Minnesota Vikings Discussion: Skoloholics 10/27/2026 – Daily Thread Wednesday Edition

Vikings Humpday

Happy Humpday, and welcome to Skoloholics. The Vikings return to work today, The injury report will be out later today. I expect to see Aaron Jones on it along with Brian O’neal, both of which have been nursing a bad knee.

There has been some activity leading up to the trade deadline, but I have not heard anything on the Vikings. It looks like the Colts are having a Twins style fire sale, maybe they are just working out the details for Johnathon Taylor, a guy can dream can’t he?

The Vikings may be the worst undefeated team, but they are also the best undefeated team this year.

QOTD:
Will Kyler Murray ever figure out the Vikings offense, or will KOC finally simplify it for him?

Let us know in the comments.

Just wanted to share a MT style anecdote with y’all.

Last week I traveled to Rochester to visit the WFMC. Just to recap the urologist at my shop basically wished me best of luck, just have your internist follow up with PSA from time to time, after a low grade (Gleason 3+3) prostate adenocarcinoma picked up by TR US biopsy after I had an elevated PSA.

MCR pigeon holes docs, so the urologist I saw (previously met at a conference) does robotic prostatectomies for prostate Ca, and nothing else. You got kidney stones? You’re not seeing him. TL;DR version repeat bx same same f/u PSA in 12 months, PSA/MR in 24, PSA/TP fusion bx in 36.

Get my blood drawn first thing Monday morning at the big bowl Subway level Hilton building. Walk over to Gonda 3 and get my prostate MR. Tuesday morning I head to Gonda 7 for my transperineal ultrasound guided fusion biopsy. In layman’s terms they put a probe in your bottom, anesthetize your taint and the nerve bundles around the prostate with 30 mL of lidocaine, and then jab six inch needles into all the areas of your prostate for a total of 14 biopsies.

Obviously a well orchestrated process, the exact opposite of KOC’s playcalling.

Assistant I’ll call him guy brings me back starts outlining process, nurse I’ll call her gal takes my BP, says the PA I’ll call him pal will come consent you in a minute. pal says your pain should be no more than a 2 or 3 we’re gonna take 14 biopsies any questions “yeah do you think I could be trained to do them, I’m kinda dopey” heck yeah come visit for a week we do about 30 a day you’ll be fully trained to be the taint poker of MT. I’m wearing a gown opening in the front and socks, nothing else. Put me in a chair with stirrups which if you’ve ever seen a woman give birth you know what that looks like. What followed was an amazing orchestration with no wasted movements that took about ten minutes but seemed like sixty seconds. While guy has me scooching forward and puts a drape over my junk gal is positioning me in stirrups guy says a little buzz cut here with shaver gal asks when I trained there pal says oh my sister is a neurorad as well guy says gonna tape up your stuff gal says how do you like MT guy says some cold soap pal says we’re gonna start now lubricated finger in your bottom now lubricated probe in bottom guy starts patting my shoulder not hard but firm like burping a baby gal says squeeze my hand if you need I’m like “I’m okay” thinking why is guy patting my shoulder pal says 10 cc lidocaine under the skin on your right sting -now- okay 10 cc lidocaine under the skin on your left sting -now- gal says you’re doing great and now my lizard brain is starting to get warm and fuzzy like I’m being patted on the shoulder like a baby and I feel like everything will be ok pal says now I’m numbing the area between the bladder prostate and levator ani over here and now over here and I say I feel NOTHING oh good pat pat pat all right I’m starting on the right apex you’ll here a loud click -click- I feel NOTHING keep patting me guy and so on and so on -click-click-click. Get done I’m almost crying cuz of the shoulder patting guy wipes blood off and puts on a big bandage gal says we’ll just sit you up for a bit before you get up I’d advise no sex for a week, no heavy lifting for a couple of days take it easy today drink a bunch of water and don’t leave the clinic area until you pee just in case you can’t in which case you come back here.

Got results next morning, doc gave me the plan. Said JFC your prostate is huge (MRI) do you have any problems with weak stream retention getting up at night urgency my helpful wife says yeah to the latter two. He said let me know I can refer you to the BPH clinic.

Oh boy did my taint get black and blue (wife took pics since deleted). Everything (blood in urine, blood in semen) is resolving nicely.

Wife and I chatted at length on way home. My big prostate means that when I have to go I have to go soon, especially if I just drank coffee and a big glass of water. Guess how I feel when a case takes longer than I want first thing in the morning, that ‘s right I feel like I’m going to piss my pants and I bet it’s only a matter of time until it does happen. Since I got a lot of years ahead of me may as well get something done. Asked doc to refer me over to BPH guy. Planning on getting a HoLEP some time in new year, maybe February, over there.

I’m assuming prostate stuff has improved since the stone ages. My doctor told me that back in the day he recommended taking the prostate out of a few people. Of course then they had to wear a diaper the rest of their lives and use a pump for sex. I’m assuming in all of your medical jargon up above, it means you are going to have something else done, not removal.

Way back in the day I was told mine was enlarged, but my latest doctor says not so. But being old, I’m up at least once, usually twice, sometimes thrice in a night to pee.

Thing that pisses me off is that the incidence of prostate cancer (how many new cases in a year) in the US is the same (actually slightly higher) than breast cancer. The mortality rate (how many will die OF the disease) is the same (actually slightly lower) than breast cancer.

Yet the NFL, in their wisdom, has breast cancer awareness slogans and wearing pink the whole month of October (breast cancer awareness month). There is no NFL slogan for prostate cancer. There is no prostate cancer awareness month.

Please note I am not saying that we shouldn’t be very aware of breast cancer risks and diagnosis. However, last I checked, the majority of NFL fans are of the male variety.

Listening to O’Connell’s press conferences, it really seems like they’re focused on not turning the ball over.

I’ve been bitching about Murray holding the ball too long and taking sacks, but it seems like they’re telling him not to throw interceptions, and also not to run because they don’t want him to get hurt. That’s a dangerous predicament, in my opinion.

A lot of of them past play, even on third and short, seem to be full of Long developing routes. I don’t see any underneath routes most of the time.

We have yet to establish a running game. Out of the shotgun on fourth and one? He does it every time, and it rarely works. Yet, he keeps doing it.

O’Connell‘s clock management hasn’t been exactly an A, not even sure if he would get a C.

I think O’Connell should give up playcalling, give it to Phillips, so O’Connell can focus on head coaching.

In his last one, he almost alluded to the fact that they intentionally played down to their opponents. That’s not exactly what he said, but you could interpret that. I don’t think that’s what he meant, but it seems that’s the way it is.

Not turning the ball over and maximizing the time of possession plays to the teams strength by supporting the defense. Don’t want the defense to spend too much time on the field and wearing down in the 4th qtr like in previous years.
And since the defense has allowed only 3 4th qtr points this year it seems to be working.

I was at the colts game. When you are at the game you see some stuff you wouldn’t see but you miss some other stuff. My initial reaction was Kyler did not have a good game, missed too many throws.

I just finished watching the broadcast version. Out Murrays 24 throws, 5 or 6 were off-target incompletions that were on him (I debated on the corner route to the endzone for Jennings, tough throw to make, better throw is a TD).. To be fair the long out to JJ on the sideline while he was getting hit was sick. But still, 6 miss-fires out of 24 is way too many. If he completes 3 or 4 of those it is a whole different game. No QB is going to be perfect, but he needs to be way better.

Here’s a simple message for KOC and it goes back to something he said when he first got here.
At I believe his first presser after getting the job here he had just come from being the OC for the Rams after they won the SB. And Kupp’s play was big for all the ways and schemes the Rams used to get him the ball. And he explained he fully understood a big part of the job here was to get the ball to Jefferson.
Recently read Jefferson is 44th in the league for yards. Think about that, the premier WR in the league is 44th!
Message – get the damn ball to JJ. What a gross misuse of talent.

I still contend signing Jefferson to a big contract was ill-advised.

Currently, he ranks tied for 70th in receptions (23), 44th in receiving yards (302), and tied for 17th in receiving touchdowns (3). He is tied for fourth in salary…

I am fine saying it is not Jefferson’s fault. It is the fault of the Vikings for thinking they needed a $35 million receiver when they are perpetually befuddled by the QB position.

We are winning despite KOC, not because of KOC. The offense has performed poorly for two seasons now, and running his complex schemes is just not translating to results on the field. I refuse to believe we can’t bring in an OC with a simpler playcalling system and have superior results to this crap. We’re about to be fed a diet of what great offenses can do to maximize results on the field despite our max pressure defense.

I’m a simpleton when it comes to cap hits but still contend they need to trade JJ to the highest bidder as soon as it is financially possible. It’s like having the greatest player on your hockey team but the goalie can’t stop a wrist shot from the blue line.

I am a simpleton too. But do note when Cousins, Darnold, even Nick Mullins, ran this system, complex or not, JJ seemed to thrive and we could score polnts – the objective of an offense.
Would bet even money if we were playing Wentz, JJ’s numbers would be considerable better.

i guess i have a hard time thinking Murray “can’t see receivers because he is so short”, why are we acting like he doesn’t have multiple seasons of over 3500 passing yards and 20+ touchdowns etc….

the issue, i believe, is that KOC runs a very complex system, and has murray wound up so stinking tight that he doesn’t quite know what to do and panics a bit. As seen in a few instances of trying to not scramble, but staying in the pocket or even scrambling out of then back into pressure, rather than running forward for positive yards.

i’d REALLLLLYYYY like to see 15 targets a game to JJ. even if half of them are little screens or quick slants. i understand thats not quite the sophisticated play calling of offensive genius KOC but let’s try something new…..get the ball to the best players on the field ALOT

1. Poor decisions (JJM)
2. A lot of sacks (Kirk)
3. Panic (KM)

He did have some pretty big years early in his career. But it seemed things got tougher later. He played in the same division as the Rams, Niners and Seahawks and they started to defense him differently. Basically, rush their DE’s wide, keep him in the pocket and make him beat them from the pocket. Then things got difficult for him.
Is it size, maybe, maybe not. But this offense requires a QB to “win” from the pocket.

KOC (or someone regurgitating what KOC said) explained the decision to take the ball if they win the toss lets them dictate the game.

If they take it and score, they’re already playing with a lead, which puts the defense into attack mode.

If they don’t score, their amazing defense usually gets the ball back for them.

The vikes have played 2 of the worst defenses by dvoa (miami and new orleans) and the offense struggled for the better part of those 2 games.

Is it Kyler not seeing open receivers, or the offensive scheme being too complex as to why the offense is failing? Could it be both? Wentz, although not great, kept this offense ahead of the sticks on most downs. He also can see over linemen which is a huge plus.

Whatever KOC does he simply does not have the power to make Kyler 6 inches taller. Even if he dumbs the offense down, the “heart” of this offense requires the QB to be able to throw well from the pocket.

I have always felt like Sept. And October are “warm up” games for NFL. Playing like a winner in Nov. and December gives insights as to who will do well in the post season. I am a bit cautious we went 6-0 in those “warm up” games. Now is the time to play well. Finishing 11-6 or better is imperative for me to consider us as a contender. If we go 13-4, it will show me this team is a serious Super Bowl contender.

‘KOC will start to “dumb it down”’

I suspect that the offense has already been ‘dumbed down’ for Murray just like it was for JJ (QB). How much more can/will he be able to do that??
Seems like just changing things up a bit will help. Maybe some RPO or quick slants or designed roll outs to take advantage of the midgets legs, something.
