Minnesota Vikings News & Discussion: 7 Jun 2022

Merry Tuesday, everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying their work week. We attended the Bismarck Larks game last night, and I KNOW you’re all on the edge of your seat awaiting a report. The Larks fell behind early, clawed back late, but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell to Duluth 10-6. At the game, they asked me to take part in some between innings tomfoolery, which I obviously accepted. Then they told me I had to tell a dad joke, which was perfect. Now, they took a BIG chance handing me a live mic in a public place, I’m not sure they were aware of the dangers, but I behaved. My joke was: “Today, my son asked “Can I have a book mark”, and I burst into tears. Seven years old and he doesn’t know my name is Brad”.

Get it?

Makes sense given the contract he just got but likely his last contract

I think he wanted to surpass Brady in the record books but Brady is bound and determined to keep playing till Rodgers quits.

Brady had a far better year than Rodgers last year, but the dweebs gave the MVP to Rodgers. Makes no sense. 5316 yards to 4115, 43 TD’s to 37.

Not a chance in Hades that Rodgers will catch most of Brady’s records.

Brady threw the ball over 700 times last year. Don’t tell me he wasn’t trying to prove he was better than Rodgers and piling up stats. Only one other QB has thrown the ball over 700 times in a season in NFL history. Matthew Stafford; and he did it twice,

Thielen’s catch was good, but there are fewer things I hate more than a short out route designed to go 2-4 yards and then out of bounds.

On 3rd and 3 you want that route… especially in the last two minutes of the half or the game.

You want a 5 yard route, minimum, in case you get some good coverage and have to backpedal.

I’ve enjoyed watching Brady throw almost none of those, because he prefers to throw a short fly or crossing, even if it’s only for the 3 yards, so that the receiver at least has a chance to put some fear into the defenders by possibly busting one loose.

In a two minute drill, the CB’s are usually playing off coverage a bit. This is a standard route to get a first down and stop the clock. Yes, the 7 yard out is a standard NFL route and the norm, but this is a situational route.

Well “old” is relative. Thielen will be 32 in August. In the NFL that is definitely past his prime athletically BUT Thielen can catch the damn ball. He has some sticky hands. Also he has the ability to get open because he has quickness. So, he can get open and he can make contested catches. Finally, even though he’s had some injuries, he’s still producing points for the team. Lots of TD’s every year. He has a knack as they say. I think while he’s old by NFL WR standards he still can be highly effective and productive.

Long day… dog tired. Too tired to read the comments today. 96 days till the season starts. Any “reports” on how the team looks are bogus. The practices are just walk-throughs. It will be 8 weeks into the season before we have a decent idea of what the team has.

Indeed. All rainbows and unicorns, and that will be the messaging for the most part for the foreseeable future. The press continue to hound players to say negative things about the previous regime especially from a “how did you feel” perspective. They are dying for players to say Zim mistreated them, was unfair to them, or didn’t listen to them.

Correct. Autosomal dominant compulsive helio-ophthalmic outbursts of sneezing.

Simplified – sneezing when you look up at the sun. I’m 54, have done it all my life – walk out of a building, look up, and sneeze. Just once, then it’s over until I spend time in a darker area again.

Based on my notable bias and observations, I would say the cost of going to the derr has increased significantly less than inflation and might be one of the best deals going. I know that what I get paid per study has not changed one penny since I started in 2010. Now the number of studies may have increased but that’s an entirely different story.

You know, on another tangent (I could cut and paste the article but I’m sure you all could GAF) there was an article in the local paper about a local gal graduating with a DPT. Overall inspiring article, nice story, but the choice of words struck me. Several times referred to her experiences in medical school as a medical student and then said she was waiting to work until she passed her boards as having board certification “set a physician apart from their peers”. I have always used physician as a very certain set of individuals and refer to myself as one, rather than a derr….but I guess the technical definition is much much broader.

Just thought it wasn’t a good choice of words. I would have zero problems going to a DPT for a musculoskeletal issue, addressing them as doctor, letting them prescribe an anti-inflammatory, order x-ray, etc…but wouldn’t think of asking them about their experiences in “medical school” or for advice about postmenopausal bleeding.

If it were me and I expected the boat to last more than a few years, I’d spring for the nicer trailer (assuming it’s in the budget).

That’s a bit of a naive position though. I’ve only owned a boat for a couple of years and the trailer isn’t anything special.

7 June 2022 11:05 am

Oh, sorry, I wasn’t exactly clear on my question. My trailer is fine, but I blew out a bearing this weekend. I’ve got new bearings, and need the bearing protectors to keep the grease inside.

Bearing Buddy is a well-known brand, but they run a bit more $$. There are several knock-offs in the $15-20 range. I’m looking at around $400 for towing the boat/trailer back home, $60 in bearings/grease, so I don’t want to spend much more if I don’t have to.

Adrenaline
Reply to  Northwoods
7 June 2022 11:12 am

I dunno, I’ve never had one lose grease badly, but that’s because I know that heat will cause grease to liquify so I check and usually repack every year, with or without a good keeper cap.

Northwoods

I may have overfilled it with grease and popped the inner seal, and it was all downhill from there.

I can’t believe I made it to the side of the road without the tire falling off. Got it up on the jack and pulled the tire right off without having to undo the castle nut.

Can’t imagine your average Joe would be able to make these. They fit tightly into the outer hub of the wheel. Most models have a tension spring that provides constant pressure to push grease into the bearings (about 3psi).

I will admit they are cute and at this age follow you around like a puppy but I know that baby goats become adult goats and they are a PITA. I guess the plan is when the kids go back to their mother’s for the school year the goats will move to the ranch in Jordan where they can live the life of a goat until they become goat meat.

I’m not comparing any child’s experience with an adult.

I firmly believe an adult should be able to make their own choice in how they want to work and it shouldn’t be up to the company to dictate where they spend their time working, unless there is a specific business need or the persons job performance suffers and/or service level agreements aren’t met.

I’ve experienced too many issues both in and out of the office ever to make blanket statements on what is and isn’t the proper way to work.

I also literally measure time service and process efficiency for my job, so I see down to the employee level of both in person and remote employees for a fortune 500 company so I have a pretty good dataset to compare

benjammin

I tend to agree with you on the employee having influence on worksite, I hate remote, can’t stand not seeing people in person. On the flip side I know people that are the opposite and dread any interaction more intimate than an email. My job doesn’t dictate I work from the office but prefer to do so and as an employer I wouldn’t force someone to work from the office if their job didn’t require it and they preferred remote.

Watching the Williams Wall stop every RB until the Patriots simply used the short passing game as a substitute for a running game was fun. I think that Vikings – Patriots game was a big part of ushering in the current passer-friendly era. Vikings had the #1 run defense, Patriots had the #32 rushing offense, and nearly every analyst still believed a team had to “establish the run” to find success.

It was a Monday night game and the whole country watched the Patriots spank the Vikings.

That must’ve been what, ’06 or so?

17 and 09 were blasts as well.

13 was fun purely due to the “how they gonna eff it up this year” type of fun.

2010 was ridiculous for those of us who love chaos.

19 was fun for me purely bc i watched every game at a Nordic viking bar.

Some of my favorite Vikings memories are from watching them at a bar – especially when out of state.

I watched a MN-NO MNF game at a bar in Colorado Springs in ’08 and was smart enough to bike there. I had a swimmy bike ride home. I didn’t know then that the cops can bust you for biking under the influence.

yeah, I wanted Bradford back in, and when they tried it looked like he was having the drug trip of a lifetime. I wanted Teddy back in too, but at a certain point it got to be too late.

I was worried Keenum was going to get Diggs and/or Thielen hurt (he lead them into dangerous catches and they never shied away from those), but instead he turned into a pumpkin at halftime of the divisional game and that would’ve been that if not for the one miracle play.

one of my favorite memories from that season and shows how absolutely inept my dad was at electronics and such.
the one game we lost, vs the bucs, he didn’t let me watch because it was such a nice day out, he said “We’ll record the game on vhs and watch it later” but he was worried if he recorded but turned the tv off it wouldn’t record (and maybe that was the case back then, i don’t remember” so he covered the tv with a big black plastic bag so i wouldn’t sneak in to watch the game. so we were outside most the afternoon, i went in for a drink and poked a hole in the bag and saw we were losing, ran outside and said WE ARE LOSING and we all ran in and watch the rest of the game, heartbroken hahahahah

LOL, freeze-dad bagging the TV is pretty funny.

You’re supposed to run the antenna into the VCR, then out from there to the TV. Then the VCR is your channel changer. You can record with the TV off that way.

I’m guessing your family didn’t have a newer TV in ’98, so it probably didn’t have any video outputs.

Flat panel TVs are so cheap and ubiquitous these days that we left two 65″ ones at the house we sold and crossed our fingers the new owners wouldn’t ask us to take them cuz the hassle would have been more than they were worth.

If such a thing even existed then a 65″ TV in 1975 would have probably been equivalent in price to a Saturn rocket.

It’s crazy, but very true these days. We bought a 65″ TV for the basement on a whim (well, more whimsical than usual for me) and it’s paid good dividends because the kids have sleepovers at our house. I’m wary of letting my kids sleep at their friends’ houses if I don’t know the parents well, but I’m not nearly as wary of those same friends spending the night at my place, where I have much more control over things.

All the Viking’s seasons suck, but my fav first game is Bradford in 2017 when he threw for 346, 3 TD’s, to start the season off. Had a glimmer of hope for one game. We did all right under Keenuts but he didn’t have the horsepower of Bradford.

Yup, it was great for a week, living the Viking high life after beating the aints on Monday Night Football.

Bradford went 27 of 32, QBR of 143, and zinged a 21-yard pass to J. Wright in a tiny window and was named offensive player of week.

Diggs had 7/93 and would go on to the Minneapolis Miracle at the end of the season.

Bradford’s disappearance that year was very mysterious. I went back and looked for a play that showed any kind of injury and couldn’t find one.

It was even more mysterious than Bridgewater’s IMO. With that one there was a decent theory about Teddy getting his foot stepped on while he was trying to elude the pass rush in a preseason game. I think fil was the first one to mention it.

My favorite season is ’87, a plucky team that barely scraped into the playoffs after the players strike interruption. They roll into NO for the WC and strait boatrace the Saints, then the Anthony Carter destruction of SF in candlestick to set up an NFCCG with the Redskins, then the Darrin Nelson drop in the last minute seals the win for Was. It was my first real memory of playoff football for the purple. My dad was all pissed off but me being like 7 I said “don’t worry, they’ll be back”, he just laughed and said I didn’t know anything. Of course he was right, I didn’t know anything and every NFCCG they’ve made since then ends in dramatic failure or utter embarrassment.

It’s so painful because I roll into work sporting my “Biden Harris” cap (in the winter I’m even more bundled up) and have to take off the cap to put the mask on. Then when I get to my office I whip the mask off and usually hook one of my hearing aids at that time. Then after I change into scrubs I walk down to the department fridge with my lunch so have to put the mask back on. Rinse and repeat when I go walk the dog with my wife at noon. Rinse and repeat when I leave work at the end of the day. Sometimes I think the mask wearing will never end in the hospital.

No one was wearing a mask in my dentist’s office. I also know OrthoMontana (competing private group and the largest group of ortho docs in the state) does not require masks. I take those as positive signs.

Got the plague anyway in January this year, but Canada doesn’t care if you’ve got natural immunity, only that you have the boosters up to date, although there’s a bit of mumbo-jumbo about quarantine possibilities.

I believe that if you have a healthy diet you get all the vitamins you need and more. I think taking vitamin C or zinc when you think you are coming down with a cold only results in your pissing the money you spent on those pills down the drain. Then you throw in the price of getting an IV set and start.

I would never never never prescribe such a thing.

I’ve always been forthright about this. My stepkids are both too in tune with their bodies and are coming down with hantavirus or the plague every couple of weeks and I just say give it two weeks and if you’re still suffering give me a call.

Broke my tailbone sledding with the grandkids in December. The pain was significant for six weeks but despite the technologists offering to scan my sacrum and my wife saying you need to take at least some ibuprofen I was determined to tough it out. I read that article, and it’s not much better than the headline. The author lists the three criteria for the top 5 list (talent, longevity, meaningful games) and proceeds to list Favre as #2 while leaving Randall Cunningham off of the list.

He gives credit to Culpepper for making the cover of Madden and for having “the only playoff victory against the Packers in Vikings history” (MIN vs GB has only happened twice in the post season, and the other game had Joe Webb at QB).

Wade Wilson made his top 5 all time list. Wade Wilson.

Then he ranks Cousins as #1, and here’s part of his reasoning:

He’s only won us one meaningful playoff game. But if the Vikings continue to keep him as our franchise QB he’ll have more than enough time to lead us into multiple deep playoff runs.

yeah. Ponder’s arm nearly fell off. Sugarman saved it.

Vikings started 6-6 then 4-0 down the stretch starting with a huge win against a very good Texans team.

Peterson went 2k that year, and Percy Harvin was on MVP pace the first half of the season. What a waste. Terrible ending to a great season.

Chiefs suck outside Mahomes. Mahomes goes down for any period of time they’re donzo and may even be donzo with him.

Not my favorite stat, but ESPN’s big one (drives a lot of opinion articles)
QBR has Cousins ranked:
15th in 2021
19th in 2020
13th in 2019
16th in 2018

I prefer DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average)
and DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement)
which have him respectively ranked:
8th & 7th in 2021
10th & 9th in 2020
10th & 7th in 2019
20th & 13th in 2018

What this shows me is that he’s gotten more efficient as a Viking as time has passed, and that his reputation of throwing more yards than adding more value was more justified earlier in his time here, but less so in recent years.

It also tells me that ESPN plays a bit of popularity game with their rankings, or, less maliciously, that their analysis is naively lopsided in its priorities.

Justin Herbert played better than Cousins last year.

Somewhat humorously, Bridgewater played just better than Russel Wilson last year.

I just got a cast iron pan big enough to fit a pizza a year or so ago. It’s seasoning nicely. I should give pizza a try.

Homemade pizza is best on our pellet smoker pizza oven. Hands down.

To toughen myself up I place my hand palm down on the pizza stone when it is at full temp.

Meanwhile the traitor in chief still isn’t paying his bills. Never has, never will. You should vote for him while complaining about Biden:

Memphis Politicians Object To Police Escort At Trump Rally, Citing Unpaid Bills
“He’s notorious for not paying,” said City Councilmember Martavius Jones, who doesn’t want Memphis eating the costs of an upcoming Trump rally.

The Center for Public Integrity reported in 2020 that Trump owed nearly $2 million at that time to 14 different police agencies and local governments for the services they provided at his rallies.

You mean like when I went to his Minneapolis rally and tens of thousands of democrat/marxist soy boys and green-haired women and anarchists showed up to screech at peaceful rally-goers and were trying to instigate a riot?

Trust me, the farm boys and ex-military at the rally weren’t threatened by any of those idiots. Trump doesn’t bear any responsibility for your che wannabees.

That literally has nothing to do with Trump not paying his bills like he never has and his rally goers being slobs leaving behind a sea of trash like in NJ and Orlando and the list of cities goes on and on. You know what the best part is…..the piece of shit is just milking his dumbass followers for donations and they actually give their pittance to him lol….idiots.

I know a guy who worked extensively with both Austin and Milley and he says when they were lower/mid ranking officers they had integrity, but then somewhere during the period of 2008 and 2016 they had to pick between honor and politics and politics won.

One time I bought in to run a failing small-mid company, and I told the employees that they weren’t to bother me for a day, so I could analyze stuff, and then I’d set meetings with the heads of the departments in order of priority one at a time to discuss.

One of the department heads knocked on my door and insisted she had crap that had to be looked at. I looked at it, it wasn’t emergency-level, and I told her that I didn’t take kindly to a bit of deceit that she had something important, and wasn’t going to tolerate a distraction from me doing my job again.

An hour later I get intercommed from my AdminAssist that she was back. Apparently her badgering the previous guy was SOP…
