VIKINGS NEWS –

Team looked pretty awful on the Offense so far this preseason. Curious to see if things improve at all this Friday. I may watch, I may do something else. Bad football is hard to watch. Last practice game before the team takes on FTP to start the season. I hope the defense can carry the day, as I still have zero confidence in this offense with any of the 4 QBs on the roster.

I put a TV on my back deck (half of which is a 3-season room) for football viewing when the weather is nice, and tonight is the maiden voyage.

Climbing around on my roof to monkey with my antenna is still relatively easy at 45. I think I may need to add a signal booster up there, and a new splitter for the extra screen (I stole the connection for the basement TV for now because no one ever watches broadcast down there unless there’s company over).

I’ll get some snacks and some beer and swear at Sean Payton while my wife rolls her eyes.

You’re not the one that decides when to get a prostate exam. It would definitely be odd to say to the nurse taking down your history that you want a prostate exam. If that’s what you think needs to be done, then by all means do it, but unless you have some specific problem (that I don’t want to hear about thank you very much) just know the nurse will quietly say something to the doctor who will roll their eyes. Odd requests keep the day fresh.

I started having annual exams when I was an intern, age 35, after encountering so many patients that didn’t have a primary care physician during my intern year. Have not missed one since. Makes it easy to call the nurse and say can you ask the doc to prescribe me a couple of ambien for my upcoming transatlantic flight?

MT Viking
Reply to  KFEY93
27 August 2026 3:02 pm

I’m still saying it would be an odd request, do you have a problem with my stating it that way? When you have seen a physician in the past, do you tell them your history and then specifically ask them to listen to your lungs?

Here’s my *shrugs* question to you, “can you make my computer run faster, but without changing anything, restarting it, installing anything, closing my 47 Chrome tabs, or inconveniencing me in any way?”

KFEY93
Reply to  MT Viking
27 August 2026 3:35 pm

A little bit, there’s a bit of an attitude layered in on top of your response that confuses me. I dont know much about these things, all I know is I was “informed” in my younger life that I should get a prostate exam to check for cancer around the age of 40 so it can be caught early if at all. Thats it. I haven’t seen a physician since my last physical when I was in high school because im still healthy and in good shape and have not had any major medical issues that would require me to see one. And if I did have some issue with my breathing, yes, I would bring that up in a physical, because, it seems logical to.

Im not going to equate getting checked for cancer to “my PC is being slow”. Thats a poor analogy. Not changing anything will not make it run faster. BUT. I could look at browser extensions you may have installed and or unwanted bloatware and determine if those exist and ask if you want them removed in about 90 seconds. Is that enough time to not be inconvenient to you? Shitty day at work? Don’t take it out on me man.

MT Viking
Reply to  KFEY93
27 August 2026 3:44 pm

We’re not seeing eye to eye on this topic. To be clear, I think you are fast approaching the age you should have an annual exam. Plenty of 40 year old men die of heart attacks. The specific question of the prostate exam stood out because it would not be a topic of a typical annual exam at 35. Having had plenty of annual exams, I would expect the doc to listen to my lungs through a stethoscope but I wouldn’t say something like, “make sure to check my lungs”.

Here are the current recommendations for prostate screening. DRE (rectal exam) is no longer a routine recommendation.

Age 40–45: Consider starting PSA screening in men at increased risk, including Black men, those with a strong family history, or certain germline mutations.
Age 45–50: A baseline PSA can be offered after shared decision-making.
Age 50–69: This is the group most likely to benefit from regular PSA screening.
Screening interval: Typically every 2–4 years, individualized according to PSA, age, risk factors, health, and patient preference.
Age ≥70: Routine screening is generally not recommended, particularly when life expectancy is <10 years. Exceptionally healthy older men with >10-year life expectancy may reasonably continue after discussion.

KFEY93
Reply to  MT Viking

Lovely! That makes sense to me. I was unware that it was not longer a routine recommendation honestly. That’s good to know. My rectum and myself thank you.

MT Viking
Reply to  KFEY93
27 August 2026 3:52 pm

It still feels great when they do it, though. I actually had one when I turned 50 (before my colonoscopy and before the prostate recs changed, so it served the purpose of also proving the scope wouldn’t hit some giant rectal polyp), and again right before I got my prostate biopsy. Let me tell you the second, done by the petite urologist with dainty lady hands, was much easier than the first.

You are getting moderate sedation, not general anesthesia (ie immobility, hypnosis and analgesia). So you are basically just getting the hypnotic…trust me you are a little awake during the exam but just don’t remember it.

Awake. That’s how I did it at age 50. IYKYK. It really was no worse (for me) than having a big bowel movement. The worst part was when he snipped a polyp, not because you can feel it but because sliding the snare into the scope stiffens the scope and you DO feel that.

Ben’s gonna love stiffening the scope.

It’s easy, you call the guy or gal and say hey Jim/Jan I need to get a screening colonoscopy and I hate the notion of getting propofol or versed and telling you all about my butt fantasies during the exam so I think I would do okay without sedation are you willing to do it? If not, the next time you ask me to squeeze in a wet read on a sick patient I’ll tell you to shove it, which you are good at as a gastroenterologist narf narf.

Say it just like that.

Get it done on a regular schedule. I waited too long between events and ended up with a large cancerous tumor in my colon. Multiple surgeries, a colostomy bag (for 9 months) and chemotherapy. That all sucked! I still need at least one more surgery to repair a very large hernia that has developed from the previous surgeries. This all happened because I waited about 2 years too long for a regular colonoscopy, which, if done on time, would have been a simple polyp removal.

I am the classic example of an idiot who was “too busy” to get a regular colonoscopy. That stupid decision has cost me a ton of pain…

Don’t be like me…

Since I was on the road for work yesterday and missed out on the fun Sam Darnold discussion. Here’s my 2cents.

Sam put up 4200 yards and 25 TDs 67% comp. last year. In todays high passing NFL, thats very efficient and would put him firmly in the Good, not amazing category. He also lead the league in turn overs, but no one wants to bring that up.

Did they get to and win a SB with him? Yes. Was it because of him? I would argue not really, not once the play offs started. Go look at his stats in the play off games. They are meh at best. That top run game and top young defense pulled them through the play offs to a sub optimal opponent in the lucky ass Patriots in a soft AFC. A wins a win, but context is key.

All of that is true.

It is also true that Darnold played like ass the last two games for us. Regardless of scheme, O line, coaching, whatever. He missed wide open WRs that he wasn’t doing earlier in the year, the scheme worked, the O line did its job 90% of the time. Go back and watch the Detroit and Rams game, he looked awful and flustered, and there’s open WRs to be thrown to. That is a fact.

Would I take him on this team now? Yes, would this roster and defense be the same that it is now with him here? Probably not and Im not sure if thats good or bad. All I know is crying about ex girl friends is loser ass behavior and there’s a lot of it going on in here lately.

Nice thing about football guess people watch the same game and see things differently. Would agree the SB was meh, but those defenses were fierce and would be a tough day for any QB.
Now, the NFC Championship Game I felt was a little more that meh. Sam went toe to toe with Stafford and went 25 of 36 for 346 yards and three TD’s, no interceptions. Me, I’m an easy grader, but I’ll take that all day from a QB in a Championship Game.

Well I for one am definitely crying over an ex girlfriend here.

Going by the same logic that Darnold shit the bed his last two games after putting up a very impressive season the 16 games previously, there are many players on the 53 that should have been flushed at the end of the year. I know Freezy likes to poke the bear but the fact that KOC (who has a heckuva lot better look at QB performance than we do) stood with McFragile™ while letting my goddamn ex-girlfriend go means he should be gone. Didn’t play him in preseason – gone. Played three shit quarters against Chicago game 1 -gone. It’s a farking travesty what the team fielded at QB last year.

Seattle managed to rebuild a championship caliber defense from the ashes of the Legion of Boom while we monkey around with exotic blitz packages and give up A gap runs and 3rd and 15’s like a prevent defense – preventing the punt. GM scouts coach – gone. Hence why I advocate we should be building and coaching up defense (as you pointed out defense wins championships) before…

…trumpeting the classic Minnesota Vikings fans line of clutching pearls of Justin Jefferson, whose cost vs benefit is so skewed it is not even funny…but, but he is so awesome doing the griddy.

I’ll take the shot, deservedly so, but I’ve been a fan since before you were born, not born into it by my family living in that god-forsaken state, not a team that my dad or uncle cheered for but one I picked all on my own, and I’ll continue to be a fan. However, I shan’t cast pearls before swine…if you want to toss out Darnold with the bathwater then you better have a player of better value lined up to take over or you are – gone.

Fuck KOC and Kwesi.

Oh, and there will continue to be “a lot of it going on in here”. You’re welcome.

Welp, you might just get your wish if they dont make it to the play offs and win a game this year. He deserves to be hot the hot seat at this point and I think behind the scenes KOC is. At the end of the day it was his and Kwesi’s call. I’ll prepare myself for more moping from the masses for ex’s of yesterday but if you think your fandom holds more weight then anyone else’s because of your arbitrary reason > mine. Which, btw I didnt pick it because of my Dad or because I was forced to watch them, I picked them from watching AP play and watching and learning the game with my friends. Then I got some bad news for you, but it doesn’t. Also I dont live in MN, I live in ND, and don’t pretend to preach that MT is SO much better to live. And I didn’t take a shot at you in particular. It was a shot at multiple posters over the past 2+ weeks crying about wanting Kirk and Sam back. Its eye rolling, it ain’t happening so quit bitching. But if you want to get salty about it fine. Let it out.

Now that’s good discourse.

I have a pretty good idea where you live, not I smelt your aftershave this morning but the general area. I’m also not saying my years of fandom trumps anyone else, but just pointing out I’m no fair weather fan. As far as ND, since I went to MS there and actually signed a contract to return to GF, it is safe to say I like it. Bismarck is a much nicer city to visit than Billings, where the traffic and homelessness is ten times worse. Unfortunately Target can’t seem to figure out how to handle tax exempt sales, and since Target is a major stop for us, it makes coming that way less desirable than it used to be.

I think we can both agree MN sucks and I personally am glad there is a buffer state between us.

And Bismarck is aesthetically the most pleasing “larger” city in NoDak imo. I do miss going to MT semi yearly. We will be taking a ski trip there this winter for sure, depending on if the kiddo is going to be with us or not, probably Red Lodge again, haven’t been there in almost a decade, that or White Fish.

And yes the Minni Metro in MN is pretty shitty, its fine for a weekend visit for sports but then you want out ASAP. Would never live there. But the country side of MN actually has some very beautiful land, and its a shame many dont appreciate that there. Large cities were a mistake imo.

J.J. McCarthy is expected to start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in Friday’s preseason finale against the Denver Broncos, as head coach Kevin O’Connell plans to rest top-line starters like Kyler Murray and Justin Jefferson.

Because this is the final preseason game ahead of the NFL roster cutdown deadline, the lineup will heavily feature backup players and roster-bubble candidates rather than regular-season starters.

J.J. McCarthy handles the starting quarterback duties, continuing to get valuable reps while working through recent ankle trouble.

Jordan Mason / Demond Claiborne see extended action in the offensive backfield behind regular starter Aaron Jones Sr., who will be resting or limited.

Jakobe Thomas gets significant playing time at safety as he returns to the field and competes for a rotational role.

Johnny Hekker / Brett Thorson share punting duties as the team’s final specialist battle is decided.

Yeah, it’s kind of mind blowing. Like, you’re an NFL quarterback? Really? Sad to see but at this point it’s clear he doesn’t have the skills and even if he does he’s probably going to be an inconsistent headcase moving forward.

Fair enough – to this point, 95+% chance he is a bust. I hope I’m surprised by his play if and when he has to play (like you said, likely at some point if he stays on the team), but most people were saying we’d be in our Super Bowl window at this point with him at the helm. Maybe not you, but very much not the case.

You are right on the Subaru, although it was an awesome car! But I am not the chronic down voter…..

I bought a Hyundai Tucson to replace the Subaru. I can say the Subaru had more “juice” and was more fun to drive. I have to adjust my passing distances now….The Tucson just doesn’t have the rapid acceleration.

Based on the numbers, this is no surprise. I am pretty disappointed, I had high hopes. My streak of 58 years of disapointment looks to get extended. But drafting a QB in round 1 is a crap shoot. What frustrates me is it appears KOC and Kweisi were not aligned on that draft decision. Just like Rick and Zim. that situation falls on the owners

I know with all this talk about cars and insurance everyone here is thinking

“I wonder if Nodak still has that old 2011 Subaru that gave him so much trouble and sat for 6 months in the shop?”

I sold it to a friend of mine at the end of July for 800 dollars. He has a kid turning 16 so needed a car that can get banged up. He got a bargain, basically a brand new transmission, new converter thingy, 4 new tires, and it is running really well with 150,000 miles on it…BUT the AC needs work and I was done messing with it.
