Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts
Lots of hype around this team, with the roster overhaul the last two seasons. Still moving pieces around, and rumors about Adam Thielen returning. I think his wife was annoying when they left for more money, but he was always a good to extremely good receiver and seems like a decent guy. Vikings need another WR, either a younger guy to step up, or trade for someone.
JJ and how he plays will have the biggest impact on this season. I try to temper my enthusiasm, since he has not played 1 down in the NFL yet. Cannot help it, I have the purple sunglasses on, and I have bought in.
Roster cuts need to be finalized today, so I expect a few surprises from different teams. Time for the popcorn, and enjoy the show!

Hey Kathy, yes, there are lots of new faces. Couple good changes on the defensive and offensive lines this year I really like. I think we’ll be looking for more CB’s as the dust settles from other teams cuts too. Not over yet.

I’m a little old for this stuff, but see a couple of candidates from around here.
I played with a guy once who went through 9 or 10 beers during the round. I asked him if he needed a ride home, and he said “Nah, I’ll call my wife. She knows the drill”.

Was in a bar in Dublin and there was this old guy who had been belting them down for hours. Walking out he sort of bumped into me and I said, hay, your not going to drive home? He replied. of course I am mon I’m too drunk to walk.
Laughing… no, you hadn’t told me that, but having lived in the U.K. for 3 years, I can believe it.
My niece and her step mom had a golf course accident this summer at their private camp site on the Kentucky River. They weren’t drinking, though, the accelerator got stuck while they were going downhill and around a curve, and they hit a tree. They weren’t seriously injured, but pretty beat up. My niece missed a week of work.
Oops, meant golf cart.
I’m glad they’re OK. I haven’t seen any accidents on courses, but I’ve seen people drive into a ditch or mud hole and had to help them get unstuck a number of times.
That AZ dust storm something. Seen lots of weather but not that.
I was stationed in AZ back in the early 80’s. Saw a few of those dust storms, pretty impressive. However, saw a lot worse in the Middle East.

Guy I worked with in Spokane was fishing Rimrock lake I believe he said in western WA when Mt. St. Helens erupted. Far off rumble like thunder and then day went dark, ugliest looking clouds he had ever seen, pulling the boat out when the ash started to fall.

The Cover 3 defense is one of the more popular zone-based defensive alignments in football.
At one time, it was thought of as only a defense that youth football teams and teams at the high school level would utilize often in a game.
However, that idea changed over the years, starting with the Seattle Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” defense utilizing it all the way to a Super Bowl title.
The concept of the Cover 3 defense is that seven defenders drop back into coverage in two distinct zones:
a. Four players covering the short and middle zone.
b. Three players covering the deep zone.
This defense protects against the deep passing plays quite well, but it’s also good against the run because the strong safety lines up near the linebackers and closer to the line of scrimmage than he normally does.
It breaks down quickly though when an offense runs a 4+ overload formation. Then you end up with no CB’s to cover two receivers.
Interesting history lesson.

I still think Chandler could be a good backup. He sometimes misses holes, but he has the burst and strength to get good yards, especially in the screen game. I think he’s been victim of some unfortunately poor blocking when he’s in and also some penalties that have pulled back some 20+ yard gains.
Irv Smith has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle, and could be placed on injured reserve. He played 34 offensive snaps this preseason for the Texans and secured all six of his targets for 52 yards.
Very surprising he caught all 6 targets. His hands are not good. Still makes me laugh that so many people here thought he would be good. I could see that he didn’t have the skills to be good, but people wanted to believe.
I certainly hoped he would succeed, because of course, if he succeeded the team succeeded. Unfortunately you were right. He’s never really achieved at the level folks thought he would.
Perhaps one of the few things I can say I was right on lol. Just never passed the eye test for me, and his drops early on in his career made me a non-believer.

The Vikings are headed towards having $28-$30 million in 2025 cap space after cuts and PS signings.
The trade of Blackmon freed up $1.2 million in both 2025 & 2026 cap space.
2026 cap space has now improved from around -$65 million to currently -$39 million over the last week or so.
I think KAM is doing a good job clearing up future cap with these trades.

Thielen’s 2024 PFF was 76.4 – pretty damn good for an old guy.
Osborn’s was 52.2, Thielen > Osborn.
Since Theilen is under contract, I’d argue Theilen is the better player.
Osborn will be cheaper.
Hard to say, players Adam’s age fall off a cliff quickly, he was still relatively productive but also more likely to get injured, Osborne wouldn’t cost draft capital but has never been as good as Adam, really depends on what Carolina is demanding in a trade
Not to be a penis, but I can’t believe we are seriously considering giving up something for Thielen. Guy struggled to get open here in 2022, I have my suspicions a 35 year old will have picked up speed or durability in the intervening three years.

I’m pretty sure he was the guy who helped Harrison Smith go to the bathroom, though, so we’re going to want a replacement who is comfortable helping senior citizens in that kind of scenario. That kind of compassion is not easy to replace.

In 2023, Blackmon finished third among rookie cornerbacks in overall and PFF coverage grade at 71.7. He was also the only rookie to play 400 snaps and not miss a tackle.
He and Ivan Pace made the PFF all rookie team, while Addison didn’t.
He suffered an ACL injury in 2024 and was out all season. So he is young, and has shown some potential.

He is only 5’11” and 178 lb’s so not the biggest guy on the field. I’m partial to guys who are a little bigger who can take on big receivers.
My take on him is he isn’t terrible. He can play at the NFL level. He’ll be a starter.

Because you saying your take is he can play at the NFL level and he’ll be a starter, would suggest Kwesi doesn’t think so…..BUT perhaps he just thinks….he can be a starter, just not for us. if he values a 6th round pick for him, perhaps he doesn’t have the highest opinion of him. But i realize coaches/Gm’s cut players not because they think they won’t be able to make it in the NFL, but maybe just doesn’t fit what their team is doing and says good luck you’ll catch on somewhere else maybe but….you’re dead to us here.
Well, I think comparing me to KAM is a stretch, but the fact that he was traded rather than cut indicates he is seen as having some potential. KAM seems to be stacking up draft picks at the moment, which is interesting. We currently have 9 picks in 2026 plus at least 3 comp picks.
well i wasn’t meaning to compare you TO him, but just bring up the thought process that when a player gets cut, it doesn’t mean that the GM thinks they suck and won’t make it.

– trade Howell (i didnt like them acquiring him, seems like it was a desparation move)
– Trade Phillips ( we should have gotten more and i hope the young guys can step into his place)
– trade Blackmon ( a weak cb room, looks a bit weaker)
Will there be any other surprises?

How good are our top 3 corners?? Yes behind them we have nothing…but are our top 3 adequate? Below average? etc. I really have no idea.
I just don’t want a repeat of the Williams Wall days when teams decided it wasn’t worth it to try to run against our front 7 when passing against our secondary was much easier.
According to PFF we have 1 CB in the top 32…Murphy Jr. checks in at 29. Given that info I am going to suggest our top 3 corners are likely well below league average.
