Happy Hump Day, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us as we discuss the latest Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings updates, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the open thread, which is……open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here. Our one rule here is: “Remember, be cool to one another”. SKOL!!!!!!

The Vikings are still 2-1, and they are traveling to London for their next game, as they travel to Tottenham Spurs Stadium (goofy name if you ask me, but better than Wembley, named after one of the Fraggles) in London to take on the hated Saints. The one thing I do enjoy about London games is that kickoff is early so you can get the game over and have the rest of the day to do important things, like go fishing. Kickoff on Sunday is at 8:30 am central time.

I look for this to be a battle. Winston can be a decent QB at times, but he can be wildly inconsistent as well. If the Vikings can get pressure, something they haven’t done enough of the past couple weeks, then they could force Winston into making mistakes. If they give him all day to throw, it could be a long day, so let’s hope they figure out a way to generate pressure. They also need to do a better job in coverage and in stopping the run, as they’ll be going up against Kamara. In the end, I see the Vikings coming away with the W. For some reason, the team has played very well in London historically, and we honestly have a much better team.

With the early kickoff, does anyone have anything special planned? A get-together or crazy breakfast meal? I’m thinking of making a triple pig fatty, shown here on Tailgatemaster.com, tailgating website of Admiral Big Gun. I’ve made this a couple times in the past, and it is as amazing as it sounds/looks. If you haven’t tried one yet, and you own a smoker, then what are you waiting for?

Maybe some tropical storm wind gust to 50+ and some rain but not much more than that IF it tracks due north and doesn’t go east to the Atlantic. Not too worried. Florida is getting absolutely demolished.

It’s not, at all. The “fun experience” wears off real quick when you have a massive clean up, you’re out of power for a week or more, it’s balls hot out with no ac, everything is closed down or in theses folks case mostly destroyed. They’ll be a fair amount of folks that won’t want to stay there after this completely blows up their world.

I wouldn’t know. I like to assume so, but plenty of potential there for drama.

For sure. I diagnose an unexpected badness at least once a day, usually more. Sucks but that’s the job description.

I might have said this before, but it is weird to me that my shop and many others suppress pathology results from the patient portal for 72 hours, to “give the surgeons time to call and discuss the results rather than have the patient receive devastating information alone” but my reports are available instantaneously. That older individual won’t be reading my report and thinking gee this is a bunch of gobbledegook but overall it sounds fine.

I’m a general radiologist. After residency (four years of general radiology training) I did a fellowship (extra training for a year) in neuroradiology. In Billings I got bookended into doing neuro all day unless I was on call, I’ve read well over 80,000 brain and spine studies over the years and have probably seen everything under the sun neuro wise in that time. The move to Glendive required me to step back into general radiology. I do it all except read mammograms. That is taken care of by specialized radiologists who do nothing but breast imaging.

My mom passed from CLL lymphoma. Diagnosed at age 50 fought it for 15 yrs until no chemotherapy’s worked and she was tired of fighting. She’d still be alive if not for that. Blood disorders are my families bugaboo. If you can dodge them we live to 95-100 generally.

Great longevity! You’ll be posting for a long time yet.

Small world. My dad was diagnosed with CLL at age 54, lymphocytosis with smudge cells on a CBC done for preop purposes prior to a herniorrhaphy. Never was treated as the lymphocytosis was stable for decades. In retrospect was technically not CLL but that is what they considered it for many years and he was basically a stoic that wouldn’t get a bone marrow anyhow. Years later when I was in med school I examined him and his spleen was easily the largest I have ever felt, or for that matter seen on scans. Years after that they diagnosed him with splenic lymphoma (which was likely the primary all along), had a splenectomy of the largest spleen the surgeon had ever seen by far. He felt great for the next year which I am glad that was the last time I saw him, feeling well and full of energy for the first time in years. A few months later he died of acute myelogenous leukemia from transformation of the lymphoma, very fast death and I did not make it home to see him die. All in all I’m glad he didn’t suffer very much at the end. Had just turned 78.

For sure there are days I wish I could talk to my dad. Like I said, I am glad the last time I saw him in person he was healthy, happy, we had a nice long walk and talk. The funny thing is that my mom is nearly that age now, and, I am opening up my soft parts a little here, she just isn’t my mom anymore. I don’t know if it’s her brain, or stubbornness, or what, but she won’t talk to me anymore, won’t leave her room at the senior living center, etc. I mean I have called my parents every week since moving out at 17, through good times and bad times, but it has reached the point I can’t do it anymore. She has checked out, won’t tell me why she won’t do anything anymore, won’t eat, etc…I mean I was on the phone with her for thirty minutes Sunday and she said about six words. Literally just sat in dead silence for two plus minutes several times. My sister says she is very angry at everyone for how things played out. Really she is acting exactly as her dad did at the end, some stubborn genes there.

TL;DR version I held it together when I talked to my dad on the phone minutes before he died, we exchanged I love you’s and after I hung up the phone I bawled like a baby despite the fact we were never that close in adulthood. I’ll miss my mom like heck but my reaction will be different if they call me and say she died.

Man thats tough to see her change like that. Its like you said she is not your mom anymore…My mom certainly had anger issues at the world after dad died, and she can still be a bit cranky and depressed about everything, and I get that…but she still wants to talk to her kids and is thrilled my family is visiting her over Thanksgiving, she has not “checked out”…..

Getting old is a MF’er I have sympathy for MT’s mom. Yes some handle growing old and becoming less independent with mortality knocking at the door well but some do not.

There’s regrets, resentments and fears. We certainly can’t judge until we’re going through it ourselves. I think endless empathy and understanding is all we can offer.

My kinda bullet points on the matter.
-dad died. She had to start doing things she never did her adult life, like plan meals, do all the shopping, pay bills. I don’t think she took time to grieve.
-thrived at playing cards and helping prep same with senior activity center.
-COVID. Extreme isolation.
-began getting extremely paranoid. Refused to see the doctor about it. Insisted she was fine on her own in Wainwright, far from any other family (my sister lives in Calgary 4 hours away).
-drove her Explorer through the wall of the senior center. Fortunately no one in the kitchen. Scrapes and bruises.
-full inpatient workup. In hospital for 30 days. Doc says nothing really wrong with her, but recommends senior living. She insists on Battle River Lodge in WW.
-Fails to thrive. Depression? Anxiety? Stops doing adequate self care while waiting for spot at Lodge. Nothing packed or given away in her condo even though move out day rapidly approaching
-Can’t get out of bed one morning. Bed soiled. Ambulance called. 30 more days in hospital. Even more workup.
-sister empties condo. Doesn’t want to move to Lodge even though spot opened up. Can’t go to condo now. Talks about getting a car so she can drive hahahaha apparently doc said he thought she could no way mom you aren’t taking out schoolkids in the crosswalk.
-Fails to thrive in Lodge. Gets UTI, no self care, Lodge starts calling with concerns. Back in hospital another thirty days. Doc finally signs medical POA over to my sister and I.
-moved to great facility in Calgary blocks from my sister. Refuses to do any activities. Skips meals. Went from 130 pounds in April to 115 pounds a week ago.

So pissed that she’s not on her own, has no car, not in her hometown. I think she realizes she looks like a complete fool but is too stubborn to snap out of it. Refuses to confide with doctor or advocate for what she needs.

i can imagine how hard it would be if you had someone in your life that helped with all sorts of everyday life things poof, gone.

I have a somewhat similar situation with a loved one where they refuse to budge on a certain matter that is a cause of extreme stress and unhappiness for myself as they let it ruin their life. Tried to reach them every way I could think of: heartfelt dialogue, counseling, pastor and so on and so forth.

They refuse to listen, and they don’t even have old age as an excuse. I finally gave it up. I can only do what I can do. If they won’t meet me anywhere on the scale, then I don’t get any life points for letting it ruin my life, as well.

One of these days, a major facing-of-the-truth is going to come up, and I don’t think they have the tools to handle it, and it will be a bad day. But I can’t control the choices they make. I can only do the best I can.

Wow, that’s rough, so sorry MT. Give yourself permission to feel sad and mourn what is ultimately the loss of both parents.

When my aunt (who thankfully never lost her mind) was unconscious for the last week or so, we did all kinds of things that we knew she would have enjoyed, such as played her favorite music and even had musical friends give her private, soft, concerts. I don’t know if she was aware of these things or they gave her comfort, but they gave US comfort that we tried.

May I suggest that you do some little things for her while expecting nothing back in terms of response from her. Maybe think of it as a gift from your Dad to her. Examples: tell her what your favorite lullaby was as a child, and sing it to her. Tell her some family stories or favorite or funny memories. Think of a trait that your kids have that reminds you of her or your Dad. Any little things that you know she would have enjoyed if she were still in her right mind. These things may or may not bring her some comfort, but they will bring you peace that you tried.

It’s rough when that happens. My mom’s dementia got real bad and with that came some anger. It was also hard to talk to her because she asked the same question multiple times in a 5 minute phone call. Then she had several strokes and was bed or wheelchair ridden and that really was tough on her. She was very independent since dad had gone. While all of us kids were sad when she passed, we mostly wished it would have happened sooner so she didn’t have to suffer so much.

I am opening up my soft parts a little here, she just isn’t my mom anymore…my reaction will be different if they call me and say she died.

Sorry to hear about that.

I think your different reaction will be because you’ve already done part of the grieving process.

she is very angry at everyone for how things played out

I can imagine getting there myself. There are times when I feel fed up “up to here!” (holds hand over head) with people, even my kids.

It’s not bad… feels less snappy than a .300 Win Mag. Not sure why.

It’s on the low low end of bear guns, certainly less than .416 Rigby’s, which are the current fave of bear hunters.

I’m probably going to upgrade to a longer-distance .338 Lapua at some point. I’d like to go sheep or goat hunting without them laughing at me as I struggle to get my old carcass up the mountain and then watching them flip me the raspberry right as they disappear over the top.

Thread Summary Today:

Some information was posted painting the Vikings as a top 5 pass blocking team, they’ve looked improved but not top ten.

A question regarding math came up regarding Bradbury being the 6th ranked center out of 30 when there are 30 teams

Kodiak referenced bandcamp

Hump Day gifs were posted, including one for MT’s private reflection time

Theme parks were discussed

Woke companies include Disney, Gillete, Target,

Wrenage apparently struggled getting up and is incredibly hairy, also went to the dentist

VP and Freezey might be serial killers

Everyone thinks the Vikings will win Sunday, some think it’ll be a cakewalk even, which means they’ll lose in epic meltdown fashion.

PPB posted some TL;DR analysis

Skoliberals is finally back from holiday and back to work

KOC is much more aggressive in the last 2 mins of the first half than most coaches

Jameis Winston sucks and has a broken back, most hope he plays instead of the Red Rocket

Eggslusher named the fanpost thingy so he’ll be the first to post

PPB said B-Rad is transitioning nicely

Shaving was discussed

A small number of people who are clearly delusional and very wrong said they are fine without the z key, but hey if you want to navigate the thread in rudimentary fashion like a caveman who am I to judge.

Pastors were discussed

Some Iti planks on his bike in races

PPB doesn’t know how to fix a stove and had to buy a new one, a discussion on appliances ensued

Michael Pierce (former Vikings) went on IR, per Lifer he is a “useless sack of shit”

A reminder of the cheating from the 2009 NFCCG was posted

Stonks confused

No sign of five, he’s still in bed like the rest of the lazy millennials despite not being from that generation, have to admire the commitment.

ITS NATIONAL DRINK A BEER DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have no malice towards anyone besides the saints…

I’d like to post a couple thoughts on this myself.

I don’t hate people. I love people. Love speaks the truth.

Here’s how I look at it. Do I think there are any homosexuals that have not committed some non-sexual sin, such as lying/theft/blasphemy/etc.? No, I do not. Do I think there are any heterosexuals that have not committed some non-sexual sin? Again, no.

I think everyone’s a sinner aside from sexual sin.

And I’d happily help a couple of lesbians change a flat tire.

NoDakRube
Reply to  peterplaysbass
28 September 2022 3:47 pm

Exactly….love the sinner hate the sin….
I have friends and relatives who are gay…some of whom are absolutely awesome people…doesn’t mean I approve of or necessarily condone their lifestyle…
Although personally I have found most gay people fairly normal (as normal as cisgender, anyway) but the trannies are nuts…I am sorry, they are crazy, but I would still help them change a flat tire…

I dunno, seems like the dumb people have been in charge of home remodeling far too long. They seem to spend all their time fixing up the kitchen and the crapper.

Nothing about generators, bigger shops, tornado shelters, massive storage, room for the toys, a game processing plant room, trophy room, and making the garage bigger so you can get your 12-foot tall coal-burning 4×4 monster truck in the garage.

Pfft I’m sticking with a joint failed in the pipeline. Or a commercial ship dragged anchor over an exposed portion. Why would the US Navy be so stupid as to damage a pipeline with a surface warship when they have more submarines than any other Navy. For that matter the Germans have some nice quiet diesel electrics.

Crumple zones are one of the better inventions on cars of the last few decades, except when you have to spend 5k to fix the bumper on the squirrel you ran into.

But big vehicles with crumples are far better than little vehicles with crumples.

Just like big ammo is better than little ammo, all other things being equal.

We are “all stainless”. Gotta keep up with the Joneses. We’ve actually been pleased with them, and they were not expensive.

In Billings, our “mansion” had Viking stainless appliances. The refrigerator/freezer was a tank, hated when I had to move it to work on things. Oven took forever to reach temperature. Also the oven almost put me in the ground with 220 volts when I was replacing the display and buttons with the power on and no one else home.

So all in all I would say you should go stainless if you want to be in the cool crowd, but you don’t have to spend a lot. Just use Consumer Reports.

With potatoes, I like using Yukon Golds. Toss them with some olive oil and a dry rub. I typically use a honey type seasoning like the one below. After that, just put them on the top rack, flip occasionally and once they are getting a little softer you should be good to throw your steaks on.

Will have to try that. Sounds damn good.

I use reds a lot, slice into medallions, season with some Lawry’s garlic salt, pepper, maybe some ranch dressing – wrap into a foil packet (poke a couple holes in the side to keep them from blowing up like a balloon and opening the packet).

Do about the same with yellow crookneck squash and green zucchini, but they only take a few minutes to cook.

I love grilled zucchini too. Again, I go with olive oil and then some combination of garlic seasoning on long slices. Put them on the copper grill mat for a couple minutes and done. The copper grill mats are awesome for vegetables, fish and even chicken. You get a better heat than putting foil down (it ends up blocking the heat so you’re just baking I feel), and with stuff that likes to fall apart you don’t lose half of your dinner.

Adrenaline

I cube potatoes and sweet potatoes, mix in a bowl with some olive oil, a bit of garlic, salt, pepper, a bit of regular veggie oil, and a bit of water.

Spread it out on rectangle of tin foil, fold the top closed, put on top shelf of grill. Sometimes add mushrooms.

Easy peasy.

It’s good. I’m sure some people will swear by a scorching hot grill, which is fine. It will give you charring similar to wood-fired oven. But I like my heat manageable. Grill one side to light brown crust (light coat of olive oil or avocado oil on both sides), flip, add toppings and when everything is heated through and cheese is melted, it is done.

Hey MT, not sure if you saw my reply on the first thread yesterday. I was in a meeting all afternoon, came back, replied to a bunch of comments on that thread before I saw there was a new one up. Anywho, I do have one of the Solo Stoves. If you are thinking about getting one, I highly recommend. I was leery at first, but I got a good deal on it so gave it a try. If you don’t over fill it there is no smoke, the fire is super hot and I especially like that you don’t get as much popping and embers flying. That is particularly comforting when we are in the mountains and I am worried about burning the forest down.

I have the Bonfire as well. What’s nice about it, once it is started and heated up there are little to no sparks. All I ever burn is pine, because as you said that’s about all there is here. There is also a screen you can get for the top and a base for it. It doesn’t seem to get super hot on the bottom but slightly discolored my grass when used in the backyard. I would get the base if you will use it on your concrete so you don’t break that. It will probably be ok, but the oak especially will probably burn a little hotter and may cause issues.

I see an even-ish game if Quirk plays at his average level and turnovers/injuries don’t play a major role

May not be the popular opinion, but the lack of a “z key” function doesn’t bother me that much. Click the wheel, then you can just move your mouse up or down a little and it will keep scrolling (the farther you move the mouse, the faster it will scroll). Left click or roll the wheel to stop. You can scroll left and right with it too, but that only comes in handy on big spreadsheets typically.

Some friends used to mock me for taking the family to Disneyworld several times when the kids were young. The look on the kids faces when something cool happens is worth the money. They understood that once they took their own kids a few years later.

Also, went to the black hills and spent more per day that we did at Disney world. Flintstone land is not quite as nice as Disneyworld…..

Now that the kids are adults, I am done with that place until the future grandkids are old enough to go on rides….

While a bit spendy, it seemed worth it to me. Early admission into the parks, and just took the bus/monorail everywhere.

Have fun. Wear sunscreen. Pack some water and refill at the water fountains. Try to minimize how many meals you eat at the theme parks.

Not necessarily in that order.

I take my kids to Valley Fair (rides and stuff)

Nintendo World is coming to the US in a year or two, I think – we’ll have to see if I pull the trigger on that now or wait for grandkids

Those water parks are an absolute blast. Swam with the sharks at Typhoon Lagoon. Summit Plummet at Blizzard beach is a great waterslide.
Have fun!

I’ve been to Six Flags in CA, Six Flags over Texas, both Disneys, Knott’s, Great America, Marine World, etc.

The one I always like the most was Busch Gardens. Not that crowded and lots and lots of rides with not much lines.

I’ve been to none of those, will probably end up going to Disney World at some point though.

We took the kids to Disney World a few times. I always hated it. It was a 1000 degrees, you stood in line for a half hour (or longer) for a ride that lasted 5 minutes (or less). And we did that over and over. I hope my grandkids don’t want to go.

Been to both, and yes, the waterparks in Disney are better than any at the Dells.
Been to Kalahari, great wolf lodge, Noah’s ark, etc.
Disney knows how to build things and make money. Not in that order.

My wife tells me the Royal Caribbean private water park is the best she has been in. Was scheduled to go, then the plague hit.

Well apparently the Vikings have much better talent and depth at the S position than they do at CB, which seems to be true as Metellus grades 82, Bynum 65, Smith 65, whereas PP 61, Dantzler 58, Sullivan 56, and rookie Evans 55.

TL;DR – Safeties are at least average, CBs mostly below average.

Hey GF, it appears the Front Porch has slowed way down so it will not be a daily thread. But if you want it to succeed, shouldn’t it be bumped up to the front page? Right now it is buried so deep that any random viewers will not be able to find it.

Hi Five. I know you will appreciate this post.

We can’t really bump articles back up which is annoying. I think that was on Brads list to the developers to get the home screen tweaked.

We can “clone” them but all comments would be lost

I could see two big spots on the front page – one for the latest daily open thread, and one for the front porch – and then maybe a row of thumbnails below that for all of the proper articles

Do I get the privilege of the first “Fan Forum” since I named it? Also, do I get to set the rules on the article? Because that might sway me to write a piece that would enrage Five (doesn’t take much with that delicate snowflake) and say no political speech or swearing haha.

i’m not crowing him or the vikings when i say this…

but i do like that SO FAR it seems to be completely opposite than what we did last year.
Not only was zim a pansy and never tried to do much at the end of the first half (perhaps we did sometimes, i don’t remember many times though), but our end the halves defenses were so bad.
so it’s just nice that SO FAR, it’s seems to have changed a bit..
