Merry May Day, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us for Minnesota Vikings talk, Vikings news, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing draft weekend. There was a lot of uncertainty heading into the draft, and in the end, it turned out unlike most people expected. Most fans expected the Vikings to trade back, but they did not. They stood pat in the first round. The remainder of the draft went mostly as expected. The Vikings front office had limited draft capital heading in, and they made due with what they had.

I’ve seen reactions fom one end of the spectrum to the other regarding the Vikings draft. I thought that KAM was better at navigaiting trades in his sophomore draft. Overall, I feel that he did a good job of using the limited resources he had, and using them to produce a draft that has potential to be a good one.

I would have liked to see us find a long-term solution to our QB position in the draft, but that expectation is unrealistic considering the limited draft capital combined with being in the 23 spot, which makes it nearly impossible to move to the top few spots.

Minnesota Vikings News:

At MSN, they wonder whether DeWayne McBride being drafted spells the end of Dalvin Cook in Minnesota. LOL, Dalvin may be leaving, but I think other factors played more of a role in that decision than our seventh-round draft pick.

KAM stated that he’s excited for Kirk Cousins, but every option is open going forward, per NFL.com. I like it.

Lots of steam that Cook is going to the fins for a 5th.

I don’t care if it’s for a 7th round pick… if we don’t have to pay for any of his salary.

Well I’m not going to make this a salary issue only. Cook is a great player but $14 mill is to steep I agree. I’d like to see a 4th rd pick honestly but if it’s a 5th then so be it.

Spent the day with USSOCOM at MacDill in a conference. Gonna be in discussions with them through Thursday. Met a guy who was born in Green Bay and over lunch struck up a conversation with him. He says the Packers are going to suck now that Rodgers is gone.

And more truth, from the sermon on the mount

“My issue with him isn’t his money. It is his mindset. His mindset has been an issue his entire career. Jay Gruden tried to convince him he needed to take more chances. Mike Zimmer tried to convince him he needed to take more chances down the field. KOC won’t call him out publicly. When he talked repeatedly about the offense needing to be more consistent, he was talking about Cousins.
There is a reason Kirk is always in one score games. He will not play aggressively unless it is absolutely necessary. It is why he is basically a .500 quarterback despite having as much arm talent as any of the other top QBs outside of Mahomes and Herbert.
He also might be the most immobile starting QB in NFL history. He isn’t the least athletic. He is the most immobile. He makes playing Oline much harder than other QBs. He makes decent lines look average, and he makes average lines look awful.
The only way you are winning with Kirk is with an all-time great defense and a top 3 offensive line. Good luck with that.”

Perhaps you’d like a little context from someone who lived in DC at the time.
First a strange fact about the Gruden quote and Jay certainly said that. But at the same time he sent Cousins to his brother Jon’s camp – Jon was considered the big QB guru. But here’s the part that doesn’t get written. Jon told Kirk HE TAKES TOO MANY RISKS. Yes, you read that correctly. Remember this is the Redskins!
Now, any of you ever play QB? Any of you ever played QB for a defensive minded coach? Chapter 1, Verse 1 – he who wins the turnover battle, wins the game. Verse 2 – QB’s shall not force the ball and throw interceptions. Zimmer may say that publicly – but behind closed doors?
Stafford throws an interception, Mcvay comes over and gives him a hug. Cousins throws an interception and Zimmer smears and walks to other end of bench. This is pure bullshit!
And the line stuff – ever wonder why his offensive lineman speak so highly of him? Believe just the center last week.
What garbage!

Eh. I don’t know about that.
At what salary?
There hasn’t been one credible report of the 49ers ever being interested in Kirk, other than , “Shanny loves Kirk”

Kirk is good.
Just don’t think he will win a bowl, even if everything else is perfect. Would love for him to prove the “Kirk Haters” wrong.

LOL…It’s Kirk’s fault he’s always in one score games…bawahahahahaha…how fucking stupid are you?? We had historically one of the worst defenses in franchise history that were easier to go through than a wet brown paper bag and you have the NERVE to blame Kirk for the team being in one score games??? REALLY??? Maybe expand your mind just a little and look past your skewed hatred for Kirk and realize if we had even an average defense most of those games we would have won by multiple scores.

Dude you have no idea what the hell you’re talking about.

Straight facts being posted on Reddit surprisingly
In regards to Kirk and his “stats”

“Because he was 12th in CPOE, 17th in EPA.
The comebacks weren’t an accident. Dude disappeared for roughly half of each game.
“Comebacks” isn’t a real stat. Dude disappeared for entire halves weekly and it’s reflected in the stats”

where did you get all this crap? How many TD’s has he thrown last three or four years? Do TD’s count? Comebacks don’t count! Go tell that to every football analysts, coach, or whatever. How many 40 plus yards has he completed? How many 20plus air yards has he completed? What’s his TD/int ratio over last 5 years? Does that count?
and you’re trying to tell me below you are objective. Right

KFEY93
Reply to  JRobert
1 May 2023 4:52 pm

Sure, it “counts” as far as numbers and raw stats, great. But CPOE and EPA put those raw stats into Context. And when you look at it, Cousins is not a top 10 QB but he’s being paid like one. You lose the forest through the trees. He’s not consistently good against top competition and only puts the foot on the gas when its too late. Im objective enough to know that what makes a great QB great is more than just ” OOHHH TDS OOGA BOOGA”

JRobert
JRobert
Reply to  KFEY93

Don’t believe I ever said he was a top 10 or ever said he was great. Now I did say he plays his position at a high level. And since we only have a handful of players that actually play their position at a high level, I worry far more about that issue than QB play. And you want to post old articles and stats to make Cousins look bad – good for you. But none of that does one thing to make the Vikings any better.
And if you want to impress, post an article that tells me why Hunter plays like crap half the time, or why Z doesn’t even show up. Or why H.Smith has pieces of his jock all over the field from the Giants game due to all the missed tackles. Hell, there’s lots to talk about!

LOL…this is so fraudulent it’s beyond ridiculous. He doesn’t “disappear for entire quarters” There’s a little something called game plans and strategy, featuring running the ball and ball control against certain defensive units you have to play conservative against. You fail, yet again, to understand the context of executing a game plan and not going full tilt trying to score all the time for 4 qtrs. That’s what casual dumb fans think is happening when in reality exactly what I’m taking about is exactly what they did to stay in close games, not make costly mistake, and when the time came to be aggressive they were and broke the NFL record for come backs and winning one score games in a season. That was because of KIRK COUSINS.

Also newsflash….he’s not even in the top 10 for QB compensation currently. Quit saying that it makes you sound even dumber than you are on this subject. Hater.

There’s shot guns in our school parking lots every fall for bird season, has yet to be a recorded incident. Crazy how that gun didnt spout legs and walk into the school and start blasting. That was an adventure. I missed most of the draft coverage because I was on a 27 hour road trip. My son needed to be in Seattle for his next duty station and because there is not housing available yet for his family, he was going to have to do the drive all by himself. I volunteered to help out. We left Friday morning and made it to Columbus, MT and spent the night there. The next day we made it to Seattle. It was a total guy road trip. No detours for sight seeing. No stops to “let’s just check out that store”. No stops for a family meal. Just stops for fast food to go, potty breaks and gas.

You’re not wakey – just seems to me a little biased. Maybe go back and watch the SB game between the Bucs and Chiefs – that’s the greatest QB on earth that got grounded by bad line play.
And on a person side, I get up every morning rubbing a fake knee, an arthritic shoulder, and then shake out bad trigger finger on the ring finger of my throwing hand. All because of being tossed on my ass by a large defensive lineman. So maybe I have a much better appreciation for the correlation between good OL and QB play.

Im aware having a trash line makes it impossible for QB to function. However, I am also aware that our line has basically been average outside of maybe 2018 and 2020 they were closer to below average then but still not league worse. My point is what Kirk has to work with is what maybe..80% of the rest of the QBs in the league have to work with as well..maybe 3 or 4 have ELTIE pass blocking lines. The rest are right there with Kirk. Im not biased, Im just sick of the excuses and what aboutisms of the past half decade.

Everyone here who calls me hater forgets I was HUGE advocator for Kirk from the moment he signed until the start of the 49ers game at the end of 2019. I argued against Five and Montana (users you arent aware of) that Kirk needs a chance, and some help, much like the Kirk stans here are advocating for now. Only difference is I came to reality that theres more to it than that with him at the end of 2019 and accepted that we need to move on then and there. Now 4 seasons later, we are no closer to having a better off, well rounded roster or being an actual play off competitor. I gave up on Kirk when it was time to, some others just havent.

First, I didn’t say you were a hater. I said the haters will be out after the scenario I presented. Now, we disagree on some facts (opinions).
Unlike you, I think Kirk performs at a very high level behind pretty crappy conditions. Sure all of them perform well under great conditions and Kirk is poor when the pocket is absolute crap. But unlike you, the rest of the league does not perform at a high level in “pretty crappy.” conditions and Kirk does this just about every game it seems. Hell. just go watch some tape of brady(bucs) and stafford(rams) when their lines get crappy. Balls start flying all over the place.
Funny you mention the 2019 SF game. Believe Kirk got sacked, hit, hurried more than any QB at the time. He looked poor. But, then the Packers went out there the following week and the niners did the same thing to Rogers – he looked like crap. And I’m guessing he’s a first ballot HOFer. If I had been GM. I would have gone out and gotten a couple of IOL like Andy Reid when Mahomes got tanked by the Bucs front.
You want the Vikings to win, so do I. Our methods are different. I don’t think it matters(very little) if Kirk throws 30 TD’s or 45TD and 5000 yards. WE’re not in the AFC. For us to get to the SB we need to beat teams like Dallas, SF, Eagles – last year’s playoff games were brutal. We can’t match that. We need more physicality, QB play is a side show..

I know you guys are busy gushing about the draft but that was one crazy weekend in the hockey playoffs. First and foremost the Panthers took down the Bruins in seven games, scoring the tying goal late in the third with the goalie out, then potting the winner in OT. The Bruins set the NHL record for wins and points. Second the Western Division winners the Avalanche were taken down in game 7 by the second year expansion team Kraken. Third depending on the results of the NYR-NJD tilt tonight IIRC the visiting team has won the series in all the matches with the exception of the Knights-Jets tilt. Crazy how the President’s Trophy winner curse marches on, took out the “vice-president” this time as well. They say the first series is the toughest on the road to the Cup.

Oh, and last but not least the Oilers took out the always tough Kings in game 6 on Saturday despite a broken goaltender stick allowing the Kings to tie in the third on a shortie. Will Farrell was devastated. On to the LV Golden Knights should be a great series!

Imagine Leafs-Oilers for the Cup. Bananas.

Ward is a tweener, which a few analysts said was the reason to select him while others said it was the reason not to.

He 6’2 188 and Blackmon 6’0 175 are both on the smaller side but Booth is 6’0 195 Evans is 6’2 198 While Murphy is 5’11 190

Smith, Cine, Metallus, and Bynum are all over 200lbs and Joejuan is real big at 6’3 212.

All over the place.

It isn’t hard to see Ward putting on 10-15lbs in an NFL program and fitting in with the rest of the safeties.

I found the draft fairly underwhelming. They didn’t have any horrible trades so that’s a step in the right direction I suppose. I didn’t hate the WR pick, WR wasn’t the greatest need, but it was ok and a much better alternative than reaching for an inferior player at a position of more need. Drafting Hall was stupid, especially after Kwesi stood at the podium and said they weren’t going to take a flyer on a QB. We’ll see in a couple years how these players develop but I’m not overly optimistic about them as of right now.

Not only for himself but the offense as a whole.

IF they’re clicking out the gate they’ll be fun to watch.

My big question mark is whether or not that RB can climb the depth charts and see any significant snaps.

Addison should succeed, so it’s a safe pick in my opinion (assuming his personality holds up). I think it wasn’t a need, and I would have loved Bresee there though.

I do like the DL they picked, too. It’ll be good to get some pass rushing skills there.

Well, it’s interesting because of the dynamic of the NFCN seems to be changing. No longer is there A A Ron in his prime that was going to throw a lot and Stafford as well. I feel the Pack is loading up to run first with PA off of it. Drafted two TEs (ugh!) and have a very unproven QB. So I don’t feel having to have top tier elite corners is as necessary as getting pressure on the young QBs in the division right now. Sans the Lions with Goff playing, he’s got a lot of experience.

You’ve never heard of a reverse sear? I never sear before smoking, closes pores to the smoke.

So, I’ve learned this from Alton Brown. His perfect steak is to dry brine just salt over night and leave in the fridge on a drying rack over night. This brings out globular proteins which is literally what gives you a crust. So he oven bakes until 120, then let’s rest for 10 minutes so you don’t lose juice when pulling the probe out. Gets his cast iron scorching hot sears for 45 seconds on each side. That reverse sear locks in the flavor and that overnight brine gets you an amazing crust.

I use a coarse coffee rub and adjusted that for smoking till 120. Then Searing. Absolutely rules.

Edgecrusher71
Reply to  Gone fishin'
1 May 2023 10:45 am

It does not. So, it’s funny. Alton Brown did a correction series. His first episode of Good Eats in like 1999 he said the same thing. He went back through his stuff and corrected things he has learned to be wrong that use to think was right. It does pull moisture to the surface which pulls out those globular proteins that gives the crust. But then most of that moisture grabs the salt and pulls and goes back into the meat. I love that guy. Willing to go back through and correct himself love it.

An NFL player can be tagged a maximum of 3 times in his career.

The only relevance that has is that the Vikings would have to pay him 144% of his previous years salary, which comes to 43 mil. He would not be able to tagged again after that though, that would be the 3rd time.

I keep reading, “if a player is tagged for the third straight year…”

1.) It would not be a third straight year.

2.) what if they used the non exclusive tag?

I do think a legal issue would arise.

But I don’t think he will be tagged by the Vikings.

Isn’t there disagreement as well if the Washington tags even matter? I thought the language says something about one team tagging a player multiple times so as far as the Vikings are concerned he has not been tagged. I’m sure the union would not go along with that interpretation however. Unions are stupid.

Correct.
There is the question of whether the third tag is oriented at the team or if it follows the player.

Kirk is the regular season and sub .500 winning King. He will throw for 4000+ yards, 30+ TDs, 5-10 INTs. Vikings will have a 8-10 win ish season, then the “High-powered” offense will go out on WC weekend and score 20-23 points and lose to an underdog and then excuses will abound about how the team let Kirk down. This crystal ball is surprisingly clear, I can see the future.

It;s actually worse that this. Our team is carried by our passing game. And anytime we play a team with a really physical, tough front seven – Dallas, 49ers, Eagles etc – we are screwed.
And in my world, if you score 24 against an offensively challenged team like the Giants in the playoffs and lose, you don’t deserve to be there. Just imagine what the Chiefs will do to you.

Could not agree more. And its why this ” WE WON 13 GAMES DURRR” argument is invalid to me. Any one with any critical thinking knew last season team was a sham and would get waxed the moment they encountered an actual physical, well rounded team. There’s going to be some serious ass whoopings with the schedule we have.

WE WON 13….. comment is sort of true. We will get waxed and smoked by a team like Dallas, Yet, if we play a team like the Chiefs we may lose like 45 – 30, still waxed, but in a different way. I really don’t care who our QB is, just think if we don’t fix the underlying problem we are screwed.

C,on. How about the officiating – 12 man defense, catches out of bounds. And two plays before the fumble, Dalvin dropped a wide open TD pass (a JV player could have caught) and could have crawled into the end zone.
Maybe just a little even handedness.

Every season has weird games for every team. Vikings always win a game they should lose handily, and they always lose a game they should win handily. Never fails.

Regular season is just for chuckles. The pretenders are quickly disposed of by the big boys once the playoffs start.

Vikings haven’t been a big-boy team in a long time.

Said over the weekend, but I’m extremely disappointed in the draft. Could not stand drafting WR in round 1 so that’s probably jaded the rest of the picks for me.

Just feel we didn’t need a WR, especially that early. We’ll see how it pans out but to me KAMs off to a rough start. Especially if Levis or Hooker turn out for Titans and Lions respectively.

KAM could very well be on his death spiral already then. I don’t know a lot, but I know decent drafts are somewhat important to keep your teams shelves stocked.

I wasn’t a fan of WR at that spots. It didn’t sound like the trade down options were great because they couldn’t also get Addison and trade down.

Looking at what the Jags got it may have been nice to see a trade down and pick up the 4,5,&7 that they did.

I would’ve probably done things a hair differently that KAM for the later picks.

134. Minnesota Vikings (from KC)

Jay Ward, S, LSU

I would’ve taken

139. Arizona Cardinals (from DEN)

Clayton Tune, QB, Houston

141. Minnesota Vikings (from LV via IND)

Jaquelin Roy, DT, LSU

145. Carolina Panthers

Jammie Robinson, S, Florida State

164. Minnesota Vikings (from SF)

Jaren Hall, QB, BYU

I would’ve taken Andrew Vorhees the injured IOL from USC. He went in the 7th to the Ravens and could be an absolute steal there. We’ll see.

After the first hole where I topped my two attempts at hitting the ball, I warmed up and played well(for me). Only lost 1 ball in the ice water, par on two par 4s, and overall played as well as I had been at the end of last season.

Biggest win for me was not being sore at all. I guess this exercise thing is good for me.
