Our vacation to Florida was AWESOME! Disney World was fun, of course, especially for kiddo. It really was a cool experience. We walked an average of about 12 miles a day while we were there.
On the way home, our first flight left late because some lady was flipping out on the plane having an anxiety attack, so they had to taxi back to the gate & let her off. Apparently, she’s traveled internationally before, so I’m not sure what the issue was, but it caused a 15-minute delay in taking off. When we landed in Minneapolis, we had 8 minutes to get from gate G20 to gate G1. Kiddo and I took off and ran all the way to the gate, and we got there JUST as they were fixin’ to lock it up and take off. We told them there were about 5 more people coming behind us, including my wife, so they held the gate for everyone. If we’d have missed that, we’d have had to wait about 5 hours for the next flight. It’s been a long day, it’s about 6:30 pm and I’m pretty sure we’ll be in bed before 7:00.
Vikings @ Dolphins
The Vikings-Dolphins game was so fun. Word to the wise, if you get tickets on the visitor side of the stadium, be prepared for heat. They say it was about 120 degrees down there, and that is no exaggeration. Due to me forgetting to account for the time change, we arrived WAY earlier than we needed to. We rolled into Miami at around 10:00, thinking that would give us time to check everything out before the noon kickoff. Yeah, it was a 1:00 kickoff when you’re on eastern time. Whoops. So, we spent about 5 hours in that sun & heat. Thankfully, I love the heat, but it got long even for me.
I’ll have lots of pictures to share once I am able to upload them all. After all is said and done, the Minnesota Vikings are 5-1 heading into the bye, and they’re two games ahead of the second-place Packers in the NFC North. Far ahead of where most expected them to be at this point (not me and some of our more reasonable folks here, but most people).
Proud Dad
One other thing to share. I did have a proud dad moment last night. We went to parent-teacher conferences, and kiddo is doing amazing. His scores are far above where they expect him to be at the end of the year and even ahead of where they expect him to be in second grade. They’ve been placing him in advanced classes, and they say he is a model citizen and a wonderful friend to the other kids. Very proud of that little fella. SKOL!!!

What’s everyone’s whisky/whiskey of choice? I am big into heavily peated along with heavily sherried scotch. I just tried placing an order yesterday and found out a webiste from the UK I’ve been using for years can no longer ship to SD… which sucks! They have great scotches we can’t get in the states and they also have been getting bourbons that are incredibly hard to find in the states as well.

Bit of a notch up 50-80 range- Old Forrester 1920 & Single Barrel, Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered, Blanton’s, Four Roses Single Barrel, Heaven Hill BIB, Colonel Taylor variations, Wild Turkey rare breed. Lots others as well in that space.

Well going straight to Lagavulin is diving into the deep end. I would start people on like a Bowmore 15 I think is the best bang for your buck whisky out there. It has some peat and also lots of sherry influence to go with it.

If we assume the Vikings beat every team that’s currently ranked below them and lose to every team ranked above them, they’ll finish 12-5. I don’t see them beating the Packers in week 17, though.
As of now, I think the ceiling is 13-4 and the floor is 9-8
The Giants and Jets are the two closest ranked opponents and both games are in Minnesota. I have the Vikings going 1-1 in these games. I think the Giants will taper between now and week 16. Jets are a question mark. How will they look in week 13? If the Vikings are coming off of 3 straight losses will they see the Jets game as a must-win?
Packers are not as good as the Vikings, but winning in Lambeau in the winter is difficult, and predicting a season sweep is foolhardy.
The Patriots game is a stretch, and the least likely to flip among the reasonably questionable outcomes. It is in Minnesota, though. If the pass rush is cooking and the offense can manage points against a surprisingly good defense, Vikings could maybe sneak a win here.

My take on Vikings so far and going forward.
Completely new coaching staff, completely new ideas on offense and switching D to 3-4 and not playing any “skill positions” for a single down in preseason means those 1st 6 games were preseason and they are 5-1. Far outweighed my expectations! Winning close games that have been lost in the last 2-3 years
The way the D looked last weekend(even thought it was against 3rd and 2nd string QBs) gave me hope that they are getting it.
Offense is spotty but they don’t seem scared to make plays and or mistakes so I think it will free up things going forward.
Special teams is SO much better than it has been in years past!
I feel like 12-5 is attainable but 11-6 is more probable. Also think we are 1 and done in the playoffs because Cousins is and will be the QB and that is my greatest concern.
This is all reasonable. I’m hopeful that the new regime can coax more out of Kirk in the playoffs. It remains to be seen, but I agree, it’s my biggest concern as well.
Fivel will be sending me cigars (again) at 9 wins, could happen by week 11 or 12.

Cousins and the pass rush are my greatest concerns. I think Cousins can rise to the challenge if the oline does a more consistent job of pass blocking. They’ve been much better, and very good at times, but Cousins needs consistent blocking to really shine.
Yeah, the pass rush is spotty. They’re getting a lot of sacks, but they aren’t applying pressure often enough and consistently enough. You give ANY NFL QB 5 seconds to throw, they’ll complete passes, even shitty Mitch Kramer in Jacksonville.
How many times a game do we blitz? It is hard to see us bring more than 4 rushers. Of course, with our 7 guys back, there are still gaps in coverage

The single most important factor is our lack of injuries. In 62 seasons we have never had this few injuries. The Cards have 13 guys on their injury report while we have zero starters.

Funny you mention that, I have always rented from Budget and have their “FastPass” option. In 2021 we got stuck without a car in Orlando even though we prepaid. When we got to Nashville the FastPass line was closed and it was clear they had an inventory crunch. Started to panic after 25 minutes in line, my wife sent me to see if any of the other counters were less busy as we were still ten people back in line. All the other counters were busy, including the Sixt counter. At the moment I was on the polar opposite end of the airport my wife calls me and frantically says the line is moving and we are next in line, hurry up and get back here!

I did most of the check-in online prior to arriving. When I got there, I went to the counter & they politely told me that I didn’t even need to stop there, and they gave me directions to where the car was and the check-in booth. I walked up, they checked my ID, handed me the key, and pointed me to the car. It was honestly the best car rental experience I’ve ever had.

For that matter, the low tire pressure light went on in our CRV as we left Pigeon Forge. I stopped and checked the pressures and they were all fine but for the next four hours on I-40 I kept envisioning a blowout as we were being boxed in by semis on both sides.
Yikes, that would be a bad feeling. I keep a digital tire pressure gauge in my pickup. It has the sensors that tell me what the tire pressure is, but I like to check them. I’m shocked at how accurate the sensors are, they’re normally spot-on or within 1 psi.

That was the part I was most proud of. Being good at school has much to do with God-given ability, although it also has to do with working hard. Being a good friend & nice to others is something that comes from within & from a choice you make inside. They have a kid who is from another country in the class, and he hardly says a word. She said they sit him next to Eli intentionally, & they’ve become very good friends even though he never talks. Really cool stuff, I get somewhat emotional talking about it. Again, very proud.

Changed habits, started insulin, cut out all soda (was really bad) I’m still big but I eat better, more disciplined and get out more. Work in progress. For some odd reason my wife wants me around longer.

It does. But I did it to myself. Never met a cheeseburger I didn’t like. Extra slice of pie? Yes please! Had to totally flip how I view food – still a work in progress and I struggle around the holidays (EVERYTHING is edible) but I definitely feel better. I’ll be 44 in a few weeks and I feel like I’m extending my life. So that’s good.
It helps when you start viewing food as fuel for your body, but it doesn’t happen overnight. You’ll get there!

As I had been sipping on thimbles of whiskey I immediately beat feet over to my wife at the table and surreptitiously watched the spectacle. Was hilarious watching the old married guys watching google eyed and their wives pulling them away like a hungry hound from a pork chop.

One of my goals is to start being a morning runner. I love running, but I don’t like running in the morning. Living on eastern time & getting up early for a week really helped jump start my revised sleep schedule. Popped up at 5am, ready to attack the world. Got to work a couple hours early, digging out of the hundreds of emails that have accumulated over the past 8 days. Yuck. More coffee.

When we were traveling & staying in hospitals all the time, I got thrown off schedule & still haven’t gotten locked back in. I still run & lift, but not consistently. Now is the time.

It’s weird how people’s biorhythms work with that stuff. I am best at running in the morning. I don’t mind it in the evening, but my times are always way worse.
My nephew is the opposite. He can barely complete a run in the morning and thrives in the evening.
Early winter morning running is crazy. One stumbles out in darkness, runs in darkness, finishes and is like…what the heck just happened? Did I really do that?
This year I think I need to get an LED head lamp. I go out of town and run gravel roads, so I am in total darkness sometimes.
I actually run better in the morning, but I just don’t enjoy it as much. I dunno, something about running on an empty stomach or something. Really odd. Whenever I run in races, they’re always in the morning, and I compete well in them, but I just haven’t been able to get into doing my leisure running in the morning. I just need to quit being a bitch & do it.

This September I ran in a 5K and got second place in my age group. Toward the end of the race, this guy came up behind me and passed me. “Good job,” I said. “Way to finish strong.”
He didn’t even acknowledge me. In my brain, I know it’s not personal. He was probably in his own little pain cave, but after the race, I was like…I am going to obliterate that guy next September! 🙂
I think this winter I will go on an actual 5K plan. I’d like to get it down in the 26-minute range. I shaved another 30 seconds off this summer, but I am getting to the point where I need to be more structured to keep improving.
That’s a good plan, use whatever it takes to motivate. I used to run my 10k in about 40 minutes or so & did my half-marathon in about an hour & 40, I’d love to get back to those times, or even close to them. That was about 10 years ago.
I know a guy who is 61 and ran a 42:40 10K at that same September event (you can do a 5K or 10K. I do a 5K because that is what my nephew runs).
That 61-year-old guy is a tough. He doesn’t look like much, but pound-for-pound he is an animal.
So he proves there is still good times after 60 even!

I’m not sure how close you live to a city but where I hunt when the sun goes down it is…well…dark. Sometimes I can’t see my hand in front of my face. I take small steps when that happens. I certainly wouldn’t want to be running as my chances of stepping in a hole and breaking an ankle would be significant.
A lot of times HD has those head lamps on sale for cheap.
My recommendation: Harbor Freight for stuff like that. You can buy several of them for the price you’ll pay for one elsewhere. They work, and if you lose one, you won’t give a shit because you have another one & you’re only out a couple bucks.

Yeah, it gets dark-dark. I run in rural Minnesota. On the four-mile route I take, there is one light per mile for two of the miles, no lights on another mile and city lights going out on the first mile.
There is always enough ambient light from the stars to know where the road is in the country, but you are in a cocoon of black.

There is a different mentality to this team than under Zimmer. I think Zimmer kept the team on edge. Winning also makes things easier. I still think this team is a bit of a paper tiger. And they have been fortunate to play teams that are missing key starters. It will be interesting to see if this coaching staff can correct some of the flaws over the bye week.

Also very true that there are many flaws that need to be corrected as soon as possible, but so far, I like what this team is showing under the new regime.
