Sorry, this will be brief as I just got done driving back to Bismarck on crappy roads. We had a blast in Minneapolis, other than the result of the game. Ugh, that damn game. I’m not going to go in depth right now, as I’m sure I’ll have several posts in the coming days, and many more in the coming months, about the direction the Vikings should take for the future. As for how the season ended, it sucked, but at least they went down in the playoffs. The belief that playing poorly one year equates to success in a future year is stupid. Win games, make the playoffs, try to win. That’s the strategy every year. This year, they fell short, but it was a far more fun season than last year when we finished 8-9 and out of the playoffs.
We’ll have plenty of time to disucss the future. Thank God for ice fishing to make the remainder of this winter somewhat bearable. I’m also thankful that I no longer drink, otherwise I’d be a hurting unit today. I’ll always love this team, and one loss sure as hell isn’t changing that. I’ve been through FAR worse than this. SKOL!!!!!!

Kathy, deployments are usually not set up for families to have some sort of visit. Usually they are to hostile areas around the globe.
Always appreciate the sacrifice the military member and their families make. My wife was so lonely and so scared whenever I deployed. I was a special operator and the places I went weren’t what one would refer to as “vacation hotspots”. Also the missions were not publicized so she had no idea where I was, when I was coming back, or IF I was coming back. I honor her with all my heart for waiting for me. They too serve, who only stand and wait.

Thank you Kathy. I was badly injured in a helicopter crash on a mission and flown to a field hospital for surgeries. They contacted my wife and advised her I was in surgery but OK. She asked them “where is he?” they said “we cannot divulge that ma’am.

Thanks for sharing. Appreciate the sacrifices you and your wife have made. I was on submarines, so not as dangerous as a lot of military assignments. But months with no communication with family or friends wasn’t fun.
Yeah it’s not the military’s concern about visits nor should it be. Being in the reserves though it might be possible her unit backfills for a stateside unit going overseas, though it looks most likely she’ll be going to Middle East again.
Wow. Respect to you and your wife. I was military but my wife and I never had to deal with deployments once we had kids (I was out of the Navy by that time). I don’t know how I would have balanced my career and home life if my wife were deployed for +/- a year. Appreciate her (and your) service.

Here’s a thought – Donuthole switched us to a 3-4, which failed badly because the players were not accustomed to it and did it wrong.
Supposing we get players who ARE accustomed to a 3-4, are we really going to see that much improvement? Allowing WRs a 10-yard cushion is not a good plan whether you do it right or wrong.
Yeah, we minimized deep throws, but it doesn’t matter when opponents can run a series of 15-yard plays, chew up the clock, then easily score while our DBs are gassed.
I thought we determined the defense sucked in a 3-4 and a 4-3. They just suck. Same players two different coaches and schemes.

OMG yes and it wasn’t even close. The Giants dline was continually engaging and tossing them to the side like rag dolls. Just an awful performance and I think it speaks to their overall talent not being up to starter level because after the Giants Dline had a game to reflect on and a quick turnaround to play them again where they completely exposed them.

2020 and 2021 were heavily affected by injuries, I believe. I know 2020 had significant injury problems, 2021 wasn’t a ton better. Really steep drop off from 2019, when they were top 10. Best in the NFL in 2017. Sad.

The last QB to be drafted #1 overall and eventually win a SB was Matthew Stafford, drafted in 2009. While some have had some success as Five has made clear, all that matters is rings. So Since 2000, there have been 15 QBs drafted #1. They have combined for a total of 3 rings (Eli – 2, Stafford – 1). There have also been the big winners like Baker, Kyler, Goff, Crab Legs, and JaMarcus Russell.

Any favorites of yours who can be first-year starters? That’s what we’ll need, because I don’t see Cousins going anywhere. Not sure if you read the story up there, but once you see the contract, you can see that an extension gets us very little, if any, cap room.
You don’t want to enter next year’s draft having an obvious need at QB. Not sure what the best option is.
2024 best QB will be Sam Hartman. Now to land him going to have to either really suck in 2023 and have a high top ten pick or trade a bevy of picks and move up but he will be the best. He’s in the portal right now likely going to an SEC team to compete for a title this year. He’d be the perfect understudy for Kirk as he plays out his last extension. That is the best plan at QB.

I don’t see it as a bad angle. I see it as Hunter widened out and had the edge set, in that case it is Kendricks main job not to stay on the back hip and allow a cut back escape route and Hunter’s job to make the play. Runner did the right thing making space between him and Kendricks forcing Hunter to be the man to make the play and he didn’t. That play is on Hunter, not Kendricks.
So maybe I got it wrong here, but here’s what I see.
Hunter should have set the edge, and forced the run back inside towards Kendricks. Usually the edge’s job is to make sure no one gets outside of him, and force everything back into play….or what I usually think it should be.
Kendricks dives right before the guy cuts up field, and misses. If Kendricks waited until after Hunter sets his feet, and stayed a little farther up field, he would have made the play.
Either way, one of them has got to get that stop.
I agree on the idea of setting the edge to get the runner to cut back to where your teammates are in the inside but the runner decided to not go back inside, instead he pressed the edge. That’s Hunter’s tackle to make imo. At the end of the day good players take advantage of the opportunities given which neither Kendricks or Hunter did. Great players make their own opportunities. Hell of a run too.

It´s hard to tell. We have our aging and declining roster on one hand, on the other hand the defense got WORSE as the season went on, and that might point at coaching being the main culprit.
Just watched that video skolifer posted on part 1 of the thread, and that makes me more inclined to want Donatell´s ass fired ASAP, but I´d also like the team to assess every aspect of this failure as thoroughly as possible.
Leaning towards firing, just not 100% convinced… would kinda feel like Donatell is used as a scapegoat if they fire him quickly to appease the masses, doesn´t leave time to really examine what happened. So I voted maybe.
That defense was soooo bad, it really does need a deep dive assessment. However, if the Vikings wait too long they may lose out on some good candidates and Donatell’s options for a new spot decrease.

I voted to keep Donny and fix the players. Donny wasn’t the problem. It’s the players not being the right fit for 3-4 outside maybe a couple of them.
His scheme might be a problem, apparently the Fangio approach is pretty much failing across the league. Add that to a roster that’s not built to run a scheme like that, and you might end up with the clusterfuck we witnessed on Sunday.
Don’t know if Donny could do better with younger, better players that fit his type of defense, but he never had a defense as bad as this one so far.

We are in that situation, kinda. I think the front office will try to continue their “competitive rebuild”, but things won´t go smoothly next season, what with having to play a 1st place schedule among other things.
Vikes should have done that regularly for many seasons until they hit on one QB pick, Mond was too little, too late, and sucked anyway.
We’ve already seen what a competitive rebuild looks like. I’m expecting they announce a Super Duper Competitive Rebuild this year, to ensure we win at least 14 games and secure the 1st or 2nd seed.

I’m not really excited about the 2023 projected high-round QB market but I’d be all for taking a flyer on a late-round guy (ala what SF did with Purdy). Stetson Bennett would be someone I’d take a close look at. He’s not a prototypical NFL QB but he’s a proven winner who got better every year. He comes with a lot of big game experience and he’s got the “it” factor.

Baker Mayfield is a slightly more talented version of Case Keenum. You draft well in 2023 and 2024 to get an average defense. The Vikings will have a huge amount of cap to grab a WR2 and another elite player.

I can’t fight the feeling that Cousins is due for an injury. He’s been exceptionally durable, but almost everybody has a major injury at some point. Other than Eli and Favre I can’t think of many others who haven’t. Obviously no reasoning to it other than gut feel but I don’t see how he can keep taking the hits he does and not have one catch him wrong.
Yeah he’s been super durable. Eli and Brett played through a lot of injuries, which Kirk has not ever really had anything major. Guys seem to fall off a cliff around 36-39 unless you’re Brady. The Vikings need to start succession planning.
