Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

Had a great night last night helping coach the kids. There were only two of us coaches there (other coach is a good guy, lives up the street), but we had a good time. It’s getting me back into shape quickly, those 10 & 11 year olds can run.

I was happy to see that the Vikings added Thielen yesterday, I was very happy with both the additions of Wentz and Thielen. I think both bring positive and varied experience into the locker room, and have both played at a very high level, Thielen for obviously much longer. A lot of people focus on Theilen’s history with the area and with the Vikings, but Thielen can still ball at 35 years old, and will be a solid addition to the wide receiver room.

I see this as a fairly big loss for the Panthers, especially considering Bryce Young was just starting to show a little something last year, and it seemed like he was at his best when Thielen was in the lineup. I’m not sure why the Panthers made this move.

I don’t expect any other major moves unless the team finds a way to acquire an improvement at cornerback.

3 votes for “I secretly love the Packers” on yesterday’s poll. LOL

Vikings News

Vikings.com has details on the Adam Thielen trade that brought him back to the Vikings.

Also, the Vikings begin to form their practice squad, from Vikings.com.

NFL News

CBS Sports has a practice squad tracker where you can see all the latest moves across the NFL.

Colts GM Chris Ballard said the Colts won’t trade Anthony Richardson despite interest from other teams. Ballard seems like a poor GM. I don’t mean in this instance because I think it’s the right move to hang on to Richardson, I just think he’s a poor GM in general.

The NFL has suspended Chiefs WR Rashee Rice for the first 6 games of the season, per NFL.com.

From the article:

Rice, who is now prohibited from practicing with the Chiefs as well, is suspended without pay and effective immediately, becoming eligible for reinstatement on Oct. 13, following the Chiefs’ Week 6 game against the Detroit Lions.

Rice’s suspension stems from the 25-year-old’s conviction for, along with another driver, causing a multi-vehicle chain-reaction collision on March 30, 2024, in Dallas. Rice was sentenced to 30 days in jail on July 17. Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury.

Media Selection

I thought this was interesting. I’m not a fan of the Federal Reserve system, and I think it’s been the main catalyst to the demise of our country’s financial health, so this piqued my curiousity. I’ll be up-front, I haven’t looked into this guy much, and it’s the first of his videos I’ve watched, so I take it with a grain of salt, but it’s interesting.

My wife is rather snake phobic, frequently sends me pics of snakes around our place or that she encounters walking the dog or hiking around. Almost universally they are garter snakes, North American racers, or gopher snakes. She’s like oh phew I thought it was a rattlesnake.

This afternoon she sent me a pic of one lounging on the side of the shouse. Uh…that’s a prairie rattlesnake. I called her after I finished my procedure, asked what she did…killed it with a shovel!

At least the Vikings have an offensive line and hopefully a qb that knows how to get rid of the ball. Caleb Williams is probably in a corner right now sucking his thumb.

They’re paying him $12 million a year more than Jefferson. That’s ridiculous. Who impacts a game more, a pass rusher or the best WR in the league?

Most teams rank edge rusher as the second most important position on the field, after QB. Wide receiver traditionally ranks around 5th.

Depends on the QBs. If the QB can sling the ball and handle pressure and keep a play alive with his feet, the WR will have more of an impact.

If the edge rusher is rushing a QB that cannot handle pressure well, it will be game over for the offense and the DE has made a bigger impact.

We have seen this on our team through history.

There’s a good book I listened to on audio book out there called The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross by John M. Allegro. Kind of ties in how mushrooms were used 1000s of years ago and might explain some things that are referenced to in the bible and why they were regarded as sacred across the world and cultures. Of course the Catholic church had a problem with it but, still a good read.

The book I ran across is, Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower’s Guide by O. T. Oss & O. N. Oeric. I haven’t read it as I am putting it in by bookstore inventory and don’t have time to read everything I list, but it intrigued me because of some other stuff I’ve heard, so I did a quick search to read a few short articles.

How many Super Bowls do you remember that were won because of an edge rusher? I remember Von Miller being very good, but the Broncos also had Peyton. Jordan Love is not Peyton and none of their receivers are anywhere close to DT.

JRobert
JRobert

Wasn’t Miller the MVP of that SB and at that game Manning couldn’t even throw the ball 10 yards.
The real problem with Parson there, you have to use resources to stop him and that makes it easier for others on the defense.

bowbunch

28 August 2025 4:39 pm

Yeah, but that’s the only example I can think of off the top of my head and there have been lots of very dominant pass rushers. Plus $47 million a year is insane and what did he do for Dallas? Pretty sure they were still bottom of the league in run defense last year.

JRobert
JRobert
Reply to  bowbunch
28 August 2025 4:48 pm

Can’t speak to the money. Recall Charles Haley for both Cowboys and Niners almost simple handedly winning championship games.
I don’t think its so much as edge rusher per se, but if the defense has a dominate player like this. like Aaron Donald, you have to double him every play or he can kill every drive.
This doesn’t mean we can’t beat them though.

bowbunch

So the first reference you can come up with was from 30+years ago. That’s my point. Does he make them better? Yes. With what they are paying him and Love though, I’m not going to lose sleep over this.

I didn’t try real hard. But he is a player the calibre of Aaron Donald ( not quite 30 years ago) and you will have to have a blocking scheme in place to account for him.
I’m not losing sleep either as KOC can come up with a plan to handle this.

T.J. Hockenson is recovering from an apparent groin injury suffered during practice on August 2, 2025, which followed a significant knee injury (ACL and MCL) in December 2023 that sidelined him for the rest of that season and much of the next year. While he had returned to play in 2024 after his knee injury, the recent lower-body issue in August 2025 has again caused him to miss practice time. The Vikings are evaluating the severity of this new injury, which has a list of associated issues including leg, hip, and back problems.

I don’t know if Williams has NFL level processing speed Surly. He’s good when he knows exactly where he wants to go with the ball, and has a good opportunity to deliver it. When that is not the case, he seems to struggle. Take his first read away, and put some pressure on him, and he is a far lesser QB in my opinion.

Saw that the Minnesota Trans shooter regretted his decision to transition.

Transitioning often makes their depression and mental anguish worse, not better.

These people need help, support, love, etc…they do not need to be talked into doing a transition.

I know an ex special forces guy I served with who transitioned using the military care system. He is a big person, around 6’4″. Not fat in any way shape or form. He had surgeries, and for a good ten years, lived his life as a woman. I heard recently he transitioned back. Don’t ask me how he did that. He was not attractive in any way as a woman, and it was always awkward when I was around him. For both of us.

I have no idea why he transitioned in the first place.

Laughing is good for us.
Booze is definitely not healthy, but it is a short term solution some people take to feel better. I know I want a beer or three sometimes when watching this team. And while it is absolutely a carcinogen, I still drink booze on occasion.

I was never into smoking pot. Tried it as a teenager, and it just made me fall asleep. I did get the giggles a bit.

Fast forward to a 60 year old Surly, who took some Advil because the knees hurt. well, cannot have booze. Family came over for dinner, and one family member offered me a THC selzer. Zero calories, felt very relaxed, no hangover.

According to by brother-in-law “The Colonel” the military actually tracked the success rate of transitioning soldiers in terms of decreased suicide rates and increased general happiness amongst its “Trans” population.

The result – transitioning soldiers did not result in reduced suicide rates or an increased happiness score. The military has since tried its best to suppress its findings because it didn’t fit what the woke narrative.

Certainly that is my personal anecdotal experience. I’ve known 5 people in my life who transitioned. Two transitioned back, two committed suicide, and one is in therapy.

Again, I have no idea what drove these men to transition. None of them were attractive as females.

If Thielen doesn’t play much — presumably because of an injury — Minnesota’s 7th-Rounder would morph into a 6th-Rounder. It’s conditional.

Charlotte Observer‘s Mike Kaye tweeted, ‘Per league source, conditions for the 7th round pick heading to Vikings from Panthers: Becomes a 2026 sixth-round pick if Adam Thielen is not active for 10 games or not on 53-man roster for 14 games. On a side note I don’t consider compound bows to be very sporting at all. I bet at least one fellow Montanan on here would disagree, but I got in a spirited argument with one of my partners once where he was flipping out about the potential of crossbows being used during archery season, not sporting, but of course to be up in a stand set up on private land ten feet from the only water for miles around with a compound bow whose pull is about 10 pounds is diabolically difficult hunting.

Two things, first I’m talking about elk, and second elk are far easier to harvest during bow season because of the rut…and because there are fewer hunters out there pushing them around (and onto private land). Virtually unheard of in these parts for a bowhunter to not harvest an elk in a desirable district.

OK Surly… let’s rumble. Tell me the games that Cousins was in garbage time and “padded his stats”. That’s one of the the biggest false narratives on Cousins, ever.

And just to help you out, I’ll give you the real definition of garbage time:

Garbage time refers to the period in a sports game when the outcome is no longer in doubt, typically occurring towards the end of the game. During this time, teams often substitute their starters for backups, and the focus shifts from competitive play to allowing less experienced players to gain game experience.”

Cousins singular trait throughout his career has been keeping his teams in a game. That is, within a score or two, and still having a chance at the end of the game. I can think of only two games in his entire career where he led a drive at the end of a game, and scored a meaningless TD.

Surly Viking
Admin
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan

No need to rumble. I know you love Kirk and in your eyes he can do no wrong. You are also not changing my mind. We agree on a lot of things, but Kirk is not one of them, and never will be.

You know I have always felt that Kirk is a very good QB that has been grossly overpaid since his first Vikings contract. Those overpaid contracts prevented this team from filling a roster with talent. Having a shit GM made things worse. Having a stubborn head coach made things worse. Having a constantly changing offensive coaching staff made things worse. I can agree with those points you make.

I am not going to change your mind, and History has proven and will continue to prove that Kirk is, indeed, a good QB that got paid. He got paid a lot. And still, he has yet to produce the success teams were hoping for when they paid him.

He is in the MoneyBag HOF for sure.

Right now, he cannot beat out Michael Penix for a job, so he gets paid to hold a clipboard. He gets paid a LOT to hold that clipboard.

Good for him.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  Surly Viking

Reporters aren’t so sure about that. I saw an article where a reporter who had been watching camp noted that Cousins looked like he was doing better with the second team offense going against the first team defense, than Penix was doing with the first team offense against the second team defense. He asked the OC if he was convinced Penix was better than Cousins. The OC answered in typical coach speak. He did not say he believed Penix is better than Cousins.

The fact is, Penix isn’t in Cousins league (yet) when it comes to playing the position of QB. He is a big strong athlete, who can throw a ball right now. He is years away from being able to decipher NFL defenses. Remember Mahomes said it wasn’t until his fourth year that he started being able to read defenses. Yes, he can make reads. All NFL QB’s can make reads. It’s the next level he lacks. Cousins sees the defense pre-snap, and from years of experience and film study, he knows what that defense is most likely to do post snap, and what he needs to process to know where to go with ball. It remains to be seen if Penix has the discipline, and ability to put in the hundreds of hours of study required to know what he’s facing on the field, and know where he needs to go with the ball.

It is totally about mental illness. Normal, sane guys don’t go get their peckers chopped off.

This is the issue. You’re exactly right. It isn’t about guns. Guns in the hands of sane people with good morals is a good thing because of evil in this world.

And this is what people who support trans ideology have sacrificed. Refusing to say it’s a mental illness fails to address the heart of the issue, so they have to go after symptoms (use of guns).

I think this response to Paski’s dismissal of Prayer was about perfect’

“Your party encourages mental illness in telling men they can be women, then encourages them identify as victims when the world does not indulge their perverse fantasies, and then screams ‘prayers are not enough’ when insane transgenders shoot up schools,” journalist Megan Basham said. “Prayer is vital. So is a mentally balanced populace that recognizes reality.”

From his manifesto:

“I only keep [the long hair] because it is pretty much my last shred of being trans. I am tired of being trans, I wish I never brain-washed myself,” 23-year-old transgender man Robin (Robert) Westman wrote in the manifesto, which was translated by NYPost journalists.

I blame our schools, dem politicians, media and gullible parents for destroying the mental health of our kids.

They will howl out their talking points/narrative unless the truth doesn’t support it then they will hide/distract from the truth so as to not interfere with their talking point/narrative.

One week till the first game of the regular season. Dallas and Philly in Philly on Sept 4th. I’m not sure if it’s actually a Thursday Night Football game, even though it’s on Thursday night. It’s going to be broadcast on NBC. TNF is on Prime video.

First game is usually picked up nationally. NFL wants people hooked before they make them subscribe to every streaming platform just to watch football.

Yup. Same. Football. Junkie.

I rewatched every game last year on NFL+ in the offseason. Not just every Vikings game. Every. Game. Just throw it on in the background most nights/weekends.

Constantly watching highlight videos on NFL+ as well. NFL Top Ten, NFL Films Presents, Peyton’s Places…..

Just shoot it in my veins, my neck….

JUNKIE.

That first “7 hours of commercial free football” is going to hit like crack. Unless I’m taking my bow for a walk anyway.

Probably not eventually, but I think so for this year. By next year it will be Stephen A with some other moron and a minute of commercials every 30 seconds.

I asked Google “Will Redzone still be commercial free?”

AI gave me this answer:

No, NFL RedZone is not guaranteed to remain commercial-free, as the network tested ads in December 2024 and the host, Scott Hanson, removed “commercial-free” from his catchphrase for the remainder of the 2024 season and into 2025. While the ads were initially described as a one-time test, a league source indicated that companies had been interested in advertising on the platform for years, suggesting the potential for future ad integration.

Hopefully ESPN will realize what made the product great.

Knowing them, though, they won’t. They didn’t do that with SportsCenter.

Their parent company also didn’t do that with Star Wars, Marvel, etc.

So they will have to make a corresponding move to add Teielen the roster.
If they cut a WR would then add them to the PS? They already have 4 on there.
Are they going to add one and release one of the ones already there?

Who else might they cut from the 53?
