Happy Thursday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us as we discuss the latest Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings updates, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the open thread, which is……open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here. Our one rule here is: “Remember, be cool to one another”. Also, a word to the wise, don’t feed the trolls. SKOL!!!!!!

I can’t believe it’s only Thursday. I’ve been thinking it was Thursday ever since Tuesday, I’m ready for this week to end. So, Friday, if you could just go ahead and hurry up & get here, that would be super spectacular. Our trip to Florida interrupted many of my usual tasks, one of the tasks it interuppted was getting my boat winterized, so that still isnt’ done. Since it’s still not winterized, I figured a guy might as well take the boat fishing. Since we’re gonna be going fishing, I figured a guy might as well rent a cabin on Devils Lake and go try to catch a few of those fall walleye and enjoy a cigar or two (thanks Five!). My wife is off reffing volleyball, so it’s just kiddo and I, so lock up your women! SKOL!!!!!!!!

In case you hadn’t heard the news, Philly got better. Not the city, the team. The city still sucks, but their football team got better.

Here’s a stat..

“I think second-and-long and third-and-long need to be better,” Cousins said Monday.
Thirty-five quarterbacks have dropped back to pass 100 times this season. None of them has been worse than Cousins when facing second or third down with more than 7 yards to reach the first-down marker.*
(*According to expected points added per dropback, a statistic that tracks how many points a team is expected to score on each dropback. In these particular situations, Cousins, at minus-0.47, ranks 35th out of 35, per TruMedia.)

Vikings will win 27 to 24.
The Vikings are strong like our economy and I see nothing but rainbows and puppy dogs ahead. Pure domination like Biden dominates all his foes.
Also, I’ve really had a great time today.

When did Red states ever give a shit about freedom? They are the party of banning books, banning freedom of expression, censoring art, hindering voter turn out, wants to force their religion, their morals on you…

Also… when did a blue state ever give a shit about freedom? They want to forcibly take your money, ban speech, wants rid of the 2nd amendment, wants to force their way of thinking on you or they are offended bunch of pussies… etc…

Neither care about freedom, or you, or this country. They car about keeping the rich overlords that supply them money happy… that’s it.

“Gas prices are continuing to go down. And because are going down, we’re making serious progress on getting prices close to what they were before the pandemic,” Biden said Wednesday. “The most common price right now in America is three dollars and thirty-nine cents a gallon.”

The AAA places the national gas price average at $3.76 per gallon, however. Gas prices in February 2020, just prior to the pandemic, were at $2.51 per gallon, a far cry from today’s rate.

Here’s some actual economics for the puke liberals on here.

You have a truck b/c you work construction. You fill tank 1x a week, 25 gallon tank.

25 x 2.50 = $62.50
25 x 3.75= $93.75

$31.25 per week higher so $125/month. Double that with food also. $250/month. That’s just food and gas.

That’s $3000 alone.

I was learning a little bit about the “Demon Core” today where scientists built a core for a nuclear bomb and would then test how close they could bring it to critical without going critical. Pretty crazy.

One scientist, Slotin, was OSHA’s nightmare. He would basically do criticality experiments manually holding the tip of a screwdriver between two spheres of the core. If the spheres touched, the reaction would start.

So, of course, he slipped one day, and the spheres touched. He got a lethal dose of rads before he got the two spheres apart again.

That is pure lunacy. I mean, I’ve gone too far up a step ladder before, but I don’t think I would skip safety protocols while working on a nuclear core…

It looks like familiarity breeds contempt under all circumstances.

The cast of Monty Python had something like that planned – they were going to gradually decrease the volume of the transmission of their program, which would cause viewers to start gradually turning up their TV sets. They planned to get all the way to the point where there was no sound being broadcast, hoping every TV in England would be at full volume, then have a loud explosion.

Show producers wouldn’t allow it because they feared financial issues with all the blown TV speakers and hospital bills from heart attacks.

You know the descriptor in a murder mystery of the protagonist “shivering uncontrollably”? I started spiking a fever just before bed last night, temp was 102.1, my eyes felt like pissholes in the snow and my tongue was thick and dry, like a hangover from drinking three shandys. Laid out in the RV, wake up and I’m shivering, pull the blankets tight around me but I have to piss. Rather than open the door from the shop into the studio and cause the dog to bark and wake my wife, I decide to step outside to relieve myself. For the next ninety seconds I was shivering like a dog shitting razor blades, no crap I couldn’t even hold onto my unit. Climbed back into bed curled up in a ball fell asleep woke up later drenched in sweat. Temp down to 99.9 this morning. A pox on you SARS-CoV2!

Here’s my post that started it all.

You guys are hilarious. Please never, ever, ever enter finance since you can’t separate personal bias from cold hard facts.

You read the WSJ?

They had predicted 2.3% growth.

Why?

Imports dropped 6.9%, Exports rose 14.4%. The shrinking trade gap inflated the headline GDP number in the third quarter by adding 2.8 percentage points of growth.

That’s why.

I did not mean to imply that the economy was doing great just because the current data is not backing up dumpster fire.

We very well could get to dumpster fire status, or not if you believe this guy:

I picked the Vikings to lose this Sunday, but I really know nothing. I’ve only watched about eight quarters of football so far. I saw the Vikings/Packers game, about a quarter of the Eagles game, about a quarter of the Lions game and then bits of a few other Sunday night games. That’s the way September and October work.

I prefer 3 p.m. and night games. They are easier to catch. When I run the league, expect to see no noon games. League will start in November. I’m not worried about bad weather in outdoor stadiums. America will buy every team an enclosed stadium.

Next, I’m GPSing the ball. We are speeding up the game. If a game is not over in two hours and 45 minutes, both teams lose. Overtime is gone. If the game ends in a tie, both teams lose. This will force more two-point plays. Also, all field goals over 50 yards are worth four points.

Playoffs will go back to 12 teams. Preseason is gone. Instead, we will have a Pro-Bowl-like thing before the season starts. The winning conference will be awarded extra draft picks.

Pregame shows will be severely curtailed. They will last for one half hour before games. The rest of the time will show Three Stooges reruns, which are more edifying.

If an announcer repeatedly speaks about something that gets mentioned every game, they are fired. For example, “I shook Adrian Peterson’s hand before the game. Wow!”

That guy would be removed while on air.

Dennis Miller is back.

Thursday Night Football is gone.

On Thanksgiving, only teams that actually matter will play.

Wrenage
Reply to  Wrenage

They are not in reality and now they are chasing as rates go up more and they lose more. 25% will figure it out in the next qtr, the rest will stay stupid and get into real trouble. Very few (which is fkn amazing) realize what is going on economically. I tend to Trust Mark Zandi’s take on things, and I seriously doubt anyone is cooking the books.

Most likely scenario:

“If you take a step back and look at GDP, it’s gone effectively nowhere over the last year,” says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. “One quarter or two it’s down a bit. This quarter it’s up a bit. But net-net, we’re kind of treading water.”

If anyone cares to know what the key details are:

  • consumer spending slowed to a 1.4% rate from 2% in the prior quarter. Consumer purchases account for about 70% of U.S. economic activity.

So a slowdown here is big.

  • Imports dropped 6.9%, Exports rose 14.4%. The shrinking trade gap inflated the headline GDP number in the third quarter by adding 2.8 percentage points of growth.

.

  • Inflation rose at an annual 4.2% annual rate, down from 7.3%. Gas prices

Unbiased future predictions:

Exports will slow and domestic demand will sharply drop from higher interest rates

US will enter a recession in the first half of 2023.

I was talking to a bigwig at Cargill a couple weeks ago and they are not only downsizing almost all packaging but they are finally able to take the training wheels off food pricing, since there are shortages at virtually all food companies. Many of their prices are doubling as we speak.

Serious question:
Who is cooking the books? My understanding of the people that put out the economic data is that the rank and file don’t change much from admin. to admin.

So in order to cook the books, you would need a lot of people in on this conspiracy.

Can you show me how they are doing it?
I’m sure it would make one hell of a news story.

Adrenaline
Reply to  Big Stupid Face
27 October 2022 11:41 am

Serious answer…

The people who collect the raw data don’t change much.

The top managers are told by the administration to fix the numbers to make them look better, and so the top managers tell the middle managers that they should select or weight different items in their raw data.

“Another main measure is the personal consumption expenditures price index, or the PCE. This measure, run by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, updates how items are weighted in its formula to better reflect consumer behavior, said Menzie Chinn, professor of public affairs and economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Because of this, the PCE is in some sense more representative of the costs consumers face, Chinn said.”

Shift the goalposts. The above is on inflation, but it applies to GDP, too.

Adrenaline
Reply to  Adrenaline
27 October 2022 12:01 pm

Another way the numbers are not real is through sampling. They’ll use sample statistics, instead of raw data, since it simple is not available because many corporate and business reports come in significantly after each quarter, so they’ll sample.

This allows them to undercount certain geographic locations or other measures and overcount others. Very similar to political polls.

I see it is now an every day occurrence in the mecca of universal health care that ERs close for extended periods of time because they have inadequate staffing, with a sign on the door pointing them to the next ER down the line, often sixty or more kilometers away.

Average wait time to be seen at the University Hospital in Edmonton is 10 hours.

Not all antibiotics are created equal. Some are cheap to manufacture, some are not. Drug of choice for Pasteurella is typically a penicillin derivative so should be cheap but regardless I can’t make it in my shouse.

You are neglecting to factor the costs of staffing and keeping the ER open. Your massage therapist (seriously?) has insurance, correct? What was her out of pocket expense for the ER visit? Surely not $22,000?

The reality is a ton of people left the field during the pandemic. The reality is that a MA can make more money at Target than they do rooming patients and running medical practices. The reality is there has been significant wage compression as a result of the necessity of attracting housekeeping, dietary, maintenance, etc personnel to hospitals where they are vital to the functions of a hospital.

I would expect wages to increase significantly in nursing which will drive an increase in health care costs.

That’s my experience as well MT regarding the shot.
We treat it like the flu vaccine, which is that we push it pretty hard, but you can get around it.
I got a few co-workers that do not get the flu or covid shots.
I think they have different rules for nurses and the MDs though.

i know at least 3 nurses who quit vs waited to get fired when they wouldn’t accept their religious exemptions

I agree with your take. Healthcare had a shortage even before the pandemic. My point was that some of it was self inflicted, making the situation worse.

Your ER number wait time is concerning. We are currently going through a health issue for my daughter. Autoimmune issue. No specialist would see her until January. We can’t wait that long. Enzyme production threatening her kidneys. So we go to the ER. Waited for hours.

This is a huge problem. What created this problem? My guess is Government rules and regs.

Plus, the fact that few medical/nursing schools desire to expand. They set the number of slots and don’t seem will to expand to fulfill market conditions.

That’s a factor. Universities and hospitals get big money from the government. They make decisions based on what government funds are given to them.

unhinged anger comes from cognitive dissonance.

They knows these are facts, but it bumps against core beliefs.

So they lash out in anger.
Funny, I always thought the republicans were the rational adults in the room, and dems were the whiny, angry child that the adults had to deal with.

At some point it all went to shit.

I mean, I have my same salary coming form the taxpayer while I produce not a GD thing and can’t survive in the real world. ALL THE MONEY COMES FROM THE PRIVATE SERCTOR and is grifted to commies hiding in academia, etc.

Still working on re-hiring the people who lost their jobs when the economy was shut down. I still see restaurants closing daily because of staff shortages. We can’t even get a half way qualified person to apply because nobody wants to work. Something changed in the psyche of the average American during the Covid shutdown. Everybody thinks they deserve a work from home job and people don’t realize some people aren’t worth more than minimum wage. The world needs ditch diggers too and the country needs to value an honest days work again and accept that there will always be disparity in outcome because some people are just better at certain things than others.

There are all kinds of factors, including seasonal adjustments, construction booms that affect administrative-types and retailers, etc.

Construction is slowing dramatically so it will affect retail and other sectors.
