Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

Got back from Denver late last night, long drive but a great trip. The Vikings play again tonight after a short week, it says the game starts at 7:15. Let’s hope the Vikings can turn it around tonight, and get the offense firing on all 8 cylindars. Hell, firing on 6 would be an improvement.

Vikings and NFL News

From Vikings.com, a week 8 Vikings @ Chargers game preview, the Vikings @ Chargers final injury report, and how to watch, listen, and stream tonight’s game.

Yahoo Sports also has a preview of tonight’s game.

CBS Sports looks at 9 players who would benefit from a change of scenery prior to the trade deadline.

Baker Mayfield says he does NOT expect clean play from the Saints, saying “I do not like them”, per NFL.com. Smart dude, another reason to like Mayfield.

Media Selection

Great video here, I can’t remember which of you shared this one the first time. Whoever it was, blame them.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics to a minimum. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be respectful and civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument, not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW language/pictures to a minimum. We don’t want anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • To summarize, behave like adults. Treat each other with respect, and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something, please do. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.
  • Twitter sized version: Be cool to one another.

Good thing McCarthy is sitting.

It very much could be Justin Skule at LT and Walter Rouse at RT for the Vikings tonight.

Chargers Edge Khalil Mack is ramping back up from injury and is expected to have close to a full workload tonight.

It might get ugly tonight guys and this doesn’t include Blake Brandel probably getting the start at Center again who led the team in allowed pressures last week.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda. Both might start, both might sit, one or the other may start, they may start and be on a snap count restriction.
If one sits then a TE can be used to slow down/help on that side. Not ideal of course but a little soon to call for panic as well.

SKOLOHOLICS PICK ‘EM AND SURVIVAL LEAGUE UPDATE WEEK ??

I have not figured out what week it is yet. The time after harvest is usually a disorientating temporal vortex. For example, I go to work, and I get to go home at 4 p.m. “Only eight hours?” I ask. “This is a cakewalk!”

Then I go home and fall asleep, get up, stare into the void, go to bed and repeat. It takes me awhile to find rhythm again.

But this is what happened in the exciting world of Pick ‘Em! DE, Kirko and Lasallegrouse were the top scorers of the week. I was pretty happy with my picks. I only got three wrong. Unfortunately, my confidence points allocation sucked, but so many of the games could have went either way in my head.

Overall, Freezy and Little Fishin hang out at the bottom. They haven’t been getting all of their picks in. Don’t they know this is the future? They could just have AI do it!

Bow, PA, me and JacksonVike are in the next clump. Frankly, we need to do better and hit the 600 point barrier if we want to be taken seriously. It is unmanning to be where we are. My wife has even noticed. Last night she said, “You seem a lot more feminine to me lately. Please, sleep on the couch…in the garage…preferably at your mother’s house.”

Little does she know, that is fine with me. My mom knows how I like my eggs.

Meanwhile, NoDak, Let’s Fish, Lasallegrouse, DE and Surly are all fairly close to one another. Any of them could leap into the top spot with a good week and a corresponding bad week by those above them. This is certainly made them more attractive, as well. My wife also said, “Why can’t you look more like those guys?”

Sorry, hon, not all of us can be a 10, which is what you get if you added all of them together. See what I did there? That’s called a roast.

ManlyPurple and Kirko are in the top spots. Can they hold on to them? We will find out starting tonight as our Vikes take on the Herberts!

Genius Pick of the Week went to DE. He was the only one who got the Bengals over the Steelers. Meaculpa. I should never underestimate Zombie Flacco. That guy is good for a number of wins until he eventually flames out from being, you know, old. But if the season is only six games long, he is your guy.

Iconoclast Picks were Kirko and NoDak with Dolphins over Browns and Surly and Me with Bucs over Lions. What can I say…I really like Baker…maybe even more than Herbert.

Traitor picks were DE, Kirko, Lasallegrouse, Surly and Me. We all took the Eagles over the Vikes. I was honestly surprised so many took the Vikes. I thought we would all be traitors. Heck, I took the Eagles with 13 confidence points. So did DE.

The question this week is how to pick the Vikes. I am not going to spoil my decision yet because I haven’t made it. It is next on my agenda.

Meanwhile, no one was eliminated in Survival this week. Manly and PA remain the only ones without a strike. DE, Let’s Fish and Me continue to hang in there with one strike.

GET YOUR PICKS IN BEFORE THE GAME TONIGHT FOR BOTH LEAGUES! I AM GOING TO GO DO IT NOW…

so even though i’m a city boy, i have helped with my father in laws harvests a couple of times.

i would go out there for a week and work with him. I didn’t want the stress of running the combine, so i was in the trucks getting loaded up with wheat, driving them down tiny washed out trails, to the bins and unloading the wheat, then driving back up and getting loaded etc etc.

i enjoyed it, and that was truly hard work. i slept so hard each night.

I went from an F grade semi driver to a C+ this year because usually my brother drives those. Repetition helps.

I can still screw up the downshifting, though. Once I figured out not to use the clutch but just shift by RPMs, it helped.

On the old grain trucks, I clutched all the time, but it is easier to skip that on the semis.

Backing up is still kind of a crap show, however…

I just know if we lose it will be directly because the announcers will talk up Flores on the first Chargers possession, and then Herbert will proceed to throw for his personal record in yardage and TDs.

It is inevitable.

If we win it will be because Herbert throws multiple INTs.

I will do an over/under for a season if I happen to be at a casino and the bets looks good.
But the last time I did that it had been a couple of years and the ‘ticket’ was expired. Eventually a supervisor approved my $30 payout. I just don’t go to a casino often enough. I do enjoy hanging out in the Sports Book while The Teacher plays with the slots.

This is one of the reasons the NFL continues to be less appealing to me each year. Just seems too fishy watching games.

I feel like NFL games are more consistently close at the end of the game than they used to be, and I don’t find it a coincidence that it started getting that way as sports betting became more popular and refs seemed to be getting worse.

I mean, this surely won’t happen again because we are a much more evolved society now.

Per Google:

During the early 1900s, sports gambling was a widespread and often unchecked practice in the United States, despite being largely illegal. While it fueled the growing popularity of professional sports, it also led to pervasive corruption and game-fixing scandals.
An underground industry

  • A “gray area”: Despite being outlawed in most of the country by 1910, gambling existed in a legal “gray area” where enforcement was lax. The practice continued to flourish, with bookmakers and betting pools operating out of the public eye.
  • Organized crime: The illegality of sports betting made it an attractive revenue source for organized crime syndicates. These groups ran illegal bookmaking operations and were responsible for a significant amount of the gambling and corruption during this era.
  • Class divide: The gambling scene was split along class lines. Wealthy elites wagered discreetly in exclusive private clubs, while the working class participated in illegal betting pools and relied on bookmakers.

Corruption in baseball

  • Integral to the game: During baseball’s “Deadball Era” (roughly 1900–1919), gambling was intimately connected with the sport. Betting on games, game-fixing, and bribery were common, sometimes openly discussed in the stands.
  • Officials looked the other way: Major League Baseball executives often ignored the corruption as long as attendance was booming. Players involved in fixing games were rarely, if ever, punished.
  • The Black Sox Scandal: The deep-seated culture of gambling and corruption exploded into public view with the 1919 Black Sox Scandal. Eight players from the Chicago White Sox were accused of taking bribes from gamblers to intentionally lose the World Series. The end of an era: The Black Sox Scandal led to the appointment of Kenesaw Mountain Landis as the first Commissioner of Baseball in 1920. Landis permanently banned the eight players involved and launched a concerted effort to eradicate gambling from the sport.

Gone fishin'

I'm a dad, husband, Army vet, believer, and a die-hard, life-long Vikings fan from the great state of North Dakota. I've been a Viking fan dating back to 1980, I've been covering the Vikings for nearly a decade, and I founded Skoloholics in 2022. I work in real estate and property management, I love spending time with family, working in the yard, doing anything in the outdoors, and as you can tell from my username, I love fishing.
