It’s great to be back after my couple-day hiatus. Had some thinking to do about some potential major life changes on the horizon, and the break was just what I needed. I hope everyone had a great weekend and beginning of the week.
As training camps are in full swing, the injury reports are starting to grow, and the Vikings are not immune. I saw the SHOCKING news that Irv Smith was injured. At least they’re hopeful that he’ll be back for the season opener, if he can manage to stay un-injured until then. I’m not sure how confident I am in that. What was Bud Grant’s old saying? There’s no ability like availability? Something along those lines.

You’re probably right and as many have said including me there’s a learning curve to installing a new system and a upload and execution bell curve you’re not going to easily short cut past. It will take the time it takes with the players they have. Reality is with the limited time on the practice field they have much of the evaluation with the guys they know they’re going to keep bleeds over in to the season. Going .500 through the first 6 games would be a win.

Had a long productive conversation with the “Premium Planning Consultant” at Fidelity. He actually had a lot of good points and I am seriously considering “hiring” the team. Basically revolves around putting my bond allocation into my retirement (deferred compensation) funds so that ordinary income tax rates don’t apply to dividends, and then starting up a separately managed account (SMA) to generate capital losses to defer capital gains…which can’t be done in EFT’s or mutual funds due to wash sale rule. For that they charge a management fee of 0.4% that gets smaller the more you invest. That might seem dumb since I am a index fund no load tiny fee investor but the tax advantages push the return well beyond a standard S&P 500 ETF. Anyone have experience with a SMA?

You’ve always had good advice. In this case, Fidelity is well aware of my financial situation. Since I work for a “nonprofit” I have a 403(b), 457(b), and 401(a). I also put money in (nondeductible) IRAs for my wife and I. My deferred compensation funds are maxed out year to year.
Basically the advisor talked about asset “location” as in shunting my bond allocation (and associated dividends subject to ordinary income tax at my high rate) to the retirement side of things, and equities taxed at the lower capital gain rate to the brokerage (taxed) side of things. Some mystery there as to how to move equities in my brokerage account to the tax deferred side and vice versa.
Otherwise, they are just proposing moving my capital in the brokerage account (mutual funds and ETF’s) into a SMA.
Sounds legit to me. I of course am studying up on it but figured some on here have more experience with SMA’s.
