The Super Bowl teams are set!

Eagles-49ers

The Eagles, bad injury luck, and the refs beat the 49ers 31-7 yesterday in the crappy afternoon game, wrap-up courtesy of Sporting News. The 49ers were down to using a partially operational quarterback who couldn’t throw. It’s hard to come back from 21 points down when you can’t throw the ball. It’s too bad, I thought the 49ers had a shot in this one. The officiating was laughable, Hussey and his crew sucked, as they normally do. It seems oddly coincidental that every time Goodell is in attendance, the officiating seems to be extra poor and lopsided.

Chiefs-Bengals

In the evening game, the Chiefs and Bengals battled hard. The Chiefs seemed to have control of things, but the Bengals kept it close. The Bengals defense FINALLY figured out how to shut Kelce down, and gave the Bengals offense a chance to get some points. The Bengals eventually tied it up at 20 early in the fourth quarter, and it stayed that way with both offenses struggling to sustain a drive.

The officiating AGAIN came into play late in the game. The Bengals made a stop on 3rd down, which didn’t count because the dumbasses didn’t start the clock or something. On the next play, the Benglals shut them down again but get flagged for holding and the Chiefs march on. The drive eventually ended in a punt, but not after some extra yards and time. Nothing compared to what we saw in the first game, of course. Ossai pushed Mahomes at the end of the game on a questionable play, and the refs threw the flag to put the Chiefs into field goal range. I feel shitty for Ossai.

In the end, four quarters were barely enough to settle this one. The Bengals had to punt, Moore busted a big return, and it gave Mahomes the ball WAY too close to field goal range. With a little help from the refs, the Chiefs came out on top with a 45 yard field goal.

The NFL made damn sure that Mahomes will face Hurts in the Super Bowl this year. I get more cynical every year when it comes to the NFL. I’m seriously convinced that the game is rigged. I think it’s obvious now.

Minnesota Vikings News:

Scores and highlights from yesterday’s games, courtesy of ESPN.

Wow, talking about waitiong a year too long to act. Kellen Moore is out as Cowboys offensive coordinator, per ESPN. Moore was a media darling last off-season, with many in the media pointing to Moore as the next great head coach. I believe the Vikings even interviewed him for their head coaching position. Well, he should’ve struck while the iron was hot, as he won’t be getting any head coaching interveiws any time soon.

Video of the Day:

Bill Burr sums up my thoughts about Philadelphia. This is Bill Burr, so NSFW LANGUAGE!! Enjoy!

Twitter has been lit about the horrible officiating yesterday, including from people who don’t usually talk about sports. I guess more people watch the playoffs than regular season, but more folks than usual are saying the whole thing seems fishy, with some folks saying they give up on sports.

It is the same in the NBA, LeBron (not a fan) got hacked on a last second shot Sat and the officials simply said that they ‘missed it’.
Home team won, team mate got a tech for trying to show the official a picture of the foul, other teammates were fined for talking about the errors after the game.
Sports = Entertainment now-a-days so expecting fair and balanced is just looking to be disappointed.

Hated watching Hardins Bully Ball, run into someone/throw up a shot/scream for a foul/get it/repeat. every. single. time.

Yes, lots of folks mentioned the NBA, and a few other sports. I only followed the NBA for a couple years (when one of my favorite college players got drafted), but stopped watching before everything got so political. I didn’t like that there were too many games, too many back to backs, players sitting out, etc. It’s just a terrible product other than possibly tournament time.

The Vikings ranked 28th in rush attempts (404), 27th in rush yards (1,661) and 26th in average (4.1) this year.

Run plays that gained less than or equal to 0 yards: 103 (fifth most in NFL)
Net yardage on such plays: -112 (tied for ninth worst in NFL)

Yet the Vikings offense was 7th in the league in yards per game, and 8th in the league in points per game. Hmmmm…

I said that half way through we would be better off forgetting about trying to run the football…We probably should have been ranked 32nd in rush attempts and I bet our offense would have ranked even higher.

Notable Number: 47
Sacks against the Vikings
That number ranked 25th in the NFL in 2022 and was the most allowed by Minnesota since 51 in 2014, and it tied for eighth most in franchise history (since the 1970 merger).

People said we had an improved line for Cousins. I don’t think so. The new scheme that was supposed to help Bradbury actually did so somewhat, but that didn’t help the QB much.

Hope for much improved line play next year as Ingram gets another year under his belt and maybe a new center.

Let’s see… need a linebacker who can stuff the run, cover receivers, and blitz effectively. Folks seem to think the Titans David Long (who is a free agent at age 26) fits the bill. He’s 5’11” and 227 lb’s. This about exactly the same size as Asamoah. To me, that’s undersized, but who knows?

Speed is huge. Micah Parsons is the freak with size and speed. 4.39 forty.

Asamoah barely played this year and suffered a knee injury and a concussion. I fear he’s too small for the NFL. Just my opinion though.

Drew Sanders

these two guys could flip the defense in those ways.

Sanders more of your typical LB while overshown plays the hybrid LB/S they need to spy these QBs and cover receivers.

Combine will decide a lot more for these two as far as draft positions… but KAM would have to do some work to make it happen.

With both Bengals starting safeties in Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell  pending free agents, a big extension for wide receiver Tee Higgins,  likely in play and fellow off-ball linebacker Logan Wilson also eligible for an extension after the season, it’s possible Pratt hits the market even after a career year.

I was just thinking about being a curmudgeon and things from my past. Anyone on here remember when alpine skis had a strap that attached to your ankle, instead of the binding brake? You’d wipe out and the ski would attempt to decapitate you? The strap would freeze up and then it would be almost impossible to get the ski back on as the ski would move every time you tried to step into the binding?

We were on a school ski trip and a classmate of mine (this must have been 4th grade) untied the strap so he could step into the binding, the ski took off at speed down the hill, broke when it hit somebody’s VW bug.

Since there’s not a plethora of conversations today, another funny ski story I have is my first time downhill skiing in college, had been a decade since I had previously skied. Guy at the ski rental shop in Edmonton went on and on about how I should buy the ski insurance, “I’ve seen it all and for just a few more dollars you are completely covered”. I read the fine print and finally relented, purchased the insurance with my beer money.

Next weekend we travel to Panorama, outside Inverness, BC. The mountains seem WAY steeper and higher than the ones I remembered in Europe. Not only that I’m taller and the skis are way longer than I remember. So I’m struggling, I’m no downhill racer, I’m just doing big slalom stem turns and some crappy parallel turns, sticking to the blue and green runs. Run into some of my friends at the top, they say come down this way it is great powder. Of course they eventually go zipping down a double black and I am going down as slowly as I can, wipe out about half way down. Decide I should get back up and go back around to try it again. This time I try to correct the error of my way but end up off balance off a mogul, overcorrect and I’m no Erik Guay but I am going far far faster than I want to. I should have just taken the fall but thought I could save it where the slope leveled off at the bottom.

So there was a snow fence installed at the outer radius of the curve, the groomers had piled big mounds of snow on the other side of the snow fence. Couple of ladies (it turns out) were on the inside of the curve, I yelled look out as best I could and am working on the outside, doing my best not to look at the fence cuz I know I’ll hit it if I look at it.

WHAP. I’m down.

As I’m picking up the pieces, one of the ladies that stopped to help comes climbing over the fence, one of my skis had gone tip first into one of the big snow banks. Big tear in the metal lamination on the side of the ski, but I could still ski on it.

When I returned the ski to the shop in Edmonton, the same guy checks it in and has a fit, only exacerbated when I reminded him he sold me the “completely covered” insurance. Turns out they didn’t have a lot of spares in skis that long.

I almost bought the insurance on the parachute, too.

That was another time a guy flipped out on me. My first time skydiving the jumpmaster misjudged the wind, and my parachute strings were twisted out, such that by the time I kicked out of the twist I couldn’t reach the area of the airfield. I landed in a farmer’s field across the highway so gathered up my parachute in a tight little bundle so I could get across the highway, barbed wire fence, etc. When I dropped the bundle the “guy that packs the parachutes” whatever his title was gave me a similar rant to the ski guy, would have clearly been better if my parachute just never opened as he wouldn’t have to untangle the lines.

No matter how pissed I was at the outcome, they had an even more dismal take and I could say jeez that’s just too far. Now the balance has been upset I have moved to the lower level of the spectrum. Part of the evolution of a sports blog.

I’m still trying to figure out what is happening in the microcosm of my little world. By my count, Glendive used to have eight restaurants that you could choose from any day of the week. Never did they seem to struggle with staffing (circa 1995). Now they struggle to staff four restaurants, perennially short of help and they are closed on Sundays and often Mondays, late openings, early closings, etc…I don’t understand what all the people are doing that used to work these hospitality/service jobs.

I was just at a meeting about something similar to this regarding offering training programs to get more workers to do the more mundane tasks around here.
Here’s what I know:
There are 2.9 million less workers now than there were in Feb. 2020.
Its a combo of things that affects this. Many older, part-time “boomers” just got out of the job market, and child care costs have sky rocketed to the point that many people find they save money staying home instead of sending kids to daycare and working. This is a big issue in MN with formerly duel income households. Households where one parent with a better job would have dental and health care benefits, and the other would just work for spending money, have dropped out of the workforce. Daycare costs too much. This might just be a local issue. MN has some of the highest daycare costs in the US.
I’ve lost 2 workers in the last year to this that were part time. The second they had kids they left the work force.
Finally, the boosted unemployment benefits and stimulus had many people quit the food/hospitality industry, and when those benefits ran out they found jobs in higher paying industries. If you google “great reshuffle” , you’ll see what is going on.

My Cribbage Tournament Experience:

My wife did better than me, even though she only plays once a year. Of course.

I did get revenge on the 12-year-old kid who skunked me first game last year. Played him first game this year. Total coincidence. Didn’t even recognize him until we started playing. Then beat him. Take that, kid!

I almost got in a fight with an old man. He was a grumpy ass. Never had that experience there before. Everyone is nice and low key and helps out if their opponent misses points, rather than stealing them. He took the game super seriously. It was the last game, and I wasn’t paying attention as much because the top players were already decided for the playoffs, and we were just finishing the last game to go eat. I made a mistake counting, and the old guy came at me hard. Basically, asked me if I was stupid, and if I could count. Since it took me by surprise, I went back at him equally hard, sarcastically thanking him for his incredible Cribbage mentorship. Next, he started implying I was cheating. Game got ugly then. He was ranting and raving about how *he* would never cheat at the greatest game ever invented: Cribbage. Yep, I am cheating when I am already out of the running for the playoffs and just want to go eat. Plus, my counting mistake was in HIS favor!

My wife said he must have had a hard life or something.

I ended up beating him, and he got further ticked off.

When I was an adolescent/teenager, cribbage was the staple of holiday get togethers. That’s when you would pack in the car and head to the grandparent’s for the long weekend (incredibly the onus of holiday visits did not depend on the grandparents travelling to us as that would never happen – they had hand). Two dozen people all shoehorned in a home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, I got to sleep on one of many air mattresses scattered on the floor in the basement. Six am to midnight there were cribbage games going non stop. Go out and help feed cattle, back in and it’s your turn to deal in, etc…that’s why I’m amazed DE has had two 29 hands as I have never seen one in person.

The first time I went to this tournament, there were three 29 hands. The last five times I’ve been there, zero 29 hands.

There were probably 80 people playing that first time. This one guy had a super deep voice that carried over the whole room even though everyone is jabbering.

About halfway through that day, all of a sudden you hear his voice boom out, “I can’t believe I lost by 40 @&$%ing points!”

So, historically, I don’t do a lot of hawt taeks because they’re inevitably heavy on the hawt and light on the taek. That said, if the Vikings are ever going to trade Kirk Cousins, this would be the offseason to do it and the team that could potentially make it (and want it to) work is the 49ers.

We’re all familiar with the past takes regarding Shanahan’s potential interest in Kirk. But I would imagine at this point, if there’s any truth to those rumors, that interest could be at an all time high. The one thing SF has missed most over the past few seasons is a serviceable QB that can stay healthy. And given Shanahan’s track record developing QBs, I’m sure he believes he could take Kirk to another level.

They have an open window right now given their offensive skill group and dominant defense. They also have enough cap space to work with and they could be one of a very few teams Kirk might consider waiving his no trade clause for. They’re built to win and he has a history with their head coach, who is reportedly “Kirk friendly’. Kirk has also proven to be one of the most durable starting QBs in the league.

Minnesota desperately needs a reset at the QB position, IMO. But barring a “team friendly” (which Kirk isn’t known for) extension, they can’t build a supporting cast to surround Kirk with talent like the 49ers already have. And the Vikings’ odds/options to find and sign a good, young QB to develop behind Kirk in the next few seasons are very low.

That said, I think there could be a win-win in a trade that sends Kirk to SF and Trey Lance to the Vikings. Frankly, with Purdy on their roster and with the way he played, it wouldn’t surprise me if he has the lead in an impending QB competition between him and Lance. And a trade like this would probably give SF more immediate value than a potential trade for picks that involve Lance, which has been speculated. In fact, I think SF might even consider giving up some picks to secure this trade.

SF gets a durable, “proven” (not sure what that means when it comes to Kirk, but I’m guessing Shanahan thinks he can “fix” any issues), veteran QB and they can allow Purdy to continue to develop behind him for 2- 3 seasons. The Vikings get their young, “high ceiling” QB and free up some cap room to help solidify their defense and O-line. The challenge for the Vikings would be they only have one season to figure out if Lance is “the guy” before they’ll have to make a decision on his 5th year option (for 2021 1st rounders, the deadline will most likely be in May 2024).

I’d try to get a couple mid/late-round picks thrown in. I think SF is under more pressure to “win now” than the Vikings are and they haven’t had a single season, IIRC, under Shanahan where their starting QB hasn’t missed significant time, or a significant game(s), due to injury. Say what you will about Kirk, but the guy is durable.

And if rumors are true SF is open to shopping Lance, getting a guy like Kirk brings them more immediate value than other teams are likely to offer up in terms of draft picks.

I think getting rid of the best QB the Vikings have ever had is pretty foolish. They can extend Cousins this year (they will) and his cap hit will go way down. In fact there are number of moves that will give the Vikings all the cap room they need to do whatever they want.

Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen walked away from Cousins because he put so much egg on their face regarding the RGIII trade they couldn’t stand it. Since Cousins left, you may want to review how bad the QB situation in Washington has been and how few passing TD’s they have. It may open your eyes.

The Vikings will retain Cousins for at least the next three years because he showed KOC just how great he is behind a porous line and in a new system that the receivers weren’t very good at executing. KOC now knows what he has, and he knows replacing Cousins in a draft or trade isn’t going to make the team better. It will make the team worse.

Why do you want the Vikings to be worse?

Montreal Canadiens in 1993.

Oilers had a lot of superstars on relatively low salary deals. No salary cap and Edmonton struggled with the declining $CAN relative to USD. Peter Pocklington (owner) was in debt. Wayne had just married a Hollywood actress. Writing was on the wall and they made a play to try and stay competitive, but bottom line Edmonton gained no meaningful players and Pocklington got a bunch of money to pay off debts. Will always be the darkest day in professional sports in my universe.

It may seem like hyperbole but it was truly surreal for Edmontonians. It is no exaggeration to say it was still the only topic of conversation a week later. The utter silence of the room at Molson house, the clicks of the camera shutters, Wayne crying. For me, just like the article says it will be…if Wayne can be traded anyone can be traded.

Most teams don’t go through 2 QBs in the regular season and make it to NFCCG, most teams who do and lose both QBs during the game to injury do not win. Its kind of asking a lot to have 5 functional QBs on your roster.

skolifer
skolifer
Reply to  Gone fishin'

McCaffery was their emergency QB but against a front 7 like Philly, there was no good option. If they go Wildcat, Philly just loads up the box daring them to throw. At least with Purdy, SF still presented the possibility of a pass given Philly didn’t necessarily know the extent of his injury and how it might limit him.

Also, because of the 45-man active limit, no team has 3 available QBs in a given game. That’s why there’s a lot of debate about increasing this limit to 46 players, specifically to allow a team to have 3 QBs available during a game.

24. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: DT SIAKI IKA, BAYLOR

Cornerback could certainly be an option here for the Vikings, who just need to get better on defense in every facet. But with some big investments in the secondary last draft, perhaps they let those picks pan out a bit more and opt for a player like Siaki Ika, who, at 6-foot-4 and 355 pounds, boasts unique burst and pass-rush ability for a nose tackle.

I think the standard for a good not great QB was set with the Palmer and Bradford trades, which were a 1 and additional pick, however Palmer was 31 and Bradford 29 at the time. Kirk will be 35 when the season starts and as such is worthless than the other two. Probably get the equivalent of a first round pick.

Chefs probably still win, only needed a few more yards and still had time to throw over the middle one more time and spike it. It is a weak penalty though and would have been nice to see the Chefs earn the last 10 – 15 yards for the game winning kick. The biggest factor in that game was the Bengals Oline, particularly the RT, they were brutalized the entire game and the sack on the last possession gave Chefs the chance for the FG.

Overall, the refs sucked but I don’t get that take. Ossai pushed Mahomes well out of bounds with both his hand and his opposite forearm. Because of that, Mahomes has no choice to go down to avoid running full out into the bench.

It was unfortunate it happened, given the situation. But I don’t see anyway that flag isn’t thrown.

Also… that call where they “respotted” the ball on camera angles made for fans.

that was wild.

with the announcers spending the next few plays trying to justify the call.

it just felt icky

was mahomes pushed? yes
did mahomes get a call from christopher nolan after that acting job? yes

i hate when a game is decided on the refs. i could have seen zero flag thrown there as well as a flag thrown there.

Yup.

im not saying it couldn’t have been a penalty.

I am saying that a penalty like that shouldn’t be called to send someone to the Super Bowl.

I have no dog in this fight, as a football observer it’s gross.

yes i agree, no dog in that fight.
although i do think the Bengals have a better offense to go against the Eagles.
I hope mahomes can get 100% healthy and their Wr’s can as well.

The eagles can NOT win this bleeping game.

curious to see what our defense would have done if we let the big D man go after like week 7 or 8 when we could see the writing on the wall….

If the NFL wanted to fix the SB they would have put the Bills in it. The refs just suck.

Probably true. I read a comment from a Vikings fan on another blog that said, something like, “Well, the NFL got their Kelce Bowl, which is what they wanted from the beginning.”

I had to laugh. Literally, no one was talking about a Kelce Bowl until last night, so I’m not sure what “beginning” he was referring to.

Hahahahaha right?

next year… the Bills may get their shot. It’s Allen’s turn right?

As far as the NFC… who’s the young stud QB to cheer for other than hurts?

Jones? Fields? Murray? Is there one?

Yeah, pay no attention to Philly an KC being the two best teams throughout the season. But also, Colts beat KC so they are still better.

Every time I watch the eagles they give me more and more to cheer against them.

Their coach is the epitome of douchenozzle and the way he tried to get the crowd pumped up as there was literally a brawl on the field. The officials are literally using the loudspeakers to call the teams to their respective sidelines ans what’s oh coach mcdocuchey do? Get all his players on their side? Nope he turns to the crowd and raises his hands to get the crowd pumped.

He literally is the worst

I’ve been saying it for weeks…I fucking hate that guy and want to punch him in the face.

They even ran a story on GMFB last week about how all the people from his home town area still hate him because in sports he played he was such a douche. They literally hired the guy who personifies the fanbase of horseshit eating douchebags.

My takeaway, other than the obvious terrible officiating and the fact that the outcome is predetermined was this.

on 4th and 6, needing a fist down and a score, Joe Burrow was about to get crushed, and tossed a ball up to a double covered Jamar Chase, who made the play and they got a first and goal.

Kirk, 4th and 8, well.. we know he said he wanted to get the ball to JJ but did not like the look.
There is the difference.

Bangles still lost thanks to some stupidity, but with the game on the line, I want Joe or someone like him, or someone with an upside, playing QB vs Kirk.

Pretty much sums it up, Burrow just chucks it up to his best receiver to go for the win, Kirk checks it down to the TE because he doesn’t want to risk it despite the game being determined by the throw. But hey, Kirk had a great stat line and that’s all that matters.

didn’t kirk do this on 4th and 17 to JJ for a first down against the bills?

but yes, i would obviously much rather have burrow than kirk. i don’t think anyone is arguing that or saying that at all.
