Da Bears Game
Another day removed from that s*** show on Sunday, we now look ahead to Chicago. The Vikings play a fairly meaningless game on Sunday, as the Bears are obviously long out of it, and the Vikings are all but guaranteed the #3 seed. There is a very remote chance that they sneak into the #2 spot, but that would require the 49ers to lose to the Cardinals at home. Yeah, not happening. Because of this, I expect that we won’t see the Vikings starters on the field for very long on Sunday.
Being in this position, especially now with the sudden need for replacements at O-line, is advantageous for the Vikings. They have an opportunity to either give reps to the backup or to the new guy, if they go that route to replace O’Neill or Schlottman (Bradbury). The play calling could use some improvement as well, so let’s hope they’re able to use this week to implement at least a semblance of a balanced offense.
NFL Playoffs
I’m still a bit perplexed as to what the NFL plans to do with the playoffs and the unfinished game between the Bills and Bengals. If the Bills do indeed defeat the Patriots on Sunday, then the #1 seed hinges on the result of the Bills-Bengals game, and they must play the game, in my opinion. If they were going to play the game, yestereday or today were the most logical options, but the NFL has already said that the game WILL NOT be played this week. I’m not sure what their plan is here.

From the Pioneer Press, the Vikings are seeking to build momentum on Sunday. Okay, so I agree with this. I said earlier that the Vikings had nothing to play for, but that’s not exactly right. They do need to establish some good momentum heading into the playoffs. I’d hate to see the Vikings limp into the playoffs coming off of another performance like we saw last Sunday.

Touchy subject (and tl;dr) but…
First and foremost, I hope and pray that Damar Hamlin recovers, and that his family/friends continue to find comfort and support. Tough deal and hate that it happened.
That said, as time continues to pass without clarity in terms of NFL impact/plans regarding the suspended game, it’s hard not to want to put this in perspective.
I did a a little “Google Research” and came across an article published by Industry Safety & Hygiene News that is a trade resource for many industries (e.g. construction, oil & gas, etc). They did a report entitled ‘Top Most Dangerous Jobs in the US’ that relied on 2018 data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to determine which “top 25” careers had the highest on-the-job fatality rate based on deaths per 100,000 workers annually.
Obviously, everyone hopes Hamlin doesn’t die. But, his situation and the NFL’s response got me curious about how the NFL might compare to other types of jobs in terms of on-the-job fatality rates. It’s hard to do an “apples-to-apples” comparison because roster size in the NFL varies based on off-season/in-season and, over time, the number of teams in the league has changed. So, to keep things simple, I decided to just look at the in-season stats (i.e. 53-man roster) since 2002, which is when the NFL expanded to 32 teams.
In that 21-year period, there have been 35,616 “rostered players” in regular season games (32 teams x 53 players x 21 years). If you do the math, if a player were to die during that period, that would equate to a NFL average annual fatality rate of 2.81 deaths per 100,000 “workers”. This would put the NFL well below other occupations such as logging workers (#1 on the list with 111 deaths per 100,000 workers), fire fighters, crossing guards, police officers and mining machine operators (#25 on the list with 11 deaths per 100,000).
I’m not trying to diminish the significance of Hamlin’s situation. I’m also not trying to marginalize the inherent dangers of playing in the NFL (as they say, there’s a 100% injury rate over the course of an NFL career). But, at some point, it seems that some perspective is needed.
There’s been one “on-field death” in NFL history, which was in 1971 and there was likely an extenuating medical condition, based on autopsy, that contributed (BTW…for those that may be wondering…they finished the game after he was carted off the field). So, if you were to do this same analysis going back over the years, the risk of “on-the-job” fatality would be even lower. That said, my “analysis” doesn’t consider tragedies like Corey Springer, who died in the preseason due to heat stroke caused during practice (although roster size is also bigger that time of year, which would increase the ‘denominator’ in this math exercise if this was included). It also doesn’t consider the impact of lingering “injuries” such as CTE that may have contributed to problems later in life, like Junior Seau who took his own life.
Overall, the statistics would seem to suggest it’s time to get back to work.

You could extrapolate from what little data OSHA has, but that would include all employees, not just players. The Saints actually reported to OSHA in 2020 at least (I’m not looking up all of them). They reported an annual average number of employees of 391, total recordable injuries of 231, and total hours worked of 296800. That works out to a DART/TRI number of 155.7 ( a number that OSHA uses to compare businesses to others in similar industries). For comparison here are some other DART rates (higher=worser):

I would argue that there are actually significantly fewer than 35,616 players over that 21 year period, as the average career of an NFL player is 3.3 years. You don’t have a new 53 players every year.
Armed with that insight and a flair for inventing new math, I would argue that you only have a new 53 players every 3.3 years, which would compute to 10,854 players over that 21 year span. (21 years / 3.3 = 6.4 years –> 53 players x 32 teams x 6.4 years = 10,854 players)
So the actual number of NFL deaths per 100,000 workers would be higher, at 9.21 deaths.
My numbers also do not take into consideration the 90-man roster or PS players.
The numbers are based on “workers” per year. My analysis is correct. Doesn’t matter if it’s the same workers or different workers. A worker is a worker.
And BTW…if you expand the definition to included practice squad or off-season rosters, it further supports my point. Not to mention, I only used 21 years for my analysis when in the entirety of its history, only one player has died on the field in an NFL game.

With our daughter, we had to do 3D ultrasounds every few weeks after they found the heart defect when my wife was 20 weeks pregnant. Had to drive out to Minneapolis to do it,, they were really neat to look at. After she was born, I was blown away. The ultrasound was a perfect picture of how she looked, but also her mannerisms. It is honestly what solidified my pro-life stance.

My son came a bit early, I was at a bar with friends till 12:30 am, came home pretty liquored up. Wife went into labor when I got home, longest night of my life, all I wanted to do was go to sleep and had to stay up walking the halls with her all night. She delivered late the next afternoon.
Morale of the story…during this time stay out of the bars till after kiddo arrives.

I was just trying to give young Skoldiers some good advice learned through experience.
How awesome, a baby changes everything. First borns run a week to ten days late in my family. Just a heads up, skip the “newborn” size or at most a couple. Some babies never fit into that and if they do they outgrow it before a month. It’s OK if outfit is slightly big, won’t be for long.

My first was 9 lbs but over 23″ so most of her newborn stuff she wore for a very short time if at all. My second one was small, 8lbs and 22″ so most fit for at least a couple months.
My firstborn was on time to the day. 105 percentile on the size of the head. Say goodbye skolly, it will never be the same.

How is the actual tie breaker rule written? Is it total wins or win percentage? If it’s win percentage, then just cancel the game, it doesn’t count and the Bills/Bengals end up only playing 16 games this year. It was a conference game but at least not a divisional game.
