who was helping a classmates dad flip houses while he was still in HS. And then the youngest who was sports/hunting/family and all around most loved. He passed before age 40.

Fantasy Football League. I would prefer around 6-7 PM for a start time of the draft. I think Labor Day or the Tues or Wed after labor day make the most sense to prevent drafting someone that is injured for the season. Anytime after week 3 of the preseason would be fine though.

I would not make the early rounds too long. Maybe 3 minutes each pick? Once you are past the first few rounds 1 minute is plenty. You could take a 15 minute break after the first 3 rounds for taunting, trash talking, and beverage refills, and then have 1 minute for each pick after. That would take around 90 minutes for the first three rounds, and the rest would take about the same after the break.

My two cents.

Also, we are all still waiting for our swag from seasons 1 + 2

Sean Ryan asks Father Dan Reehil whether we are in the end times. Enjoy!

We are studying Revelation in our bible study and discussed this very question last night. I’ve been thinking we are in the “end times” for 40 years, so at this point, I have no clue.

Someone is hitting the sauce early over at NFL.com, they have Justin Fields and Cayleb Williams as candidates to break out in 2025.

They are totally clueless.
Irv Smith Jr will be the breakout player in 2025 after 10 years.

i can GUARANTEE you, if someone knows when the end is happening, they are WRONG…

i bet most if not all of the Christians in Rome thought it was the end times when Nero was lighting his garden with burning Christians.

my opinion on it all, live your life ready for when Christ comes again, and you should be good.

The “end times” in Scripture are the whole New Testament era. That’s what Pentecost signaled. (Acts 2:16-21)

Jesus’ message is: You don’t know when the Last Day will be, so be ready.

Revelation is a vision given that describes these “last days” (the end times) in symbolic and repeating fashion. The visions overlap each other and give us more insight into the spiritual battle going on. The whole point of the vision: Jesus wins, so don’t fear what you’re going through.

Also, almost all of the imagery is borrowed from the Old Testament, so don’t forget to use that and its context as the “key” to its meaning.
