Vikings News & Random Thoughts

Still plenty of hate for Fragile McPonder. I have to admit, the results have been less than stellar, but I have not given up on JJ. His stats are not good, but neither were Sam Darnolds prior to a decent 2022 outing and then 1 solid season here before winning it all with Seattle(Thanks to a great running game and the best defense around). I expect the team to remain patient as he learns how to play QB as a grown up. He has played in 10 games. I really would hate for this team to give up on him and then watch him win 3 Super Bowls with the Chargers.

This season should still be fun. Murray will obviously be the starter, and his contract for the Vikings is the ANTI-KIRKO contract where the team gets a huge discount thanks to AZ paying the QB to leave. The QB room is much stronger than last season, and a healthy Wentz is going to help. JJ could be QB #3 this season.

With the history of QBs around here, I expect to see all three QBs play this season. At the very least, we will at least be treated to more JJ in the preseason, since Murry will be the one they want starting in September and they will protect him to the detriment of the new guy learning the offense. I would prefer all three QBs play in all three preseason games to get some needed experience and maybe have a fast start in September. Good thing I am not the coach.

Starting O Line looks to be set, so the question is how many games will they actually play as a unit before they start dropping like flies again? The team has plenty of roster needs, and I have no idea what the draft will bring. I am just very grateful that Kwesi is no longer here to ruin things.

You may now enjoy throwing shade at each other.

I honestly think Rory could pull off a repeat performance this year at the Masters. He’s my pick. I think Matt Fitzpatrick, Collin Morikawa, Si Woo Kim, and Tommy Fleetwood will likely contend too.

So, here is my question for the Group and NLNV…
Friday afternoon NLNV says we had rescued the weapons officer.
He assured us this info came from high up in CENTCOM.
Late Saturday night the weapons officer was actually rescued.
Sunday morning we find out that the CIA had been engaged in a disinformation campaign of trying to spread rumors that we had already rescued the officer so Iran wouldn’t keep searching so hard.

Was NLNV in on the disinformation or was he duped by the disinformation?? It really is hard to say.

Laughing… no, I received a text that said “missing crewmember located, acquired, and successfully evac’d”. I understood that to mean the second crewmember because I knew that the first crewmember (pilot) had been recovered already. Unfortunately the person advising me was actually referring to the pilot, not the whizzo. Fog of war moment for me.

His text was an exclamation of joy, that I took as an update to the ongoing mission.

I’ll say this… from the time we learned of the WSO’s position and confirmed (authenticated) it, a little over 12 hours passed between the time Hegseth received the information, and the operation was executed. He got the Presidents authorization to go get the crewmember, and somehow created an amazingly complex plan including incorporating the CIA to create a ruse, scheduled bombers to blow up a command center in Tehran, and bring in all sorts of aircraft buzzing in and out of the area without crashing into each other, and destroy enemy forces on the ground constantly to protect the WSO. This operation wasn’t planed and practiced for weeks. It was put together and executed flawlessly in hours. Unbelievable.

Great job by the military. and great probably isn’t adequate.
But you make a point i hadn’t thought about. Does the SECDEF, or for that matter any military commander, have to get the President’s approval to rescue a downed airman?

An operation of this level of danger and complexity definitely requires POTUS in the mix. If it goes sideways, it’s a huge political disaster. Epic Fury itself is a huge political catastrophe waiting to happen. The CINC is calling the shots here, for sure.

We’ve had these kinds of Operations go South in the past. Remember the Desert One disaster (Operation Eagle Claw) in 1980? Maybe the singular reason Presidents since then have decided not to take any such action “on their watch”. Only Trump.

They have 5 ‘ranking options’ for players. ProFootballNetwork, PFF, ESPN, Athletic and Consensus. I believe the draft score is how well the draft picks stack up vs the ranking option selected.

Of course, like anyone who plays golf, smoking a drive or hitting an iron pure is a great feeling, and very satisfying. I strike the ball decently enough, often enough though that the game is fun. I don’t gank a lot of shots so I keep it in play, and enjoy the day.

So one “trait” a great GM has is a that “horse trading” sense. The ability to get something for nothing… that ability to get the better of a trading partner. The Eagles Howie Roseman leaps to mind. I would also say, a GM who “depends” on others to choose talent is a bad plan poorly executed. No, the GM must know football. This is a multi billion dollar professional football team, that wants to vie for Championships. The lead dog better know pro football, and football players. He better have a football background, knowledge, and instincts. He better be immersed in the talent search completely. He better have a plan, and objectives every year to build a better team.

There was that famous story that came out where a mandatory film study clause was actually included in his second contract. IF he doesn’t invest in film study, and I mean immerse himself in breaking down film on defenses, he won’t take the offense to that next level.

I heard it postulated that no one we draft this year would be a ‘day one starter’.

You could argue the Vikings are in a rare position where their most significant needs are either for rotational depth or future-proofing, rather than filling a literal empty spot on the depth chart’

Speculation was maybe a WR3, if that is considered a starter, or a stud LB or possibly a Safety, if the Hitman doesn’t come back, could crack the starting lineup.

So BPA might be the way to go, some depth is thinner than others but we need some athletic youth across the board.

First Good Draft I have ever managed using ESPNs draft rankings on https://www.profootballnetwork.com/mockdraft.

18 Dillon Thieneman, S Oregon
49 Lee Hunter, DT Texas Tech
82 Mike Washington Jr., RB Arkansas
97 Bryce Lance, WR North Dakota State
163 Sam Roush, TE Stanford
196 Jack Kelly, LB BYU
234 Andre Fuller, CB Toledo
235 Mason Reiger, EDGE Wisconsin
244 Travis Burke, OT Memphis

All athletic and highly ranked vis a vis where they were drafted.

Well ‘All athletic’ but Lee Hunter, his RAS is only 3.72. But he was ranked #30 and I got him at #49. I know Flo prefers disruptors who can attack over run stuffers. Hunter is a known run stuffer but he also has 6.5 sacks and 29.5 tackles for loss in the last three years, so he can also disrupt.
Gracen Halton, DT, Oklahoma, who has met with the Vikings and is more of a ‘disruptor’ was drafted at #70 so I would have had to reach for him or hope he lasted until #82, I think Hunter was the better/safer option here.

I also put a full day in at my Dad’s place, prepping his garden.

F*****g wind blew all day but I managed to get his raised beds out to the garden plot – he’ll be 71 in May and is 6’6” with flat feet from years wearing Tony Llamas and bad knees, getting down in the dirt is hard on him.

A few years ago I built these raised beds using railroad ties and 2×6’s. I hinged the legs so they can be folded up for winter storage but the mf’ers are HEAVY – gotta haul them out with the Deere and LoadHog trailer. Got them moved into place next to the garden – I’ll go back in a few weeks to re-till and put the beds up.

Between hauling all that around and swapping out the ballast box and tillers on the Deere I am feeling it today.

Good kind of ache though – feeling of accomplishment and helped out the old man a bit.

Completely agree. Aching from accomplishing something or a good workout is not nearly as painful.

I keep seeing pundits saying that Murray is not automatically QB1 and he will compete with McCarthy for the job in training camp. I think KOC would be wise to sort of play his hand that way, regardless of the fact that McCarthy is nowhere near the NFL QB Murray is. For that matter McCarthy is nowhere near the NFL QB that Wentz is either.

I am not a huge Murray fan BTW, I still think he’s more a scrambling runner than a great QB. That said, he can make throws pretty consistently and get the job done.

Pretty much how I see it. I sincerely doubt McCarthy will ever be a great NFL QB. Last year I was surprised how amateurish he looked. I also think Wentz would have started all the games left in the season, if he hadn’t gotten injured.

I guess it depends on your definition of ‘compete’.
I would call Murray the ‘Leader in the Clubhouse’ with a large lead. Who knows what might happen to change that, injury??

Just some random thoughts.
Murray has a lot of unpolished talent – can make lots of highlight type plays. He is a superior athlete.
Wentz had other backup job offers. Don’t believe he came here to be third string.
JJ may or may not make it, but he is in a far, far worse position than he was last year at this time.

This is how our Government should approach immigration.

“The privileges of American citizenship are so great and its duties so grave that we may well insist upon a good knowledge of every person applying for citizenship and a good knowledge by him of our institutions. We should not cease to be hospitable to immigration, but we should cease to be careless as to the character of it. There are men of all races, even the best, whose coming is necessarily a burden upon our public revenues or a threat to social order. These should be identified and excluded.”

No longer New Vikings Fan
4 April 2026 3:18 pm

Played 9 holes this morning to start the day. There were no tee times available at the course, but the starter let me and another guy go off the back, alone. I’d played a round with him a while back, and enjoyed it. Retired Marine Master Gunney. No nonsense golfer… grip it and rip it kind of a guy. He hit three straight balls into the lake on the first hole, trying to drive the green. It’s a tricky hole, where as the crow flies, it’s about 220 yards to the green, or you can follow the fairway around the lake and it plays around 285 yards. Bunkers and trees, and more water down the left side with the green surrounded by water. Going at it is stupid. The Air Force guy hit his seven wood down the fairway, hit a nice 3/4 nine iron onto the green, and two putted for par. The Marine had a “bogey” grin. I actually parred the first 5 holes, and was cruising pretty good, but pulled my drive a shade on the 6th hole and it bounced into the water. Hit my third shot over the green into trouble, took a drop, pitched my 5th shot onto the green, and made a nice little 7. Bother. Made two bogey’s and a par coming in to finish with a 41. The Gunney wanted breakfast, so we had some eggs and pancakes at the clubhouse. He told me his wife of 44 years had recently passed. He said he’s been through all sorts of pain in his life, but at 75 years old, this has hurt him the most. His dog is 15 years old, and he’s not long for this world either. His son lives in Texas, and wants him to come there, but he doesn’t want to do that. I told him to let it all percolate a little and put it in God’s hands. He said that was the plan. Then he looked at me and said “I really hope we can play a round together again”. I gave him my phone number and said “call me any time Gunney, I’m around”.

Life gets hard sometimes.

Regarding the QB comments, I think the Murray signing was rather bad for JJ’s tenure as a Viking QB. More than likely, and barring major injury, Murray will shine, get resigned and JJ will be traded.

I while I agree that the Vikings need more help in the defensive backfield I don’t think a small-ish CB (5′ 11″-190 lbs) who missed all of 2025 due to and ACL tear is the answer.
Plus CB is so deep this draft that we don’t need to get one in the 1st round especially after just adding depth with Pierre.

A couple of my great nieces were telling me that they went to their first NHL game. They saw MN beat Vancouver. They were way up in the nose bleed seats but they had a great time. They were also very happy that when they went to the bathroom, the line for the men was way out of the door and there was only a couple of ladies ahead of them for the line to the women’s bathroom. I guess it is the little things in life that can be such bright spots.

In 2021, Cousins played in 16 games for the Vikings. He threw for 4,221 yards (263.8 yards per game) with 33 TD’s and only 7 interceptions for a 103.1 passer rating. That level of QB play over one game is considered exceptional. Over a season? Yeah, pretty damn incredible.

The Vikings went 8-8 in those games, and 8-9 for the season.

Great QB play can only do so much.
